  1. Stone Melee Tanker (or Brute) and pretend/color the stone as big hunks of Wood, speed-grown to the purpose.
War Mace Tanker (or Brute) can take a wooden club.

Super Strength... why bother with an implement, when you can tear them apart with your bare 'branches'? Same for a Martial Arts Scrapper.

I wonder if the Demon Summoning in GR can be colored? Make them 'wood sprites' you lead in the battle for a green peace.

    Archery for the green Ranger.

You could put the toon on hold until they proliferate Thorny Assault, it seems like a fine fit for Defenders, possibly even Corruptors.

Be creative and you can explain anything! A green Warshade sounds... Hmm! Okay, I'd better quit before my own alt-o-holism kicks in!

  2. Alright, here's a little tale about /Dark. I've had this happen more than once, but the story is indicative.

On a level 13 Dark/Dark Defender, classic mix of teammates - a Tanker, a Scrapper, and a Blaster, we step through the door to find one of those nifty little 'traps' that happen when you're not paying close attention. In front of us is a Boss-spawn, with a full crew of friends, but there is a Bridge above, with another spawn of Lts and minions.

The Tanker and Scrapper charge in, with the Blaster on their tail, and just as things are getting interesting, the spawn Above aggros and starts coming over the edge. I am desperately tossing Heals, while popping my debuffs, but the other three get dead anyway, just as my Darkest Night finally sticks to the boss. Oh, and this is an Offender build, so I didn't have Howling Twilight, yet - I have Dark Blast, Gloom, and Moonbeam though.

So, a Defender, standing alone against a Boss, 2 Lts (left), and some Minions - But I finally have both Tar Patch and Darkest Night deployed and, between the stacking Debuffs in my attacks and Twilight Grasp... I manage to tank and destroy the whole spawn that had killed my friends.
It would have been more fun and less stressful, if I'd had Howling Twilight, but that might have been overkill.

    The group was mightily impressed.

  4. Um, if you need IOs to make it, then it IS 'broken'. I'm not certain that Fire/** or Fire/Fire is 'broken'... There may be situations where it needs a little more support than a Granite Tanker does. Dark/** has a similar problem.

Can you be a little more specific about the situations in which you feel weak?

  7. Hmm, this wouldn't address the 'multi-tanker' issue (I don't actually think that's a huge problem - multiple Tankers means a denser 'aggro wall' between the baddies and the squishies), but I have an idea about Tanker Endurance.

Why not simply make Gauntlet check for the number of enemies that are taunted/aggroed to the Tanker and return an Endurance discount based on that number? If the Tanker has 3-4 enemies on him, then he gains additional efficiency, so that he won't poop-out before he takes them all down. Or, better, for the multi-tanker team, it just checks for how many enemies are in the Tanker's area of influence?
Hmm, except that latter idea wouldn't take into account the bastiches with the Rifles...
And there's still the GM/AV issue...

Frankly, I think that in any case of damage modifiers less than 1, the AT should get an Endurance discount in scale with their reduced damage. Tankers and Defenders (for instance) would then have more endurance available for their Primary powers... well, or for more applications of their Secondary powers.

I have some questions....what exactly is a splattroller? Thats a new one for me...

Splattroller is a term that I believe Enantiodromos coined - essentially a high-damage and AoE controller. It may be covered in This post: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showf...Number=5642571

Are the TA and Archery sets any good? I have been trying to do some catching up and reading on this set but still a bit uncertain. Even though it appears that lethal attacks are resisted a lot, are the attacks still considered in using?

    [/ QUOTE ]
I'd say Archery is actually quite good, despite damage resistance at higher levels. Trick Arrow is a super utility-belt full of mean tricks. It's particularly useful for my Illusion Controller, since it has Holds that set up Containment.
Only thing you won't get is a 'Healing Arrow'. See Luminara's excellent guides for more info.

Also, what are the best villains? I love running in teams. I have tickered with MM's and I loved it but I thought since they are so much fun that therer would be a lot of MM's around. 9. I could understand the Effects of these toggles suppressing while mezzed, but I surely Hate being detoggled and then having to wait several seconds (for some powers) before I can toggle them back on. And it seems to take forever to get them all back online.

On the other hand, 'detoggling' is basically an effect/tactic of Longstanding history in the game. Detoggling your enemy makes them easier to defeat, whether they're PC or NPC. Several of the NPC will Self-detoggle regularly and this makes them possible to beat.

I wish it didn't happen to Me, but when the evil sorcerer turns off his Hurricane is when I rush in and beat the snot out of him... so...

  10. One quick question, please. Is this a high-level respec build, or are you looking for a leveling build? No, I take that back - this is clearly a Respec build, it doesn't have the necessary tools for lower-level success.

I would de-prioritize Boxing and Resist Elements, picking up Blinding Feint, Unyielding and Super Jump earlier. If you're really willing to hold off on Stamina until level 24, then there are Lots of things that can be given priority, otherwise the whole Fitness pool can drop into higher-priority slots.

With Tough at 26, you don't 'need' Boxing until 24 and I would switch priorities between Resist Elements and Resist Energies. Having ResEn before 30 will bring it up just in time to help with Carnies and Malta.

This list represents my own plans and a Leveling build, but you could use it as a basis for creating your Respec build, simply by switching out Power Slice and Nimble Slash.

Both anthropomorphic alien races that share significant traits with animals, and what we would now call genetically-engineered human/animal hybrids, have been a mainstay of English-language science fiction for rather longer than "anime" has been a phenomena. To pull one major serious classic out, I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Ballad of Lost C'Mell (1962) yet. Another widely-read case would be many of the works of Andre Norton, featuring a full spectrum of normal but skilled cats, telepathic cats, cat-like aliens, cat/human hybrids, and so on.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I salute you, for mentioning C'Mell! Unfortunately, you missed a detail. Cordwainer Smith, the author, is a pseudonym for Paul Linebarger, who was an expert on Oriental culture. In fact all of the stories in his Instrumentality of Man books draw heavily from Oriental culture and mythology, and the society of the Instrumentality is very... Japanese.

Not that I dispute your analysis, the 'Cat-like Girl-like Cat' is not exclusive to eastern cultures.

In the build Heraclea posted, 5 powers came from her Secondary and only 4 from her Primary. Of those 5 secondary powers, 2 have no benefits for Her own character. Her other powers were for Travel and QoL.

What she didn't have were the powers that make Fire Control potent in doing damage and 'locking down' enemies. And she specifically mentioned being pushed to make power-choices based on their utility for 'the team', rather than for her own enjoyment. Therefore, I suggested that she explore these more aggressive possibilities and strike her own balance. I'm Not suggesting she ignore her secondary.

I have often run my Controller at 'Scrapper Speed', firing off (and stacking) controls as fast as they cycle and a Controller can be very powerful that way, though it burns through Endurance at a fantastic pace. You can juggle several targets that way, even with just single-target holds. However, if you only have a few holds, you're not going to be able to lock even one tough target down - at which point you'd best hope your team is good, because You are likely to face-plant, alone.

That's been My experience and not meant to define yours, or Heraclea's. However, if she's been experiencing difficulties and is unsatisfied with her Controller, _I_ suspect it's because she's been trying to be a Defender/Buffer and not a Controller.

I think, if you want to keep the character and enjoy it, you should use your second build to create a more solo-focused toon, a 'real Controller' instead of a Kinetics-bot. Play that for a bit and then use that experience to decide how much to tell those Buff-bot wanting teammates to go jump in the Hollows.

A Controller should be about their Primary, not a gimped version of a Defender. And you should play a character so that You are having fun, rather than being a slave to the desires of your teammates.

  14. The main problem here, is that both WP and DB are very tight, you basically 'need' almost all of the powers.

Dual Blades is Endurance-light on each individual attack, but also damage-light. It makes up for this, by being Very fast acting. In addition, DB depends on the Combos for mitigation, so you need to chain multiple attacks together at Speed - which actually adds up your damage fairly well, and drains your End.

Willpower is basically a 'Regeneration Tanker' power. You have no self-heals and you're not as bullet-proof as other Tanker sets, but you recover from damage quickly and have Huge amounts of HPs. Also, your 'taunt aura' is relatively weak at holding aggro, compared to other tanker powers. This can be balanced with the sheer number and speed of your attacks, spreading Gauntlet all over.

All of that said, I've got mine to L23 and Love it!
    Here's how I'm built.

  16. Okay, I have two comments, based on my experience with Dual Blades and Invulnerability.

There is nothing in DB that truly benefits from Hasten - Unless you are building an AV soloing machine, where you absolutely Must have the maximum DPS. In that case, you'll be spamming a single attack-chain, rather than taking full advantage of all of the combos in Dual Blades. And that's not a Leveling build, but a maximized L50 Respec Rebuild.
In Invulnerability, Hasten Could assist you in building a 'Perma Dull Pain' build - Again, unnecessary, unless you're planning to solo-grind AVs. And then there's Unstoppable, with its mighty crash, but, if you can survive the crash, then having it available to go up again is Super. However, again, that's a Respec build and not one that is fun for leveling up in the first place.

Resistance to Energies is going to do you more good than Resistance to Elements. Makes those sappers hurt a little less.

Unless you plan to be a pseudo-Tanker, there is no need for Fighting, either. Invulnerability is the single Toughest Scrapper Secondary available.

I see you have Super Speed, with a Stealth proc. If you have any of the Prestige Sprints, it's simply better to choose one of those for movement and put the Stealth in Sprint. Then you can toggle Stealth on and off, when you Need it and choose your movement powers at will. Super Speed is still a good one! and, with that and the Stealth in Sprint, you'll be fast(er) and nigh-invisible.
In which case, Hasten is fine, but you won't need it available all the time, so you can save some slots.
Otherwise, Combat Jumping and Super Jumping make a good combo.

My only other comment is that you really should take the DB attacks approximately in the order they are offered. Blinding Feint shouldn't wait until your 40s.

Just for comparison, this is how I'd build this Set.

As always, your milage may vary and this build-out may not suit your concept or playstyle.

Dual Blades is a fast-attack set and not a 'big orange numbers' one. It gets it's DPS through having Many fast attacks and through the special bonuses activated by the combos - For that reason, it's a 'tight' build that you can't really skip a power from, almost at random, like you can with other sets. The one exception is Confront, of course, and you don't 'need' Power Slice until the 30s, which is why I moved it, in my build.

  17. I know it's been mentioned before - I did it myself, but that post has gone to the great chatlog in the sky. So, I reiterate...

I have characters on all servers. Okay, I have LOTS of characters on all of the (US) servers. I also belong to several global chat channels and I identify myself using chat variables like $name, $level, $archetype...

Unfortunately, there is no $server variable, so I have to add that by hand to each chat-channel macro. Worse, I have to change it for each character on a different server.

Please, Devs, can we have a $server chat variable?

  18. It does seem ludicrous that the Police Radio can tell you that the detective wants to talk, but not actually connect you with the detective in question.
On the other hand, the villain's Newspaper is also unable to actually connect you with the Broker, so that's 'fair'.
Neither Detectives, nor Brokers give out their cell-numbers - annoying, but fair.
All Brokers (that I've run across) are outdoors and do not require you to run a maze inside the building, to reach - like Detectives. I concede that this is an annoyance and a QoL issue.

    WP/DB build?

Actually, that would be an unfair comparison, as Invulnerability's aggro-aura (Invincibility) is about twice as effective (at holding aggro) as Rise to the Challenge. I'm hoping and praying that the Devs will relant, and let RttC Taunt.

    WP/DB build?

Because Dual Blades relies on Combos for its mitigation effects, you cannot neglect any. This build has all of the powers needed for the first combo, but if Nimble Slash is not used and doesn't hit, you'll never see it.

Here is how I am building my WP/DP:

This incorporates Heraclea's advice on the order in which you pick Willpower's abilities. However, this build IS very light on Taunt. It's clearly a scrapper-tank build and not one for holding aggro on large teams, so feel free to ridicule me unmercifully and call me a noob, but I've been extremely pleased Playing this build, for the last 10 levels - I'm up to level 25 now.
I may find, as I level, that this build is just too squishy and be forced to integrate Kick/Tough/Weave. I may find that not having Taunt is just too much handicap with larger/tougher spawns at higher levels. It's a work in progress.

By the way, I've utilized this Willpower structure on other tanker toons and find it works just fine for leveling up - so that part seems validated.

  22. I don't want to rain on any parades, because this has been a fine issue, but some editorial spell-checking might have been useful - if the Writers can't provide it, then the Editors must.

And, I know it's gained 'cultural' traction among us, but what the heck is with this 'butt-capes' fixation? They are Coat Tails! You don't see kids tying a towel to the waist and 'zooming' around with their dramatic 'butt-capes'! Capes are for the neck/shoulders.
I can just see the cover now... Superman and Batman, striking dramatic poses, capes streaming dramatically in the dramatic wind, billowing out from their... butts? Manic Laughter ensues.

And we have two versions of your silly 'butt-capes' already, in Trenchcoats and the Tail-coats in the Wedding Pack.
That said, more styles of coats with tails might be nice.

Grf, I don't know why I bother, this really should be posted in the Costumes section, not as a comment on the City Scoop - great publication, I read it every issue! Thanks, folks, keep up the good work!

  23. Hey, that's not my fault, you crazy Scrapper! Honestly, I'm usually trying to get him to Slow Down!

Seriously, though, the Devs rarely give us 'useless' tools. If you look at all of the things that a power does, you may be surprised at the usefulness.
Soloing, Rain of Fire lets me pretend to be a Blapper and dash in to lay some heavy damage on a bad guy. Or I can drop it at my feet and laugh, as they all run AWAY from me, instead of beating my brains in. Drop it in a room or the end of a corridor, and watch the mobs scurry around (slowly) looking for an exit, while you fry them one at a time.
Being a Blaster doesn't only mean DPS or damage on target - yes, that's a Blaster's biggest thing, but we ALSO use Distance and Time to make our damage count. Blasting gives us Distance (as does running away, or clever pulling tricks), Distance gives us Time, Time means that we can lay down the damage and 'arrest' mobs before they have a chance to squish us.

It may be Blaster Blasphemy, but Sometimes 'Fireball' is not the best answer.

Agreed re: RoF, which is why I only picked it up for massive invasion-like events (or the MS raid). It definitely has more uses at 50 than getting there, and if you're running a lean, mean, high-DPS team, RoF will rarely get used. Hell, sometimes I don't even bother w/Fire Breath, cuz by the time it finishes animating, there's nothing for me to throw my Fire Ball at.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I disagree, because you won't always be on a 'lean, mean, DPS team'. If you run at higher difficulties than Heroic, then you tend to encounter larger groups of Minions to fry. If you're on an Indoor mission, like most low-mid level missions, then the walls help contain the baddies and they stay in the fire.
If you're solo, then RoF gives you time to put some serious heat on the threats. It's More useful before you've got your fireball 5-slotted and can wipe out the whole spawn with a few shots. I like it. I take it. I use it.
I also tend to play a more defensive game than some. If you're successful with a more aggressive style of play, consistently get on larger teams, or get PL'ed past the 'lowbie levels', then more power to you. I don't, so I take my tools and use them.
