Anyway, the last bunch of MMO releases have been followed by drops in their parent companies' stock prices. There's a reason why "buy the rumor; sell the news" is a Wall Street aphorism.
And also Blade and Soul was released on the *very final day* of Q2 for their financial reports, so more than likely they just rolled that over.

Errrm, I am trying to find out where you are getting the "Billions of dollars though". Billions of Won, yes, but that does not equal billions of Dollars though.

Yes, their *net profit* decreased, (which is what the article was referring to in the image there), but it increased in 2007, down in 2008, increased by almost 400% in 2009, dropped by about $10million in 2010, dropped by a further $50mill in 2011 (and yet it is *Still* earning about $115mill profit for the financial year). But it *never* hit negative for *any* single quarter that I have listed so far

So far for Q1 2012, it was a large drop, as in *really* large, yet Q2 of 2012 was at not of large drop as expected.

So, where did the *billions of dollars* come from? Or are just thinking that because profits *drop* for any reason whatsoever, that is always the head honcho to blame?

Speaking of which, both of you have gone out of your way to spew frothy negativity in defense of NCsoft across various threads... Are you being paid to do so or do you answer to NCsoft directly?
No, but if you are calling me "negative" for trying to get things correct, to prevent facts from being blown out of proportion (sorry, I cannot try to change opinions no matter how much I try), then yes, I am on their payroll....

    I wish.

I currently earn £55/week as a full time carer. Hell, I could go out and "actively look for work" and get paid more, but instead I have decided to stay at home and actually *save* my government money. I don't have much of a social life, if any. And neither does my partner (who I care for).

Hell, if we *really* want everything to be blown out of proportion then why don't you just go and say that NCsoft drinks the blood of babies, and kicks a puppy everytime someone cries.

That would make about as much sense as you sometimes.

Ok, going from just the Q4 PDF of each year. I am using the same sources as some people (not necessarily you, but others) have used as an argument for how the loss of $7million (ish) for Q2.
    • Auto Assault: NCsoft were profitable through all of 2007
    • Dungeon runners: NCsoft were profitable all through 2009
    • Dragonica: Still up and running at least in the western market (Dragonica for EU, Dragon Saga for US). You are correct in that NCsoft closed down their Korean server for it, but it is back up under Gravity Corporation. Make of that what you will.
    • Exteel: NCsoft were profitable all though 2010
    • Point Blank: NCsoft closed the Korean server for it (the region they held the license for). Once again, NCsoft were profitable all through 2011 (although it was an up and down year for them).
    • Tabula Rasa: NCsoft were profitable through all of 2008 (actually more so at the end of the year, than the previous 2 quarters).

Regardless, let the media ask NCsoft why they've dropped 7 titles in 5 years, lost billions of dollars but Mr. Kim and his wife Dr. Yoon still keep making millions of personal dollars while they're on the executive board (even when the company is in the red). That smacks of insider trading (amongst other things) but again let's have the media ask those questions for us...
    They lost *billions of dollars*?

Can you please site your sources for this.

In *every single quarter* from at least 2007 up till Q1 of 2012, they have made a profit.

So, how can they *lose* billions of dollars?

Note: The case was over him being fired/leaving voluntarily.

    That I do not dispute.

What I am disputing is that Tabula Rasa was being closed down to get rid of him.

Whilst I was at the Omega Sektor event in the UK, I spoke with Kerensky, who was the German CM for the game. To put it bluntly, even in *EASTER* of 2008, it was on shaky ground, and that to basically keep the game alive, every single subscriber would have to recruit 10 full time players to the game.

THAT number of players (and revenue) would have kept the game alive.

    *shrugs*

Of course, the whole management rearrangement of NC Interactive was interesting, and removing RG from his position (as well as his brother) was the aim it looks like.

side note: And when the rearrangement came in, a year later a whole load of Europeans were fired. Guess what. It was *Americans* who made the call.

    *slow clap*

    Not going to deny that.

But just like Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa was just not bringing in the readies. Infact, it was bringing in *less* money (excluding its opening quarter) than what Guild Wars was bringing up till Q1 2012.

Yep, a *subscription* MMO, that had just launched (with a box cost), was bringing in *less* than what Guild Wars (a buy to play game)

So yes, I am also inclined to believe that there were *serious* financial problems with it (side note: It also brought in less money than CoX has since the launch of freedom)

No idea whatsover. However, i feel that their rating system is flawed, biased, and there have been occurances in the past where a companies rating has been upgraded due to paying a membership fee.

There have also been cases of where a companies rating has been *downgraded* due to discontinuing their membership fee.

Side note: You are not required to be a member to get a rating.

Also, it isnt affiliated with any government agencies, so there is no actual "standard" for it to stick to, apart from the one that it comes up with.
  8. 1) Yes, there has been a decline recently (from a high in October 2011), but then it is also far higher than it was 2 years ago (it is roughly equivalent to its level Jan 2011). Source: Reuters: 5 year view *edit* You actually need to click the 5Y button to get the view up, i forgot about my cookies keeping it in that view

    2) One quarter of loss in profits, which they have attributed to a One off labor cost. Strangely enough, their *revenues* via game sales/micro transactions has increased from Q1, although it *is* lower Year on Year (for Q2 2012). Source: Same as yours.

    3) Not going to touch this one

    4) Yes, they have closed MMO's in the past (or shut down servers for a region...

    5) *edit* As this is now fixed I will now comment. Date of article is 2007, mentions his wife in it for all of 2 paragraphs in it. (Article is titled "NCsoft CEO stands at cross roads". It is more about the misfortunes of stock decline, decreasing revenues *at that point in time*). She was already an outside director of the board *before* the marriage.

    6) The "Scandels"... if you had read them correctly (or knew more about them) you would have at least picked *just* the RG one.

6:i) Stolen Source Code: Well, this wasnt a controvosy on NCsoft's part. The thieves were convicted of this crime
    Quote:
On Dec. 23, Seoul Central District Court handed down the same sentence pronounced at first instance on the vice development director of Bluehole Studio - Mr. Park who had tried to disclose Lineage 3's business secrets to a famous Japanese game company during his tenure in NCsoft. Specifically, Mr. Park was sentenced to a fixed-term imprisonment of one and a half years with a 2-year suspension of execution, and Mr. Bae was sentenced to an 8-month imprisonment with a 2-year suspension of execution. But Mr. Yo and Mr. Kang were punished more heavily with a fine of 10 million Wons instead of 7 million Wons decided at fist instance.
The judge at second instance expressed that Lineage 3 undergoing years of development was a valuable asset possessed by NCsoft, so the verdict of innocence was hard to be rendered. But in view of the defendants' repentance, the 2-year suspension of execution was maintained as well.
    Source: news.mmosite.com

6:ii) the whole worlds.com incident. Should have read this one properly instead of actually just flinging it out there. I actually followed this when it kicked up because I realised *how* badly it could have affected the MMO world if Worlds.com had won. (long story short: There would have been no MMO's as we understand it, nor multiplayer FPS games as an extension).

Yeah, it was that wide ranging.

*side note* City of Heroes was also cited in that court case.

Source: Google Patent page Massively starting coverage of said lawsuit. NCSoft and World.com settle.

Side note: If World.com *did* manage to beat NCsoft in this one, Blizzard, Linden Labs and pretty much all other MMO companies would have been sued or forced to pay royalties.

The general opinion on the street about it (from professional developers and the like) was "What a load of bull-excrement that it was valid".

6:iii) The RG one, I will let you have. Lots of backstage maneuvers and politics on this one from my point of view anyways.

Well, to be fair, Guild Wars *didn't* have subscriptions to start off with, so it would make little (if any) sense to transfer them over to that scheme.

Also, Lineage 2 and Aion are "NCsoft" titles (as in, developed by NCsoft) whilst Guild Wars and City Of heroes were not.

The 2nd point is probably the most important part overall.

Looking at the last financials, it has brought in about 1/2 the *revenue* of CoX so far this year.

However, it has made more than CoX in its lifespan.

Also, due to how they have GW2 set up, you could well be seeing more GW1 sales from people who down own it, to unlock stuff in your hall of monuments in GW2.

How long will GW1 stay up for? Who knows, but I believe it would take the total failure of GW2 AND GW1 before GW1 goes down (or at least another 12 months ish)

So an easy question to test... DO you see leaves sit on the ground after they fall? I cranked up the particle physics to max (didn't even know there was a higher setting before) and it didn't fix the problem. So if you stand under a tree and the leaves collect on the ground (instead of falling through) then there is something very odd going on here. Kinda a pointless issue in the middle of sunset, but still, that would have me very perplexed.
    Yes and no.

Yes, I can make leaves fall and interact with them on the ground. I can still do this with *some* of the leaves that land on the ground. It appears to be dependent on how much they break the ground level by.

If they land fairly vertically, I am able to play around with them (as far as i can test). If they land flat and then disappear... *possibly* depends as to how fast i get to them.

What i have noticed though is that the NPC's are no longer dying *on* the floor, but instead are about 2inches below it. This means that if they end up laying flat, they "disappear", so you will need a Singularity or something similar to pick them up.

Well, compared to at launch, 1-50 in 2 weeks of casual play is *far* faster than I experienced at launch. Then again, I am not the fastest leveller in the world, but I have noticed that many games over the years have smoothed/sped up the levelling curve over the years.

Although you say it is a generic term, and I do not dispute that, I would go further and say that in the UK (where I live), if you say Kebab, 90% of people will think of Donar kebab (especially after a night of drinking/partying)

Depends on where you are from and what you are referring to actually.

If you are referring the "meat in flat bread" thingy (also known as a donar kebab in the UK), then it is pronounced as "Heero" (parts of the US, some other parts of the world) if i remember correctly.

However, I first of all thought that it was referring to Gyro's (as in Gryoscopes) initially, and even now, after it was pointed out to me, i *still* think of Gyroscopes/mechanical parts instead of the meat foodstuff.

Yeah, some jokes just don't work world wide.. or even some parts of the US to other parts of the US.

  24. All of the GM's that i have met over the years in the game (and other NCsoft titles) have been pretty decent.

The email support, that can need work on in terms of making the responses more "human"... but they still get the job done overall (for me at least).

    So thanks in particular to:

The EU GM who gave the Union server moral support the 1st time Hamidon went down (GM_Charles i think, although i seem to believe that he thought that we didnt have enough players to do it (this was back in 2005)).

GM_ROFL (US), who showed up in Tabula Rasa with the most *garish* clown outfit possible (left NCsoft to do something with photography I belive).

And to GM_Vagabond (US), who used to like dropping Thrax mobs on my head, insta-kill me if i spoke in General chat and generally messing around with me (once again in Tabula Rasa).

You 3 all showed me that the GM's like to have fun with their players, and have a passion for the games that they support.

So hats off to the GM's in general for doing a job where players only get in contact with you when stuff has gone wrong and people need someone to vent at.
