Quote:Agreed. If you look at the Katana vs. Longsword video, there was significant damage to the Katana at its tip. Whether the damage was caused before the video or not is not known and the metal armor seemed to be rather flexible compared to some of the more rigid armors so going through a few sets of full plate armor would destroy the blade.
Looks like a light breastplate (think conquistadors), not full armor. Stuff that isn't really meant to turn a thrust with a sword, but will repel strikes by lighter blades and knives.
I'd like to see them take it up against a properly layered armor setup.
As to the damage to the sword, yep. Broke the edge right off. NOT something you're going to buff out with a whetstone (at least not in a reasonable amount of time). -

you are so wrong even if you clicked your heals together 3 times and said there's no place like home you would still end up in a different universe.
edit: that sword is teh shizznit. i wonder if the most interesting man in the world has one in his collection?

Quote:I'm glad you're so sure. It must be a great comfort to you to be so sure in your wrongness.Um I'm pretty sure a samuria could easil slice throgh a knights armor + swords in 1 slash.

They're not magic. Throw out all the chop-socky, samurai, and ninja flicks you've ever seen. They're a very good sword that's been perfected for a specific variety of combat over hundreds of years.Quote:Katans are just so much suprerior that Europ is luck they never fought with japan back in the medevial age.
But cutting through plate steel (or even 18 gauge chain) is not something it's going to do. Of if it somehow does, it WON'T be doing it again as the edge will look something like this afterward.
Give this essay a read.
Note the portion about halfway down talking about the katana.
Quote:As a sword, the Japanese katana is unmatched in its sharpness and cutting power. Furthermore, it is particularly good at cutting against metal (–but no, it only cuts through other swords in movies and video games!). However, Medieval plate armor is well known for its resistance to cutting, and cutting at a moving target hidden by a shield or a greatsword is not easy. While the edge of a katana is very strong with a sharp cutting bevel, it is a thick wedge shape and still has to move aside material as it cuts. Though this is devastating on a draw slice against flesh and bone, it is much less effective against armors. Realizing this, several styles of Japanese swordsmanship devised specific techniques not to cut at armor, but to stab and thrust at the gaps and joints of it just as the Europeans did against their own plate armor. The primary technique for fighting nearly any kind of armor with most any kind of sword is not to cut but to thrust at the gaps and joints. -

Okay! Had a successful run tonight!
Granted, we were all mostly running in excess of 100% defense, but hey!
New badgers were:
Bubbleshot
Hypnagogia
Bounty-Killer
Manic Sonja
Pics or it didn't happen?
Pics here.

Thanks again Imp, for the leadership (and not talking the pool power). -
ZOMFG! BEWBS! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
Because no child over the age of birth has ever seen a female breast. Let alone two of them.
People nowadays have too much time to worry about pointless crap and it's making them (and by extension, their children) stupid.

I'm getting MIGHTILY sick of having to do "kill # [Faction]" missions with squishies because of the tethering mechanism. ESPECIALLY when, instead of trying to attack me, they run all over the place.
Then invariably hit the tether, regen EVERYTHING I just spent time whittling off them, AND ARE NOT SHEDDING AGGRO.
I had a "Defeat 5 Destroyers" mission and tried to jump a Big Dog. I had him down to about 33% HP after chasing him all over his tether zone in the park in Imperial City. He hit his range cap and went unhittable, regenned everything, and walked back to his starting point, from which he proceeded to Hurl a boulder at me.
Please pardon my Rikti, but this is absolute BULLCRAP.
I can handle the running. It's annoying as hell, but I can cope.
I can handle the tethering (going unhittable and walking back to starting position). It's annoying as hell but I can cope.
But the fact that they get 100% HP back and aren't losing aggro on you is just ridiculous!
Please, for the love of Bob, FIX THIS. Either that or rip one or BOTH of these mechanisms out of the damn game.
I should NOT be having to jump on grey-conning mobs just because I can't insta-kill anything else before this run away-tether crap kicks in.
I understand that you want to prevent griefing from dragging mobs into areas populated by people who may not be ready to handle them. However, I think the situation and it's frequency are vastly exaggerated. Leaving this setup as a solution in search of a problem. -
Oi vey.
European and Japanese swords are meant for very different types of warfare.
A katana's a great slashing weapon, good when your opponent is not armored or is in some sort of plant/animal-derivative armor. Against someone in chain mail, or even brigandine, it's not so effective, and you're probably better off using a club if you can't get to an exposed area.
European swords aren't meant as slashing weapons. Yes, they have something of an edge on them, but they're, for all intents and purposes, highly specialized bludgeoning weapons. The edge they carry facilitates the concentration of force in the blow and helps transmit energy through metal armors and into the wearer. The tip isn't meant to slice into anything, it's meant to be PUSHED into enemies, using the wielder's full weight and depending, again, on concentration of force at the tip to take care of the armor displacement.
It's like comparing a tank to a jet. -

Why not simply make this an SG event with Mid-Level Crisis (the marketing SG) on Freedom?
It'd be the highest investment level of course, but so what? The base is already, functionally, done (all telepads, near-max storage, raid ready, etc) for all intents and purposes.
As such, it's primo territory for a crass display of conspicuous over-indulgence like this.

Quote:Hello all,
I already have a new GTX460, and am looking for a new CPU, mobo, and memory, and have a $500 budget. I'm shopping around right now and am looking at Core i5 or i7 tech, but any advice would be greatly appreciated
Coming in slightly above your budget here.
- Memory: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ
- Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D-E LX LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
- CPU: Intel Core i7-870 Lynnfield 2.93GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor BX80605I7870
Backing down on the CPU to the 2.8 saves you EXACTLY $0 (or at least it did when I looked at it, Newegg's pricing can be...fluid... sometimes).
This'll get you a decent amount of memory, a decent motherboard (have built with a couple of these), and a nice CPU.
If you want to trade back down to an i5, you could bump your RAM or go with a different board. But this one'll do pretty much anything you need. -
Damn you for bringing this up.
I had high hopes for the Ultraverse series of books. It's been over 15 years since Marvel gave Malibu the flush-and-swirly treatment and I'm STILL bitter over it.
AND I INTEND TO STAY THAT WAY DAMMIT! -
As to the advice above, here's a really quick and dirty build.
It can be tightened up a lot, but this is a start.

Quote:I may be able to make Mondays again, in a week or two. Currently I am hauling kids around between 7:45 and 8:00 PM CDT, which means I am always too late to join. Theoretically that will change back to 7:30, sometime soon, which means I might be able to make 8 PM.
I really enjoyed the hand full of runs I got to do with you guys -- was a total blast.
Just an FYI, we don't SOLELY run TFs. So if you're in a bit late, it's no biggie. Just shoot me a message. -
Quote:Different game with different drivers stresses cards differently.i have been playing world of warcraft for countless hours as well i know its not my video card i updated to the beta nvidia drivers 260.63 before i had 258.96 and haven't seen the glitch so far.
'Nuff said. -
Sorry, when I saw Dark/Faire I bust out laughing.
"What? Does he run in and bellow "What ho knaves!" -
Ran into this one on a Tanker Tuesday. BOY did it hurt.
The one I try to avoid is "You're a Cruel One Mr. Phipps."
With all the defense debuff and psi from Arachnos, I have to run it even con x1 or I just get thwacked, on a tank that's well ABOVE defense cap. Actually made the mistake of running this for a TT on Protector a while back. Bad move. Death fest!
The one that really clued me into how tough these missions are was the "Debutante" one with all the carnies.
I was able to finish off groups at +2x8, but I was stopping and huffing (like pre-stamina lowbie stopping and huffing) after every group. Took FOREVER to get through. -
Quote:A lot of it comes down to "How much is your time worth to you?" really.I feel really sorry for anyone that pays that much for something that has such little return. And shame on you for asking that much. I can do 310 hero tip missions(including the morality mission) and get that for free.
If you can't use it, you're better off asking to trade it for something that you can use - save yourself the ridiculous 10%, and the other party saves as well.
At this time, I could easily afford this. If I wanted it "RIGHT NAO!", didn't feel like spending two months or so doing tips I might (might) feel it was worth dropping this much inf for.
Also, it's 330 tip missions ((10 tip + 1 morality)x30). -

Okay, it's roughly 9 Eastern and nobody's here today (yet...I hope).
Anyhoo, a couple people have asked about another day (either moving it to, or in addition to).
How would Friday be for you guys? If it's an additional day, we could also afford to start earlier so that we can get stuff knocked out and still have playtime available to east coasters.
Maybe Friday, 7 PM Eastern and going until people get sick of it? -

Quote:When you've had to cut a friend out of a liquid latex outfit in a club bathroom with EMT scissors, being VERY careful not to nick anything or pull out a piercing, you realise that there needs to be a balance between sheer fabulousness and practicality.
Well, just a little bit.
PS: Oddly not as bad as the piercing/chainmail leotard/chinese ring trick interface incident.
All I can say is that if you had to cut her out of them, it became "shear" fabulousness. -
So, you're trying to sell something off-market because:
- You don't have the listing fee unless you supremely lowball it and take a chance on someone snapping it up at a low price. OR
- You don't want to pay out the listing fee and sale fees.
Well, good luck. Hopefully you'll make enough in the next couple days to list it. -
