    Because it's a significant change.

It'd be kind of a dick move to say: "Oh, we completely changed your powerset, but if you want to change it you better have a respec banked. We don't care if it broke your character, you aren't getting the opportunity to change it unless you earn it."

More to the point: They've handed out freespecs when there was LESS of a change happening than one powerset getting revamped.

I don't remember an issue release that didn't have one.

Far too many things are being changed to not give us one. Possibly up to 3.

With new powers in travel pools and APPs being available 6 levels earlier, that is going to change things for a LOT of characters.

I will be absolutely shocked if we DON'T get at least one freespec in i21.

    Yep.

VIP is just what they're calling what everyone is now (everyone not playing on a trial acount at least)

If you stop paying, you'll lose access to some of the features, but you'll still be able to play the game. Which is much better than how it is currently. Currently, if you stop paying, you lose access to the game altogether.

    Yes.

Alpha powers work just like an SO.

If the power will accept an SO of the type the Alpha enhances, whatever effect that SO has on the power is enhanced by Alpha.

I saw your second post, I was just clarifying it for the benefit of anyone who stumbled on the thread with the same type of question.

Depends on whether you plan on ever exemping the character in question though.

The ones I have set up with the uniques in PP I almost never exemp with.

Sounds like you're confused between Physical Perfection and Conserve Power.

Physical Perfection is an autopower, and as such won't even accept recharge reductions. Conserve Power only gives you an endurance discount, which you can't slot for, so all it will accept is recharge reductions.

A lot of people use Physical Perfection for someplace to put the Heal set uniques (Numina's, Miracle, Regenerative Tissue), or a Performance Shifter Chance for +End.

    Rule of 5

You can slot as many purple sets as you have powers that will take them, you just won't get more than 5 of the same bonuses if they're duplicated.

I have tried to duplicate that feat with both my Dark/Fiery Brute and my SS/Fiery Brute to little success. It seems in order to max fire resist as a Brute I must take Temperature Protection. Or do I?
Brutes have the same caps as tanks, but their base values are 25% lower. That means you have to work harder to hit some of the caps. And some you won't be able to hit at all. I've heard an Electric Armor tank can cap S/L resistance as well as Energy via Cardiac, but I don't believe a brute can do the same at all.

He can be exceptionally difficult with melee characters if you don't have enough damage output to drop him before he gets a few clones out.

He's a piece of cake with ranged characters. Pop enough Lucks to soft-cap and kill the bifurcations as they spawn (easier on ranged characters because you don't have to travel as far to hit them), and hit Trapdoor himself between bifurcations.

    Trials too easy?

It is much better to make the Trials "Difficult, but easier with practice" than it is to make them "Hair-rippingly, frustratingly difficult, but possible with practice"

They got easier because we learned how to beat them.

Remember when LRSF was called "too hard"? What about the STF? The ITF was deemed too hard. So were Kahn and Barracuda. Apex and Tin Mage were called WAY too hard.

What do all those things have in common nowadays? They are nothing more than business as usual now.

Every new thing introduced to the game was called too hard by some of the population. Now even the least skilled players know how to go about beating those tasks with relative ease.

If they had made the trials as difficult as they would have had to have been in order to STILL be challenging, it would have been an entirely different problem.

Or when the devs run a name-freeing script, which basically goes: All character names under X level on inactive accounts are available IF someone wants it. If no one wants the name, it stays on the character.

When they ran it the first time, they set it to characters under level 35. They discovered that the VAST majority of the names freed up that way were under level 6, so the second time they set it to level 6. They've only run it twice that I know of.

I doubt they will be running another one of those anytime soon though, since after Freedom goes live ALL accounts will technically be "active accounts".

    They can't.

The word "abomination" is public domain. The only way they could get in trouble is if the character himself bears a significant resemblance to Marvel's Abomination. Just from looking at the screenshot.....he doesn't.

    News from PAX

I have to chuckle at all the demands for realistic barbarian costumes in a game that is based on a genre of entertainment which is not known for realistic outfits on any of the characters in it.

And defining "realistic" barbarian outfits as "you know, a chainmail bikini like Red Sonja wears" is even funnier.

A "realistic" barbarian outfit, for either gender, would consist of poorly tanned hides and a few scraps of cloth attached with rawhide stitching. And footwear? It would be A) Nothing, B) some really badly chafing sandal-type things, or C) some scraps of cloth tied around your feet (mostly worn in winter time) MAYBE you'd see some fur boots, but they'd look like crap.

The simple fact is: Barbarians were not known for their tailoring skills.

I agree that a fur loincloth should be available for both genders, though.

It's not so much just WoW as it is the fact that MMOs generally tend to have a few unwritten rules in their design.

If you understand WoW, then Guild Wars, LotR,, Lineage, and any number of fantasy based games will all be easy to pick up. They mostly all have some form of the trinity, in which there is one class that keeps agro, one that deals damage, and one that focuses on healing the one taking the agro. Most of those games also have gear which directly increases your abilities and can be out-leveled. A lot of them are also difficult in that you can only fight a few enemies at a time with a good chance of winning. many of them also require very strict strategies in a given encounter.

CoH discarded a lot of those "rules" and it can be confusing to people who are used to the more standardized MMOs. CoH is a lot more relaxed most of the time, and there isn't any particular formula you have to stick to when building a team.

You CAN play CoH like those other games, there's nothing stopping you from doing so, but when you forget what you know about those games and approach this one with an open mind, you'll find that there is a lot more leeway in what you can do here.
  16. When there's a Claws on your team, you get......well, a Claws on your team.

I'll leave it up to you to decide if that's good or bad.

("Claws" as in "my forum handle's shortened version", not the powerset)

    This is sound advice here.

If you use an AoE attack that costs 10 end to defeat a foe with a sliver of health left, it would make more sense to wait a couple seconds to hit the enemy with an attack that uses 4 end.

1 end reduction in your attacks is good. 1 end reduction in most toggles is good.

But, if you are not slotting your attacks for accuracy and damage that end reduction is wasted. It doesn't matter if your attacks use less end if you have to use twice as many of them to win a fight.

    Bingo.

This was very much a case of "I'm right, nothing you say will convince me otherwise, and you're all stupid for not seeing how right I am."

And it got every bit of derision it deserved.

  20. Things Newbs Need to Know:

    1) Your experience as a level X class Y in game Z........means nothing here.

    2) You do NOT know how this game works just because you know how that other game works. (see #1)

    3) The Holy Trinity is not needed here.

    4) If someone offers you advice, they're probably just trying to help. No need to get mad at them for "telling you how to play."

    5) It's only a game, relax and enjoy it.

SR for tanks, if it follows the same values as Shield on defense numbers, and Invuln on the passive numbers (as compared to scrappers and brutes) will soft-cap with no IOs or extra powers at all.

JUST slotting the toggles and passives should put you at 47% or so.

If that's true, and I believe it will be, focus your slotting and power choices on things that will increase damage output, recharge, and Max HP.

If Tanker SR will softcap without any extra powers or IOs, maybe adding Assault would be viable.

I would DEFINITELY go Soul Mastery for this build. I have a DM/SR brute and Gloom is really nice for the ST DPS it adds, and Dark Obliteration is a not-too-shabby AoE as well.

The best part of SR for tanks is you don't have to worry about soft-capping at all, so you can focus 100% of your build goals on other things.
  23. Here's a quick build I threw together for you.

It's got the basics covered: soft-capped, decent recharge (without using purples), Max HP bonuses. It's also relatively cheap, most of the expensive stuff in it you can get with merits of some kind.

  24. You're very unlikely to get any directions to farms in this thread.

Blatant farming missions tend to get shut down, so people won't publicly tell you the arc ID because it will draw attention they don't want.

If I were you, I'd just make my own.
  25. Only damage breaks the fear, so if whatever you're doing deals no damage it won't break it.

Death Shroud will break it consistently, though.
