  1. The verification is, pretty much always, entirely pointless. If you click 'no' on the dialog box, then 'ok' (or is it 'yes'?) on the followup, it'll let you start the game without bothering to verify.

If verifications are regularly finding corrupted files, that sounds like you have (1) bad ram, (2) a dying hard disk, or (3) a corrupted filesystem. Or maybe you regularly pass a giant magnet near your hard disks. Regardless, it shouldn't really be necessary 99.99% of the time.

Having black bars on both sides is normal if you have a non-4:3 monitor, because the background image on the login screen is 4:3 (and doesn't stretch anymore). The OP said, though "its off to the left with a huge black bar on the right hand side of the screen." so it would appear that there's not bars on both sides that are equal size. Plus, also happens in game, passed the login screen.

And pressing the back button asks about leaving the queue. It seems very likely to me that's simply artifacts of the UI design, not evidence of being in an actual queue.
  4. It sounds more like your monitor's settings for that resolution got messed up. Have you tried pressing the physical 'auto' button on your monitor (or possibly the autodetect menu option brought up by the 'menu' button)?

I don't know if the sustained Fury buff and Damage Aura of Bruting outpaces the Critical buffs and the additional powerhouse attack of Stalking?
Energy Transfer doesn't get boosted damage on a critical (it only loses the -health portion), and Total Focus only gets a partial crit.

ET also does more self-damage to a Stalker than a Brute... that's in addition to a Stalker having far less HP.

The only thing Stalkers have going for them is Assassin's Strike, which actually does very good damage mid-combat now. Before the buff, Brutes could have easily out damaged Stalkers... but now, Stalkers might have the edge.
  6. So basically a purchaseable, time-limited version of Lore pets?
  7. I've not seen an actual queue on any servers in quite a long time (unless you see numbers, I don't believe there's actually a queue)... it also never takes more than a few seconds (maybe 5 at the max), certainly never minutes! And I regularly play on Freeodm and Virtue, which are always the heaviest loaded servers.

    Account Security

I would like to see an additional account security feature for logging in as the forums use the same password as the game account.
Using something like the TOTP Algorithm would greatly enhance security, especially on master accounts. The nice benefit of this is they could just piggyback on the Google Authenticator app (which is simply an implementation) and other devices that support the same format.

It would actually defeat keyloggers. For your account to be hijacked in that case, the attacker would need a much more specific, targeted attack (such as hijacking your session in real time).

    Quote:
Another NC Soft games uses a pin with a randomly generated keypad to prevent keyloggers from capturing the pin.
This, at best, would only help with primitive keyloggers. Many keyloggers also take screenshots on mouse clicks, which would completely defeat this technique... it's not hard to do at all.
  9. Did you only play a trial before, or had you actually subscribed? If you were subscribed ever, you should already have at least one additional Paragon Rewards Token, using that account.

IvB has a few differences from SB in regards to the 'k' series. 'k' parts are 100Mhz faster than their normal counterparts (3.3 vs 3.4), with also 100Mhz higher max turbo speed (3.7 vs 3.8). 'k' parts lack some enterprise/virtualization (VT-d) related extensions, but it's unlikely the OP or anyone else in this thread would really care (well, I care about VT-d, but I'm weird ). Doesn't apply to the i5 'k' part, but the i7 'k' part (ignoring the GPU-less parts) has the same GPU as it's non-k counterpart.

If you're familiar with how things worked with the SandyBridge lineup, be careful when you're glancing over IvyBridge's lineup, because there's a few differences.
  11. IIRC, back when Castle upped "melee" attacks range from 5ft to 7ft, he also made them all ignore range modification... that, or it was when he added the -range portion to taunt.

He did this because it was actually possible to make melee powers completely broken if you slapped enough -range on a target (i.e. hurricanes). It shouldn't buff the range of any melee attacks. I'm not sure about the non-standard ranged attacks like KOBlow, or the "melee" cones like Shadow Maul &co, but I don't believe it should.
  12. I like the idea, although I think 100m might be a bit too cheap. 250m "feels" like a better number to me (which would push it from "maybe" to "mostly out of my reach" for me personally). A lot of the super pack rewards are pretty good (including the Elemental Order costume set!), so it'd probably still be worth the inf if you actually had large quantities.
  13. When recording video, the "disable2d" command is great for being able to hiding the UI. I often bind "++disable2d" to DECIMAL, so I can just hit that key and completely hide the whole UI until I hit it again... I'd highly recommend you don't just manually turn it on, otherwise you'll have to manually turn it off without being able to see the chat window! (certainly possible, but if you're not comfortable with slash commands it could get very messy)

It used to be that the North and South trams were part of different networks. It's been possible to jump between them without loading since they merged the networks.

I think they should let you... but make it completely 100% absolutely clear that you must also buy X, Y, and Z to be able to actually play it. Not a simple click-through dialog that no one will ever read.
  15. Welcome back to the city!

If you unlocked the slot the Mastermind is in, you would still need to either buy the Mastermind AT in the store, or become VIP to play it.

If you unlock then delete a character later, you'll have an empty slot you can make a new character in. You won't be able to reappropriate that 'slot' to unlock another character (becoming VIP for a month then lapsing might make you rechoose, but I've not tried to confirm that).
  16. Yeah, Premiums already get it pretty good. There's been more than a few T9s that have dropped to Premium because they already had access to everything they wanted without being VIP.

If Premium is too attractive, Paragon will start losing money... depending on how much revenue drops by, they'll either have to scale back their development, or make major changes. Either way, the loss of a healthly VIP base will be quite bad for them (since, as they've said repeatedly, even today at the Pummit, VIPs are their primary source of revenue).

If someone is playing a game, they're not going to load up a second game to play it at the same time.
    No sane person would.

I've played a high-APM RTS (the one with a similar name to that MMO everyone knows... no, not THAT one, slightly less similar!) and CoH at the same time... no one on CoH noticed, but I certainly wasn't winning any matches in the RTS...
  17. IIRC, you already get a small reward for taking out purse snatchers.
  18. Long as we don't have to see his junk...
  19. Lets put it underground, in one of those little cave doors... like how Fort Trident is just some non-descript cave entrance. Then, have Nemesis collapse the entrance, so we won't have to do any fedex missions there to stare at his crotch that's being shoved in our faces.
  20. Oh, so it's not that you turn the toggle on and you give them a minor to-hit buff, it's that when the toggle is on, you can summon them at a targeted location for a tohit penalty on them. Definitely interesting...
  21. People weren't "gathering" in WW/BM before the /ah command. At best, people merely were in the same place at the same time, not interacting in any way at all.

    It won't accomplish anything good.
  22. A minor to-hit buff doesn't seem all that useful for their effectiveness... especially having to drop a power to be able to take it (especially since /devices already has one +tohit toggle for yourself!).

Everyone seems to keep overlooking how I said that AV should be your last layer of defense My point was that people ignore every other layer, especially by far the most important and effective, which is patching the hole in the first place.

There will always be malware targeting zero-days, but they are extremely rare by comparison (they sell for a small fortune on the black market). I would much rather run the latest version of IE with no AV software, than running IE 6 from a fresh install of Windows XP with the best AV software in the world.

And, again, my point isn't to do one instead of the other, it's do both. Get good AV software (I use MSE, simply because it's the least 16-year-old-girl-always-wanting-your-attention-ish), and keep all the software on your system up to date (especially Java and Flash, because they have updaters that are total crap... and are prime targets).
  24. It's best to ignore the "Helper" and "Help Me!" titles. People only use them for the coloring, and nothing else.

Edit: Scooped by DarkGob. They really should remove the coloring, as he said.

Except it's trivially easy to change the signature of a virus. It might be slightly faster to create the signature, but nothing stops the malware author from modifying it in such a way that the current signature is useless. Many have even developed automated tools that modify it in such a way that the signature is changed without them having to do much of any work.

And as history has shown, the vast majority of malware out there, even when new, targets patched security vulnerabilities. Zero-day exploits are hard to get their hands on, and extremely valuable... so most won't waste their time, when it's easy to find holes just by seeing what's been patched and public knowledge.

In practice, AV software is your last line of defense... and is by far the weakest and least likely to work.
