  1. Well, that didn't go so well. First mission wasn't too bad and was rather epic, but that second one is... ridiculous. I'll get it down, but those swords do some ridiculous damage and defense debuff, and the nanite bombs or whatever are even worse. They're constantly firing, and I can't even find consistency to them. They seem to be on a timer and go off at the same time: not whether you have been standing still for awhile. Even so, however, I had bombs start in on me when I was running or jumping through the air, which did not seem consistent.

We didn't pass it for a few reasons. Didn't help that we fell apart when Battle Maiden fell apart, then we had a team member be quite unhelpful, not work with the team, and then quit. We actually made some progress afterward, but not enough. A key to this mission seems to be an ability to joust. It's easier to do with ranged damage, but Scrappers, Brutes, and Tanks can do it as well. It's a lot to keep track of with all the bombs dropping, but it should be doable. Better luck next time, I guess.
  2. Hey all. Want to at least try one of the new TFs tonight, and we can try to get this done before the Hami Raid for those that wanted to join it (I'll try to get on earlier than 7 Central if I can). So, shooting for the Apex TF and want to have a good crew going before we log in. You must have your Alpha slot slotted for this Task Force. I'll be running with Grey Pilgrim, so a good mix of damage and support would be good.

Think I have one person already lined up, so shout out if you want one of the remaining spots.

    1. Grey Pilgrim (tank)
    2. Battle Priest
  3. Don't really have any pink characters, and was wanting to run at least the Apex TF tonight. Will try to do it beforehand, I guess.
  4. Sounds like they tried to make it a challenge, heh. Will be interesting to check them out.

With the non-resist damage, I wonder if the Heal/Recharge Alpha slot will be nicer to have for GP than the Cardiac I'm working on now.

Thanks much, guys, looking forward to the Alpha slot version

Uninstalled again, ran it as an admin, still have the popups. Not sure what to do about it. Don't see an mhd.mhz file anywhere in my Mid's folder, either.
  6. Yeah, the in game chart has each tree side connected, so now I don't know what to think. *sighs* It'd be nice to have some clearer info on this, as it's hard to plan out with what we have.

No, what I was asking is if I could make an uncommon Radial boost, and use that to make a partial core revamp later on, which is in a different tree in the Cardial line. Because for some reason, there is no resist damage boost in the Core line at the uncommon level, and that's how far we can currently unlock. Eventually, however, the Core line boosts more of your resist damage (not sure why they set up the uncommons as they did, to be honest).

I don't want to waste incarnate shards, etc., on a line of the Cardiac boost that I'm not going to use... I only have so much time to play the game! I have no interest in making two Cardiacs on one character, as only the Core Paragon is of interest to me at the end of the line. If I have extra shards on my Fire/Fire Tanker, I'd rather have an alternate Spiritual boost for the +recharge and +heal.

I'm going to guess that they are going to lock them out, given how the lines are on this graph and in game, but I'm not happy about it. So I either have to get an uncommon in a line I don't want to go further in, or sit with an uncommon that is only partially the boost I want until they let us go further with the Alpha Boost. *sighs* End reduc is nice, but range does squat for me.
  8. Anyone know how the higher tiers of the alpha slot boosts work?

For the uncommon level, I'm going to want a Radial boost, as that ups my resistance and end reduc. However, the end boost I want to get is "Core Paragon," as Radial Paragon doesn't boost what I want as much. If I make a Radial boost, am I not going to be able to switch to the Core side later on?

If so... that's kind of annoying, as I either have to make even more Cardiac enhancements to be ready when they make higher levels, or just sit at the common boost level for a long while (or get the uncommon that doesn't help me much when it just adds on to my range). Want to know for sure before I spend shards I should not.
  9. I like the concept and it's working pretty well. Shard rate is pretty decent, too (GP had 4 drop while doing five tip missions, which wasn't shabby... had another 6 drop on an ITF where we were going fast and not defeating too much). So that's nice for those of us who can only TF so much in a week.

Got my Cardiac slotted so I can try out the new TFs, and I'm a decent ways toward getting the Uncommon Boost to up GP's resists as well, which will be nice and welcome (I would agree that seeing the numbers displayed better in game would help... I can see that the end use went down in powers, but not so much of how the Alpha Boost helped there). Already noticing the end reduc boost: no issues, even with the new Leadership toggle.

The new arc can be auto-completed if you really want as well, but it's easy to pick up teams. Ran it through with my Earth/Storm Controller on a big team last night, and will try to do so with a few others as soon as I can (might wait for some of them until I hear someone wants to run it). Getting the shards and such for them will take much longer, though. I'm picking and choosing my favorite characters to do this with, and some aren't 50 yet. Definitely not going to swing this with all of my alts.

    *added*

I've been respecing without a new edition of Mid's so it'll be nice when they make the new version work. Some I won't bother with until I can be sure on the end product for all the new powers and alpha stuff.
  10. Poor Avatea... DC bought her on the auction to petition for TF and mission changes. I can agree with him wanting them changed, but... still. Have fun on this long TF. I've still only managed Sara Moore out of all of the Shard TFs.
  11. Did you know coz actually has a Stone Tank? True story, I saw it once. Don't think it had any pants, either. Freaky.

    Happy birthday, coz.
  12. Gratz, Viv! Hope your birthday went well.
  13. I'd be fine with that. Are we running regular Isos tonight, or are people going to want to work on Incarnate stuff? I know I have a couple people that need to unlock Ramiel's stuff, but I can always do those another time.
  14. The Power Siphon stuff sounds like it has to be a bug as well, and was listed wrong. The power is not unlike build up, and wouldn't affect mobs directly, so having a taunt enhancement slotted wouldn't make sense.

But yes, note that some of the PBAOE stuff listed is for Gauntlet's effects, not it doing damage over an area.
  15. Having ST damage from a secondary does help. I fell back on EM's attacks a lot for my AR/EM: especially as I was working through all the Rikti arcs (the character's backstory had him being a part of Vanguard). Didn't need those as much when I was fighting Carnies, hehe. Got to love how they're weak to lethal attacks.
  16. Hmmm, no I didn't. He looked like a lot of images of death I have seen, so I didn't look closely enough to see if there were similarities. I'll have to look next time. Not sure if that was a good choice if it is true, as Voldemort is trying to avoid/taunt death as much as the first two brothers (I noted that the two brothers often have skeletal hands, though, and I think the third brother is never shown to have that: he always has a very human face for the animation, whereas the others are more in outline. I rather liked that choice).
  17. I actually have an nrg/nrg, as you called it, and that is quite flashy and packs a lot of oomph (it's hard not to feel powerful when you can send people flying, plus do good damage). You could also call it risky in that it relies on KB for mitigation. So you'd probably like that.

My E^3... I don't like as much. I'm not sure why, either. It helps to go for S/L and melee damage with that setup, as you are going to be up close to sap your targets (you also have a lot of hold options that you can run with as well). I think the nrg/nrg just is so much more visceral feeling with the KB, whereas you can stand in the middle of a mob with impunity once you drain a mob as an elec/elec. You have hard hitting ST attacks as well, so I'm not sure why I like one more over the other. Heck, my E^3 soloed Nosferatu as an EB, so I'm not sure what more I could ask for!

Still, you can end drain an entire mob as an E^3 with Power Sink and Short Circuit (you'll want to slot some for end mod with both), and then keep them that way with Lightning Field and your other attacks. That's useful on a team and solo, and can feel downright powerful.

That actually was the most distracting part to me as I couldn't help myself doing that rather than simply enjoying the film. Didn't really miss the parts they dropped and I liked showing instead of explaining, such as what Hermione did to protect her parents. Too many instances of "lets explain things in great detail" in the last few novels.

I also may have been in mourning over my favorite theater which was bought out back in March. For a while they were keeping all the specials from the old management including discount Tuesday's where all tickets to all showings, including 3D, was at one low price, less than even the standard matinee price along with a couple dollar discount on a small soda and popcorn. It was still in effect last August when I went to Scott Pilgrim but alas that's all gone now.
I note what is not in the books, I suppose, but I measure what is on the screen more than anything, and how that comes together. That's why I can still appreciate the LOTR movies and my wife hates them, perhaps (and she hadn't read them until I read them to her a couple of years ago).

I think the movie caught the book's essence pretty well, and how isolated they really felt (the staticky radio captures this nicely). The main things I don't like (that they really shouldn't have left out) is Harry's maturation and also Voldemort's presence. He's there in the beginning, but Godric's Hollow and the Malfoy's manor had an added terror to them because Voldemort is coming, Voldemort is getting closer, Voldemort is there!

Still, I'd say this is one of the better Potter movies. The best two are still The Order of the Phoenix and The Prisoner of Azkaban. They managed to capture the essence of those two stories and characters, and worked quite well as movies.

I thought the scene worked pretty well in the movie, but the snake coming out of Bagshot was even nastier in the book. They only hinted that it was coming out of her mouth in the movie and then saved us from the rest, heh. And like I said before, we had the added terror that Voldemort was getting closer and closer in the book. Probably was hard to convey that in the movie, but I did find that effect strong in the book.

I have learnt from past experience that if I read the book first, I will be looking for things in the movie, that might not make it, and it lessensed my enjoyment of the movie. Whilst if I see the movie first, then read the book, the book adds to the experience of the movie. I get to find out the internal workings of the scenes, like why someone does what they do in the movie. What was this character's thought process and so forth. It also gives me voices and images for my mental screen to play off of the events in the book.

So far, in my opinion, what was left out of the Potter movies from the books has not affected the story much at all - with the exception of Half-Blood Prince. In the book, Hermione and Ron had done much more research on this person. They had pretty much figured out that it was Snape (which of course Harry rejected for his own reasons - dislike of Snape being a big part). In the movie, there's a mention of Hermione going to the library, and mentions/showing that Harry is rather obsessed with reading his Adcanced Potions book and that's it until the end when Snape confesses that he is the Half-Blood Prince. Comparing those two leaves me disappointed in the film's dealing with the subject. Especially since it was the name of the movie. To only have it mentioned twice in the movie really made no sense.

On the other hand some things that the movies have added have been better than the books. In the movies, we can see that in HBP and DHp1 that Draco is scared spitless of Voldie. The books didn't convey this as well to me. I also liked how in HBP we actually see Draco repairing the Vanishing Cabinet. In the book, Harry knew that Draco was doing something in the Room of Requirement (and was rather obsessed with finding out about it), but we never know what he was doing until the end, when Hogwarts is invaded.

So yeah, always watch the movie first. I have the last book, but haven't cracked it open yet - and won't until next June - just to preserve my experience of the movie. And then I will probably go and reread all the books in order before I read the Deathly Hollows.
Hey, to each their own. I can't imagine how watching the movie first would make things better: you're going to compare the two at some point! But go with whatever works for you!

I dunno about the Draco stuff, though. It's pretty clear in Half Blood Prince that he doesn't quite want to do what he is doing for Voldemort, and that he is doing it more for his family than anything (Dumbledore emphasizes this when he is talking with Draco). But you haven't read the seventh book yet, either, I'm forgetting. You'll see more of that.

Getting to this rather late, I know, but for what it's worth, elves are mostly constrained by their oaths to their families (which is why the Malfoys are horrified by their former house elf using magic against them... not to mention having one steal a wand). There aren't very many free ones, and most of them that are free are upset about it. It's a fairly interesting and complicated situation, actually. Hermione finds that out when she tries to campaign for all house elves being freed.

Finally, I really liked the scene where the Snatcher guy is standing right in front of Hermione but he can't see her because of the wards, he can only smell her perfume.

I also thought the acting in this one is the best of all the movies so far, especially Emma Watson.
I'd agree that the visuals and acting were quite good in this movie. I also quite enjoyed the animation sequence: it was quite well done (I think that it could win an animated short award, actually).

This is the usual problem with a lot of book to movie adaptations: a lot of the nuance that makes the book great is left out. That's kind of the way of it, but it is rather unfortunate for the movie. If I hadn't read the book, I wouldn't really know how much Harry felt abandoned by his old mentor, or how frustrated he was by that. It was something I thought made the seventh book so good.

And actually, that was something I missed about the escape from the Malfoys and arriving at Shell Cottage: for once, Harry was really taking the lead, rather than reacting, as you said. That was a changing point for him as a character in the whole series.

I'm dubious how much of that they'll be able to bring out (though I'm sure his arriving at the grove will be good... it seemed powerful just in the trailer this fall), but him actually shaking off his protectors and mentors, and thinking for once? I don't know.
  20. Ah, I guess I could have appreciated that more if they reference it in the preview. I just heard some guy shouting that they need to get the Green Hornet, and it seemed like it was the other guy they should really be worried about, heh.

Anyway, I guess I could get more behind the idea if it wasn't Seth Rogan playing the part. I dunno, but he annoys the heck out of me, rather than being entertaining.
  21. Saw one of the previews before Harry Potter last night. I'm beginning to long for action and trailers that do not cut every half second and look disjointed. Sheesh. Looked moderately fun, but the preview does leave me wondering why the Green Hornet is the hero and not Kato.

Well, keep in mind you can do this with any powerset that has KB. An En/En Blaster can Hover above a mob and do this if you want. I personally just chase down mobs that actually do get knocked down (not hard to do with ranged attacks), but I know you can do this as well if you want.

To the OP, I would say En/En is fun, but if you don't like overkilling everything with damage and kb (heh, my En/En Blaster is called Maximum Overkill), there are plenty of other interesting sets. Archery is a great mix of AOE and ST, and if you like archers (a lot of people do), you're golden. If guns are more your thing, AR is better for AOE, and has more of a gadgety feel since you don't just shoot bullets with your rifle. Dual Pistols is pretty solid for AOE and isn't bad for ST damage, either.

More than just those, of course, but those are quite solid.
  23. AR is quite good for AOE (and one of its AOEs, Buckshot, complements your ST damage nicely). M80 + Full Auto is up on mine pretty much every other mob (and I don't IO for recharge too much with my Blasters), and that will drop most minions, allowing me to Buckshot, Burst, and Slug any remaining harder targets.

My secondary is EM, which does help out with the ST damage. He can chain stun a boss and pound them down, pretty much. But AR isn't that bad for ST damage, either. I've dropped EBs with this guy relying on the AR powers only (because I didn't want to close to melee range with them). With a bit of slotting and recharge, Burst, Slug, and Buckshot can work for an ST attack chain that isn't very slow.

If you stick it out with Devices, realize that you can be safer if you toss out cal trops, etc., before a fight. You don't have build up, but you can prepare well before a fight to get it done. Redraw shouldn't be much of an issue, either, as most of Devices's powers should be tossed out before you start shooting. Also... Targeting Drone's noise should be fading out for you after it is activated: mine fades away after a few seconds. So the activation might be annoying, but if you leave it on, you won't hear it much.

This is a great way of looking at the mechanic. For how open-ended and friendly to customization City of Heroes, it's amazing how often people try to pigeon hole themselves. The endurance bar (and heck, the health bar) can represent a lot of different things depending on the character and powerset.

This is something that teams will differ on. Is this a master run of some kind? Do I mind if one of the scrappers gets in over their head? We have three controllers / three defenders / three blasters: this makes a difference. Are we fighting stuff that my defensive set does not work well on? Malta? Devouring Earth? Rogue Vanguards?

If your team needs tanking, you set the pace, and you set a cautious pace. You con mobs and look for hidden mobs. You pull and you corner pull. You expect buffs. You are ready to die.

If your team does not need tanking, you hang back with the low hit point people and make sure nothing annoys them, and then go DPS as you are able. This too is a worthwhile job, even if you aren't leading the charge.
Well, not a big deal perhaps, but as a tank, you can always set the pace. On a less than ideal team, you can slow the pace down. If your team is steamrolling, that just means you can leave one mob more quickly and move on to the next (while the team is finishing up with the first mob). To my mind, a tank should always be out front, taking damage and setting up the mob you will be facing.

I know it's my personal preference, but I do think that works better, rather than hanging back ever (and if things go south, they're going to go south more by the mob). My Controllers or Scrappers can do pretty well taking the alpha, reducing damage, etc., but they're not going to say no to a tank taking the damage (alpha or otherwise) or clumping up mobs for them, either. Same thing for my Brute, to be honest, even though he's not all IO'd out yet.
