Well the instability was player induced griefing due to a faulty client (summon vet reward rikti monkey and crash everyone within visual range). Hopefully this will be cleared up shortly.

Memory. Plain and simple. You have too little, the integrated video is stealing some of it and you have a whole lot of stuff running in the background. What happens is the game is liberally using the page file because by itself is using 1GB or so. When you try to bring up the Wentworth's UI the game needs to make room and the drive light stays on as the OS is trying to find enough infrequently used 4KB chunks of real memory, the stuff you don't have a lot of, to swap out to make room. It turns out that all that page swapping causes the game to stop talking back to the server. After two minutes of that the server boots you.
Now there are a few things you can do, annoying as they are.
0) Shut down or exit out as much stuff as possible before starting the game. Save your real memory for the game, not a dozen or so of "helper" apps sitting in your tool tray next to your clock.
1) Use /unloadgfx before clicking on a WW employee. This causes the game to load only the graphic objects and textures in the local area.
2) Shop at a empty WW. I find Kings Row to be a pretty empty place. Why? Because players with their multitude of costume items are a big memory hog.
3) Shop as soon as you start the game and login. I rarely had problems when playing over at my parent's house with their 512MB wonder.
4) Last ditch, exit the game completely while in WW and restart it. This is about as minimal memory usage you will see. Just exiting to the login screen doesn't flush all the resources the game has loaded while you've been playing.
5) The obvious fix but it will cost you some money is to buy more memory. -
Even before I14 and the AE box being in the store or the Game Card at 7-11, Rite Aid and other stores, I noticed a lot of new players since the start of this year. Not sure if it's caused by advertising of the game itself, associated advertising due to all the features written about CO and DCO or cheap game boxes at Big Lots. It could also be churn from other MMOs while players are waiting for new content there.

I think anywhere but in a thread they are being repressed. I believe it's intentional.

Since this appears to be a problem with missing game assets, that is the rikti monkey pet, I'm guessing the build team is going to triple check that all game assets and references pointing to them are correct before they try another rollout.
Someone in build and QA is going to have a bit of explaining to do. -
Quote:This assumes that the e-mail is stored in a central location and accessed from the client. It is possible that the e-mail is stored with each account which would require some task to scrub every account every time someone presses SPAM. Hitting the DB constantly with such a task would probably be bad.I don't want the e-mail system elimated, and I don't want it turnable-offable either. I think the following would help the situation:
1) When a spam account is banned, have it kick off a process that deletes all messages that person has sent from all mailboxes across all servers. I don't see any reason why I see e-mails from "empty" in my mailbox.
Quote:2) When a spam account is banned, have it kick off a process that removes that account from everyone's ignore lists. If they can't log in, there's really no point in them taking up space in my ignore list, is there?
Quote:3) Create a secondary ignore list for spam, a list separate from our regular ignore list. Names added via /ignore go to the to the regular ignore list and don't get removed. Names added via the Spam button go to the spam list and get bumped off as it fills up.
Quote:4) Improve the heuristics that detect what is and isn't spam. Right now, it ain't too good.
Quote:5) Do some due diligence on the back end to keep RMTers from gaining access to the e-mail system. I was under the impression that trial accounts could not send e-mail, but I've heard conflicting reports that there is a way around that limitation. If there is, plug it. If there's not and people are using bogus information to register real accounts, figure out some better way to stop that.
Quote:6) Because it bugs so many people, and because it's just a good idea genereally, when someone reads their e-mail, turn off the red e-mail lettering. This would be a good QoL change in general, because as it is, I can't tell when I have new e-mail without deleting all of my existing e-mail first, which I'm not going to do.
Quote:7) Hunt down the RMT spammers and kill them. Yes, I know it might not be easy, and it might cost a lot of money to actually carry it out, but man, would it make me feel a lot better. I'll chip in to hire the team of assassins if necessary. Maybe you could even offer an add-on pack for $20 or so where players who buy it would get a "Nuisance Handler" badge, and use the money generated to form the hit men. -
Yep, quote pyramids are a thing of the past, but old threads still have them.

I found and posted it yesterday in a different thread about the same subject so I only needed to search my own posts this time.

Quote:My only problem with your avatar is that it's 3.2MB in size. Yes the content may be considered a bit too risque for a public game forum for a teen rated game.apparently someone is not a fan of mine b/c they allegedly reported it then repped me down to let me know about it....love the new forum options.....
Remember, overly reactive parents with lawyers on retainers are everywhere. -
Yes by all means this should be fixed by now. However I would like to point out the those in charge of coding the web site and those who wrote the script that checks the server status at the server farms may only be peripherally associated with Paragon Studios and may be under and get their marching orders from NCSoft directly. In all likelihood the web monkeys are in Seattle.
Yelling at the game developers isn't going to accomplish a whole lot. If you want to yell at someone, try PMing or VMing Niviene about your concerns. See should be able to bring these problems to the attention of the appropriate people. -
I'm reading the OPs post as the GF has a GvE box code but is stopped by the insistence to enter some kind of payment method and is wondering if a Game Card could be used.
Personally I don't know, never reactivated an account that way. You could always try buying one of those Visa Gift cards and using that. -

I HATE those commercials. Someone should shoot the advertising company that came up with that campaign. Yes I know the kids are actors but still the thought of an adult doing those things to kids fill me with RAGE.

Well they have zero posts now, they may have had numerous posts that have been purged over the years.

Not quite. Motherboards for the current crop of Core i7 cpus can use triple channel memory. Actually the memory controller on the Core i7 is part of the CPU, like in Athlon 64s and Phenoms. Core 2 cpus use a memory controller on the motherboard's Northbridge chip and they are dual channel.

For one reason or another new players have a tendency to start their characters on the servers with the most population so it becomes a positive feedback loop. Also their reputation of Freedom as the unofficial PVP server and Virtue as the unofficial RP server may contribute to their popularity.
Also those indicators are load and not population but they do tend to go hand in hand. -
Quote:Well the GTX280 is roughly twice as fast as a 8800GT, how much that translates into performance you see will depends on to many variables to adequately guess. Note that your video card choice is out of stock and likely not to come back into stock. The GTX280 was replaced with the more expensive GTX285 and nVidia introduced the GTX275 which is nearly as powerful but a bit less expensive. All right, so here's what I'm looking at now:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145176
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119129 OR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811103011
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130493
Do we see anything unnecessary or questionable? This fits just below budget; I'm wondering if I'll see much of an increase coming up from an 8800 GT in CoX - though I also use this PC for Fallout 3, Team Fortress 2; and, soon, Champions Online. So any increases there would be stellar. It's awfully pricey.. but if it's worth the bite...
Don't have a preference for the case. The PSU is very good. The memory is fine as long as their tall cooling fins don't interfere with anything. These have the same timings and voltage but $20 cheaper. But I can understand why people prefer brands that are familiar. -
Quote:The memory controller in most modern systems prefer memory in "matched pairs" (same size, speed and timings) so instead of fetching memory 8 bytes per access from a single stick of memory, it can fetch 16 bytes of memory per access in what is called "dual channel mode". If all the memory isn't set up as matched pairs then you only accessing memory at "half" speed. What would you recommend? I'm running on Windows 7 64-bit, by the way.
Also, another concern I was looking at a case for was cooling issues. I've been told that my current setup would need additional cooling (I have one processor fan, two case fans - one front, one back - and the Video Card fan running) for a beefier card.
However, going from 3GB in single channel mode to 2GB in dual channel mode may not be the move to make either. Reason is as your system runs out of actual memory, less frequently used code and data in memory is shuffled off to the page file on your hard disk. Hard disk data access is at least a factor of 100x slower than actual memory.
So it really depends on how often you use more than 2GB of memory whether or not it's a good idea to pull out one of your memory sticks.
Ideal solution is adding a fourth 1GB stick of the same speed and timings, even though the OS may only see a fraction of 1GB so the memory controler is running in dual channel mode or replace your memory with two matched 2GB sticks. -

It wasn't broken per se but an aspect of it provided infinite XP if you knew what to do and the devs couldn't figure out a way to fix that without breaking the whole CoP trial so it was pulled. Read about it here

No but if those in Australia isn't seeing the problem but those in the states are, then it's implied that the problem is with one or more switches the US players go through that Australian players don't and not the game servers in general. Or do you think NCSoft wire transpacific players through a different switch?

If you are talking bookmarks in your browser, they are dead. If you are talking about links to other treads within another thread, I would say it would be highly unlikely.
If you have the titles of the threads you use to have bookmarked, you can always you the forum search to look for them and then bookmark the new location. That's what I did. -
Quote:I'm assuming that it's 2x1GB plus 2x512MB. A perfectly legit combo while still getting dual channel memory operation. Unless the OP is running a 64-bit OS very little of that 4th GB will be of any use due to 32-bit memory usage for memory mapped devices, including the memory on the video card. The RAM is a point of concern. 3GB of RAM? That's an uneven figure. You must be running unmatched memory modules, either three 1GB sticks or a 2GB + 1GB setup. Neither are ideal. Ditch the RAM, and get yourself a 2x 2GB dual-channel kit from Corsair. Some will tell you that low-latency RAM is worth more money, but the Core 2 simply doesn't care; you'll get top speed from any good brand DDR2-800. The extra 1GB will also help CoH out quite a bit.
