Yep, got the old VCR programmed.
Don't be too shocked Forbin, they did move their anime block from Monday 11p - 1a to Friday 1a-3a.
Never actually watched the original, just the movies. -
Missing parts.
Optical drive. Pick a SATA DVD burner for around $20 at NewEgg.
Video Card.
Copy of the OS. Win 7 SP1 OEM disk is $100 at NewEgg.
A "better" CPU cooler.
Depends on what you are planning to scavenge from your old box.
From the product FAQ on Thermaltake's website, that case can handle a heatsink no taller than 163mm. That means the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ can just fit at 159mm, assuming the product sheet isn't fibbing (FrostyTech review says it's 161mm). It's currently $35 at NewEgg.
FrostyTech is a good source for reviews that include size if you go another way with the CPU cooler (Zalman, Xigmatech, Thermatake or other brand).
In the $150-200 range for video cards it's basically either an HD 6850 or a 1GB GTX 460 (NOT the 460SE), both in the high end of that range (before rebate) and are about 3x as powerful as your HD 4650. In the low end of that range it's either the HD 6790 or the even slower GTX 550Ti. They are 15-25% slower than the HD 6850 or 1GB GTX 460. Note that there are some insanely overclocked 1GB GTX 460s in the 850MHz range that are well worth the price. -
The great thing about SG-1 toward the end of the series is that the team became so trope aware that it was like an in joke.
-
The US commercials for the movie has a catch phrase that goes something like;
"The world has many heroes" - showing Hulk, Iron-man, Nick Fury
"but only one is a God"
That can't go over well in the south. -
I was afraid you had the desktop when you listed that fan info.
Only problem I've found looking at low-profile 6200 cards that come with a low-profile bracket is most of them have only the DVI (digital out) port available and not the analog VGA D-SUB port. However you can get relatively cheap via NewEgg a DVI to VGA adapter in the $4-8 range.
Or you could, wouldn't recommend, not to install the low-profile bracket and just dangle the VGA port out the back on it's little ribbon cable. It's fugly and if you aren't careful as you could Conan (as in the Barbarian) the connector right off the card damaging the cable, header or even the card.
Note, the way the desktop GX270 is configured, it only has one low profile slot out the back so the cards with a second low profile bracket for the VGA port isn't any help. -
Quote:Right under that, if you manually look up an OptiPlex GX270 Series (Desktop and Mini-Tower) is says ...according to http://crucial.com
Your OptiPlex GX270 Series (Desktop and Mini-Tower) System Specs
Scan Id: 53CCD44531D926C3
Memory:
DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200
Memory Type: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
Total Memory Slots: 4
Available Memory Slots: 2
I am curious about the 'memory is in pairs' comment... Does that mean I can't just buy 1 GB of the correct RAM on Amazon or something and add it on to the 510 MB already installed? Would I have to buy 2 sticks of the same size to upgrade?
Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.
Yes you can simply add on a single 1GB stick of memory. The system will run slower than if you used two 512MB sticks but it will still be many many times faster than only having 512MB in the system.
Also DDR-333 is also called PC2700, DDR-400 is also called PC3200.
You still haven't answered my question as to what configuration of GX270 you have other than ruling out the small form factor. So again I will ask, Desktop or Mini-Tower, which is it?Quote:Ok-- I planned on upgrading to only 1.5-2 GB of RAM for now. I was just going to pick it up used on Amazon on the cheap. You said I could get a card for 40-130 and I'd be willing to spend somewhere in the middle of that, with the RAM hopefully totalling less than $100. I'm having trouble keeping up with your math I guess because unless a new power supply is going to be $300 I don't know how you arrived at 300-400 total.
Exactly what would I need to upgrade the power supply to in order to get a card that will properly support COH, even if on minimum settings? I'm not concerned about anything flashy right now, I figure if I dump like $150 dollars into this thing it should be in working order... I definitely wouldn't be able to get a whole new computer for that unless it 'fell off a truck.'
edit: a quick search brought these up:
delloptiplex gx270 470 W Power Supply Replacement: $29.98
http://www.cputopia.com/hp-400w-dell...lex-gx270.html
SPARKLE SF8834DT256MB GeForce FX 5200 256M AGP TV-Out S-Video DVI Graphics Card: $34.99
http://www.amazon.com/SPARKLE-SF8834...3255346&sr=8-5
I really can't see how to match these things up to see if they are compatible with one another, et cetera... But, if everything is in order it would cost about $70.00 after shipping.
Now if you don't have the mini-tower, that PSU and video card you found won't do you any good because they won't fit. No idea where to find an upgrade to the PSU in the desktop system and the video card slot in the desktop system needs a low profile card for the AGP slot.
Here's the service manual for the GX270, it covers all the models.
As for video cards, I would shy away from the FX 5200. The FX series was nVidia's one major misstep in GPU development. I would have you look at GeForce 6200 AGP cards. -
Laptops, not significantly upgradeable.
Desktops, usually more so than laptops.
Big difference Res10x.

Now for the OP. Now I'm assuming the Studio XPS 7100 is the AMD system and the Studio XPS 9100 is the i7-930 system. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Both should be able to do Ultramode reasonably well since it's the same video card between the two. Of the two CPUs, the Intel does perform better when gaming. For a single instance of the game, 4GB of memory is enough so 8 or 12GB is plenty.
The 7100 is a microATX tower case with a rear fan and can fit two hard drives. The 9100 has both a front and rear fan and can also support two hard drives.
So it's up to you. It sounds like you rather go with the Intel system. -

Now the Brigadier was not surprising, but dear sweet Sarah Jane ... no.
Somewhere there's a little robot dog waiting for his mistress. -
Drive by post.
First, it depends on what "format" that system is, there are three; small form factor, desktop and mini tower. The particular configuration determines power supply (160,210,250), number of ram slots (2, 4 or 4) and physical size of the video card (half height, half height, full height AGP).
All three use DDR memory, not DDR2 or DDR3, original DDR. It can use 1GB sticks. Either DDR-333 or DDR-400. You can use the utility CPU-Z to determine what the current sticks in the system are. Memory is in pairs.
More later. -
Nice in joke with La Barbilla.
Origin of Chuck Finley alias.
Cameo with stubble Mike (who directed this).
We got a "Groovy". -
I finally got I20 downloaded (dial-up, don't want to hear it), the other two patches applied and I came home to a 150+MB patch. I hate hot fixes because it seams that they don't/can't/won't do a differential and make a true patch but instead bulk replace entire files.
Yes I know I'm way, way, way in the minority here. Just blowing off some steam. Hoping to be patched up before the anniversary, if they let me. -
Javascript isn't related to the Java plug in from Oracle. It's handled entirely by the browser. Of course nearly all modern browsers now compile javascript on the fly with their own compiler.

No better or worse than any number of anime series that go on "forever".
Besides "monster of the week" they had "fitting in" with high school youth; who is G3?; is that Lance's father; dealing with Steel; personal growth; back stories; accessing Titan's full functionality. A lot of potential story material to tap.
Sure I don't thing the series could drive a storyline as long as Bleach et al but another 13 to 20 episodes, sure. -
I know I'm a couple weeks late on this but Sym-Bionic Titan was canceled not due to poor ratings but lack of a suitably sized product line!
Did they even try? You have monster of the week, in both character and kaiju size. You have the main characters, their armor, Titan, The HMER, G3 troops, G3 mecha, Am I missing something? Oh, their gadget watches.
grumble, grumble, grumble, idiots -
Scanlations kill off another English manga publisher.
Has anyone tried e-publishing manga for devices like the Kindle, Nook, iPad?
Noticed a young women, not a high schooler, reading Boku ni Natta Watashi (shoujo trope 263: sister forced to pretend to be her twin brother at all boys boarding school, hijinks ensue) online at my public library out in East Boonieville. Don't think any publisher licensed that title in NA but I'm sure whatever site she was at had loads of NA licensed manga to read as well. -
I also remember in the early days of the game hanging in Steel by Posi and somebody said "Hey look Treants. Why are they conning purple?" Then someone aggroed them.
And that's how I was first introduced to the Devouring Earth. And more debt. -
-
Hey I like Kate. However I admit she's no where near as hot as Ashley.
-
I didn't have it myself but I remember crossing paths with John Travoltage and another Santa claws scrapper name Old Saint Snick.

Oh you mean ... nevermind.
City of Heroes integrated PhysX way back when is was newer than new. Ageia was giving it away to developers because they were going to make their money on the PhysX hardware. What programing interface to the PhysX library was changed at some point and what our game uses is the original. When Ageia was devoured by nVidia and the PhysX algorithms were converted into CUDA for the Dx10 cards and up, nVidia decided to only support the newer interface to the library and not the old one we used. That's why our PhysX hardware support doesn't work with nVidia's PhysX drivers.
Now I don't know how it changed or if altering CoH to use the new interface is a lot of work or not. I'm guessing nobody wants to figure out the original implementation of physics in this game.
As to High Vs Very High. Supposedly the software emulator for PhysX can only do High while Very High was reserved for hardware support. No idea how many more objects are allowed in the Very High setting. Never knew anyone personally who had the hardware to see the difference.
Yes, this is pretty much a non answer. If you don't see a performance drop between High and Very High, then leave it on Very High. -
More nightmare fuel for the fire.

These guys really need to meet the "Gentlemen" from Buffy's Hush episode.
