As you can see for practical purposes his Energy Smash will one-shot code a tanker with 23% resistance... if it hits you'll be left with 1 hit point and I hope you can eat some greens in a hurry. Your best bet is to bump your defense to 75% (until the Blue tower dies) and eat some orange candy to get your resistance above 60%.
Once the Red tower dies it becomes a lot easier since that drastically cuts his damage output. He still hits like a truck, just not like an 18 wheeler anymore.
If I'm tanking him with CMA, I'll have my defense at 75% (purple pills, 45% naturally) until the blue tower dies and I'll always have 90% S/L resist and ~34% E/N. Until the red tower dies I keep one or two medium/large oranges active to get my E/N into the 50-70% range. If he connects with Energy Smash he'll take me down by approximately 60%... if he connects twice in a row he can drop me. That's why I keep a couple of big greens in my tray and Dull Pain ready to fire. -
Quote:With my Mind/Kin I typically open combat with Mass Hypnosis, fly in for Fulcrum Shift then back off and hit 'em with Terrify followed by a confuse on a boss and a hold on anything else that looks problematic. My single target chain is Dom/Lev/Mez with Siphon Speed tossed in as it comes up. Confuse is a fantastic way to change that problem mob into an asset... nothing's more fun than confusing a Malta Sapper and watching him drain that boss dry for youSo I have arrived at lvl 25. Still having lots of fun and have a new question.
When I finally get to FS will my chain be my Mass Sleep, FS, Siphon Power, and then my damaging attacks?Mass Confusion I tend to keep as a "Oh S!@$" button or to quickly stack confuse on an AV.
I didn't find room for Siphon Power in my build unfortunately... this is a moderately tight build and you'll always have something else you wish you had room for. -
I'm not really an expert at either WP or SS since I've never played SS and my only WP is a Brute. With that said I can tell you what's going to be pricey in your build.
Pretty much all of the Numina set is expensive with several IO's approaching 100 million. It DOES have decent availability at higher levels but you're going to pay for them.
Kinetic Combat is a double whammy... first it's extremely hard to come by with a couple of the IO's being practically non-existent. As a side effect of this they're highly expensive. There's a couple of them that are reasonable and in adequate supply but two of the IO's are in the 100 million range... if you can find them at all. They're nice to have, but unless you've a ton of inf and a lot of time to wait you may want to go with the cheaper and available Smashing Haymaker set.
The Miracle Unique is expensive... around 75 million the last I bought one but that's been a couple of months ago. The Numina unique seems to run in the 70-120 million range although I haven't looked recently. I haven't bought a Regen Tissue unique for any character so I don't offhand know what it's going for but I'd be very surprised if it wasn't fairly close to 100 million.
Luck of the Gambler is generally not TOO bad except for the 7.5% recharge... that tends to hover around 100 million, plus or minus 20 million.
I frankly can't understand the two Mako's in your attacks... that set bonus is utterly worthless and they're more expensive than something like Pounding Slugfest that will ED cap your attacks with the Kin Combat (or the MUCH cheaper and more available Smashing Haymaker)
Perfect Zinger is cheap for the recipe but needs a few pricey pieces of salvage... Mocking Beratement is for all practical purposes free since it doesn't need any expensive salvage. The most expensive thing about the Mocking Beratement set is the crafting cost, you should be able to get the recipes for under 10,000 each. Still, either set is quite affordable.
Personally I wouldn't bother enhancing KoB's hold; it's really not necessary. If money's tight I'd slot your attacks with 4 Smashing Haymaker and 2 Pounding Slugfest, the Acc/Dam and Dam/Recharge. You should be able to buy all that for 5 million or less per attack.
Footstomp I'd go with 4 Eradication as you have and finish with 2 Scirocco's Dervish. It won't exactly be CHEAP, but it shouldn't break the bank; maybe in the 12-20 million range.
Looking over your setup I would suggest more slots for HPT; it can use more heal and resist. IW is really fine with the base slot unless you really need another IO mule. You may want to consider another set of Reactive Armor for MoB for a bit more defense.
You could make a basic build for probably around 50 million with roughly 33% defense to nearly all types. Your current build will be really close to a billion and improves your S/L defense to around 41%. Yeah, it's more effective, but it's REALLY going to cost you.
You'll need to decide what you want to budget for this toon but unless you're able to spend 500 million or more you can pretty well forget the Kinetic Combat and Luck of the Gambler Recharge. It wouldn't surprise me for a set of Kin Combat to cost 200-300 million.
Frankly I can't see any reason for a Willpower to need the Miracle Unique... you shouldn't have much end problem. Likewise the Numina and Regen Tissue uniques are less valuable to you since you already have considerable regen. -
Quote:WM is valuable for several things... first it's an untargeted AOE that you can pop off immediately when you jump into melee for aggro purposes AND to deal with the occasional untargetable mob stuck in a wall or ceiling. Additionally any AOE becomes vastly more effective the more foes you have in it's radius. It may not deal tons of damage (and if you're worrying about that why have you slotted Clobber the way you have?) but it does deal that damage to up to 10 baddies around you. That makes it's Bash level damage start to look a lot better doesn't it? ~50 points of damage base per target dealt to up to 10 targets = 500 points of damage. That sounds worthwhile to me for any tank... you're designed to be surrounded by baddies.Ok I don't quite get it but at what point does WM become a better attack then any of the ST ones other then the fact it's AoE?? With both Physical perfection and Stamina I don't see endurance being a problem hence why I used the Obliterates instead of hybridizing it. Boxing is a set monkey right now and thats all I have it for is the second set of kinetic combat. Sure I can slot Clobber for dmg and if i do that I'm gonna likely go with a Makos bite or Touch of Death for the dmg boost.
I wouldn't suggest Mako or ToD for an Invuln; they offer positional defense instead of typed so they're less desirable for the purpose. I'm also not really sure the 3% damage bonus would be that noticeable absent stacking considerable additional bonuses. I WOULD strongly second the suggestion Finduilas made about slotting Clobber for damage instead of stun... I don't know of very many situations where you're better off slotting for a secondary effect at the expense of damage. Slotting Clobber for damage will do far more for your kill speed than the minor damage bonus.
I'd also recommend stripping the slots out of Boxing... it's a waste to use a Kinetic Combat set there. Put four into Clobber and finish with Pounding Slugfest. There's lots of better places for the slots from Boxing.
Looking over your build you're obviously not concerned about inf since I doubt you could get this done for under 5 billion. That being the case I won't comment on the purples or the Pancea proc. I would suggest some reslotting of Invincibility... Cytoskeleton HO's are just tailor made to go in here. If you want to go with the LotG in here it does work... you're missing out on the tohit component of Invinc though.
If you're working on a high-recharge build though why no Hasten? You could drop Pulverize and toss Hasten in. Oh, I just noticed another thing, do you have the 60 month Vet badge? If you don't you won't be able to get Fly without first getting Hover or Air Superiority.
I agree that Focused Accuracy really isn't worth the endurance it consumes anymore; I'd grab Conserve Power as the prerequisite and just leave it at the default slot. All in all there's lots of things I'd do differently but I've no doubt that this build would WORK... it just could be substantially better. -
Quote:Oh, that's interesting. I'll have to remember that in the future. An interesting bit about Temp Powers and Echoes:
You always get the full strength Temp Power the first time you do an arc, even if the first time is a Flashback. If you've finished an arc, and therefore have the souvenir, and the arc name is colored with a star beside it in the mission list, you get the weaker Echo version (when applicable).
If you want a certain temp power, do not do the arc as you're levelling up. Once it's available in Ouroboros, get the arc via Flashback, and once you earn the temp power, open your Team window and Quit Task Force. You will still have the temp power, and you won't have the souvenir, meaning that you can repeat this process and get the full strength temp power again. -
Quote:In some cases yes and in others no. The Wedding Band for example can be earned repeatedly after you've used up the original... BUT when you get a replacement it's only good for 5 minutes of use. I think the Warwolf whistle is similarly reduced... I can't remember offhand but I think it's 2-3 charges instead of the original 5.Hey everyone,
Quick question -- if I do an arc using the Flashback system that would normally give a temporary power upon completion of one of the missions (for example, Wedding Band through Peebles), will I receive this power? Or does it take it away?
Also, on this, what if I do the arc more than once through the Flashback system? Can I get another of the temporary powers (if I have one already), does it replace the one I had before, or does it just not reward one?
I don't know what it does if you still have the original temp; I've never done one until I'd used up the first. If it works like the Shivan Shard then you'll get nothing since you still had the power... for Shivans you'll always want to make sure you use up all charges before you talk to the Scientist after gathering and processing the samples. Oh, and you REALLY don't want to gather samples, kill the firebase and process them and immediately hit the chopper without talking to the contact... I had a friend who did that once and he was, well, less than thrilled to have to do it all again. We did kill the firebase for him again while he went back around gathering samples. -
You always used to get that every time you hit 50 since that was the "unlock" level for Kelds/SOA. It didn't matter if you were hitting your first 50 or the 15th, it still always gave the "Epic AT unlocked". Now that they've moved the unlock requirement to 20 you'll see that every time you hit 20.
The fact that they unlock at 20 is another story altogether. Good, Bad or Indifferent that's what we have now. I'll confess to skepticism myself since they are considerably more complex to play and build. -
You're correct; but the NCSoft master account may well be different than the game login... mine is anyway.
-
Quote:It was probably because of repeated attempts to log in with the wrong password... I don't know if NCSoft does that but it's fairly common in other industries. I'd say you'll need to contact support to resolve matters now. You'll be asked to prove it's your account... I'd suggest going through your old emails to see if you can find the welcome email from when you signed up. If you got the downloaded version that email should have your code; if you bought the boxed version try and locate it so you'll have the code, they will ask for it.Thanks for the link. I queried 'master account permanently blocked' and it says that the account cannot be accessed in any way now. This really, well, sucks. I had some veteran rewards on that account. Like I said, I've never spammed or bought influence or done any of that stuff on the account - the last thing I remember doing was a low level taskforce in Faultline - was it hacked?

Quote:Well, I just reformatted a WinXP laptop with an ATI X700 Mobility card and the ATI drivers from their page and supposedly for that card refused to install saying that the card was unsupported and to get drivers from the manufacturer (Sony). Unfortunately the newest drivers Sony had for that model were over 2 years old so I went to Omega and snagged the latest drivers there.Actually, ATi does.
For NT6 systems ATi offers a current OpenGL 3.x+ / Dx10+ driver:
32bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...b_win7-32.aspx
64bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...b_win7-64.aspx
For NT5 systems, ATi offers a reference OpenGL 2.x / Dx9 driver based on the 9-3 legacy driver release:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_ca...xp/mobility-xp
I guess from that experience that ATI's laptop drivers are... spotty in weather they'll install or not. The Omega drivers worked perfectly; I understand they're the same as the ATI ones with a changed install program that doesn't care if you're installing on a laptop. -
Quote:If you're still debating secondaries for a "natural" character I'd say your choices would be:Thanks very much for this in-depth comparison. I also agree 100% that it is the Tank's job to hold aggro at all costs. During the many hours I've spent playing CoH, I remembering seeing a few tanks without taunt and the first thought that came to my mind was simply "go delete that character, you're doing it all wrong." That may be a little harsh, but hey, they generally couldn't hold aggro as well as a tank with Taunt.
-MT
Super Strength - the classic pairing with Invuln and quite functional... it's popular for a reason. Good single target damage and mitigation and a very good AOE, unfortunately you have to wait until 38 for it.
Mace - in the final analysis you've simply picked up a big stick to smack somebody upside the head; there's many weapon options. Stick, Mace, Ball Bat, Shovel, Sledge Hammer etc. Mace also offers quite a lot of mitigation with knockdown and stuns and has decent AOE. Hard to get much more natural than a baseball bat.
Axe - somewhat similar to Mace with lots of weapon options... even a shovel. Good damage with knockup/down. Pick up the wood axe and you've the Shining. Heck, I could walk out to the garage and grab an axe and be all set IRL
Dual Blades - kind of an oddball set in that it has a lot of reliance on combination attacks to maximize it's effectiveness... start with attack A then use attack C then attack D to get the combination off. It's effective, I just tend to think a tank has other things to worry about than using attacks in the correct order. -
Quote:Inv has an option to completely turn off all graphics effects so you won't have any visible armor glow. On Taunt Aura... well, on those grounds there's literally no comparison.Haven't played end game content in awhile, is INV flashy at all (graphically)? Also, how is WPs taunt aura vs INVs? It seems that INVs is better? Is it a big gap?
Inv's aura, Invincibility, has a 17 second duration MAG 4 taunt with a 1 second "tic" rate. It's autohit on any non-AV enemy
WP's aura, Rise to the Challenge, has a 1.25 second duration (no typo) MAG 3 taunt with a 1 second "tic" rate. It's autohit on any non-AV enemy
By way of comparison, every other taunt aura has a minimum duration of 14 seconds and is MAG 4. WP is so incredibly much weaker that you'll need to rely almost exclusively on your secondary to hold aggro... against +2 enemies that aura won't even last the 1 second it takes the power to tic again.
Willpower can be tough defensively, but Invuln can be second only to Granite Armor with moderate IO bonuses. With WP you would really have to work to hold aggro because your primary is very little help... Inv has one of the strongest taunt auras in the game and holds aggro extremely well.
If it weren't for the pathetic taunt aura of WP I'd say it was a good choice... as things stand if you want to hold aggro it's the worst choice out there. I guess I'm biased, but I firmly believe that a tanker's primary purpose is to hold aggro so the rest of the team doesn't have to worry about it... from that standpoint WP is terrible. Yeah, in competent hands it can work but it's much more difficult. -
Quote:If Nvidia doesn't have drivers for your mobile card you can get them from Omega Drivers. I don't know if Nvidia has laptop drivers on their site but ATI doesn't.Hmmm...
The Alienware site said the drivers were up to date...?
Off to nVidia I go. and thanks for the link.

Quote:I know exactly how long the wait for new toys... er... parts is. Fortunately Newegg is really quick at getting those, er, business tools, out to you promptly.yea i know lol. i can buy a new monitor not this check but next pay check i can. i just also put the order in for my new computer parts. lol i cant wait.

Quote:As Father Xmas mentioned the card will have a DVI-VGA adapter so you're good there. I would be tempted to upgrade your monitor at some point but it can wait; for now your current one will work.i was looking at the pictures of the the video card and just notice that my monitor doesnt have DVI. heres my monitor: http://www.google.com/products/catal...&os=tech-specs .. so im also gonna have to buy a new monitor? if thats the case can someone point me in the direction of a good dvi monitor at a decent price?
I've found that the 21"-24" ASUS panels are quite nice... I think I paid around $250 for the 24" at Best Buy a couple months ago when one of my older Samsung monitors bit the dust. Not something you should worry about right now since you're over budget at the moment but food for thought in the future. A good DVI panel will be considerably sharper and nicer than your current monitor. -
Quote:Kismet +6% tohit unique... it's mislabeled as +6% accuracy but it's really tohit. Offers roughly the same tohit bonus as FA at zero end cost.Yes to accuracy. However, you can't get +tohit from any IO bonus as far as I know. I may be wrong, but I just went cross eyed trying to speed read set bonuses on wiki.
There's also Tactics, which offers a scrapper 7% base tohit buff at a base end cost of .39 eps vs FA's 5% base tohit @ .78 eps.
Frankly I can't see much reason to pick up FA anymore since it was gutted a few issues ago... it costs WAY too much endurance for way too little benefit. After the nerf to FA I've dumped it on all my builds that had it. The only benefit I can see is it's tohit debuff resistance; and that's just way too much cost for a small benefit. -
Yep, I get it every time I log in and occasionally on zoning; it's generally kind of a loud rumble for me. It's not as loud for me as for most of you, but then again I generally play with SFX turned down to 15%... and this is at least twice as loud as a battle.
Win7, Asus mobo with onboard SoundMAX Digital HD Audio. It's an annoying bug, but I have to admit it's lower priority than many other bugs I've run into since it only lasts 1-2 seconds. -
Quote:+4/8 will be significantly harder to kill and will take considerably longer... that's the reason for farming 0/8, you can kill them MUCH faster so you can kill many more in a given period of time.I know that increasing to +4/+8 reduces the number of quality drops. I have no idea why though.
BUT, I have yet to try lower than +2/+8...truthfully the thought never occurred to me.
I would be interested to knwo the results.
At +2/+8 I get about 3 or more purples per week...usually...and IF I do a lot of farming.
These days though, I barely farm.
What the best ratio of mob level to kill speed may be depends on your individual character... try a run at +2/8 and another at 0/8 with Herostats running and compare which one was better on an earnings/hour basis. -
Quote:In my opinion a Scrapper is probably the best AT for a new player to get his feet wet with; it has enough durability to be forgiving of mistakes while having good damage output so you can kill things quickly. Scrappers also have a fairly simple place in team dynamics... your job is simply to walk up to the baddies and punch them in the face. Don't really worry so much about the finer points of the game as of yet; for now just explore and learn.Wow...thanks for all the info. Actually, one of the reasons I decided to buy CoH was in perusing the forums here and seeing how good the community is. From my experience reading the forums and (admittedly limited) experience in-game, it seems to me that the CoH community is among the very best communities for MMOs.
To answer your question, Postagulous, I'm playing a scrapper at the moment. I've also fooled around a little bit with a controller, but it seems to me that controller is a bit more of a challenge, so I'll likely hold off on that toon until I'm a bit more competent.Scrapper is a blast, though. In fact, the depth of character creation and development options are one of the biggest reasons I so instantly liked CoH, so I know eventually I'll have to fool around with alts.
And I'll remember going forward, that I'm a lowbie, and newb is preferable to noob.
Oh, and what's the Ninja Pack? Is that like an upgrade you can buy or something?
The Ninja Pack is one of the "super booster packs" you can buy through the NCSoft Store, all of them include relatively minor in-game items and costume pieces and usually a minor power. They're all $10 (well, $9.95).
The reason most people recommend the Ninja pack is strictly for the Ninja Run power... it's a mini-travel power that acts as a half strength Super Speed and Super Jump and is highly useful for characters who haven't yet reached 14 and selected a true travel power. In fact it's good enough that some people skip a travel power entirely and rely on Ninja Run.
Another item to consider would be the "Good vs Evil" goodie pack, it gives you a jump pack that's good for 30 seconds and recharges in 3 minutes... it's very handy to get over that obstacle in your way.
In any case welcome to the game and enjoy your stay. Many of us have been here for years so the game must do something right. -
Hmm, I've been running dual monitors for over 8 years now so I had them from the beginning of COH... I haven't ever had any issues.
I AM running Win7 64bit now with an Nvidia 275 but I haven't heard anybody complaining about dual monitors and i17. Many, many other things yes, but not dual monitors.
Are you playing CoH on one screen and things like web browser, herostats & so forth on the other? Or are you stretching the game across both monitors? I can't really see that causing problems but you never know. -
Quote:I'd think "PITA" would be more appropriate as a name for that macro. You don't need to spell out the whole name. The "... sapper" part is just the pattern of the name that you're looking for.
Like if you're targeting Shamans, you can use:
/macro pta "targetcustomnext enemy alive sham"
and it'll pick up Storm Shamans, Death Shamans and Avalance Shamans.
- the 'pta' is the arbitrary name that'll show on your grey macro button.
- the 'targetcustomnext' command lets you cycle your targeting through all the Shamans in your view.
- the 'enemy' subparameter will ignore team mates who might have the pattern "sham" in their name.
- the 'alive' subparameter will ignore the already defeated ones.
Again, since it's a macro, you can right click the macro button to edit it if you're looking for something else, like a hostage (assuming you know what they're named).
I use a similar one on many characters, my Kelds use a "targetcustomnext void$$targetcustomnext quantum$$targetcustomnext cyst" to find those enemies... I also use a "find" macro for those missions where you're looking for something; "targetcustomnext hostage" or "targetcustomnext nightstar".
Of course I've often wondered if the hostages would have been better off if their parents hadn't named them something like "Sacrificial Victim" or "Helpless Citizen"
I haven't ever heard of one, but is there a way to target by enemy rank? Something that would let you quickly target a boss, EB or AV in a group of minions? -
Quote:True Cat, but not every Master run has a bubbler or emp... while I'd never turn a bubbler away on any mission let alone a Master run there just aren't a lot of them out there. A good emp who actually kept Fort on people would be an asset... they also are rare. Aura Rockers on the other hand are dime a dozenHonestly, if a /regen dies on a Masters run, its likely due to a failure of the (expected) buffers on the team to keep +def or +res on them at a critical point.
I pretty sure I know more /regens with the masters badges than any other scrapper secondary. With a bubble or two and or fortitude, they really are less of a risk than say /SR. if they get hit, they can be back in better shape far faster.
If I could count on good buffers or I knew the regen in question was a top notch player then sure, I'd have no problems with them on a Mo run. Actually I don't really stress about it all that much and if an unknown regen really wanted to try a Mo I'd give it a shot... but I wouldn't expect to succeed. Heck, it's only a badge after all; bragging rights but it doesn't do anything. (In all fairness I'll admit to a LOT of stress the first time I succeeded in MoSTF... after 8 successful runs I don't worry a lot anymore)
In my experience a PuG MoSTF attempt is highly unlikely to succeed; you really need a team that works together well which doesn't often describe your typical PuG. Given a team of decent players who work together well the badge isn't too hard to get, but all it takes to fail is one person to wander off or do something stupid. -
I've run this twice since issue 17 hit and both times I've gotten that bug... it DOES work, you just don't have any indication of how many Lost you have to go. Ran into it the day after i17 hit and again tonight with the same results.
Bugged it both times... it's only a display error but it's annoying and you're not sure if you're making any progress. -
There's several methods, depending on what you're playing. One that's a favorite of one of my friends is Deceive/Confuse on the Sapper so he drains his buddies instead of you.
The short answer is you want to find them before you attack the group, target them and neutralize them first unless you have significant end drain resistance or a lot of ranged/energy defense. If you're a blaster you want to kill them first and fast... fortunately they're only minions so that shouldn't present a problem as long as you see them first.
So Mez, Confuse or kill them ASAP. As long as you find them before they attack they're easy to deal with. Oh, if you're playing a character without status protection I STRONGLY recommend at least one row of Break Free's in your tray... Malta stuns have an absolutely stupid duration and you WILL get hit by them. -
Quote:Because it's a way to get the attention of something over there while you're tanking stuff over here. Because Taunt + Ranged attack is a guaranteed way to hold aggro of an AV from range... something that's frequently useful (<cough> Ghost Widow). There are quite a number of foes who are much more dangerous in Melee than at range, and several that have a nasty AOE that can one-shot a scrapper that they won't use if you have aggro from range... Infernal is an example of this. Or there's the Arachnos Flier... unless your tank flies you'll be on the ground trying to hold aggro... taunt alone won't do it if you've scrappers or melee blasters on the team. This is a serious question - why on earth is a ranged attack a very helpful power? Can't fathom it.
I find a use for a ranged attack nearly every room on every mission... yeah, I could use other tools to handle the job but it's a tool that works. You have a group that's scattered... jump into the biggest bunch, toss Taunt on some stragglers over there and toss a ranged attack on more stragglers elsewhere and most of the group will clump nicely around you. As a bonus most APP ranged attacks are fast animating and do decent damage so they slot nicely into your regular attack chain.
Is it absolutely necessary? No, but it's quite useful often enough to have it and it's a nice attack to boot.
