Hmmm, seems like a fun combo.

Cant says id know how itll work together, but I do have experiance with both sets.

Ill just say this much, because theres too much to write.

Get Scorpions Shield and some possitional Defense, and itll be able to farm, otherwise...dont even bother. Some of the KB will cause issues.

Thats debatable, and I cant answer how it will do in PvP, mainly because im building Defenders for PvP, and really havnt given much thought to any of my melees going into PvP.

So my answer is, I simply dont know.

Dont knock it till you try it, because you have no idea until you do.

    BS/Regen or /WP

Personally, id go with Shield, or Super Reflexes.

Cant go wrong with Additional Damage and a Extra Alpha AoE with Shield, and SR helps up damage a little by granting Quickness, for a +20% Recharge Redux bonus to all attacks and powers.

That, and the fact of your already slow, why put up with re-draw using Regen?

He has a grudge on me because I claimed that getting Hasten up after a 10 second break was possible on a Radiant Aura Character, and I called it Perma.

  7. This makes me want to make another FA/ Character.

Iv done FA/SS, FA/FM, BS/FA, Claws/FA, MA/FA, and none of them where bad at all.I only used FA for Tankers and Scrappers, but now I have 1 Brute with it right now as well.

I guess im just the weird one who does exceedingly well on Resistance builds.

    Sonic/Sonic

It looks like your trying to make the best Defender Possible, and if thats your goal, which seems to be what it is from what im reading from you, then your going about it the wrong way.

Theres plenty of other Primaries that will offer you greater achivements in later levels of the game.

My advice to you is, make it, play it, and if you dont like it, make another.

I can answer this one off the top of my head for you, because its a no brainer, and a Attack Calculator isnt needed to answer this.

If your wanting to Solo Avs and GMs, your best bet is Dark Blasts. It will stack with the already annoyingly powerful -toHit from one of your Ancors, capping your Defense agenst that AV or GM after you nail it a few times with your blasts.

I speak about Dark Blasts from Experiance on my Dark/Dark Defender.Who can already at level 36, Solo a AV, without Inspires, or Vet Powers.

The Attack Chain is simple when I use it on a AV, and its very quick, easy, and damaging.

I use 4 attacks mainly. All of Which have 1-3 Endurance Redux SOs in them for longjevity in the fight. They are.

Dark Blast, Gloom, Siphon Life, and Moonbeam.Dark Blast and Gloom both have just 1 End Redux SO in them, because they barly take any End to use, I have 2 in Siphon Life, because I went for more Heal and Accuracy vs Damage to have a fast heal in case Twighlight Grasp would be to slow.Moonbeam, I wasnt Interupted a single time using this Snipe, and it worked its way into my attack chain nicely when all 3 of the others where down, and took a decent chunk of damage every time.It was SOd with 3 End Redux and 3 Damage.

The Chain for me incorpirated my Dark Primary, so it may or may not help you on your build, even though there are simularities between your Primary, and my own, but the Attack chain for the Blasts was pretty much the following.

Dark Blast, Gloom, Dark Blast, Siphon Life, Moonbeam, back to back.It was enough to make the AVs Health bar dissapear fast enough for my tastes.

I however also used my Dark Servant, and spammed my hold inbetween my Attack Chain so that it would stack with my Servants. My Servant also did its part by debuffing its toHit, so I didnt need my Ancor, or my Shadow Fall after the opening Alpha, and it did most of my Healing for me, so that was a huge savings on Endurance.

Getting the Regen down on the AV wasnt a issue either, because Twilights Grasp, for my self, and my Servant dropped it for a time.

So if your stuck on using Radiation Aura Secondary, then id go Dark Blasts.

Now, it's quite true that one of its strong benefits is its -toHit (and/or its Fear), and those only work against a single target. One of the reasons to mix it with a defense set is not the -toHit, but the self heal. This is why my suggestion was for a defense set with the Fighting pool, softcapped with additional IOs. DM is there for the self-heal.

Remember, "impossible to kill" is a very broad statement, and I interpreted it as being good both in a pile of foes and faced with one big foe. DM isn't especially top-rated at killing a pile of foes, but it's going to help a soft-capped character with good L/S resists and good DDR be very hard to kill as long as it can land its heal on the enemy.
Good point, my Dark/Dark Defender can rip a Big Bad solo Boss apart, as well as can the rest of my builds iv mentioned. The Heal doesnt seem to make the DM set shine to me for a melee character, it is nice to have a heal going off in your attack chain, but not really from my experiance as much help in heavy mob situations, and certainly not much help for a Regen because Regen its self is a massive Multi-Heal Armor Set.

My Dark/Dark gets Soft-Cap Defense just by hitting his enemies, and can hold a Big Bad with spamming his Fearsome Stare, and his Dark Servant fires it off as well.My Cold/Ice can hold a big bad boss due to fast recharging, and enhanced Hold Duration from Freeze Ray, and the Rains, with the addition of KD and -60% Total on damage resistance makes the Alpha on a Mob, the first and last word.

If anything, id say the use of Regen is fine, if you give it something that compliments it better then DM.From my standpoint, for survivability, DM does great adding that heal, for Armor sets that dont get a Heal Clicky in the first place, but I may be able to come up with something you could combo with Regen to make it more favorable for survivability then a redundant healing power.

Thats assuming your dead set on Regen and being a Scrapper. If you are, then it would be best to get a set that offers KD, or KB as a damage Midigator. It works pretty well for my Sonic/Sonic Defender, as well as my Axe/SR Brute.

Side Note : If I end up getting IOs for my Axe/SD Brute, its more then likly going to be just Recovery and Regen, with some Global Recharge thrown into the mix.Axe allows me to keep the mob on its butt for half or more of the fight, so Def %s arnt much of a issue, even on my /SD Defense Brute.

The point of mentioning my Brute, is that if I went with DM, id be far more vulnerable to damage, and id have to really cram the money down his throat to make him survivable.DM's heal isnt always the answer.

If you really wanted added survivability with Regen on a Scrapper, just take Katana, Broad Sword, Electrical Melee, or even Claws. All of these sets offer way more protection through KD and KB then anything you could achive with DM.

Iv had 2 Regen toons in my time playing this game, both in there 40s when I got bored of them. They where DM/Regen, and Claws/Regen.The DM one, iv already mentioned how it could survive small missions, but with my Claws, I could survive full 8 man missions, thanks to the KD and KB of my Tier 9 being on high Recharge and Accuracy.I didnt worry about Damage for that power, I used it as a midigator, and it worked very well.Soloing Bosses was alot easier with Claws then my DM Scrapper was at it, because My regen powers where up fast enough to allow me to tank, and my fast attacks, and KD from Focus made the fights with Big bads a joke.

So I guess im recomending Claws more then the rest.People severly look over sets because of the KD and KB components. When most mobs if you set them to +1 in difficulty, turn most of the KD, into KB from increased resistance to it.

Heck, my Cold/Ice, and Storm/Elec count on KD from there Debuff rain powers to stop all incomming damage, so they can dish it out.
  14. This is what my Fire/Fire Tank does after entering a mob.

Its enough to make you put on shades.
  15. Well, Impossible to Kill doesnt seem like it would be easly achieved on a Scrapper.I may be wrong about that, but I find that Dark melee barly does anything to up survivability when your soloing mobs of 4 - 8 in mob size.I acctually find it amazing so many people flock to the DM set with a Defense set, and find it even odder that they belive it'll do much for a Regen.

While in the past I did roll with a DM/Regen Scrapper, I cant honestly say that it was hard to kill.Even though it could Solo +3 missions set for 1 Person back before they put that option to up the mobs was around. It survived Fine for 1 man solo missions, but much more then that, and I was asking for trouble.

Ill also add that it did fine in Teams because of the mainly ST damage it delt, and then Shadow Maul was good when the Tanker Herded everything. So in a Team Setting, it was rather survivable.Impossible to kill? No.

Out of everything iv played over the years, iv found the hardest to kill types in this game for hero side has a long list of what can be nearly impossible to kill.Ill name off a few, and if by naming these off your confused at why they would be hard to kill, just ask me, ill be happy to exsplain.

These are my personal Characters that I play, and have massive show stopping ability, and can be listed as almost impossible to kill, and every one of them can solo at a rating from +0/8 w/bosses, to +3/8 w/bosses without much difficulty.

    Dark/Dark - Defender
    Storm/Elec - Defender
    Cold/Ice - Defender
    Traps/Rad - Defender
    Fire/Rad - Controller
    Fire/Fire - Tanker

These are the ones on my nearly impossible to kill list, and only 1 of them is a melee character, and these arnt the builds youd exspect to be hard to kill either, but they are.

Its not just Defense, and Regen that rules this game.Theres alot more then that around that can easly be geared for massive destruction, or power that can be used to negate the heavy need for extreemly high defenses to increase your survivability.

I by no means think a DM/SD, or Regen, or whatever is crap, but in the amount of time iv played this game, iv noticed theres alot more then people care to think about using, and while some of it seems more exspensive to IO compaired to Defense sets, theres alot out there worth IOing for things other then Possitional Def %s that could put them over the top for stomping power, or crippling debuffs that will make that character excell.

Well, it makes me want to ask more questions as well.

If i rush in with my Fire/Fire or Elec/Elec Tankers, and I nearly wipe the mob with my opening Alpha before the rest of the team comes in to mop up, is that considered Tanking?

Is it considered Tanking on my Storm/Elec Defender, if I can Freezing Rain a mob, jump in, Lightning Clap them to stun Minions and Lts, then dish out my AoEs that drain there Endurance, then goto town with my ST attacks until my AoEs come back up again?

The shields although a buffing chore, do last 4 minutes and greatly improve a team's survivability.

That said, there's no wrong way to play a set unless you triple slot brawl and kick.
Well, If I have some extra power slots to waste in later levels, ill pick up the shield, but fromt he teams iv been on latly, alot of people acctually thank me for not using the ice shields on them, and are more then happy with my damage and slows, so its kind of a none issue at this point.

As it stands, I plan on attempting to Solo TFs, and AVs with this Defender. It seems very possible at this point.

As for slotting Brawl and Kick, ill do that as soon as they give us the Civilian or Normal Human Arc-Type as a Class.

Also, What would go with a electric (defense wise)

    Thanks!

    @BrenX
I can chirp in on this one.

Theres absolutly nothing wrong with this Scrapper build at all.

If you look at the Teir 9 for your attacks, Lightning Rod, you'll notice that it says at level 50 that its a 200 damage base. With just 3 Damage SOs, it turns into 400, then add in your Build Up.Id be surprised if there was anything of a mob left after a hit like that.

Its a Extreemly powerful build, if you take the right steps building it.

Lightning Field, dont skip this power. After you LR into a Mob, this will hit the mob a few times while you jump in the air to give a finishing blow with Thunder Strike, making sure, they are DoA.

Whats the point of Regen if the mobs dead shortly after the Alpha?By the way yes, I have Elec/Elec Experiance on a Tanker, its my second most damaging Melee toon that I have, besides my Fire/Fire Tanker that can out do its damage.

My highest damage toon with the most survivability is a Cold/Ice Defender though. When it Alpha's a Mob, it Dies.
  19. I had a old Claws/Regen that could handle 8 man mobs, so I dont belive taking Katana, or Dark melee will matter much in the long run.I used KB instead of Divine Avalance, or the -toHit debuffing of DM.

Alot of people tell you to skip your level 32 teir 9 in the Claws set, but Solo, giving it some practice, you can keep a mob on its butt, and Spin them to death.

Theres alot more options that most dont exsplore.

  21. Well, duo with a Stalker you say?

Id go with Energy Armor, and then with either Claws, or Energy Melee. The Armor gives you a Stealth power, and Claws or Energy Melee would be a good Thematic choice when paired with your Stalker friend.

I like your main point, that Defenders can be a lot tougher than many people give them credit for. But why do you need to rag on healing here?

Both the bits I've bolded are totally unnecessary and besides the point here, but get the reader's back up because it sounds like you're telling them, or maybe someone else, they're doing something wrong. Take them out and the post reads a lot better.

Defenders can do way more than take alphas or mash healing buttons, so phrasing it like an either/or in your first sentence is going to rub people the wrong way, isn't it?
While I can respect that its a soft spot to give a snarky comment or 2 towards Healing on Defenders, its also a very soft spot for me to have to baby sit a Defender that takes only Healing powers from the EMP set, and doesnt attack, or take any attacks past his teir 1 power for his build.

I wouldnt be oppossed to making a EMP my self, but I have yet to find a reason to do so, and the fact that I cant find a decent blast set to pair with it other then Ice Blasts, but the problem there, is iv already got a Cold/Ice, and I dont want to re-use a set.

Im running out of Options for builds on Defenders anyhow, so I may end up making a EMP because of that factor, and to be even more honest, I find my self soloing alot more then teaming with all of my characters.

Lets face it, if decent Teams and Players where out there, id happly team as much as possible. However the problem with people exspecting you to do one thing, when you do another is a whole diffrent mess in its self.

In other words, I build my Defenders to mainly solo, and sometimes team, because the statement of "You can heal a wound, but you cant cure stupid." is why I tend to stay away from EMP in general.

When people see a EMP on a team, they commonly do 3 things.

    1) Get upset if you fire off attacks, and not constantly heal there awesomeness, and be there heal bot.Very common, and typical of the Scrapper or Tanker on most PUGs.

    2) The team becomes more reckless, and even Blasters will try to Tank because they belive that its the EMPs job to keep them alive while they do it, and then get upset at the EMP when he cant keep up with the suicidal players demands of him/her self, or the team.People's IQs tend to drop when a EMP joins the team.

    3) Id feel really damn guilty if I was on a EMP, and they recruited a Traps/ Defender that covered the Team way more then my heals could, and then have the team tell me im the assest, and thanks for the heals.Id feel like a complete heel that didnt deserve the praise, while the Traps/ player gets no real credit for very powerfully Defending the team from harm.

This is mainly why I cant, or dont want to like EMPs in this game. The set looks fine to me, and has some great points in its favor, but its abused by alot of bad players that come from other games that give make it have a bad taste in my mouth for it.

Im sure ill love the set once I slap my greasy mits onto it, but as of right now, I have no desire to play it.Because people make it look bad, and most that desire you to use it for mostly just there benifit, make it even more unappealing to play.

Im the guy that played DDO and made a Warforged Wizard with 1 level of Barbarian, and tweeked my stats to accomidate being a battle mage. What did I achieve?I could heal my self, making the need for a healer, Void, I could Tank for my self, as well as fight at the level of a Fighter through my Magic Buffs, making my need for a Fighter also Void.

I could easly grab up a huge mob with my Character, and cast Stone Skin, and Dissplacement, Tank them, and throw a Maxed Fireball, nuking half the map of Baddies, and even take out the Boss at the end of a Mission Solo, and piss off the entire team because I have the capability to do so.

70% of the time I fought a a Melee Combatant with Wizard Buffs, and Solo'd many Story arcs that usually require a full team with a Healer or 2 in tow.Iv also Duo'd several with a friend of mine that I needed for some of these missions, because I had no Lockpicking abilities.Traps didnt kill me, so I never needed him for that.He played a none combatant Rogue, and focused on his Theify abilities, so I did all the fighting.

My point is, I do this with every game I play.Iv never had the "We need a healer and tank!" mantality. So my sore spot is with people who make something more complicated then it needs to be, and thats definatly what I consider Mashing the Heal button to be.

So I apologize if it offends you, but if your not the type of Heal Bot iv decribed, then it shouldnt bother you one bit.If you are, then you still shouldnt be offended, because its your choice and right to play that way, and its my choice and right to cuss about it.

Sleet is, in my opinion, the keystone power of the combination. Not as flashy as benumb, heat loss or the /ice rains, but it's a very nice reliable, strong, every-spawn mitigation and damage boosting power. It's the workhorse that never lets you down.

As an aside, the reason your damage feels so good is that, when they ported /ice to blasters, the devs didn't bother to make new pseudopets for ice storm and blizzard. Thus, these two powers summon the blaster version pseudopets - you are doing *blaster level damage* with ice storm (and, when you get it, blizzard). This is, indeed, as awesome as it sounds, as you have discovered. Not to mention that you get access to damage boosting powers that blasters don't get! Heat loss + Sleet + ice storm + blizzard = mobs? What mobs? And, to boot, if you are in range of enough heat loss buffs, you can even overcome the -recovery penalty of blizzard (fully endmod slotted, 8 will let you recover at somewhat less than your normal rate, 9 will negate the penalty entirely).

The combo does feel somewhat anemic early on, it is true. You don't get the good AoE stuff out of either of your sets until the 20s at the earliest. It does kinda suck having snow storm as your only AoE mitigation tool until 26, especially given the aggro it draws. But when you do get those upper level powers, oh my.

Edit: to give some perspective on how awesome blizzard and ice storm are, at level 50 their unenhanced damage numbers are approximately 501 and 117 damage, respectively. Defender nova, which is a good example of a 'standard' defender nuke, has an average unenhanced level 50 damage of 176. Blizzard does almost *three times as much damage* as a regular defender nuke - in fact, it does more damage than every *blaster* nuke except for itself, including inferno! As a bonus, blizzard also can knock things down while it's running, as well as carrying a 20% tohit debuff.

Meanwhile, ice storm does pretty much exactly 2/3rds as much damage as a regular defender nuke, for about one sixth the endurance and recharge time. The only drawback of these two powers is that they each take 15 seconds to deal their damage, but between their own slow, sleet's slow, sleet's knockdown, and blizzard's knockdown, are the enemies really going anywhere?
You know, I was worried that with the numbers and damage I see my self doing on this build, if they are planning on nerfing the Ice Rain powers of the blast set for Defenders.

I think iv come up with the answer....which would probably be the word "NO".

Heres my understanding of why I belive that.

    1) They never said they would, and if they did, I cant find it.

    2) Blasters and Corruptors get the same damage numbers as the Defenders, but theres a major diffrence in the Damage Scaling for all 3 ATs.Blasters get 165% Damage capability from Dual BUs, and the Corr gets Scourge and Aim, and Debuffs. The Defender its self gets Aim and Debuffs, making it a fact, that the Ice Rain damages are less for it, then the other 2 ATs that have the ability to choose this set.

    3) You have to wait till higher levels to gain any real power with the Ice Blasts set for Defenders, while Blasters and Corruptors get the damaging powers quicker. So its unlikly many people will pick this set for a Defender when making that AT.People want power, and they want it NOW!

    4) If you really think about it, why would they weaken the set for Defenders? When theres other more game breaking sets like Dark Blasts that allow you to Tank 5-6 Mobs as long as you keep firing?

    5) Blasters and Corruptors get more damage out of Rain of Fire with the Fire Blast sets then they do with Ice Storm, and Defenders dont get that set, and cant match its overall damage, even with using Blizzard. Not to mention the Inferno is a Burst Damage Nuke, keeping you from having to wait 15 seconds for the damage to complete.

    6) Tankers can take the Ice Epic and pick up Ice Storm for the same Damage as the Defender. Not only can they do that, but they can be a Fire/Fire Tanker, and use BU and FE to boost the damage to nearly Blaster levels of Damage, making it possible for a Tanker to do more damage with that power then a Defender can.

    7) The Devs would piss off alot of people if they changed it now, when many players like it the way it is, and makes Defenders more fun for experianced players who choose this set.

Im not totally worried about them changing it to be honest, but I do feel guilty being able to make Tanks, and now Defenders that can wipe mobs as if they fire a Death Ray from a Death Star in orbit by remote.

It feels Criminal to have power on a AT everyone says is weak, but it feels soooooo goooood!

Good way of putting it, and im that player that skipped the Frostworks, and the Shield powers, because I commonly Solo more then I team, so those powers do me no real good, and I can focus on my Offensive capabilities even more.
