Wow, that's a complicated one. Try rebooting in case it's a stuck "wineserver" process. If that doesn't work, try emailing support, they have a couple of things you can try.
-
You might have to delete all your Safari preferences. They're in (youraccount) Library > Safari and (youraccount) Library > Cookies.
That should re-set Safari back to its "factory" condition. If that doesn't work, Apple Support or the Genius Bar at an Apple Store should be able to help you. -
Since you have another user account the fix should be relatively easy. Select your new user folder and use the Get Info command on the File menu. Expand the Sharing and Permissions section and write down the way it looks.
Then use Get Info on your old user folder, and set the permissions to look the same, only for that particular user instead. Then click the widget at the bottom and select Apply to Enclosed Items. There will be a delay while this occurs.
Incidentally, if you want to share your iTunes music, try this: Drag the Music folder out of the user folder and to the hard drive. Change its permissions to match those of the hard drive, using the procedure above. Then go to iTunes Preferences > Advanced and change the iTunes Music folder location to the new location. -
For Safari try this:
1. Make sure Private Browsing isn't turned on.
2. Open Preferences, go to Security and set Accept Cookies to Always.
3. Click Show Cookies and type cityofheroes.com in the search blank at the top. Delete all cookies from cityofheroes.com.
4. Try to log in again. -
A few hours ago I installed Snow Leopard, so I ran some tests with CoH:
I tried the Live client first. It's quite a bit laggier in certain areas in Snow Leopard, but otherwise behaves just like it did in Leopard. It works, though, and performs well enough until Issue 16 comes out.
The Training Room client is a newer version of Cider than the Live client, and it shows. Performance is much smoother, and aside from fixes for a bugs I reported in the Issue 16 Open Beta forums, I'm eager to see this one go Live.
As for Snow Leopard itself, it's a very smooth install, but scary at one or two moments if you aren't paying attention and didn't expect a sudden reboot.
Also as an aside, if you're thinking of booting Snow Leopard on a non-Apple computer:
1. I don't condone downloading hacked versions of Snow Leopard to accomplish this, and it'll likely be broken by Apple at the first software update.
2. If you use a Chameleon related EFI boot device, I haven't yet seen any definite postings about it working with Snow Leopard.
3. EFI-X doesn't support Snow Leopard at all currently, and when they do, it'll only be with their latest product, meaning everyone who bought version 1 has to come up with $230 to upgrade. Contrary to rumors, there is no trade-in program. -
All that info should be referenced in the CoH Mac guide linked in my signature.

Try downloading the CoH Test Server client from here:
ftp://client.coh.com/Test/US/
Start a patch first (there's a reason for that) but then Quit.
Then copy your EU version's Piggs folder and CityOfHeroes.exe into Contents > Resources > transgaming > drive_c > coh.
There's a chance that the files are supposed to be in drive_c > Program Files > City Of Heroes, check both folders to see which one has more than just cohupdater.exe (that's why you started the patch first above). If that's true, move the Piggs and CityOfHeroes.exe there instead.
After that there will only be a small amount of patching, and you'll be done. -
I have Snow Leopard on order (scheduled to be delivered on the 28th) and I'll test CoH both on Live and the Training Room as soon as Snow Leopard is installed.
-
You can follow the instructions in the Mac Guide to copy your EU game files to the Mac version. But with two differences:
1. Save the cohupdater.exe in the "coh" folder - if you overwrite it, the client will break.
2. You'll still have to do some patching, since there's a version difference between the two clients, and since CityOfHeroes.exe is different for the EU version.
The "pigg" files should be the same, which is the bulk of the game files, so you'll still save some time with patching.
Also, you might not get access to the Training Room right away, as trial accounts may take up to 48 hours to activate there (they activate on live servers right away). -
If you have a lot of crashing issues, contact Support. They have a few troubleshooting procedures that might help.

I've been in touch with a few people already who have the desire to make Mac replacements for various 3rd party tools, but so far they either haven't had the time, or have lost the will, or simply left CoH. It's quite an accomplishment already that we got a Vidiotmaps installer about the same time as the CoH for Mac release.
At one time, I was certain that CoH would never be available as a native Mac game, but in time I was thankfully proven wrong. I learned from that, and now I won't say there will never be a hero planner or demoplay tool for Mac. It could very well happen, it's just not imminent.
Your Toshiba Vista disc won't work because Boot Camp specifies that you need a packaged retail CD (ordering an OEM disc in a package will work) rather than a manufacturer's restore disc or upgrade disc.
And yeah, that stupid rep thing, I hope the forum mods finally remove that feature from the boards. It's the electronic equivalent of throwing rotten tomatoes, and who brings rotten vegetables to a message board anyway?? -
There are several issues at work here:
1. Those extra pieces of software you mention are *not* made by Paragon Studios. They have no obligation to update them or support them. And they couldn't if they wanted to, since they don't own the code.
2. Those extras also are barely being developed for PC anymore. Mids was virtually abandoned for several issues (someone is rumored to be picking it up, but since they aren't being paid its subject to spare time restrictions), Demo Launcher hasn't been updated in a while either. Even the web-based ones are ancient. So it would be more correct to say Windows *had* all of those tools, past tense. It's going to be tough to convince a developer who virtually abandoned a Windows project to not only work on it again, but it add a Mac version.
3. Nobody pays developers of those tools, which is both why they aren't being developed further, and why there aren't any new Mac ones yet. With people being worked harder for less money these days, there isn't much spare time or incentive to spend dozens of hours writing software they won't be paid for. On top of that, hosting them so people can download them costs money many people don't have. -
E-mail Support, they have a procedure for flushing the caches that seems to solve this problem.
-
I don't really use Boot Camp anymore (I removed it with the Mac release of CoH) and I don't have any Macs with ATI, so I'm just guessing here.
Is there anything 3rd party installed like virus scanners that might be running in the background? Did you install any Apple updates like the Multi-Touch Update? Did the ATI drivers install correctly, and do they have settings that need adjusting? -
Did you install the Boot Camp drivers off of the Leopard CD (or download them from ATI)? The native Windows drivers don't really work all that well.
-
Star Trek Online and Champions Online are both developed by entirely different teams than City of Heroes. The decision to create a CoH Mac Edition was made by NCSoft Norcal (now Paragon Studios) so it wouldn't apply to any other titles made by NCSoft either.
For the City of Heroes Mac Edition, you can thank the hands-on Paragon Studios crew, Transgaming for making decent Windows/Mac translation software called Cider, and the highly involved Mac-based CoH player community who worked hard to squash a large portion of the bugs during beta testing. Without all three the Mac Edition wouldn't be what it is today. -
-
New forum broke it.
It's fixed now (except the boot camp guide is missing).
-
As at the Apple Store for sure (or the online one) but usually if you purchase Leopard close to the Snow Leopard release you get the upgrade for free. At least that's how it used to work.

All that kind of information is in my Mac guide, linked in my signature.

This is one problem that I was able to work around using a Vista fix in NC Support's knowledge base:
Drag the CohUpdater.exe to the desktop and double click it. When it asks you where you want to install, point it to your existing CoH install. Then throw out the CohUpdater.exe (the one on the desktop).
Doing that seems to bypass all the obnoxious Windows Firewall checks that slow down patch downloads and zone loads.
Hope that works for you too. -
The guide in my signature has some suggestions for smoother gameplay and less crashes - but they might not work if you're using Tiger.
-
The permissions issue is potentially caused by downloading/installing while not on an administrator account, or by installing it on an admin account and then patching it with a non-admin account.
-
Ok, I feel a little bad now because some people *were* trying to be helpful and I didn't express that I *do* appreciate the help. I'm sorry that help was overshadowed by my responses to people who insist that because it's working perfectly for them, the only possible conclusion is that I must be lying.
I also left out an important piece of information: I switched back to Vista not because I hated Windows 7 - the thought of switching back killed me - but because my first worry *was* that I had hardware going bad (video card, hard drive, or otherwise). I made the decision to install Vista again and see if the problems persisted, but they didn't. That's where I drew the line between a hardware and a software problem.
After that, I decided to stay with Vista for now because I was reluctant to reinstall Windows 7 and spend possibly weeks mucking around with it at this point, because, let's be honest, first installs of a new OS always involves weeks of mucking around until you can build an archive of good drivers and software - and then have the release candidate expire and have to do it all again.
And even if I do get Windows 7 working stable and well-behaved, there's still that CoH patching issue not even NC Support knows how to fix yet. Which in itself is a big reason not to recommend Windows 7 to average players yet - there's not much support available right now.
As for some of the other points:
- The problems I had with Windows 7 were relatively minor, except for the CoH patching issue and the occasional hard crash. I probably could have tolerated them until fixes came along, but I already had installed Vista to make sure I didn't have a hardware issue so I may as well stick with it for now.
- There's a huge gap between "works out of the box" and "takes days of tinkering to get it to work, and even when you think it does, you have more tinkering to do". The latter is a huge pain and will reduce anyone not familiar with troubleshooting and PC's to tears. At the very least, Windows 7 should aim somewhere in between, hopefully closer to works out of the box. Ironically, the fact that so many people offered me driver help, no offense, points the release candidate more toward the tinkering side right now.
- Microsoft does hear about problems I've encountered.
- I do agree that Windows 7 is close enough that it doesn't need *drastic* changes to alleviate the issues I have, meaning the build being printed on CD's for sale might have already fixed them. Unfortunately, I won't have one until November.
- The only bullying I referred to is the person who added a rather disrespectful and immature "tag" to this thread (see the bottom of the thread when reading it), and the ones who voted and gave me a negative forum rep, complete with rude comments. It's the internet equivalent of throwing rotten vegetables. -
Quote:You still missed the point. My point is, based on my experience I wouldn't recommend it. Since I don't work for NC/Paragon Studios, or Microsoft, feel free to take it with any doze of salt you wish. It's a free country. And yet many people with systems and hardware much like yours are having no problems with 7 and CoX. I'm certainly not, CoX has been rock solid for me on both the beta and RC1, and the only drivers I've downloaded outside of Windows Update are for my printer and the NVidia drivers.
Anecdotal evidence is still anecdotal.
Whether or not I'm alone with these issues is irrelevant, because chances are I'm not completely alone, and now anyone else who has problems with Windows 7 will be terrified of posting here. So if the point of the Technical Issues forum is to sweep any problems under the rug, label anyone who says otherwise as crazy or stupid, and pretend everything is working great, then mission accomplished. A big round of applause on that one.
I posted observations. As I've said before (and I don't know why I have to repeat it) I'm not against Windows 7 - it's these kinds of observations that hopefully get Microsoft and the vendor drivers to work better at some point. Sticking your head in the sand and telling everyone else to keep quiet, or bullying them into silence, is not going to improve anything.
Btw, I've seen the thread tags, and I turned off my Forum Rep because of the results of this thread. It's called BULLYING, and it's not cool.
