I don't know how much slotting I'm supposed to give to my control powers, but I do know that by the time I have enough spare to slot my attacks I'd have lost interest in the character twice-over.
Interestingly I'm the opposite: I like playing Controllers, and fighting fewer things of a higher level, mostly because I want to know where everything is and what everything is doing. Fighting fewer enemies makes me feel better, or rather neater, than blasting lots of enemies all over the place. (Higher levels is just for a better rate of XP.)

I can't play Dominators because they feel like less effective Controllers. I keep expecting Containment to go off (possibly doesn't help that my first Controller to 50 was Illusion/Radiation), and I keep wondering where my debuffs are.

Domination falls under my problem with Inspirations: I don't do well under pressure, since I panic easily, and I always forget that I have Domination built up. I've tried firing it off whenever I have it (assuming there are enemies in sight, of course), but I keep feeling that I'm wasting it, when I could be saving it for a boss or something. Of course, when I fight a boss, I don't use it, in case there's a stronger boss fight coming up soon.

To bring it back to the topic, an entire AT is, if not killed, then at least discouraged for me, due to the AT power.

Also, I'm really tired of villainside contacts treating me like dirt. At least heroside, even if they send you on the same sort of missions, are polite about it.

Maybe I'll try a Dominator again for GR.

It's a very common response whenever I try to roll a Blaster.

"Hey, I'd like to roll a Blaster to try getting it to 50, but I solo exclusively. How are Blasters solo?"

"They're great! You have to be a bit more careful, but Blasters can definitely solo well."

    *some time later*

"Hey, so based on your recommendations for a good solo secondary, I picked Mental Manipulation, and I'm not sure how Drain Psyche works. It doesn't seem all that impressive."

"Are you hitting groups of enemies with it?"

"I'm not jumping into groups of more than three enemies at once, if that's what you're asking."

    "Why not?"

"Because I get hit by all of them and die."

"You shouldn't be. What's the Tanker doing?"

    "I'm solo. No Tanker."

"Solo? Why are you playing a Blaster solo? Go play a Dominator."

It happened several times. I don't really know why.
  5. Part of why I continue subscribing is because of the introduction to the costume creator I got, when a friend (who left the game) showed me the customization options. This was back in Issue 2.

"How well can it make a Magical Girl?" I asked.

As it turned out, the answer was not very well. But I figured that maybe I should try the game out anyway.

Issue 4 brought some hope, but not all the costume pieces fit that well. Issue 6 with CoV was a little too skulls-and-spiky, but at least it had more options. More costumes, booster packs, so on and so forth.

I still can't make the magical girl characters I want to make, but it always seems to be getting there with every other costume update. So I subscribe to be able to post on the official forums for More Frills, More Lace, More Skirts.

Also, the global chat system. I play this game now as a single-player game with an inbuilt IRC client, just the way I wanted.

That's kind of why I like anime so much, though - even when it doesn't make sense, it still makes sense. And anime writers and especially artists don't seem to be in any way restricted by concepts like good taste, modesty, restraint or marketability. Sure, it produces a LOT of crap (I still have nightmares about Puni Puni Poemi...), but it also produces a lot of VERY inspiring, very original, very fun work.
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (literally Beat-to-death Angel Dokuro-chan) is a gag series (well, gag OVA, not even a full series), so it's not supposed to be coherent or sensible. It is presumably supposed to be funny, although humour is subjective. Then again, it was successful enough to spawn a few extra episodes.

Basically, like a lot of other storytelling media, it's not easy to generalize past the basics (anime has to be mostly, if not entirely, animated, for instance). For some series, be it for humour or Artistic purposes, things aren't supposed to make sense, and they consistently fail to make sense.

For most others, they try to tell a story in a more conventional way, and how much sense it makes is... well, you could compare Star Trek to Smallville to Lost to Heroes to Babylon Five to Chuck to whatever in terms of plot coherency, and it would be as useful as generalizing anime. (Possibly more useful, since the listed shows are mostly in the same genre of speculative fiction.)

As with most works of fiction, the most the creators can do is to come up with ways, however desperate or patchwork, to explain new developments consistently and coherently with old ones, as soon as they think about it. The deeply-thought-out list of traits and limitations of a given fictional system seldom survive contact with the audience, in much the same way it is assumed that the developers will never find every exploit at the same rate as the players.

Or they could just go "don't think too closely about it", which is more or less giving up in exasperation, because they don't think it matters that much.

    So far.

I assume that we haven't seen any alternate Recluses because there haven't been any stories which needed to feature an alternate Recluse. A meta-reason of narrative convention and convenience, rather than something deeper. You could say that each server shard is a different reality (or set thereof), after all.

I'm still not quite convinced of the existence of a story bible that is anything more than maybe a collection (a large collection, it must be said) of random disorganized notes.

I think I first got the impression that it was an actual physical object when Mark Waid (who (co-?)wrote the first three Top Cow CoH comics) mentioned in an interview (about said CoH comics) that the story bible "broke the table" when presented to him.

After that, my impressions of it morphed and changed due to various dev comments about how they didn't think of something or other (eg the infamous Dominatrix/Tyrant relationship thing), and now I'm not sure if it's a story bible that has the One True Canon, or just a huge collection of bits and scraps of what-if.
  9. When I hit level 50 on the character, and finish off any arcs in progress.

EATs are considered New Game Plus content (hard mode). New characters are, well, new games.

    I believe in replayability.

I figure that the dimensional naming scheme is basically Greek Greek Number-Number, which for some reason gets used a lot in pop science/pseudo-science, as well as military/spy thriller codenames and book titles. I know the Greek letter naming gets used often in actual science (but probably not as much as fiction would have us believe); I have absolutely no idea if this is also the case in the spy business.

Malta names tend to be Codename Codename Number-Number, or even just Codename Codename (I think happens a few times). It probably draws on the military/spy thriller stuff more than anything.

    So I do think it's a coincidence.

As for why Portal Corp. portals continue to only place people back onto Earth? I really think you folks are getting waaaaaay too complicated with this variety of comic book physics.
I always assumed that it's because we don't see the stories where the portals place people elsewhere. I know the meta-reason is limited storytelling tools, but... actually, I've kind of lost track of how meta we are now.

What if all of the various "realities" or dimensions occupy the same space? We are unable to see them, because we (and everything else) are out of phase with the other dimension. They "vibrate" or oscilate or do the macarena in a different way, and therefore are invisible. Perhaps, the Portals don't "move" you at all... but instead simply change your "phase" so that you can react to the new dimension properly. Could it be, then, that the designation, is instead a "modulation" that tunes one to a universe's frequnency?
In which case we may or may not have to bring up how Phase Shift works in the game, since I think the handwavey explanation is that it shifts us just out of phase like how you mention, and apparently all Phase Shifts shift us out of phase in the same way, or at least to the same frequency.

I'm going to assume that this is sarcasm, because part of what I keep hearing is a good point about this game is that teams don't need to diversify to work, as opposed to what I think goes like "healer tanker DPSer" or something.

There's also "talk to someone" (or something). Fedex missions to contacts are basically this, but there's also the option for "failure", which so far is basically just "go back one dialogue screen and try again". We see this in the arcs to get into the Midnighter Club with a password. However, I accept that this can be seen as a variation of "click glowie".

There's also "escape mission instance", where the "glowie" to be clicked (eventually) is the mission door.

Also, putting out fires, which falls under "defeat enemies", since we're "defeating" the "fire" critter using a special temp power (or ice attacks); this could be expanded to, say, "clean up the toxic sludge with this special spray chemical".

I've hit the ignore list limit several times, on several characters.

All of it was due to RMT spammers. I don't bother putting actual players on the list (never did start, but I suspect sooner or later I would have) because I know that in a few months' time they'll have scrolled back off.

It's been a while, so I might be misremembering, but I think the main reason I noted it down as "an example of the Vocal Minority" is because the people who caused the big uproar were outnumbered population-wise by the people who either liked the Katamari Damacy reference or didn't care, but the volume of text written decrying the reference was substantial, per actual poster.

I think it was something along the lines of the "defend my views from all comers" mentality. Because they had to respond to each (although probably not every, since that would be nigh-impossible) disagreement sent their way, their posts and wordcount went up.

We can see this sometimes in various heated forum debates: quite often, there is just one person with a contrary view to the others, and they respond to everyone else one at a time, due to the nature of forum posting. More "vocal", in that they post more (due to responding more), but still a numerical minority.

Note that I am not judging whether a viewpoint is correct or incorrect based on whether it is held by the majority or minority. I have to put it in bold because I seem to cause people to skip over bits of my posts, and then yell at me for things I already mentioned.

So, while I have experienced being classified as a member of the Vocal Minority when I disagree with someone else, this is not always the case. It doesn't seem to happen in the majority of the cases for me, but then we're already into anecdotal evidence anyway.

It's basically romantic comedy, with the romance and the comedy relatively segregated in the style of lots of shoujo manga. The first couple of episodes were fairly standard setup, but after you know who the main characters are and what they act like, the story settles into... well, romantic comedy.

It doesn't do anything hugely new, but what it does it does very well. Assuming you like shoujo romantic comedy (eg Ouran High School Host Club), anyway.
  22. I wanted to high-five Dean, but I couldn't in the end, because I picked the other conversation option: not the "I refuse to high-five you" one, but the "what happened?" I was thinking of getting the important questions out of the way first, and then I'd high-five him when it was clear that it wouldn't be a premature celebration. I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't do that.

Like Sam Tow, my first impression of Dean was a strange urge to punch him in the face; he reminded me so much of Willy Wheeler, and I was pretty irritated by how that one went down. But after I talked with him some more (the early clincher was "so what did your clone look like?", which actually did make me laugh), and learned his backstory, I found myself warming up to him. He's still irritating, and he still needs to work on his flirting technique (or lack thereof), but it's a sort of irritation between friends now, rather than the I KEEL YOU sort.

The writers did a great job of making Dean a character, rather than a cutout: he didn't need to go through character development or anything; all of it was just me learning more about him, and getting used to him, to turn my opinions around.

About the clone: I almost missed it, mainly because I looked at the timer, looked at the fires, went "oh gods I'm going to die", and hit Flight. It was the speech bubble which caught my attention.

I saved my clone because, well, it's intelligent enough to talk to me, intelligent enough to call out for help, and it wouldn't have taken long for me to rescue the clone. Most of my redside characters (including the one who actually played through the arc) aren't really villains anyway (or at least not outright evil).

And I didn't rob the bank because I found it hilarious to just saunter in, ask for a money transfer, and leave, entirely legally. It would be completely unexpected from the point of view of the civilians, which would help with a reputation for unpredictability.

Most of my characters, blueside and redside, have a common character trait, which is overwhelming curiosity: they would see what there is to be seen, and learn what can be learned. (The difference between blueside and redside is in what direction this learning takes.) So I let my clone free, on the condition that it told me what it wanted to do. When it said it wanted to learn about the world, hell yes I was letting that clone go with my blessings.

I suspect just about every one of my villains (except those I don't bother playing anymore) will be Going Rogue.

CuppaJo then posted the King's opening speech from Katamari Damacy more or less verbatim.

There was an even bigger uproar over CuppaJo "not taking this seriously".

To be fair, the majority of the posts were of appreciation for both the removal of the star system and the humour in the Katamari Damacy reference. It was just one of the more illustrative examples of the concept of the Vocal Minority that I'd seen.
