Upgrading trial accounts

A friend wants to upgrade her 14 day trial account to the "Good vs. Evil Edition". She does not have a credit card and apparently time cards have been phased out, so that leaves her only option using a CoH Game Card.

Can she use the CoH Game Card to upgrade to the "Good vs. Evil Edition" (to get the extra goodies)? What are the steps for doing it?

Also, does she have to use a CoH Game Card for adding time to her game? That would be $20 a month instead of the $15 that I pay for my subscription. Are there other payment options besides using a Credit Card? maybe purchase order?

In a word: PayPal.

Time cards won't help you start an account.

Game Cards will.

EDIT:
Time cards will not upgrade a trial account to a full account. CoH Game cards will, and will give you a 30 day jetpack to all characters as well.

Also, if you can find a boxed copy of GvE, you can use the UNUSED serial code to UPGRADE your account.

The goodies in GvE are nice, but any boxed copy with an UNUSED serial code, CoH or CoV, or Architect edition, will allow you to UPGRADE your account to a full one, and make heroes or villains.

Credit cards applications take a while, and you can dig yourself a hole with them if you aren't able to discipline yourself, but it's a good idea to start on your credit rating when you can.

Otherwise, there are loadable credit cards around. Check at your banks, or Money-Marts. The user fees, monthly fees, etc make me wince.

PayPal works too, as mentioned.

Why do I put UPGRADE in caps? Because starting a new account, and not being able to use the stuff you worked on during your trial time sucks, and yes, customer service can fix that, but why wait?

In a word: cash only

She does not maintain a checking account.

So, my questions remain....
can she use the CoH game cards to upgrade?
what are the steps for doing it?
and can she use money orders to pay for her subsequent monthly subscription?

You might want to avail yourself of the extensive support system on the NC web site.

To your questions:

1. Game Time Cards vs. Game Account Cards

2. Payments via money order

Cash and the internet don't mix well, unfortunately. I'd encourage your friend to open a chequing account. I can understand a variety of reasons why somebody would not carry a credit card, but honestly everybody in this day an age should have a basic chequing account.

IMO.

Game cards will work.

1) Get Game Card
2) Go to www.plaync.com
3) Log into PlayNC Master Account (could have different user/password than CoH Game Account)
4) (deleted)
5) Select trial CoH Game Account
6) Select UPGRADE Account
7) Enter Serial Code
8) Check confirmation message
9) Keep all serial codes on file for future reference. In case you forget your passwords, it's one way Customer Service verifies that indeed, it is you!
10) Log out of PlayNC
11) Fire up CoH, and play!

If you've been already playing the trial, you don't need to load or install anything. The full game is already on your machine, but now your account has access to the real deal!

I've actually already been to the first link you listed, but thank you for the second.

From what I saw, the game cards will not give her Pocket D access, or the Justice costume sets. If, for the same price, she could use the card to upgrade to the GvE edition and get the extra goodies... why not?

The page for the GvE edition says that a ccard or game card can be used to activate it, but I'm wondering what the steps are so I can spell it out for her.

About the cash only business... don't even get me started! I've been 'round and 'round with her about it for YEARS. She closed all her bank accounts in a fit of rebellion about 7 years ago. She only uses cash, money orders and gift cards for almost everything now.

The loadable Visa card might work... but I thought there were restrictions on the type of transactions they could be used for?

She CAN use the CoH game card to upgrade the account.
She can NOT use it to upgrade to the Good vs Evil edition.
Time cards still exist, but seem to be hard to find.
They don't take checks or money orders - electronic payments only (credit card, PayPal).

In order to get the GvsE goodies, via cash only method, she would need to go to a store and buy the GvsE box edition. That will upgrade the account, give one free month, plus the GvsE stuff.

Are you good friends with / in physical proximity to this person? She could give you the cash and you could order from Amazon.com. They seem to have all the editions available *AND* they have the time cards (60 day time card for $29.99).

This is the tricky part... can she UPGRADE to the Good vs. Evil Edition?.. or any other edition, for that matter... so as to get the extra goodies?

I was thinking about the pre-paid Visa cards too, but seem to think I read something about restrictions regarding their use. I couldn't find any specific information after a search, though, so I can't say for certain.

In any case, if this is a particularily good friend of yours, as the other poster suggested, perhaps you could purchase her upgrade and ongoing time on your credit card, and simply have your friend pay you the cash. Not sure if your circumstances lend itself to this scenario, but the option is "out there".

you guys are too fast for my slow fingers!

Thank you for clarifying, Ironblade, that is indeed the crux of the question.

Unfortunately, she is in another state... about 600 miles away, so I'm trying to pull the info together to send her as clearly and concisely as possible.

I'm reading the OPs post as the GF has a GvE box code but is stopped by the insistence to enter some kind of payment method and is wondering if a Game Card could be used.

Personally I don't know, never reactivated an account that way. You could always try buying one of those Visa Gift cards and using that.

Incorrect. She does NOT have the box code. She has the 14 day trial account. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

As far as I know, if you want the GvE goodies, you need

1) The GvE physical box, with unused serial code.
2) Credit card, and order GvE code through the website.

Waitamminut, I recall some foo-fer-a a few months back, trying to get a friend to upgrade with a physical box code, and it required a credit card anyway! Is that true? Anyone done that lately?

Yeah, I understand wanting to give banks the finger...

Well, if you really trust this person, they could use your credit card number.

Giving them the finger is one thing, but not even owning a chequing account would fall under the Baby-Bathwater heading, IMO. Banks don't make money on a single service, basic personal chequing account customer.

Mind you, not sure what this person's motives might have been.

You are required to have something set up for your monthly billing when creating your account. This can be a Credit Card, a Time Card, or a PayPal subscription.

Regardless of her motives, it has become a lifestyle choice for her.

We all make life choices along the way, it's what makes each of us unique. Sometimes our choices present problems that require a little creativity to solve. Criticizing someone's choices does not solve the problem.

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions, and the clarifications on how the game cards work.

Not sure I'd reasonably describe my earlier post as criticizing. I went out of my way to point out her motives were unclear.

<shrug>

But sometimes the choices create a problem for no good reason. Sometimes. And sometimes people can be persuaded to make different choices.

This is all hypothetical, of course, since we're not talking to your friend.
