  1. Multiple GPU support is never an automatic thing. A game needs to be designed in such a way that ATI's and nVidia's methods of supporting multiple GPUs will work effectively. There have always been games that support multiple GPUs well, OK and even some where the framerates actually got worse. And due to the lack of a plethora of OpenGL games, I'm sure OpenGL SLi may be a bit more dodgy than DirectX.

Now during the closed Beta there was a red name post about a super secret pre alpha command line flag to enable some kind of multiple GPU support but stated repeatedly as a very, very preliminary attempt at providing this support so if it doesn't work or the game gets unstable don't come running for help, we warned you. Not sure if that made it out of closed Beta.
  2. Revamped graphics engine so give the buffers thing another try.
  3. I PMed him Kosmos and yes it was that Dell. I believe he went and ordered it from BestBuy after our chat.
  4. First after red name.

... and knowing is half the battle.

    Thanks for the explanation.
  5. Only problem with that Healix is the game's renderer is OpenGL not DirectX.
  6. Even worse. Integrated video.
  7. Well ideally by releasing UM early, they will be able to get that stable across all platforms, fix or specifically define conflicts with other programs so when GR, the paid expansion, hits the shelves, it will mostly be content and not major subsystem overhauling so GR would be a relatively smooth rollout. Knock on wood.

And where did you get that crazy idea from? One has nothing to do with the other.

I'm honestly hoping that that stuff, and other stuff, really is in the Live patch, and that they're testing it.
And while those things are true on the client side, they have nothing to do with getting the server software installed and running and getting the secondary patch up on the patch servers.

Good thing I don't have to worry about this until I get home. And then it'll still be several hours, perhaps a day or two until I'm on live depending on the size of the secondary patch.

There are a ton of reviews out there about this.

    Tom's Hardware
    X-Bit Labs
    bit-tech.net
    AnandTech
    The Tech Report

And those are from the sites I normally read.

The conclusions are mixed. What AMD did was to add two cores, enable a kind of turbo mode when only 3 cores are busy but didn't expand the L3 cache and it's "rated" clock speed is a little slower than the 4 core Phenom II X4 965 (3.2GHz Vs 3.4GHz). Now in tasks that can't use the extra cores, like most games, the older four core Phenom II tended to perform better. Where the new X6 CPUs did perform better than even Intel's CPUs is during some video encoding benchmarks. However overall the Phenom II X6 1090t was still beaten by the slightly less expensive ($280-295 Vs $310) Intel i7-860, i7-920 and i7-930. The older X4 965 is only $186.

In tests that actually use all 6 cores, the new AMD processors perform nearly as well as similarly priced 4 core Intel i7s and definitely better than AMD's previous top dog. But the question, as always when you get near the top end of a CPU line, is it worth the $120+?

Read the reviews, draw your own conclusions.

    New laptop

The combination of resolution, framerate and pretty that is acceptable is very much a personal preference.

It's just my personal judgment that an integrated graphics solution, even ATI's which is better than most, isn't going to ever cut it at 3D gaming. And since you can't really swap out the graphics in a laptop it's my belief that you should get as much as you can for as much as what you are willing to spend.

So compare the two and see if you think the Acer is worth $150 more than the Toshiba. Use the image viewers to compare the keyboard layout. Read the reviews to see what people didn't like about them.

And I guess a ST:TOS reference is too old for you young whippersnappers.

    New laptop

Can we point and laugh? What are you going to ask next? Construct a mnemonic memory circuit using stone knives and bearskins?

Seriously, it's a tough request to find a laptop with some amount of graphics horsepower for $600. Let's see what's at NewEgg.

In my case I'm looking at laptops with discrete GPUs that rank at least Class 2 according to Notebookcheck and comes with Win 7. With that criteria I only came up with four under $700 with only one under $600. Of the four the one with the fastest GPU is the $680 one out of stock. The HD 4570 in the other three should be at least twice as fast as the integrated HD 4100 in the laptop you linked to.
  16. Here's the official support page on video cards. SiS was never supported, more like SiS never had a reasonable OpenGL 3D driver. You could always go look and see if there is one better. The latest for Windows 7 is 5.26 which came out January 19th this year. Not sure if that's any better than what you currently have (don't think there's a driver version number in the info you posted).

    Sorry.
  17. Well a "gimped" my Ill/Kin Controller by not taking Increased Density, Speed Boost or Inertial Reduction because I'm playing her kinetic powers as a form of shifting luck and therefore she can't "grant" teammates effects that she can't "shift" from an opponent. She also doesn't have Repel.

  19. New Forum software wasn't compatible with City Scoop's layout. Their were no alternate means to do something similar.

Also all those links to players are to the old forum database and that's why they don't work.
  20. Well you need to make a shortcut to cohupdater so the game can patch.

    New pc for I17?

Only weird thing. The i7-860 doesn't require a tri-memory kit since it's memory controller is only dual channel, not triple channel like the i7-9xx.
  22. Nope. The trial is identical to the game, it's your account info that determines if it's has trial limitations or not.
  23. In all honestly, save your money to buy a better basic box. One that can take full size cards, standard power supplies and have at least a PCIx16 slot.

Yes that doesn't really help when you don't have a lot of cash but CPU overhauls on pre-built store bought computers are just disasters waiting to happen IMO.
  24. Changing a CPU in a pre-built has a whole list of possible things that can go wrong.

    1) Will the BIOS in the system recognize the new CPU? If what you have installed already is truly an AMD Athlon 64 2650e (which you can confirm with a utility like CPU-Z) then it's a good sign (but not a guarantee) that it'll recognize the AMD Athlon X2 4850e because the 4850e came out before the 2650e.

    2) Will there be a problem with power requirements or heat dissipation. The 4850E is a 45 watt part where the 2650e is rated at 15 watts. The system specs you linked to does say it could handle up to a 45 watt part so that should probably be OK. Then comes the question about cooling. Since we have no idea if that system can support a standard AMD cooler that would come with 4850E or if you would be forced to reuse the one attached to the 2650e, I can't tell if this would be a problem or not, there is no info on cracking open the system.

    3) Going from a single core to a dual core CPU will require a complete reinstall of the OS. There is low level parts of the OS that are different for single core Vs multi core. Otherwise you will just have a faster single core.

And these are the potential problems I can think of off hand. And while kicking the clock speed up 50% and adding a 2nd core could help with your performance not sure by how much.

As for the GPU, the PCIex1 and the slim line case design will greatly limit your choices and performance potential of any add in video card. NewEgg does have two different HD 4350s that fit the requirements but the are very expensive ($110) relative to their performance. GPU wise either would be faster than an integrated 6150SE but the interface is equivalent to a little less than AGP1x could wipe out that advantage.
