Unlocking A Character
Welcome back to the city!
If you unlocked the slot the Mastermind is in, you would still need to either buy the Mastermind AT in the store, or become VIP to play it.
If you unlock then delete a character later, you'll have an empty slot you can make a new character in. You won't be able to reappropriate that 'slot' to unlock another character (becoming VIP for a month then lapsing might make you rechoose, but I've not tried to confirm that).

This was probably asked a thousand times but I'd like clarification. I played City of Villains when it first came out but only played for a year. If I unlock my Mastermind character would I be able to play him? or will I have to purchase something again? Also if I unlock a character then delete it, will my server unlocks go up by one or will there just be an empty slot?

Just thought I'd add here: the MM unlock is permanent on your account, and global. You pay something like $10 (I forget exactly, it's $10 or $12) but then Masterminds are unlocked for you on all servers, for as many as you want to play.
If you're sure you want to stay as premium and play without a subscription, I think a couple of unlocks are a pretty good deal and can really add to the whole "Premium play experience."
VIP is the best deal in the long run. But if you're interested only in the short run, unlocks will make your experience better.
I also thought I'd add: you have 36 slots now on each server. Rather than unlock and delete the Mastermind, just use the scrollbars underneath the character selection, find an empty slot, and unlock that. Then you always have your MM to come back to, should you decide to play Masterminds again. You can also re-arrange the character list by dragging and dropping, so any characters you currently play are easy to find.
Alright, thanks guys for clearing it up for me.
1) Unlocking masterminds requires 13 Paragon Reward Tokens slotted into your reward tree OR subscribing for VIP until you reach those 13 tokens for permanent unlock OR buying the archetype directly from the Paragon Market.
2) Yes, you can delete a character and reuse that slot to unlock a locked character. I have done this at least a few times.
Essentially, an empty slot on a server is "unlocked".
The only times you can't move a slot are when they are tied to a server, which means they can't be moved to another server, or when they are specifically tied to a character.
I think they should let you... but make it completely 100% absolutely clear that you must also buy X, Y, and Z to be able to actually play it. Not a simple click-through dialog that no one will ever read.

Go to their homes with a video camera and an electric cattle prod and tape them while they write an affidavit explaining how the feature works and reading it on camera, and every time they make a mistake shocking their naughty parts?
Face it while the company can and should make every feasible effort to make the information readily available, they will never get 100% dissemination because you can't force people not to ignore stuff.

What I see is the one character, locked, hovering over the character itself, and then over the actual Unlock icon at the top of the screen.
If I recall correctly, at least back during Beta you used to be able to click the character and unlock them. That may still be the case for a character that is not of an Archetype that is not locked. But clicking on my character doesn't do anything, I have to actually click on the Unlock icon at the top of the screen. Doing so gives me the following popup.
I don't see how it could be made more clear, but as the Freedom Player Summit showed this weekend the Devs are more than willing to listen to suggestions.
594rk, welcome back to the game. I always love to see when people come back to the game.
If you played for a year, then you should have 5 Paragon Reward Tokens. If you look at the top of your character select screen you'll see the Paragon Rewards icon (where mine says Unspent Tokens: 0). Click on it and it will bring up the Paragon Rewards window. You should see something like this.
Tiers 1 through 3 should already be filled and for Remaining Tokens you should have 0. Based on your statement of 1 year played, plus one for have a retail code applied (CoV). 12 months / 3 = 4 tokens for previous subscription.
If you actually have more Tokens, then Remaining Tokens will list ho many. You can slot them into any of the slots of the next Tier up. Hovering over each Slot will tell you what it grants. You must fill an entire Tier to slot into the Tier above it.
If you look to the gauge on the right, hovering over the gold markers going up the right side of the gauge, it will show you the bonuses you get for filling each Tier.
As a Premium Player, you gain more Paragon Reward Tokens (PRT) by purchasing Paragon Points for use on the Paragon Market. One PRT is granted for your first purchase of Paragon Points and for each 1200 points purchased.
More detailed information can be found at Paragon Wiki.
I updated the wiki page with the license interactions discussion here. I'm still in the process of finding a concise way to document the preemie/VIP/preemie server slot shuffle, but it will also be added before the end of the night.

EDIT: I updated it again to include the Preem/VIP switch and to more specifically talk about the difference between global and server slots.
