Quote:God, you are *sooo* correctSorry, Gangrel, but revenge trumps reason. Even if the revenge will actively hurt yourself and ensure the things you don't want to happen will happen, while being completely and totally ineffective (hahaha... boycotting, yeah, like those have worked for gaming in the past).
The cries for boycotting are purely based on emotions... unfortunately, such untempered emotions are doing absolutely nothing in helping us liberate CoH from the clutches of NCSoft, if not actually harming the efforts. But people refuse to see that, because they're only trying to make themselves feel better, to hell with the game!
*sets fire to his CoX collection*
NOOOOOOOOO!, My komputah! -
Quote:I don't see where the false equivalency is. All I did was point out that Paragon Studio's were *just* as bad as Arena.NetDon't try and distract us from the argument with false equivalencies . I would not expect anyone playing Auto Assault or TR to keep playing COH for the same reason I think anyone who wants to keep playing GW2 who plays COHis an a$$hole.
If they shut down a game you say you love but you keep giving them your money then you are an ******* idiot. If you defend your idiocy then you an *******.
Why did I still support City of Heroes? Because I still *enjoyed* the game. I still had a lot of friends who played the game, and to be honest, it sucks not being able to play the same game as them.
Sure, I loved TR, and had a fling with Auto Assault.. but I still loved and enjoyed City of Heroes (when I didn't burn out on it). So I still supported it, played it, complained about it. But I *never* once thought twice about not giving Paragon Studios my money when I wanted to.
Yes, it sucks... yes it hurts... but if you are going to go around and accuse Arena.net of being bad and sleeping with the enemy, then Paragon Studios are just as guilty of it. -
Quote:No offense, but if you are going to take that point of view, then Paragon Studios should have done something similar when Auto Assault and TR were closed downFrankly? Yep. They're in bed with traitors. Sorry guys and gals of ArenaNet. You should totally buy yourselves out of their grasp.
Mike
/maybe a teensy bit harsh... but then, we're bein' treated a lot worse harse, IMO.
So, why dont you blame Paragon Studio's for not getting away from NCsoft a few years ago...
See, although you are blaming Arena.net for sleeping with the enemy, you ahve to remember that Paragon Studio's slept with the enemy whilst 2 other MMO's were closed down. -
Quote:Going from previous experience... unused gametime will get refunded back to you (from what i can remember, it was from the time of accouncement).Yeah, so far we don't know if we'll be refunded for that either, or for all our unused points.
Points, i cannot comment on... because the CoX model also included 400 points per month, there is probably no internal method of going by "what you used" if you bought points when you had "free points" in the bank.
*shrugs*
If someone bought $15 of points at the start of freedom, and aquired via subscribing another 8 months worth of points... but only just now spent 1000 points, how much money would they be refunded? -
Quote:Going from previous experience of NCsoft closing MMO's (ie Auto Assault and TR)... the remaining game time from the *time of announcement* was refundedAnd those three months will not do much for players that paid for chunks of game time in advance, unless we're getting reimbursed for any paid time past 11/30. I won't even get into the SBE's I purchased that I'll now never get to use nor the superpacks I spent a good portion of discretionary income on.
3 months more or less is 12 weeks, which may be a lot of time to some, but not to me. For example, look how fast this summer went by... -
Be careful who you accuse of freeloading now... someone has already said that their payment *didn't* go out when it was meant to, and they only found out when they logged into the game, and were on (as you put it) freeloader status.
If they had just checked just a couple of hours earlier, they would have been able to resub without any problems (although it would have been interesting to say the least).
Of course... seeing as we don't know how reupping runs now, chances are you could well be a freeloader in terms of what is available to you. -
Unfortunately, it means that those who were going to resub, are unable to (I was due to resub this weekend),
So bleah... -
Yep, purely coincidental in my mind. The decision for the date of beta would have been finalized a couple of weeks ago
*edit* This is because i now view beta's as a purely advertising with minimal bug fixing (to be honest, the bugs that they would fix are the ones that generally only pop up when large number of player appear. And fine tuning the balancing of powers etc).
It is now *very* rare to actually do a proper open beta of an online game, where it is still raw in feel, where things can do a 180 spin at the drop of a hat due to how the playerbase feels about it.
((Champions Online patch from beta to retail being a notable exception to this one...)) -
Quote:The slashing of the development staff was because of Eve Online player backlash, especially considering that Eve Online was on semi shakey financial grounds....Great, now I'm worried...
Well The Secret World it is for me then.
Last I heard, they have increased the staffing levels up a bit (down from the couple of hundred that they had initially) but still "tight knit".
For me, I always had a view point that there would be PvP involved... however, i do believe that they would be *seriously* dumb to make it non consensual open world PvP...
*shrugs* As i said, it is still early days for the MMO really, and I honestly believe that CCP will try to make it the best that they can (and not as a themepark style MMO, but more of the sandbox MMO that it should be). -
Quote:There is still a UK meet up running (its stickied on this forum). If you can make it, pop along!I hadn't logged in for about 4 years til last week, I'd absolutely loved CoX when I started back in 2005 (and even before then, playing on my brother's account). Although I'd moved on, I was always happy to see CoX still going and it always remained one of my firm favourite games (and kudos to whoever designed the peacebringer powers- the gfx is beautiful!). The number of friends I made over the years and the fun I had....
SW:G was my first MMO, and seeing that go was like seeing a mutant squirrel be put out of its misery. CoX was my second- and on hearing the news, I really did feel a sense of loss
Makes me regret I never went to any of the UK meetups. They sounded like a good laugh! Thanks to all you devs, you made a superb game. I'm going to go get some screenshots of villains being tornadoed and radiant striked.... -

Last i read... sales was only 200K, so retention had better be good... because you can quite easily loose up to 60% of the initial playerbase between 3-6 months, and then you *should* hit some form of stability.

Quote:PM's have been enabled for *all* Forum accounts...Zwill, any chance you could make me a VIP forum member so I can PM some people goodbye?
If not, no worries. Thanks for being a (mostly) good sport over the years.
I'm sure your bright eyes will find somewhere new. Best of luck on the job hunt. I am sure there will be something out there for you. -
Quote:That weekend was a killer for me... copious alcohol consumption (before the event), copious energy drink consumption (around 40 odd cans over the weekend), stupid amounts of coffee and minimal sleep.Omega Sektor was one of the best weekends I can remember. Exhausting (I, like Gangrel, was an unpaid and sweaty gopher) but well worth all the effort. The meal with you in the Jewelry Quarter was a highlight. As was Rockjaw's Pizza and Condorman party.
Hey, the Brighton Leaving party was fun as well (although sad)
Make sure you stick your head around the corner at Global Gaming next weekend. There will be CoX players there, and it would be nice to kick back.

Quote:Slight correction... Destination Games *was* NC Austin at the same time as being Destination Games...Tabula Rasa was developed by Destination Games. Destination Games became NC Austin. NC Austin still exists.
It just depends on how you view it.
Destination Games gets founded, got into talks with NCsoft to set up a subsidery of NCsoft in America (NC Interactive, based in Austin). As NC Austin it was responsible for the Lineage series in the American market, and also did Dungeon Runners.
As Destination Games it developed Tabula Rasa. When TR closed down, Destination Games was closed down (it is no longer an active studio).
NC Austin is *currently* not doing any development work (AFAIK) and is instead in the support area of the company.
This is going from memory, wiki put together and a lack of sleep. There may be mistakes... i don't think there are, but I could well be wrong. As i stated up at the top of my post, it more than likely depends on what point of view you are going to take. -
Quote:I am surprised that you were willing to try it just purely on NCsoft merits, especially when they have closed 4 games that they released in the Western Market.I refuse to pay money, i was gonna try GW2 on NC softs merit alone, that merit is now gone, i have no respect for the company until they turn this around or otherwise make it possible for the devs to split off from the company and maintain the game by selling them the IP.
End of
Surely, if you were going to try it, it should have been on GW/Arenanet merits... -
Quote:Games that NCsoft have dropped over the years (in rough chronological order):NC Soft has never before reported a quarterly loss.
And what seven small studios have they axed?
1) Auto Assault
2) Tabula Rasa
3) Dungeon Runners
4) Exteel
Auto Assault: Lack of subscribers/profitability. Netdevil wanted to buy back the IP for Auto Assault... NCsoft were asking for more than Netdevil were prepared to pay.
Destination Games closed at the same time as TR went under... lack of subscribers was main reason for the closure of the game (less than 25K at time of announcement according to financial reports). Business politics were also kicking around at the same time as well
Dungeon Runners... just not profitable from the get go according to a developer. PS3 port and other platforms in development cancelled as well at the same time. It had already been cut down in terms of development staff until it was quite literally a few developers and the janitor keeping it up.
Exteel... once again, lack of *stable* money coming in and a declining player base. -
1800 on my 1st 50... cant check the others as they are locked out due to lack of VIPness....

Quote:Considering that there is no real information on how it will play out (apart from that it will be similar to Ultima Online,) in that players will take up positions of power running cities... but apart from that, actual hard facts of the game are few and far between.Last I heard the WoD MMO is being made by the EVE Online people. Y'know, Speadsheets in Space? I've heard absolutely dreadful things about how it's going to be so PVP centric and based on buying-your-way-into-power-with-real-moneez gameplay. As it stands, wouldn't touch that game if they paid me.
And to be honest, it does make sense to run the game world like Ultima Online, and not like City of Heroes.. especially as it *is* based on a game where player/player interaction is *very* important (unless you go for the hack/slash style of the tabletop... valid, but different).
Especially seeing as they also slashed the development team of the game to refocus themselves on Eve Online and Dust 514. -
If he sparkles it is because he is a fairy. Vampires dont sparkle. Pixies and fairies do....

Quote:I heard rumblings a few years ago that NCsoft were at least *planning* to do something similar to the SOE Stationpass... so whilst you might not necessarily stick with one game, you at least got access to the *other* MMO's coming from that publisher.Well. They wont get those 60k. They'll be lucky to get a quarter of them, which is still a significant amount. The reason being the fact they pulled this out of nowhere So they could push us into their new games. Not everybody is a sheep.
Thus beginning the decline of their other games.
At that point in time, it made sense. You had Dungeon Runners, Lineage 2, City of Heroes and Tabula Rasa as subscription based games.
That plan never came to fruition though.
Strangely enough, i went from City of Heroes to Auto Assault, back to CoX briefly, then to TR, then back to CoX... if i had boycotted NCsoft as a result of the closure of Auto Assault... yeah. And i do know players went from Auto Assault to Tabula Rasa because of the free codes that they gave out as compensation... and stayed for the full duration of the 2nd game -
Quote:THat is my thinking as well... that NCsoft are planning to pull out of the western market *directly* and instead start getting the Eastern MMO's that they have done licensed over here (like they have now down with Aion in Europe with Gametap).sigh
Okay, I think we can all agree that the vast majority of players in this game are from the North American (aka Western Hemisphere) and Europe. The Q2 earnings from these two regions is 6482 million KW or 5% of NCSoft's earnings excluding royalty income. CoH earnings was 2855 million KW. If nearly all of CoH income comes from the NA and EU regions then CoH represents 44% of the income from these regions.
Yes the game is a small fish when compared to their hugely successful games in Asia (Korea, Japan and Taiwan represent 95% of their income base) but we are a big chunk in our neck of the woods. Now perhaps NCSoft is looking at withdrawing development support from the NA and EU regions now that GW2 is done since all the one time sales of that game will bolster the income from NA and EU regions for sure in Q4.
Their major MMOs from Asia obviously aren't hitting it off here that well. Maybe they decided they simply don't grok us and write the region off, just cash in on the GW2 sales for the short term, maybe finance an expansion pack or two if sales of the core game continues strong, but if I worked for ArenaNet, I'll be worry that their owners won't be interested in another costly multiyear development cycle for a GW3.
And depending how far along Wildstar is coming along (as well as whether or not they think it'll play in Asia), they may go all Studio 38 on them as well. -
Quote:and the same could be extended for those who were by saving themselves money by buying multi-month subscription deals....sure, it was only a few dollars or pounds you were saving...Unfair? Perhaps. But also true. If you're not supporting with either market purchases or subscription fees, then you're contributing to the reasons for cancellation.
/sarcasm -
Quote:I actually have a video somewhere of me taking advantage of the XP booster, red weapons/armour and doing the 1-50 run in just over an hour. Judicial usage of knowing which zones to go to helped a *great* deal in that one. When NCSoft killed off the sci-fi MMO Tabula Rasa, the devs added special high-powered gear to the game and boosters that allowed for greatly accelerated levelling. The idea was not to just click their fingers and "godmode" everyone to max level who wasn't already max level, but rather to still preserve a sense of gameplay in the short time that remained for the servers.
Quote:At the same time, they also paid homage to the player community by naming the newly added weapons after some of the most active community players!
Quote:Upshot was that by the time of the server shutdown, and the big shutdown event the devs had planned, many players had been able to experience content that would otherwise have taken them many months - different classes, zones, strategies, bosses, instances...you get the idea.
Quote:Opening up VIP to all players in CoH would achieve the same thing, without question. Players who've so far only been able to get a taste of the full content of CoH would then be able to at least see the world they'd otherwise have missed, before it goes boom.
The more people can see the entirety of this great game, the better. I want memories of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles seared into the minds of every player. It would also allow those of us with subs to share our experiences ingame with the newly elevated F2P players, and every story told, every experience shared, is one that will live on.
Opening up VIP to all would achieve all of this - the idea gets my vote!
