I can certainly understand this feeling but I don't think it's ever going to harm reputations or future sales.

Those thousands of dollars have been spent on the hours of entertainment you've enjoyed over the years, more recently enhanced by virtual items from the Paragon Market. It's pretty much the same as spending money watching movies at the cinema, afterwards you aren't left with anything other than memories (perhaps some 3D glasses these days!)

Aside from the initial box sale nobody has spent any money on anything tangible, just the ability to access the game and use certain items from the store for a time.

Sadly I don't think that's true, they've already had massive success with Guild Wars 2 since the announcement and it's just passed two million box sales, likely to go far higher due to it's 'buy to play' nature.

I'm a little uncomfortable with the calls to boycott NCSoft games, which although understandable runs the risk of hurting other development studios who are just as good as Paragon. It's running too close to pure spite, kind of a "if I can't have my toys then NOBODY can" and that just feels wrong.

On top of that the OPs suggestion is just ridiculous, illegal and certainly not going to do anything for the CoH communities reputation.
  3. CoH revenue has been slowly declining for years and in part that'll be due to people like me. I realise that probably sounds weird, why would anyone admit to that, but I guess I represent a silent percentage of the player base.

I bought the game at European release and played solidly until a few months after CoV arrived as part of a very active SG coalition. However once people had one or two 50s they tended to lose interest, with nothing compelling to do at max level they were left with alting for replayability. As people began to leave the game, and friends lists became silent, it just started feeling boring.

The weird thing is I kept my subscription for quite a while even though I wasn't playing at all. Eventually though economics caught up and I cancelled. Since then I've regularly come back, but rarely for more than a month at a time. Why? I'm not sure. Since Paragon took over the reigns the game has improved immensely, but something just doesn't grab me long term and my sub inevitably cancels again.

I've been doing this repeatedly for the past 4 years, you'll notice I'm not a VIP at the moment as my most recent subscription literally finished just prior to the announcement.

I'm a fan of the game, I'm definitely a fan of the Dev team - but I've not subscribed as much as I feel I should have - as much as the game has deserved. In effect I've contributed directly to it's downfall in some small way.

    That makes me sad.

    Wow!

197 of 272 and somehow I don't see the queue going down

    Freedom instead?
  5. I met my partner in Paragon City, seven years ago at Talos Island station as I ran back from yet another trip to the hospital (Blaster!)

Unfortunately she rapidly found out I'm not much of an elec/elec blaster in real life, well not unless you count shuffling your feet rapidly across the floor and discharging a wimpy static shock at someone! Still something must have clicked because we're still together today. In fact we're getting married two weeks tomorrow and both can't believe the game that brought us together will be gone a scant few months later

I'm mildly annoyed that I let my VIP status lapse literally just before the announcement, so I could buy Guild Wars 2. The promise I made not to pay for too many games at once really came back to bite me

While I sincerely hope that CoH is saved, we'll both remember this game for the rest of our lives. We found each other on the streets of Paragon, along with a lot of new, lasting, friendships.

Whatever happens I'm keeping the Atlas statue musical jingle (I really don't know what it's actually called!) as my ringtone - it never fails to send shivers down my spine, even today

    Thank you City of Heroes.
  6. Sigh, is this really what the community - both sides of the Atlantic - has come to?

There's nothing wrong with politely asking for a slightly more useful heads up on downtime, scheduled downtime at that. The kind of work which isn't decided on within 12 hours etc.

Everyone hates the community of a certain other virtual world so much, yet sometimes I wonder if they've looked in the mirror.

    Guess not

Ah that's good, never really liked mob waves that could zero in on anything through stealth.
  8. Please would it be possible to have downtime notification threads posted at a slightly friendlier time than the midnight/early hours postings we currently get.

I realise there's the issue of Pacific coast working hours, but putting something up at 18:00 BST the day before would fit perfectly and allow most people, NA/EU/Oceanic to read about it in advance.

Currently it seems that most announcements go up in the middle of the night and it ends up feeling like there's extremely short notice of downtime, because most of Europe is asleep when it's posted and for a good 6 hours or so afterwards.

Obviously this request doesn't apply to unscheduled emergency maintenance, but things like Live server publishes or scheduled maintenance (that which is over and above the usual weekly slot) could go up with a bit more warning.

**Please note: this is not about excessive downtime, this is about the timing of announcement posts**
  9. Waves of enemies again? Hopefully not the 'see through stealth' ambush types?

I think that's key in getting new players to buy into the game, which is what everyone ultimately wants and will help ensure a long future for us all to enjoy. I realise that chat functionality is a relatively small purchase away but if people can't easily communicate they won't 'want' to spend money on the game in the first place.

The single biggest draw of this game is it's community, gating that just doesn't make people want to shell out.

    Catalyst 11.9

    (For the record, I'm on Win7 64bit using a Radeon 5850 1GB)

HOWEVER. The AMD drivers still suffer from another long-standing bug:

This image is cropped and blown up a bit for clarity. Do you see the lines around the tables, chairs, and character model there? Here's another image, in thumb form. Click to see it in full-size:

This is a graphical bug that we'd had for awhile, was fixed at some point, then came back just a couple of months later. This has been a problem in-game for a long while now! The lines are "transparent", and occur in textures that are at least partially transparent themselves. Think of it as sort of a very thin x-ray line that surrounds objects placed in front of partially transparent textures. These pictures are just a couple of examples. Other examples are pretty much every cape in the game, and when things like cobwebs are on-screen.

If I turn antialiasing off, the x-ray lines go away. Alternatively, if I instead turn ambient occlusion off(but leave AA on), they will also go away. I should not have to pick between these two settings. My computer is able to handle both, and I would like to be able to use both without these graphical glitches.

I'm very glad the crashing might have finally been fixed. But there's still more to be done.

    Also, FPARN because I can.
Just adding that I'm seeing this also, running on Win7 64 with a 6870. Running 11.9, uninstalled previous drivers and ran driver sweeper in safe mode before installing.

In all other respects 11.9 works very well.

But buying an item and just deciding you suddenly don't like it? Should have thought of that before you bought it. A deal's a deal.

In other words, a vendor is only responsible for a trade-in or a refund if the vendor is responsible for the problems with the item. If the customer has problems beyond those, especially "I don't like it as much as I thought I would," then that's too bad so sad.
In the UK there are distance selling regulations which basically allow just that. You have 7 days from receipt during which you can return an item, in it's original state (so basically unopened) for ANY reason whatsoever - including "I don't like it."

Additionally there is a provision that clear information about goods or services must be given before purchase.

All this of course isn't likely applicable to virtual items, especially where the transaction actually covers the points purchase and not the powerset. Whether or not you could get your points back is entirely down to NCSoft/Paragon and it's unlikely.

While that's true it does seem a little counter-intuitive for a game with a hybrid payment model that *wants* people to spend money in the store.

It would be good if, much like the various purchasable costume pieces, players could see individual powerset ability numbers prior to purchase. Now I know it can be found online, in game or by asking - but that still feels like needless obfuscation when there's a perfectly serviceable store UI for it.

I like StJ, it's damage feels very middle of the road but it's a FUN set to play - which is all I'm after in a game. Hats off to the animator!

Nothing inherently, but annoyance is very subjective.

However 4:3 is very late 20th century
  15. For me it's the combo system, works well in other games and gives a little more depth to the set.

Although as everyone else has pointed out the animations feel crunchy

Not game breaking and it doesn't negatively impact the ability to create characters and/or costumes. It is however annoying
  17. Suddenly glad I sat on some points last week

However I think the correct way to respond to a meme is with another. Exactly how many people are going to roll StJ characters *if* it goes live later? It's over 9000!

  20. Kinetic Melee/Energy Aura would work and fit within your framework. Your future tech reminds me of 'Biononics' from Peter F. Hamiltons Commonwealth books, internal 'enrichments' which allow their users to generate and manipulate energy fields for protection or offense.

Energy Aura fits well with that, you could spin it out as an internally generated magentic field or go with something more esoteric such as a 'quantum' force field to allow for it's in-game effects against energy etc (which fits with unimaginable future technology!)

    What do I do?!?

Absolutely agree with Maestro, build up your spider karma

Unless a spider is directly noticed by someone who doesn't like them I tend to leave them be, after all they are only an issue if they trigger arachnophobia. Think of all the other smaller creepy crawlies these spiders are keeping in check within your house ecosystem.

Of course if you live somewhere with venomous spiders then it's a different matter and they should be dealt with fittingly (preference would still be catch and release though).

There was a spider in the living room last night, pretty big and it was sat on the wall almost directly above the resident arachnophobe. I didn't say anything and this morning it's vanished once more.

What they don't know, won't hurt them in this case and there's far more spiders about than they realise
  22. There's a red name post by Beaststyle somewhere on the boards about this, it was linked in Virtue help chat when the issue came up but sadly I can't find it now

The way I understood it was they front loaded your first 400 subscription points when the headstart went live. I think the confusion comes about because if your subscription rolled over *before* the headstart began then this would be the points from your next payment, it's not necessarily the 'september' points.
  23. Definitely frustrating, other servers appear to be working fine but Defiant has forgotten how to communicate with the account status confirmation server.

Either that or someone borged the hamster and it's now furiously trying to assimilate Union, which is ignoring it for being out of character
  24. Indeed VIP status isn't registering when playing on Defiant. I noticed when I tried to do the signature arc and it told me to buy the content, after which I realised I couldn't do anything that needed VIP access.

Logged over to Union and everything was working normally, so seems Defiant specific.

    Please fix!
