  1. Yesterday I ran into this at the Pocket D on Virtue.

Yes. That's a bird. It talks too. It uses the same NPC gossip lines as NPC civilians (like "I'm not so sure about those Vanguard *CLICK* LORD NEMESIS IS WATCHING YOU, $charname *CLICK* guys, are you?"). Other times if you click on it, it gives the time. So it's an NPC civilian.

Except it's a talking seagull sitting in the middle of Pocket D next to DJ Zero. Just sitting there, doing nothing... and talking sometimes. Weirdest/coolest thing.

But I wanna ask... can we keep it? Pleeeeaaasssee? Null the Talking Pocket D Bird is awesome!

    League Lag

Last night on the Virtue server, a group of about 30 people attempted to run a Mothership raid using the League system. We were almost instantly hit with crushing amounts of lag as our powers took forever to fire. You'd hit an attack... and it might fire several seconds later. You'd see groups of people gathered around the pylons doing nothing as they waited to make at least one attack. It was terrible.

For the second run, we broke the League and went with the setup of just several teams. No League formed, no League chat, etc, just a handful of teams communicating via Broadcast, Local, and Request. The lag encountered in the first raid? Non-existant this time around. Same with the third raid. No League, no lag.

I've encountered similar lag on Trial runs, especially with large Leagues, such as 24 man BAF runs. On smaller Leagues, those with less than 20 people, lot less trouble. There's still some lag with the powers, but not the situation where stuff like your Mez protection click is taking longer to fire than it's duration.

This makes me think there's something with the League system that's causing this lag. Because everyone on the raid had the exact some problem, and when we broke it, everyone said things ran smoothly. I hope this helps bring this problem to the dev's attention and it gets fixed soon.
  3. My guess here is that you're attacking a group of enemies. The location AoEs like Rain of Fire, Frozen Rain, Ice Storm, Sleet, etc, seem to roll if they're going to hit or not in a round, and then roll if they're going to hit each guy. And since the Rains make numerous attacks a tick, you get a wall of misses.

Or something like that. It's odd. Rains have odd mechanics.

    Death penalty

Like others have said, a lot of these are really rough on newer players who are still learning how to play (my first character in CoH was a blaster I solo'd to 30. And I hadn't learned about "Fitness" until around, oh, level 25 or so. I died a lot), people who solo a lot, squishies, and when you run into rough content. I mean, can you imagine if our enhancements all degraded with each death and running the Apex, especially when it first came out and we were all "Holy crap, that blue stuff HURTS!" and were still figuring out how to not die? It'd suuuuuuuuck (for reference, the Apex is one of my favorite TF's in the game).

I admit that things like decreasing equipment durability/performance and the constant money sink of repairing all your stuff is a major turnoff for me. It's a game mechanic that always annoys me, since durability degradation always seems to be based around your gear being made of paper.

Heck, just playing a squishy period would be a nightmare. Squishies are squishy and blasters are called the Floor Inspectors Union Local 437 for a reason. Now imagine if every time you got splutted, your enhancements decreased in power and you had to pay to repair them. Or you had to run back into the enemy filled area and retrieve your carcass. Or you had a long lasting debuff that seriously nerfed your ability to be useful. It'd be un-fun.

I joined the game around Issue 12, so I didn't see this myself, but I'm told that back in the day XP Debt could pile up to the point that you'd have to repay multiple levels of debt. I like the way it is now, where it's at most a minor inconvenience and a way for the game to say "Try not to do that again," plus a way to get progress on badges. Works pretty well, I think.

    That would be awesome.

Judging by the little video of Steam Jump in action, it reminds me a bit of the Jump Pack inherent power from the Good vs. Evil edition of the game. You hit jump and you move in kind of one direction since it only enhances your jump height but not horizontal motion. With this, you hit Steam Jump and you move into the air at 45 or so degrees... and I've got this weird feeling that with Steam Jump, landing might consist of getting more or less over where you want to be and then taking your finger off the space bar, making you drop down on it.

Which sounds like a fun way to travel.

A detail I also noticed was that when they were discussing the Steampunk Rifle, they said weapons. Plural. Maybe there's more than just the Rifle in there, but potentially other steampunk weapons like, I dunno... pistols, blades, axes, or hammers (though the Wrench is already pretty steampunk)? Bows? What would a steampunk bow be, anyways? Some kind of pneumatic assisted harpoon launcher?

    New zone?!

While I'm sure it ties into the ongoing story somehow, and will in all likelyhood be a co-op zone... I am secretly hoping the zone is "Boomtown is being invaded by giant radioactive ants with laser eyes! Use the [Buick] power to defeat them!"

Because that'd just make my day. About 50 of my days. Consecutively.

So... you hate every single contact in the game? I mean, they've not been built up either. And the police scanner and newspaper. I mean, why should you listen to them? And that guy getting mugged in the street, screw him. Bob's not gotten built up either, so you're not going to wander by and save him.

    Yeah.
  10. Okay, I'm seeing some people with the badge and little robots and whatnot, but a lot of people also don't have it, myself included. I KNOW my account hasn't gone inactive once between February and now, because I bought six months of time. What's up?

Now I'm imagining the Rikti going around with Team Fortress 2 Spy style paper facemasks.
  12. Wow. You're doing a heck of a job with the details on the robot there.

Upstart's arrest is always going to be 'a few months ago' whenever the arc is played. Are there enough of these references to justify an alternative 'relative' timeline giving dates as '6 weeks ago' or 'last year'?
That's a tough one. I think it is supposed to be still 2011 in City of Heroes, as the opening of the Hero 1 time capsule was a date-specific event, which means the Rikti War was nearly ten years ago (something to think about with younger heroes is that they might've been kids during the invasion). I tend to just go with the kind of fuzzy, sliding chronology of comic books at times to handwave that.

Something I'm wondering about is what year the Nuclear 90 are supposed to have been born in. I always kind of figured it was 1986, the same year as the Chernobyl disaster.

So basically all it does is break your offensive toggles and stuff... which actually isn't that bad. Might want a bit more of a warning, but none of my teams have ever had too much trouble with that. I do kind of wonder on the range of that thing. It almost seems to be a line of sight power, as in everyone within a direct path of Monty gets hit. Makes sense for a power like that.

Though despite his AoE uberstun, he's not that bad. It's a really short stun that at most disrupts your debuff toggles. I think it might be less than 5 seconds even. It's too short for the rest of the enemies to beat you down.
  17. I have a question. We hear the mention of the "Nuclear 90" as a group of 90 children born around the world in a single year who all have a similar mutation that turns their hearts into natural fusion reactors. Fusionette is the one we hear about the most, and more than a few players have used this idea as backstories for their own characters. What year were the 90 all born in?

Judging by Fusionette, I'd place her at somewhere in her mid-20s, so my personal guess is 1986... since this also, by happenstance, lines up with another nuclear event, but that's my guess. Anyone know the actual date?

It should be mentioned that his first act when appearing to save the day was preventing the destruction of the Challenger space shuttle and the deaths of its crew, an act he had spent his entire life preparing for and was sent back through time to do. By stopping the disaster, he eliminated the timeline he came from. He's also stuck with the question of "Okay, now what do I do?" with his mission accomplished. Astro City is a great series like that. Read it.

Plus, I think Siege should sound like ED-209:

Siege: Put down your weapons. You have twenty seconds to comply. You are in violation of penal code 6-14 Section 5 regarding the use of super powers against praetorian property. You now have 10 seconds to comply. Five... Four... Three... Two... One. I am now authorized to use physical force.

And then he should Full Auto everyone.
I'm never going to be able to listen to Marauder again without him sounding like Randy Savage. Which makes the start of Praetorian characters really weird.

Of course, I also imagine the Well of the Furies sounding like Tony Jay from Legacy of Kain...

My idea was more of a task force fight. You and your 7 buddies fight your way up his tower to confront him in his throne room. Over the course of the battle, in the background and distance you can see IDF War Walkers and Vanguard HVACs duking it out, and so forth, and as you fight him, the tower around you is falling apart. Kind of like how in the Silver Mantis Strike Force as you take out the Sky Raider base's turrets, the base becomes increasingly on fire. With this, as you bring Tyrant's HP down to certain tiers, more of the surrounding tower and throne room collapses around you due to the absolutely titanic energies being thrown into battle. By the time you're done, everything above the throne room is simply gone and you're standing amidst the wreckage. Heck, if possible, you're standing in a crater where the tower once stood.

There should be a real feel of storming the castle where YOU are the hero, or in the case of villains, not taking too kindly to some jerk deciding he doesn't like how you operate.

Just don't feel two dozen people dogpiling him feels as awesome as an eight man team (like how in Justice League, the 8 person League took on Luthor-Braniac).

I tried to ask about this at PAX East but muddled it (you can see me botching that at the Q&A).
