Sad face.

The NA publishing branch is closing. The only title that it affects for me is Sgt. Frog, but I'm way behind in the volumes to begin with.

Well, that's good then because CMX went under last year.

Viz, Dark Horse, Yen Press, Del Ray are the ones putting out stuff that I'm currently buying.

Scanlations kill off another English manga publisher.

Has anyone tried e-publishing manga for devices like the Kindle, Nook, iPad?

Noticed a young women, not a high schooler, reading Boku ni Natta Watashi (shoujo trope 263: sister forced to pretend to be her twin brother at all boys boarding school, hijinks ensue) online at my public library out in East Boonieville. Don't think any publisher licensed that title in NA but I'm sure whatever site she was at had loads of NA licensed manga to read as well.

As I recall from other articles I saw on it, the combination of Borders' bankruptcy and Japan's recent hardships were where they laid most of the blame. Which isn't to say other factors didn't contribute, but I've rarely seen a company hesitate to blame piracy for stuff if they legitimately can.

Edit: Oh, hey, those are in that article. I need to read better.

Well, if what I was reading was right (in the comment thread of the article) TP only had 6 workers in the LA office. The rest were freelancers.

TP sorta had crap translations... just saying...

HA! (sucks that people became unemployed, but I loathed that they censored mangas.)

Is Del Rey still publishing manga? I haven't seen them advertising anything lately. Kodansha is starting to publish in the US now, under the Kodansha Comics banner, and I notice that they've taken over publishing Negima from Del Rey.

Sad to hear about Tokyopop. They've been struggling for a while. Viz better keep going, because they're publishing Claymore, and that's my favorite ongoing manga series.

I've heard varying things about the Del Ray/Kodansha thing, so I can't really say for certain.

Hmmm...Yen, Seven Seas, and Viz take up my manga list, I don't see any TokyoPop in it at all.

That said, still waiting on Kurahima #15m which was suppossed to be out like a year ago!

All I can say about this is that I still have a number of the initial MIXXzine issues and some of the Sailor Moon single issues floating around.

Shame Tokyopop folded like that, but it had a presence for a good while.

Thank you for the time...

If you mean Kurohime Volume 15 from Viz, then as far as I know, it's been dropped.

I tend to take things I read on boards with a pinch of salt, but that thread gives a plausible reason for vol 15 not appearing.

So far as Tokyopop, I was buying a few of theirs, Samurai Deeper Kyo got picked up and finished by Del Rey IIRC, but Getbackers has disappeared

Sidebar...anyone know of any good, reputable sites that sell the original, untranslated manga? At less than extortionary prices?

Kindle store search: "manga"

One of the publishers that turns up for several series is even named "Digital Manga Publishing".

Edit: Hmm... the Kindle seems to have an impressive ratio of yaoi manga...

I know ya'll against scanlation but Kurohime has been fully scanlated if you want the story Now.

I actually want to own the whole series. However, since they stopped printing it now, I actually just started reading it online.

I try to avoid it, but I own the first 14 volumes and waited this long for volume 15. I'll still buy the rest of it if Viz ever starts printing it again.

I'm not per se against scanslations. I've read a lot of them, but I far prefer to hold a lump of dead tree in my hands while I read manga. I find it tiring to read manga off a monitor.

I'm up to date on several manga series via scanslations, but I still buy the manga as and when they're released.

On the flip side, there are several series that I don't read scanslated, as the English releases are SO far behind the Japanese that it just irritates me.

On the whole, however, Scanslations have led to me buying more manga, not less.

Canine... yes the japanese companies have pretty much stated that since scanlating and such have become more widely available their profits have gone up... same with many companies that embrace modern distrobution.

I personally find it more pleasurable to read off my PC than to read a book or whatever... and i'm far more likely to buy a digital copy of things than i am a physical copy, especially if there are backs up and such in place that allow for crashes and such. And that is just amplified by the fact that i live with 5 pets and a mother who doesn't understand that books and stuff can be important and moving them around carelessly can damage them irreparably so there is a high chance that just about anything i get physically will be destroyed soon after.

I'll have to agree with the preference to read the book versus off the monitor. I also prefere to own a copy that way than own a copy on my computer.

Well...how about any English websites that sell the originals? I'm not against learning Japanese to read a comic. I've tried Amazon.co.jp, and they have some, but not all of the copies I'm looking for. Plus, ya know, the whole mostly-in-japanese on the website making it somewhat difficult to order as well as...large...shipping costs (basically over $33 per shipment).
