Well, it's working now. I set the properties to "Run as Administrator" then I restarted and tried again. Not sure what made a difference. It just seemed like it was getting that error only when the updater tried to start up.
Thanks for the help,
Grizz -
Quote:I've tried that, and I still get the same message.Right-click on the executable and select "Run As Administrator".
If that works, you can navigate to the executable itself, right-click and select the Compatibility tab and check the checkbox for "Run as Administrator" so it runs that way by default in the future.

Hey there,
I'm trying to install CoX onto my my system. The client gives me an error message that states:
"Error opening file C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.tmp
You may be out of disk space or trying to install to an location where you have insufficient permissions."
It's a brand new computer with 400gb+ of space, and I'm not sure what it means by permissions. It's Windows 7 Home Premium.
Any help would be appreciated,

I hope no one minds if I use this thread as a reference in a paper I'm writing. My topic is the positive and negative aspects of video games. This is definitely in the positive pile,
.

PS- It might surprise people, but in my research there has been no academic study of families that game together. At least, not that I have found. -
Thanks for the replies,
We'll adjust our strategy for the last part of that mission when we try this again next week. I think we might add a few people as well. Actually having a Dominator on the team to freeze the waves would be useful,.
Grizz -
Is the last mission in the Barracuda SF supposed to include an seemingly endless series of ambushes while you try to fight Reichsman? Or is that a bug?
I ask because our 5 person team simply could not survive the volume of enemies.
Grizz -
Well, to be honest a corruptor would have greater buffs and do more damage than the build you have. One problem with this build would be all the redraw animations that you will encounter.
For better mileage, I'd recommend deleting this one and rolling a Corruptor.

I should be able to make it. It's been a while since I've played my tank, I'll have to dust him off and remember what all those buttons do again, :P.

Quote:Current endurance to upgrade all six pets is 90 points.I understand it reduces setup time by a good deal to have the Equip and Upgrade powers AoE, but they're just so endurance expensive now.
It used to cost 260 or so points.
So, the change to the upgrade powers actually reduce setup time AND endurance cost.

[QUOTE=GhoulSlayer;2421611]Great advice thanks again. I clicked on the link from your first post "Click this DataLink to open the build!" and tried to read the file but couldn't figure out what program to use to read it. I'm guessing that I have to download Mid's to be able to read it? QUOTE]
That would be correct. Use the link above it to take you to the download site for Mid's.

Well, I would recommend picking up Mid's planner and playing with the builds that you can create. The link is at the top of the build I provided.
As to which powers to take away, let me state which powers from FF I consider keepers. Force Bolt( cause it's required ), Deflection Shield, Insulation Shield, and Dispersion Bubble.
Those are my keepers, other powers to consider:
Personal Force Field is great as an "Oh Crap!" power, and it can function fine with the slot it comes with. Force Bubble can be fun, especially if you're Tankerminding. Just be aware that running all the Leadership powers and the FF toggle can get expensive( endurance wise).
I understand your desire to have full IO sets on your powers, but consider that some sets don't allways have the bonuses you might want, or some sets have the bonuses that you might want without needing all six IOs. For example, I slot my damage resist powers with the first five IOs from the Aegis set. The sixth, Psi Resist/Status is hard to get and the fith set bonus from slotting it is meh( IMO ). So to save money, and a slot, I only put in five of the six IOs.
There are other examples where half sets and 'Frankenslotting' can more benificial then a full set can be. It depends on the goals that you might have in mind for your build. In a high Endurance use powerset ( like Poison ), you might favour sets that provide a Recovery bonus over defense bonus.
Like I said, it depends on how you want to develope your character. Pick up Mid's planner and play with the possibilities.

Welcome to City of Heroes.
My first recomendation is to pick up Mid's Hero and Villain Planner from the Titan Network. It's a very powerful tool.
Link: http://www.cohplanner.com/
Create your build on Mid's and post it here with the export function. Then we can critique your build and make recommendations.
Grizz -
Okay I'll bite and provide a sample build from Mid's with IOs.
Here's some notes on the build:
- I slotted Force bolt with the slots I had left over, so I put in Forced Feedback set to get a few points of KB as a nice set bonus.
- Instead of Detention Field I choose Life Drain. Doing a little extra damage, while healing yourself and debuffing the enemy all at once.
- Soul Extraction: All four pet unique auras to protect your pets even more.
- Lich does virtually no damage, slot it for hold fear and debuffs.
- In choosing IO sets I focused on the ones that are uncommon( Yellow ) for several reasons:
1. Uncommon recipes are generally easier/cheaper to aquire
2. Uncommon recipes do not need rare ( Orange ) salvage to make, at nearly 1mil each they increase the cost of your build quickly.
3. I find the bonuses in the uncommon sets to be more beneficial.
I hope this helps,
Grizz

As usual, someone will extol the virtues of a petless mastermind. Sadly, some people get confused about the difference between a mastermind and a corrupter. A petless mastermind is barely playable, and cannot complete most of the high end story arcs( which all have EBs) without teaming or resorting to heavy use of temp powers. With damage output worse than a Defender's secondary and buff/debuff abilities that are worse than a corrupters, petless masterminds are very weak and do not bring much to a team.
As has been mentioned before: If you want to play without pets, don't make a mastermind.
If you want a challenge when playing the game, wait until Issue 16 comes out and you can raise the difficulty settings to near insane levels. I'm itching to try soloing 8-man spawns at +4 levels with a few characters I have.
And Nightingale, I respect your opinion on petless masterminds, but the reason why PUGs don't "understand the beauty of the petless MM" is because most players have an appreciation for what each of the ATs are capable of. A mastermind with pets is quite capable of taking down EBs with SOs only. A petless mastermind's best quality is mooching xp from a team, and is best used( until Issue 16 ) to bump up the spawn size.

If I have a few hours this afternoon I'll log into Test and run amok with my Zombies and see what happens. It might also be a good idea to run some Ouroboros story arcs and see what happens when you zone at different levels.

Quote:how about raising the cap on infamy/influence, since it is capped at 2 billion, reason ---we have several purple sets that cost over 1 billion and when you are trying to fully purple out a character you would have to keep asking for help to transferr or logg in another account, my suggestion is to raise cap to 10 billion,i know it may sound like alot but to the die-hard gamers most would understand i hope, what do you all think???
I think the Suggestion and Idea forums are this-a-way:

I got a Beta key and gave Champions Online a shot. My overall impression is meh.
Pros:
-It is based on a PnP game so that most of the in game universe will be familiar to anyone who has played it.
-Lots of costume options. Including animated animal parts, and different stances.
-The public missions were an interesting game mechanic, but CoH already has something similar in Zone Events( Steel Canyon Fires for example).
-Travel powers are available upon leaving the Tutorial zone( I got mine at level 3!).
-Obviously designed to be ported to the Xbox platform.
Cons:
-Very few instance missions. I can see griefing opportunities in the way many of the missions are set up.
-Odd running animation for male characters. It kinda looks like their trying to carry a pickle in the caboose( if you catch my drift).
-Graphics in general look like they were inspired by the old Speed Racer cartoon, instead of an actual comic book artist.
-The game feels cheesy. The dialog was routinely cheesy( and annoying when some of the NPC allies spammed it nonstop). The scene at the end of the Tutorial zone was really over the top. The player gets thanked by all the NPCs of the Tutorial zone in a scene that looks and feels like the ending of Star Wars: A New Hope, and all because the #1 Hero of the City let you push the button that fired the cannon that took down the alien mothership. Yeah, that warrants giving you the key to the city( despite the sarcasm in that last statement, they do in fact give you the key, then ship you off to Canada,).
-Chat system is limited, with no tabs or multiple chat windows as an option.
-I did not like the UI. There was very little in the way to customize it. Being able to increase the size of the map window would have been useful.
-The crafting tutorial was a single mission that had to be done in a live combat zone. The explanation in the mission was too short and the constant interruptions only made things worse( it's hard to read about a required part of character development when a headless corpse is trying to take your head).
-Champions may have a list of 12 travel powers, but most of them are variations of Fly. Jet Boots, Hover Disk, Ice Slide, Fire Flight, Earth Flight, Hover, and Flight all worked on the same principle: One direction of travel was faster than any other. Ex- Hover Disk can travel up really fast, but all other motion is slow.
-For anyone who likes gritty anti-heroes or vigilantes, this is not the game for you. The syrupy sweetness of the dialog, the garish colouring of the people and zones makes it pretty much impossible. It's difficult to be emo when you're surrounded by Hello Kitty paraphernalia.
Conclusion: It's a super hero themed MMO, but it's not CoH 2. I'm happy here thank you very much.

Quote:It's hard to say. The devs have not released the drop rates for many of the recipe pools. What information has been collected has been compiled at http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Main_Page . For Pool A recipes and Invention Salvage, the drop rates from Bosses are higher. We just don't know for sure about the other pools, and the devs don't want us to know for sure since some players will try to milk the system. Thanks, interesting!
I wonder for other pools, though. Is the drop rate for bosses say > 3x that for minions?
Quote:Because in level 5 missions currently, you get spawns of 3 minions, 1 min + lieut, or 1 boss.

Check out the Overview page for Issue 16:
http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/gam..._overview.html
Scroll down near the bottom, under the section Enhanced Difficulty Options. Cool stuff,.
Grizz -
Quote:Well, it is true that higher ranks are more likely to drop Pool A recipes, however it has never been proven that Very Rare Purple recipes are part of that drop pool. The devs, wisely, have chosen not to divulge the drop rate information of purple recipes. All that is known for certain is that an enemy must be lvl 47 of higher, and that the chances of a drop is in the order of 1 in 5000.However, higher ranks (bosses over lieutenants, e.g.) are more likely to drop purples.
But I suppose it's not that much more to overwhelm a zergling rush of difficulty 2. :-/
If you want the challenge, certainly go for a higher challenge setting. Just remember that Malicious( level 2), and Ruthless( level 4 ), will generally give larger spawns. Which results in more enemies, which results in more chances for 'teh fatz lootz', so to speak, :P.
Of course with Issue 16( Beta started today), my above advice may change with the new changes to the difficulty system. We'll see.
