It's sort of hard to see in that image (click for full sized), but I'm sure that Rock Armour's visuals have changed with issue 20.
It looks far less bulky than it used to. You can sort of see it in the image I hacked together, but since I wasn't expecting this change, I didn't have any larger screens of my Stone/Fire tanker.
I can see my Shoulders through the Rock Visuals now and that was never the case, also he looks altogether far more.... anaemic that he used to, which is something I don't like, since Rock Armour's been effectively part of his costume since I got it at level 1 years ago
Brimstone and Crystal seem to be the same as before i20, from what I can tell.
Could some other Stone Armour players either confirm or deny what I think I'm seeing? Is it tied to being a minimum size normal body type, or is it more general? I've been to the tailors to make sure the body scaling hasn't changed and it hasn't, so he's still minimum height.
Help? -
Done three trials on live and did three on test. All of them Lambda, so I have nothing to say about the BAF.
Managed my first success on live tonight while 'leading' a 16 man raid (I say 'leading' as I tend to say what nees to be done, then leave it to people to do it, but I do shout a lot in the 'saying what needs to be done' phase)
My recipe for Lambda success tonight?
0) get the raid split into two vaguely balanced teams before starting Trial.
1) make sure everyone's using League chat.
2) remind people about the map option to show league members.
3) Clear all the way round (it's still early days, we want IXP and Threads, dammit!)
4) Clear the Courtyard (more IXP/Threads)
5) Clear the guns off the walls.
6) Beat up the Security Guard
7) STOP for 3 minutes and explain about glowies, ignoring mobs as much as possible, extra time for Acid+Grenade combos.
8) assign teams to acid or grenades
9) Press the go button for chaos by entering the lifts.
10) run around, hitting your team chat targeting bind on glowies
11) give the rest of the team/raid some credit for intelligence, so they'll likely be able to keep up and do what needs to be done without micromanagement.
12), 13) 14) faceplant a few times
15) once all the acid's been got (always seems to go faster than the grenades IME), head over to help with Grenades.
16) quick instructions on checking for temps, and getting acid onto portals. (Trading all acid/Pacifiers to teams leads seems needlessly complex to me, but if it works for you, then good.)
17) Chaos part 2. Acid on portals ASAP, then trim down excess aggro from weapon deliveries if you've got it, move on to Marauder.
18) Trim down his 'friends' before you start pacifying and hitting Marauder.
19) run round like headless chickens trying to shoot/slash/burn/freeze/irradiate/whatever Marauder whilst also trying to manage any aggro from weapon spawns and reminding melee to GET THE HELL AWAY FROM MARAUDER WHEN YOU SEE THE NOVA FIST WARNING.
20) shout for pacifiers when needed, almost run out, then drop Marauder while part of the league's off trying to get another grenade.
21) We win. Hurrah!
I quite like Lambda. It's straightforward enough when you know how it works, and if you don't, then it's easy enough to pick up.
Trying to 'lead' a trial and at the same time fight on a pretty damn squishy against Praetorians Katana/Regen Scrapper was probably the trickiest bit.
I reserve judgement on the BAF, as I've yet to run it.
Anyway, congrats to the people who attended the Lambda that I ran tonight on Union, and apologies for wall of text syndrome. -
Quote:Which trial? To add on the granite or not, doing the Trial yesterday, there you have serious no chance running outside Granite. Biggest issue there are the psi mobs, wich u could counter with your normal armors but all the SL/E damage comming in, but you have no where near the defenses to take such beating (apart the fact psi mobs also do fear).
Additionaly, rooted is one of the worst mez-toggles around, accidently using any power that removes rooted and you're fooked.
I had my Stone/Fire in Lambda on test and had no real trouble. 45% Capped S/L/E/N/Psi def, 40%S/L resis 50%F/C Resist.
I was stomping around taking out Containment Cylinders mostly solo. Taking alpha strikes from Praetorian spawns, and lasting long enough for the rest of the team (remember them? your teammates?) to come in and finish the job.
Did I have to use inspirations?
Yes, occasionally, mainly when Earths Embrace was recharging.
And regarding Rooted, if you've not learned yet not to go anywhere near Sprint, Ninja Run, Beast Run, Superspeed, Combat Jumping or any other travel power while you're Rooted, then you've not got enough practice on your stone tanker. I've only done that a couple of times and usually I've survived it by mashing inspirations until I got my sausage fingers untangled enough to get back into Rooted and things under control once more.
Disclaimer : I've NEVER liked seeing perma-Granite stone tankers. The armour set is called Stone Armour, not Granite Armour. Ignoring most of the set in favour of one power that comes with significant drawbacks seems the most inflexible approach to playing the set that I can think of. -
A Scrapper can go from 'cold' to full damage on their first attack. This is a good thing if you've got a problematic mob in a spawn that absolutely positively has to go the the Zig NOW. There's a Sapper? Build up, Soaring Dragon, Golden Dragonfly. I see no Sapper.
A Brute takes a little while to get up to speed (Unless they've got the Villain Alignment power, which means instant 100% Fury <grin>), but is more robust due to higher HP and higher Resist caps (if you can get anywhere near them). The slightly slower start can make it interesting if your first spawn includes a troublesome mob, but once you're rolling then you're golden, assuming you've got your endurance under control.
A Scrapper only gets the aggro they want (barring sets with taunt auras like Invuln/WP/Shield, and those sets WANT the mobs sround them for the buffs from those taunt auras), and can exist easily on a team of multiple scrappers, forming a sort of mobile blender.
A Brute wants aggro. Because Aggro means Fury which means SMASH! Multiple Brutes form an uneasy partnership, fighting each other for precious Aggro/Fury/SMASH!
(please note, the above are gross generalisations, and I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who those generalisations don't fit, but they're the main differences that occurred to me)
-
I used to hoard them and almost never use them. Oddly enough, it was when I was levelling my Ice/Ice tanker than got me out of that habit. Post-ED and Pre-IO's, they were a godsend in staying alive.
I do have a common insp tray layout on all my toons though:
(this is from my Stone/Fire scranker, hence all the large insps, he burns a fair few bosses)
F1 is always Greens, smallest at the bottom, largest at the top
F2 is always Blues.
F3 is always Purples.
F4 is either Purples or Oranges, depending on the toon
F5 is always an Awaken and Breakfree in the lower two slots, then a Tier 3 Red, kept from Breakout/Outbreak to test my willpower (I've never yet managed to keep the Tier 3 Green from Outbreak all the way to 50). The top slot is either kept free by burning anything that appears, or another Breakfree on non mez-protected toons.
I always try to pop a non tier 3 before engaging a boss, to make space for any Tier 3's that they may drop. If I'm full on Tier 3's already, then I email one to myself to make a space. -
Quote:Ooh, just noticed that...I skipped Brimstone and Crystal armors, but took Minerals late. With the extra powers from inherent Stamina, I could add in Super Speed for when I can travel without Rooted on.
If you're going non-Granite, then skipping Crystal Armour may not be a good idea. It's one third of your potential 50% Defence Debuff Resistance (the other two thirds being in Rooted and Rock Armour). -
Quote:I'd suggest Stone Skin earlier and with a Steadfast Res/Def in it. A Gladiator's Armour Unique too, if you've got inf/30 AMerits to burn.Never built a Stone tank before but I've always liked the idea of running one sans-Granite as a sort of "Ice Tank with more regen, no psi-hole and a ****** travel power".
The below build gives me softcapped S/L/E/N/P with ~40% S/L/F/C RES, 480% Regen & 3368HP with Earth's Embrace. The only real sacrifice I'm making is a lack of recharge bonuses, but without Granite it's hopefully not such a big problem.
Suggestions/Criticism/Abuse is welcome.
<build snipped>
Thanks.
Also, why completely ignore Granite? My Stone/Fire scranker is soft capped S/L/E/N/Psi with 39.6%S/L res and 49.3% F/C Res, but I've still got Granite as a panic button. Not at least Having Granite as an option is like not taking Hibernate on an Ice tanker. Now Granite's not going to save you when there's Psi damage in the mix, but it's damn useful when you need it in pretty much all other situations.
Also, looking at your build, you're probably going to be hurting for endurance. Get some +recovery in there, even with Dark Consumption; running all your armours and Mudpots is expensive. Another two slots in Stamina, with 4 parts of Performance Shifter including the +end proc, drop the Numina and Miracle uniques into Health and strip Physical Perfection down to just a +end proc (move the other slot to Stamina along with one of Health's, unless you want to drop a Regen Tissue +regen Unique into Health too). Since you're already going to be paying through the nose for Obliteration, Eradication and Reactive Armours, you may as well go the whole hog :P
Your mileage of course, may vary. Feel free to ignore my witterings and build it your own way <grin>. -
I've got this build on my Stone/Fire scranker. Softcapped S/L/E/N/Psi out of Granite (where I spend as much time as possible) and Softcapped S/L/F/C/E/N defence in Granite with capped S/L/F/C resist and E/N resist at 84%ish. It's got some +recharge, but not a huge amount as it wasn't one of my aims, since I'm not often in Granite. It's also swimming in endurance, as I got tired of never having any on him
There is one hideously expensive thing in the build, but I'd been saving Hero Merits for just such an occasion and it was 30 merits well spent, IMO.
I was tanking on Tin Mage tonight with him and only needed Granite at the end of the third mission, against Neuron, his clones and both Goliath Warwalkers (at the same time). I did plant against Bobcat, but that's because she got a couple of solid hits in when I was back in my normal armours. As soon as I had been rezzed and got back in Granite, she was no trouble.
I don't know how much of that survivability was down to the build, but I suspect that a decent amount was down to some good teammates.
Not necessarily what you're looking for, since I use Granite as a 'panic button', but it may give you some ideas.
And besides, any build that can survive aggro capped Carnies indefinitely makes me grin while I'm playing it(Disclaimer: 'indefinitely' in that context means I can stomp round a map full of carnies solo, aggroing multiple spawns of Carnies onto myself and stand there burning them down as they run at me to replace their friends that just got crisped with no endurance trouble and no health bar trouble)

I use TP on a few toons, most get an additional slot so it can have an end cost and a range in it (I default to SO's or generic IO's).
On my Stone/Fire scranker, so far my only properly IO'd alt, I've got the Winter's Gift Travel/End and Slow Resist IO's. Mainly for the slow resist proc, but I'm not going to ignore the 5% cold resist, which stacks nicely on Brimstone Armour (I only use Granite when I really absolutely have to).
My Bots/Traps MM has (I think) 3 slots in it, but he's on Generic IO's and was a non-stamina build before inherent stamina came in, so I'm not sure that counts.
You can get away with just an end cost in the default slot quite nicely, and that'll let you do long distance travel pretty comfortably, assuming your endurance situation isn't too tight.
For sets, my usual standpoint is 'put in whatever you want and whatever makes sense for your build aims', but more end cost in teleport is rarely a waste if you're travelling long distances. -
Quote:I've been detoggled on my (mostly non-IO'd) Dark Armour/Stone Melee scranker by Carnies when tanking for a team, and not by end crashing.I don't understand how your status protection is falling, when it's all toggle bases, except for your Immobilize Protection, which is in Burn (and thusly used all the time).
Are you not watching your end?
I think the point was that because resist sets get hit by the mezzing attacks far more often than defence sets, then they're more likely to get more than Mag 13 stacked on them.
Now admittedly Carnies on large team is a pretty extreme example, but it's pretty easy to have happen; and a spawn with 2 Master Illusionists and their 8 Illusionist pets between them can pretty easily overwhelm you if enough of them get lucky with Flash and/or Blind. Add in Dark Ring Mistresses and Dark Servants with even more holds, and it can just get painful very fast. -
Quote:Minor peeve.I don't know either, so I hereby introduce you to the Quiznos 2006 promotion: Sponge Monkeys
It's Spongmonkeys, not sponge.
Spong, incidentally, is so far as I know a B3ta term, and closely related to the gnops.
It should be added that any links to B3ta are likely to be NSFW, but not usually in a sexual manner, more often in a dubious taste/peurile humour sort of way... -
I'll take good looking and works over ugly and instagibs the target.
I skipped Gamblers Cut on my Katana/Regen because I hated the animation. This was back in issue 3, I still don't have it, regardless of how good it may be now on a DPA front with the changes since then.
I took and kept Repair on my Bots/Traps MM, even though it's got a recharge that moves like Golden Syrup in a walk in Freezer.
I've got and use regularly Eagles Claw on my MA/Shield scrapper.
On a side note, Storm Kick, when used on a flying/hovering scrapper leaves you in a seriously cool pose. I use it a lot
Not the largest image, but you remain in the pose until you move away or attack again.
I could go on, but never mind. -

Well, I've been waiting until I calmed down a little before adding anything to this. I'm not sure how much I've calmed down, but I may as well add this before the thread goes moribund.
Pretty much anything I may want to add has already been said, so I'm doing not much more than reiterating for emphasis.
On a gut reaction level this feels like one last shafting of the EU players before they're not a significantly separate entity any more (other than language for Zukunft and Vigilance, currency used to pay subscriptions, etc.). And this is a gut reaction because frankly, EU players have gotten used to getting the short end of the stick. Hell, it took us months to even GET Global Chat after it was rollled out in the US.
To the argument from the US players that 'but look what you're getting for potentially losing a significant part of your in-game identity, more servers!' I say 'Yeah? So? I play on one server and one server only as it is. I only have alts on Union, how does that have any bearing on me?'
I'm currently at 6 and a bit years veteran status, I played in EU beta, and the thought (even though it may not happen, just the thought) of my global name being taken by a US trial account is a matter of concern to me.
Is my sustained loyalty to this game thought that little of?
You may note, if you've read that far that I care relatively little for the technical arguments. My in game/global identity is something that has non-financial value to me. Just like the memories of people I've teamed with and personalities that go with my toons are a personal thing. Having Paragon Studios/NC (whoever made the decision) apparently decide that because I happen to live in the EU, that I'm intrinsically worth less (I know they've said no such thing, I'm talking impressions here) than a North American player... that just grates.
Oh, and any EU players with their Globals either in their board profile or signature? You may want to remove those, save yourself some potential griefing, because there will always be a couple of idiots who think it's hilarious to do such things, regardless of how mature and sensible the rest of the board population may be... -
Quote:I'm running the Cardiac Core Paragon, recovering 4.12end/sec, and burning 2.11end/sec when running all my armours and toggles. In the totals part you will have end recovery and end cost of toggles, not including the end cost of the attack chain. Now what is important is the difference between the end cost of the build whilst attacking and end recovery. I would rather slot for end reducers in a attack or heavy toggle than gain some small end rec bonus somewhere in a passive or somit. I wouldn't want to live without haste. Too long a wait for build up or earths embrace outside of granite.
I can attack pretty much indefinitely.
Regarding Hasten, I deliberately set out when I originally made that toon to avoid all of the common negative (and probably false anyway) Stone Tanker cliches. That means I don't team only with Kineticists and then beg for speed boosts every 45 seconds, I don't cower in Granite permanently and I don't have Hasten.
Earths Embrace is there to be used either pre-emptively to increase my HP buffer, or as a slow activating reactive heal when I hit about 50% health. it recharges fast enough for me.
Build Up is there to boost my AoE alpha strike on a spawn. Pop Call to Justice, Teleport into the middle, Build Up, Combustion, and by that point a lot of the mobs have moved in closer for the smaller AoE in Fire Sword Circle to be more effective.
I don't personally want EE or BU to be back every 20 seconds, and the recharge on this build is high enough for my needs.
I'm not saying this is a perfect build for everyone, but it's one that suits my playstyle and requirements.
Also, to reiterate, I don't live in Granite. It's a panic button, to be used only when my HP are dropping fast and there's no psi damage around.
YMMV. -
While I've been playing the game for a long time, I've always found IO's to be a faff on, so I tend not to bother with them.
But I've got this scranker...
Stone/Fire, NOT perma-Granite, in fact I use Granite as a panic button, when things are about to go sour without it.
The build I've been using on him for the last few years is :

I finally decided that he should really get a 'proper' build about a month ago, after I'd accidentally gotten the Leader badge on him without really trying for it...
At the end of this post is what I came up with and finally got round to putting together on Saturday.
The aims of the build were 1) soft capped S/L/E/N/Psi. 2) enough +recovery that I could run everything and not have my end bar suffer. 3) enough +run speed that Rooted left me still over base run speed. 4) Not to lose any of the powers that I'd taken in the original build, as to me, the power choices form the major part of the feel of the character. 5) While he's a scranker, I've got to be able to tank for a team, and to me, that means taunt, fully enhanced.
(The hideously expensive Gladiators Unique came from another of my alts that had accrued 30 Hero Merits for exactly that purpose.)
So, after about 8 hours of faffing around buying stuff, making stuff, storing stuff in the base, alting to other toons who had stuff they could 'donate' to the build and so forth I had this set up and ready to go: (actually I didn't. I forgot Build Up on the original build <facepalm>. That got fixed with a quick freespec on Sunday when I noticed the cockup, as this build went on to a secondary slot, leaving my original build in slot one for nostalgia puposes)
After testing it since, I'm quite happy with it. I've got more recovery than I know what to do with, and am now harder to defeat than I've ever been.
It only cost me 1.2ish billion, 30 Hero merits, 200 Reward merits and a few thousand AE tickets for salvage all told, too. A price I could have vastly reduced with some patience, but since I don't like the faff on, I knew that if I hadn't put the build together in one shot, I'd have gotten bored/irritated/annoyed and never done it.
Anyway, feel free to pick holes in the build, but I'm happy with it <grin>.

Quote:Or maybe it's another, different one of the Nuclear 90, with similar taste in outfit?Yeah I saw that too - not sure what's going on there
Maybe she's trying to win Jimmy back from Statesman?
Or for a more disturbing thought, maybe it's not an outfit, maybe they're starkers and that's what your skin looks like when you've got a fusion reactor for a heart... -
Quote:'Exemplared up'?
COMBINED
Powers
- The 78 Month Veteran Award power, Experienced is now applied to characters even when exemplared up.
Wasn't that known once upon a time as being 'sidekicked'?
'Exemplared up' sounds like a clumsy turn of phrase when there's already a term in common game usage which describes the situation. -
There's already sort of a space in the CoH story for Egyptian, since IIRC the once or twice mentioned but never expanded upon 'Blood of the Black Stream' were of Egyptian origin.
That all assumes I'm recalling things I read on the boards years ago correctly. -

Quote:I think it's one of Mage Killer Zukhara's missions that has the running CoT boss. There's a running Circle of Thorns boss in one of the 40 to 50 Grandville arcs (I think it's GW's patron arc) and when I ran that mission on Nightshade (thugs/poison MM) I got hopelessly turned around in the final room of the cave map (the 5 level one) and couldn't locate the exit corridor, let alone give chase. Luckily I did manage to target him long enough to set the pets to attack and somehow they managed to catch him and kill him before he got away, while I stood sulking at the other end of the map, watching the Target window in disbelief.
Way back in Issue 7 (I think) there was a bug that meant that any power with knockback in it caused those 'prevent the boss from escaping' missions to instantly fail. That bug was NOT fun on a SS/Inv Brute, or a Bots/Traps MM, until I figured out which upgrades not to apply to which pets to make them not do any knockback...
I walked all over Crimson on my Bots/Traps, because he was webbed to the ground as soon as I found him and didn't move a step after that. The SS/Inv brute chased him all the way to the door with me swearing at him as I would get into range, throw a punch, then have to spend another 5-10 seconds getting back into range to throw another punch while my fury bar emptied itself. And he still got away from me. -
Quote:Biff's not just a boss. There's one where a boss named Biff hightails it and you have to stop him. It is one of the most annoying missions unless you have some type of controls.
He's an *Arachnoid* Elite Boss, IIRC.
Arachnoid Bosses are a high damage, mezzing, regenerating, debuffing nightmare. Arachnoid Elite Bosses who decide they really have an urgent appointment somewhere else? -
I'm getting bounced at the login screen when I try to enter my password with the usual 'login servers unavailable, check your firewall etc. etc.' error. I've been trying for the last 5 hours, more or less, but I'm an EU player, so not the same problems you're seeing.
The odd bit being that the updater has no trouble at all, and logging into these boards had no trouble at all. (the latter's the really odd bit to me, since they use the same details).
I can't even submit a ticket, because all ncsoft.com URLs (including these boards) are unreliable and basically won't load for me. This leads me to suspect an ISP/routing issue for me.
Hohum. I'll wait until tomorrow evening until I get annoyed, since I'm hoping that whatever glitch it is will get sorted during working hours tomorrow.
(second try at posting this, first one died when the servers vanished from my view of the internet...) -
I read the boards at about 7:20am while I'm having my breakfast, then not again until about 7pm or later, since I can't read them at work any more.
And I'll take someone able to communicate directly to the dev team, thank you very much. Immediate interaction was nice with Bridger et al, but nowadays, I think it's much less of a concern, with the servers being US based anyway.
Oh, and try and get someone who can give the French and German communitioes (such as are left) some significant attention. I may not play on those servers, or even speak the language, but that doesn't mean they deserve to be left out in the cold, regardless of the efforts Avatea puts in.
