Dominators and Controllers are listed in the Pets category with a Primary pet power that gives them a rating of "5" for pets.

Blaster Melee damage rating is an 8! yet the devs don't list them as a melee damage category AT. That's pretty revealing of the dev thought process where blasters are concerned.
Honestly, I think the only thing any of this means is that those numbers are pretty meaningless... as most everyone has said since they first showed up in Freedom beta.

You're taking the reverse stance... that those numbers are meaningful and the reality is off!

Hopefully they get the price point right and can generate more income from the non-9s without agitating the 9's too much.
You and a few people are making large assumptions as to the Tier-9 VIP being better for business...

As opposed to how much money they'd make for selling those costume sets.

I'm not convinced that more money comes from having these VIP rewards. Honestly (and hats off to Paragon Studios), with just a few calculations it seems more likely that the company would make more money by selling them directly in the store (to any and all buyers).

The real answers lie within the question: How many VIPs would shell out the excessive amount of dough to fly up the Tiers compared to how many sales of packs they have for popular costume packs? We'd have to factor in the useage of stipend points as well.
I seriously don't think a large contingent of people only subscribe for the costumes at Tier 9. And I don't think there'd be any mass exodus if the exclusivity of those costumes were "diminished".

I don't know what is better for business, but neither does anyone but the people running the business, with the numbers in front of them.

    wings

Huh, is that right? Freebies can't make the costume recipes? I've not tested that (I've not tested any freebie stuff yet, actually, hehe).

When considering the OP's question (regardless of how old this thread is), it does make me realize how much of a mess such a commonly desired (and often character defining) costume piece as wings are to acquire!

Seems a shame to me, but that's just my opinion on it. So many cool wing options, but they're somewhat buried in veteran rewards and random recipe drops (very common and easy to get on the market, but still a bit obscure for a new player looking to make a character).
However, the Valkyrie and Organic wings are available right up front (for a small price), as are the Steampunk wings.
Just seems like they should, at least, get some more standard wings in the character creator... because we do have them! The way it is makes it seem like the costume creator is more lacking than it really is.

    More Proof.....

I don't think this means what you think it means...

You can't classify an AT as melee when most of its Primary Powers are Ranged!
Yes, a Blaster is a mix of Ranged and Melee, but to classify them specifically as "Melee" along with pure Melee ATs (even the ranged heavy Spines and Claws don't count enough to be classified as "Ranged") would be entirely misleading!
  6. Without IO sets and inventive craziness that people use to create greater awesomeness...

Dark Armor is another one of those sets that is just different. And people are always going to number crunch and/or try and play it like they play other sets and dislike it for the fact that it is not as efficient to use in that manner as most other sets.

The set really delivers on the thematic element of its power source and focuses on draining, disorienting, debilitating, freaking-out and giving you power more than other melee sets. Yes, it protects you the normal ways, but it also protects you (and empowers you) in different ways... And you either can enjoy that or not... but this game has a wonderful amount of choices that work in different ways and not everyone will like those ways.
IOs and the like can help people enjoy these odd sets in the normal playstyle ways, but the developers can't just make these odd sets equal to other sets for the normal playstyle, because then they'd have to lower its odd benefits, otherwise it'd be too powerful... and then we'd lose another exotic creature as a result.

Save the odd powersets!! They are great! You keep your round pegs and holes and respect the square pegs, please!
  7. <-- is not surprised by the ugliness

It starts with the idea to rotate out gated rewards that most everyone sees inherent problems with.
As a solution, the team shows a commitment to offer those rewards in some other way.
Some people don't wish for such developer-initiated solutions for the problem to take place... and/or express hopes for substantial requirements for others to attain what they've already attained.

To paraphrase a kind gentleman who'd not share such concerns...
    Why so ugly?

Okay, off the top of my head, people would hate me for...

    • I'd enable Villains and Heroes to travel to each and every zone.
      • I'd figure out what further balancing I'd need to do for Vigilantes and Rogues. They may just be vestigial or they'd have benefits... not entirely certain.
    • Enabling challenge/accept PvP dueling (solo and teams) for all open zones. There would be an auto-decline option and it would be entirely by choice to ever enter into a duel of any type.
      • However, people would hate me just for having to see PvP going on in a regular zone.
      • for the record, I never PvP, but I'd like this game to have the option to pummel on each other anywhere and everywhere, should we so choose.
    • I'd slow down the day/night cycle.
      • I'd make it at least half the speed it is now (that's likely no where near enough... maybe 5 times as slow), but very likely it'd be a lot slower than that.
      • Special night spawns would be available elsewhere for the impatient!

I'm sure there are some others... Likely more about shifting the game's baseline dynamics to match a slower, enjoy smelling the roses sort of pace, as opposed to the full team, flash, boom, pow and move to the next spawn pace of today, hehe. As well as plenty of focus on customization and seemingly insignificant virtual reality considerations...

    Lastly...
    • People would hate me for how happy I was.

I can't recall the exact number, but I'm pretty sure that Beam Rifles was 600 and change... If I'm wrong, that's weird, because it has stuck in my head as it having been something around 635-645.

Anyway... very nice to see a great powerset go on a sale price!
I think that set is very much worth the price!

    I felt the same way.
My neutral is a bit more optimistic/enthusiastic than that!

I had a hard time answering Number 8,"Do you think we should offer VIP exclusive items in the Paragon Market?", because, while my answer is "yes" I feel like it could be a case-by-case basis on whether or not they'd be permanently held from nonVIPs or opened up eventually.
I ended up answering permanently, just to show that I do support that, if the case seems to call for it (possibly rotated out VIP Tier 9 costumes).

I also said that I run Trials and Solo Incarnate content, but I listed "none, I don't run trials" as my answer to my favorite, because 1) I don't really have a single favorite and 2) I still haven't run a few of the later ones!!

Also... the "most exciting future additions" was easy... MORE POWER CUSTOMIZATION!

I find myself putting a lot of this into the category of This game has pretty successfully covered a lot of the obvious/important stuff (and more), and much of what is left (that doesn't seem impossible for this engine) is going to be odd/eccentric stuff. (I'll have to come up with a shorter title for that category some day, haha)

That's what I've come to think, as I struggle to find new ideas that aren't as widely craved as new things of the past.
    Good stuff.

    Mayhem Missions!!
Honestly, I pretty much just do paper and mayhem missions Redside (not necessarily because I dislike the other content, but more-so, because I enjoy the freedom of being my own villain via the generic missions... and getting to rob banks and destroy things including police and heroes!).
I don't need any other content! Just mentioning it for fun's sake... not that everyone should agree with me.

    ...
As Olantern summed up pretty well, it's not about "booster" packs, but "Super" packs.

People were happy spending their money and points on known/guaranteed virtual items. Some people have zero interest in randomized grab bags (which is fine), but... by adding in exclusive content, in the form of costume pieces (we all know how many issues gated costumes can create among this game's fans) there was a lot of negative reaction to the new packs.

It's no new ideology of some players... it was a new type of transaction.
    *shrugs*

    Glad the event went well!
  15. Just got in from a late night of work in New York...
Would have loved to have made it over there this weekend, but please say hi to everyone there!

Glad the good times are being had.
  16. I suggest this to new players, but I think it may help a returning player as well...
Forget about the numbers and what people say is or isn't the best...
Just play make believe and let the game deliver the fun like only it does.

There are no wrong choices (in ATs, powersets, content)... just different paths.

I agree that for travel and suchnot we already have a ton of options. But having access would be nice, if it's possible.
    Exactly.

Dr. Doom may not be invited as a guest, but he can figure out a way in and make his uninvited appearance there and/or he can be brought back there as a captive.
If we're going to include role-play (which I think is a great thing!), that includes the role-play reasons some of us would love to see this option in place.

I understand the thoughts against such a change. However, if your SG turns against your will, then perhaps it is not your SG. Either make sure the SG is what you want it to be or accept what it is.

Honestly, all I would like is the ability to share access. That'd open up some fantastic possibilities.

The way this could be done to satisfy both sides is to require a special invite for such cross-faction visitations.
The permissions can be customized for who can invite cross faction.

Lastly, I would just simply like for Rogues and Vigilantes to be able to cross (I mean, I'd love to be able to have pure heroes and villains gain access as well, but I could understand only the grey alignments being able to).

    EDIT:
And, yes, Vanguard and the growing number of co-op scenarios are an in-game/in-universe prime example for why being able to have cross-faction access is "obvious".

    How badly...

Count me as someone who really has little-to-no interest in new ATs... other than some shapeshifting thing they can cleverly use new mechanics to accomplish (and, yes, this is what I've said before anything was leaked).

There are other things I want to see far more badly and I've always felt like the current ATs cover everything quite well.

Further power customization (pool, ancillary, epic powers) sits at the top of my list of desires, miles above new ATs.
  19. This thread had me going through my character roster to check...
And it made me realize that I don't update my characters' outfits. It's not that I necessarily have a rule against it, but I haven't done so. And I didn't want to start out by saying that I "haven't" updated them, as that sounds like I intended to or that they needed it, hehe.

It's strange, because (as many like to point out to me) I am "overly" picky. So, you'd think that I'd tweak and update a good amount, but I apparently haven't.

Anyway, I can't really think of any costumes, off hand, that came to life because of one piece that finally was made available to us. I keep thinking that I must be forgetting something, but I haven't found it yet, if that is the case.

    Still... fun topic!

Is the system anything like this old one?
The old game was simple (we always played far more AD&D), yet that always seemed to be a big reason why it was such a great alternative.
Simple, broad, blocky rules ("blocky" because each column really covered ridiculous territory, especially the higher you went), but such an enormous depth to the powers and power usage.
The only real advancement we ever did with our characters, besides story-wise and building upon your place in the world, was power stunts.
Still, lack of power advancement always felt kinda right for the genre.

Anyway... sorry for the ramble about the old system... good memories (and Electric-Knight came from there), but I am curious how you'd compare the new system to the old (if it compares much at all).

And... not including a character creation system (besides the update on the internet now) is somewhat interesting. While it seems rather disappointing and odd, I could also see using a system where you just take pre-made examples and build your own characters yourselves without much hindrance of rules or anything.
You need to be able to trust the players for that, but in a world where we can be like Captain America or Hulk or Wolverine... have at it. The players aren't the only ones!
A team of Beyonders though... Good luck, GM!!
