Star Blazers on SyFy tonight 4/21?

WTF! I was channel surfing a few minutes ago looking for something to watch later tonight and SyFy claims they'll be airing Star Blazers at 2-3 am EST!

Has the world gone crazy?

Everything is now topsy turvy!

The channel that has been steadily distancing themselves from Sci-Fi by bringing us gems like Professional Wrasslin has suddenly decided to air not only a classic scf-fi show but classic anime.

Rabble! Rabble! Rabble!

It sure looks like it.

Set the DVR to record. Looks like it's starting from the beginning. Should be interesting indeed.

Thank you for the time...

Yep, got the old VCR programmed.

Don't be too shocked Forbin, they did move their anime block from Monday 11p - 1a to Friday 1a-3a.

Never actually watched the original, just the movies.

What has me shocked isn't that they moved their anime block. The lady in charge of SyFy has gone on record saying she doen't like sci-fi at all and has been doing things to minimize the amount of sci-fi the channel airs.

This is something like the 2nd or 3rd move that the anime block had, iirc. They moved it to Tuesday to start, then I think it went to Wednesday, and now it's Thursday/Friday morning.

As to the woman in charge...why in the hell would you take a job at a sci-fi channel if you hate sci-fi? That's like a vegan taking a job as the head of Burger King. It's the exact opposite of sense.

1974, when 8fps was enough for animation on the cheap.

Yea, I knew they've been moving the block around, it's just that this is the first time that there's something "new" I wanted to watch on it.

And don't forget, this is a 1979 dub and edit of the series so no Nova fan service and no footage of the original Yamato sinking in WWII.

At least there isn't any "robot fighters" or "lucky they made it to the escape pods" edits. The general plot, deaths and near destruction of Earth is intact. I find it interesting that only a few years later US time (5-6 years) that Robotech's similar mature story line caused it's relatively quick removal from syndication.

the question does beg itself, Why become the head of SyFy, if you hate sci-fi. Its a bit like become the head of Apple and being a total ludite. There have been a number of niche channels that were successful as niche channels, but ended up dying a painful death when new management came in and fiddled with the format. Does anyone remember Tech TV for instance?

Got up this morning and watched the eps off of the DVR.

At this point and time, it's a guilty pleasure more than anything else. It'll be worth watching while having breakfast Fri. mornings anyways.

Now a question for those who are really into the show and it's history. When originally aired, wasn't the Yamato referred by the name Argo from the start or was the name change done after? I just don't feel like Wiki hunting right now for that answer.

Thank you for the time...

In the English Star Blazers dub, the ship is noted as being the historical Yamato, but is then renamed the Argo (after the ship of Jason and the Argonauts).

They made this (ala the original "Space Battleship Yamato") into a live action feature film over in Japan. It came out last December.

I have the entire series on DVD and watch it every so often. One of the best written anime series ever!

Now if only someone would come along and create a Starblazers MMO...

The fault is mine, not yours. Not a worry.

IMO if there is any fault to be had it belongs to SyFy. I saw no advertisements for the show being made. The only reason I caught it was because I had clicked ahead a couple of hours on my cable providers channel guide. It was only pure luck I found out it was being aired at all.

So you couldn't have known to check here for a heads up.

I weep with tears of joy! My favorite anime in the history of ever!

And this will go good at work with the daily gunships vs. gundams which is better battle. My buddy at work was to young to have caught Starblazers when it was on TV.
