  1. I'm with Werner on this one. Those 4 pools are probably the best all around choices for a Regen.

Aid Self on a Regen is like taking Provoke on a Tank. Completely overshadowed by the powers already available to you.

Yeah, I don't fight much more than +2 uplevel very often. I can see accuracy being a problem with my build if you're fighting +4s.

I haven't been playing that toon very much lately, focusing instead on my Rad/Sonic Defender in PvP, and dusted off my main (Claws/Regen scrapper) for some TFs.

I'm not a big PvP guy, but it's fun now and then. Oh yeah, before the thought crosses your mind, no my BS/DA build does NOT do well in PvP. I've tried it, and it wasn't pretty, though it did do passably well against ranged attackers.

Thanks for this! I was having the same issue with Vista, Run as Admin fixed it.
  4. Well, I didn't roll him with PvP in mind. He's built for AV soloing, I just happened to wander into RV with him and discovered that he does pretty well.

    Thanks for the info.
  5. It's very difficult to get enough defense on a regen build to make ANY difference in PvP. Everyone and their grandmother is slotted for accuracy in order to hit the SRs and Shield toons running around, the defense you can muster on a regen won't even slow them down. I'm not saying ignore defense altogether, but it won't do as much good as you might think, especially with Diminished Returns.

I suggest taking the Fighting pool. In PvP Tough adds resistance to everything, which helps your regen and heals out by not asking as much of them, and it stacks with Resilience (which I suggest you take and slot a Steadfast Res/Def in). Weave is debatable, but I like it, and it gives you another place to put a LotG Recharge, which helps because you only have one spot available for it in your secondary (MoG). Between Weave, Combat Jumping, and whatever set bonuses you may have, you should be able to get enough defense to help a little, but I would definitely NOT shortchange the rest of Regen to focus on defense in PvP.
  6. I have a build that is a happy medium, but I also know the set pretty well. I know how to build for either high recharge or high defense, but I chose not to.

Werner and Umbral give good advice, I suggest you heed it until you have a better grasp of what Regen can and cannot do.

Why do I go against the grain and build almost the exact opposite of what I'm told I should? The answer can be found in my signature. I managed to get solid all around performance out of my Claws/Regen, in spite of my sub-par build. (at least I'm told it's sub-par) I can tank for short periods of time if need be, I kill at a decidedly above average rate, I can PvP when I feel like it and score a decent amount of kills. That's enough for me, I don't have any great desire to push this build as far as it can go, especially as I don't have the time or patience to acquire the ridiculously expensive IOs I would need to do it.

The only real advice I have here is to take the advice of the others in this thread, and use the parts of it that work for you. That's what I have done, and it led to a character that I'm very happy with.

    Focus Chi

I always take BU powers on scrappers. One simple reason: It's an awesome place for a set of Gaussian's that leaves me free to choose another Epic pool than Body.

For me, it's basically a set mule, but it's nice to have available if I want to hit something REALLY hard.
  8. DB Tank probably won't be soloing AVs at that budget. You could possibly build a Shield/DM or Shield/SS that could do it though.
  9. Just what the thread title says.

I know DR starts hittng you when you get the same thing from more than one source. So, in that case, do Rad's toggles have full power because it's all coming from one power?

Wondering because last night in RV my Rad/Sonic was absolutely untouchable against ranged attackers (I'm softcapped to ranged in PvE, so around 18% in PvP)

The way I have Radiation Infection slotted, it's debuffing to-hit by 48.68%. If that is not being hit by DR then it's a pretty substantial debuff.

The toon in question is awesome as a duelist, but if he fights more than one mezzer he gets in trouble quickly. Even though the mezzes don't last long, if even one lands he loses his debuff toggles. Planning on using him in tournaments and whatnot, as I'm happy with his performance 1v1.

Also, as a side question. Is an Ice/Rad corruptor still halfway decent in PvP or did the animation time thing kill their performance? I have a slot open on my home server and I'd like a ranged villain to play around with in RV. Or would I be better off reversing my defender and making a Sonic/Rad?

    moment of glory

I just have a single recharge IO in it at the moment. But, my build is more of an all around build and not specifically PvP. If I were to build just for PvP I would probably go 3 Rech and a LotG Recharge. Or a 4 piece of LotG in it, the End/Rech is dirt cheap most of the time.

(I ran out of slots because I took it at 49 on my current build)
  11. If I'm paying attention and on my game, my main is damn near unkillable. If I'm having an off day or get caught napping he has the consistency of tissue paper.

You HAVE to pay attention to your health bar at ALL times. It has the tendancy of not moving for long periods of time and then disappearing within a couple seconds, so if you're not watching it, you're dead or running and wondering where your health went.

It's a very active secondary, and your survivability with it is very much tied to your timing and reaction time with hitting the heals. I got the Master of STF badge the other night and I was very nearly the one who killed the attempt several times. Quick reactions and good timing kept me alive, at one point my health bar completely disappeared and I got out of there and hit all 3 heals at once. I was good for the rest of the fight (Aeon hits REALLY hard)

My regen has a pretty good build, but I have seen many that are much better. My survivability now came with a high price, I have all but the final debt badge, and have had since the mid 40's. Over that time I learned what I can and cannot handle. Now I can gauge how much damage I'm likely to take in just about any situation, just because I've been killed so many times.

If you like them I'm not going to stop you from taking them early, it's just my experience that other powers are more useful.
They also stack with the resistances in Unyielding, which is the same base as the passives to all damage types except Psi. So, around 22-23% or so between the two of them. Might soften the impact of some of the stuff that gets through.

Never actually figured it out, but it's enough to solo an AV, so I'm guesstimating 150+ or so. I know it's not too crazy high, but it kills at a reasonable pace, so I'm happy with it.

I know it's not all that high because the build has almost no global recharge in it. I'm okay with that though, the slower attack speed helps conserve endurance, which I still have slight issues with in long fights (I don't have the Miracle +Recovery in my live build yet, ran out of money)

Bobitron: The Stealth IO is in there so I can ghost in TFs, it's the lowest level one I could find, so Synapse and above I can ghost the boss kill missions, since I took Cloak of Darkness at 24 on my live build (decided I wanted Stamina earlier)
  14. I'm leveling one now, and it is the fastest solo leveler I've ever played, bar none.

I take Resilience at 20 (I usually don't have anything important to take then) and leave it unslotted until I manage to acquire a Steadfast Protection Res/Def, which is the best use for the power.

I put a set of Doctored Wounds in Instant Healing, I may swap it for a set of 4 Numina's for the HP bonus it gives. The heal enhancement isn't that important, but it's nice to have a power that can take another heal set for set bonuses.

Revive can be skipped altogether unless you happen to have a free pick at level 49 or something, don't bother slotting it, but you can throw an End Mod in the default slot. It's the most skippable power in the set.

Werner's Regen template is pretty spot on, I differ from it, but I know the set pretty well, and I know what works for me. His template is a good starting point for someone unfamiliar with the set.

Set bonuses to shoot for: Recharge, Positional Defense, Max HP (unless Dull Pain is perma) Recharge, oh, and RECHARGE.

I built my main a little goofy in comparison: Max HP, Regen, Recharge, and Defense are my priorities. I did it that way so that in most normal situations I don't need to use my click heals because my passive regen is quite high. It lessens the need for recharge, since I'm not using my heals as often, they're usually up when I need them. I don't recommend taking that path until you know what you're doing with the set a little better, I know my limits, so I very seldom exceed them. It leads to a character that is much more survivable than the raw numbers would indicate.

On the Fire side, I'd say Confront (naturally) and Breath of Fire are skippable. I say skip Breath of Fire because hopping out of melee to use a long root time cone attack isn't the best plan for a regen. If you need to hit a heal in the middle of that animation, you're screwed because it will queue up until the animation is done. The rest of the set is awesome and you should pick up everything if you can fit it in. If you must drop something, I recommend dropping Scorch.

Fighting pool is wonderful for a Regen. Fitness may or may not be necessary, though the higher your recharge gets, the more you will need end recovery as a general rule. Speed pool is great, Hasten is one of the single most useful pool power for a regen, and Super Speed is a decent travel power (I recommend taking Hasten even if you choose a different travel power

Leadership Pool is nice for Assault and Tactics (Maneuvers isn't that great for a regen, doesn't add enough with scrapper numbers), and Vengeance might be useful.

Stealth is nice if you can fit it in. It gives you 2 or 3 spots for LotG recharges if you have the space in your build. (you only get one spot for it in your secondary in Moment of Glory) Stealth and SS stack for true invisibility if you're so inclined.

Pools to avoid: Medicine, Presence, Teleport.

Medicine is a no-brainer, your heals are already way better than Aid Self, and are not interruptable. Aid Other can have it's uses, but you're a scrapper, not a defender or controller.

Presence isn't horrible, but there are WAY more useful options you can take.

Teleport is only useful for pulling, or retrieving teammates, unless you want Teleport as a travel power for concept.
  15. My softcapped BS/Dark waltzes through it with very little problem. The only time I drop is if stuff lands a few lucky hits in a row, or if I do something stupid. Spines/Dark would kill faster, but I'll take more survivability over increased kill speed any day, since the kill speed increase isn't THAT large.

A lot of Brutes at once is about the only thing that gives me trouble, and that's only if I miss with Parry more than once.

Panzerwaffen: The -recharge doesn't bother me that much. I have 3 layers of mitigation: Defense, Resistance (for what the defense doesn't prevent), and Dark Regen (which is not used that often due to the first two) One of the sword sets (Katana or Broadsword) would probably be a good bet for something like this.

My Claws/Regen can do it too, but he's nowhere near as good at it, and his build probably isn't as good as Catwhoorg's.

I'm all for a level cap increase if they did one, they have plenty of time to prep for the increase by fixing some of the problems.
Actually, the devs have said repeatedly that they're not raising the level cap past 50. What you may have heard is the rumor about "prestige slots" which allow you to power yourself up more, but don't actually increase your level. There are supposedly going to be 10 of these slots, so if you look at them as equaling a level, that's where they're getting the level 60 from.

Too many problems with increasing a level cap. First, it sets a precedent. If they do it once, when people rush to it and burn through all the new content, they'll have to do it again, and again, and again.

Second, all the top end enhancements will be made obsolete by now being 10 (or more) levels below the cap. So all those people who spent all that time tricking out their favorite characters will have to do it all over again with whatever they come out with to replace the good stuff.

There's other stuff too, but those two seem to be the most major concerns.

As far as the population question goes, between November and January or so there is usually a slump in activity while people are doing other things. With the holidays coming up people are spending time in the real world with family. There was a slump in late August too as a lot of the kids went back to school and couldn't spend all day playing anymore.

A lot of people I know are still playing, just not for as long at a stretch. Some did quit for other games, but that's normal and isn't having as huge an impact as some would lead you to believe.

    HI Pinnacle!

Welcome to Pinnacle. If you haven't joined PinnBadges yet...you should.

Pinnacle is the only server I play on at all, though I have a few lowbies scattered here and there on others (mostly so I can still play if Pinn crashes for some reason). I just like the community that much. Largely for the fact that when I spout some random nonsense in PinnBadges people just smile, shake their heads and go on about their business. Or they just shake their heads if what I said was really dumb.

My global is @Claws and Effect. If you happen to see me in Pinnbadges or hopping around the city, feel free to drop me a line and I'll be happy to run a few mishes or a TF if I have time. I play pretty often, but usually not for long stretches these days (damn that real life).

    Cheers

Take a few Break Frees and Heals and try and eliminate the surrounding mobs before engaging Frostfire.

BTW, my wife and I play on Pinnacle as well.
  20. The movement thing would be the least of my concerns as far as helping her goes. If it works for her, it's fine.

I'm a pure keyboard player, I only use the mouse when I'm forced to to click on someting or drop a patch power. Otherwise I set up my trays and use the number keys for my powers, with Alt+number for the second tray being the less used powers. I use the arrow keys for movement and my left thumb rests on the space bar, where it can easily hit the alt key for a tray 2 power. It works great for me, and I've been doing it so long now that it is instinctive.

My wife plays with WASD and the mouse, clicking the powers in her tray with the mouse as well. It seems awkward and clunky to me, but it is intuitive for her, so it's not even an issue. The only advantage my control style seems to have is in PvP, where reaction time matters, and since she doesn't PvP, it isn't a detriment to her.

Basically, be helpful, but keep your mouth shut as much as possible. Don't explain how every little thing works unless she asks. Be a resource instead of an instructor. There is a very high likelyhood she will not play the game the same as you, remember that SHE is playing and not you, Her way is the best way for her to play, not yours.

I sometimes forget that my wife is every bit as knowledgable about the game as I am, and put my foot in my mouth telling her something she already knew, or purposefully did differently. That ruins her enjoyment when she feels like I'm telling her how to play, and makes me feel like a jerk when I realize I'm being overbearing. Trust me, getting into an argument over a video game is about the dumbest thing ever, and it would behoove you to avoid it.

Blinding Feint from Dual Blades takes them as well. It is identical in function to Follow Up, and I believe the numbers are even the same.

Rage from Super Strength will take them, as will Invincibility (I think)

I would like to apologize on behalf of my server for someone being a jerk. We're really not all like that at all. You probably ran across one of our 1% complement of jackholes that exist everywhere. I'm 100% certain it was not me being a jerk, as I'm only rude to people who are rude to me first, and am much more likely to just ignore them, rather than stoop to their level.

I like Pinnacle enough that it is the only server I play on at all anymore. The community there is great, and if you join PinnBadges you should be able to find plenty to do most of the time. Joining is as easy as typing the channel name into the Join Channel window. You will have to ask an OP to be unsilenced, unfortunately a RMT spammer found the channel a while back and spammed ads for close to an hour straight before an OP logged in to kick him. So now everyone is silenced upon joining to prevent that from happening again.

I'm a little odd in that I LIKE less populated servers. I enjoy being able to do my own thing without being deluged with team invites and tells constantly, but knowing that there are teams available if I feel so inclined. If you want to be beating off team invites with a stick, you are better off on Freedom or Virtue.

I agree with Aett though, if you just want to level as fast as you can to play high end stuff, you will not enjoy yourself as much as you probably think. CoH is more about the journey, rather than the destination. There is not as much endgame stuff to do than you might think, since the journey to 50 IS the game, rather than the stuff you do to get to the game.

Don't take that as gospel though, I could be wrong.
  24. Fire/Fire really shines on a solid team with enough support to let you go bonkers and burn everything in sight. Soloing is more challenging, as you have to temper your berzerking to stay alive.

Fire/Mental has ranged AoE options, and is solid in melee as well. One of the better all around synergies IMO.

Fire/Ice will give you more survivability through mitigation, but won't have quite the damage output of the first two.

Fire/Devices is arguably (along with Ice) one of the most survivable builds, but it solos fairly slow, and the secondary won't bring much to the table in a team situation (not many teams have the patience for setting up traps)

Fire/Energy and Fire/Electric run neck and neck for me. Both will hit like trucks both ranged and melee. I lean more towards Electric because it has slightly more control options, and has Power Sink to keep you going like the Energizer bunny.

That's just my take on the various secondaries. None of them are bad, but some may fit your playstyle better than others.
  25. Yup, ran into the same thing this week.

I kept dying repeatedly because I was playing like an idiot and not having any fun. The dying was frustrating and led to me logging out in disgust. A couple days later I logged the same character in and played much more intelligently, died less, and had a lot more fun.

It mystifies me when I see people complaining that the game is too hard, or that the devs need to buff player characters to the point that dying is impossible. Why would you want a game that is THAT easy to play?

Pushing the same 5 or 6 buttons for hours on end with no thought involved would drive me absolutely bonkers. I rolled up another regen for exactly that reason. Your survival depends on you using your brain to determine the best time to use your heals, as opposed to SR or WP where you just pretty much wade in and trust your secondary to carry you through all by itself. Don't get me wrong, I like both of those sets, but there isn't much decision making going on while playing them.

Maybe it's just me, but I like things to be challenging but not impossible. Knowing that I could pull off a crazy feat if I use the right strategy or good timing retains my interest a lot more than just mashing buttons until I win.
