Quote:Actually that sounds like a thermal issue... are any of the vent fans covered or dirty? Laptops sometimes can overheat if you've set them on something that blocks the intake/exhaust vents in the bottom, from your description you'd been running for awhile and were in a pretty graphic intense area thus making the card work harder. So we had a five-person team tonight running through an outdoors "find 5 hostages" mission involving freeing people from Nemesis in another world tonight. It's a 2 hour timed mission.
At one point, after about an hour and ten or fifteen into the mission, my girlfriend noticed some brief, considerable flashing on her laptop's screen during a particularly busy fight. We were reasonably close to the Blue Wall. She was, if I'm right, surrounded by a lot of Nemesis goons--Jaegers and Lieutenants. She was playing an ice/energy tank (I think; she has ice armor, and her punches stun people). There was an ice-slick-slinging empath on the team in the vicinity.
Quote:She's worrying that her laptop might be damaged from a short drop earlier (around 4:30 p.m. Eastern time on Friday the 16th). I'm insisting that if her computer (a new Asus laptop less than a month old) were damaged, it wouldn't have started up and/or run Windows 7 properly (we tested the machine and COH almost immediately after the fall), or it would have been giving serious issues long before one random fight in about four or five hours of playing (and, yes, we played for about 30-45 minutes after with no further ill effects).
Quote:The game displayed fine tonight other than this single fight and other than some jerkiness/lag stuff. Sound worked fine. The game apparently ran its usually smooth self overall.
I can't really give specs for her machine or anything--I'm no tech whiz, and her comp is in her car on the way home right now, so I can't say about model numbers or anything--but. . . it SHOULD be ok, overall, right? wrong? Is it possible that she just chanced on a so-called "perfect storm" of visual effects and we're jumping at shadows?
The only thing that might have been an issue was that there was a small, plastic thing--maybe almost credit card sized?--popped out of the front left corner of the laptop's side after the laptop fell (front left facing it like you're going to use it, where one's left hand might rest at the corner). That small plastic thing slid right back into place no problem, but we don't know what it IS.
Quote:Got any insights or suggestions? We're going to try to keep playing the fool out of her machine this weekend as time permits to make sure everything's good to go, but any reasonable input (even given this limited information) would be MUCH appreciated. The laptop's new, as said, and cost close to two grand, so she's rightly scared about this. -
If you haven't already you might try clicking on "verify all files" on the updater; I've had odd graphical problems before that were corrected by that. A corrupted file is a common cause.
<edit>
Reading Mandu & Father Xmas' replies I would bet that's the case, although verifying won't hurt anything. I've never played with Intel "graphics" so it didn't occur to me at first glance. -
Quote:I've been on both sides of this equation with a tanker and a shield scrapper; I see your point about aggro. As a BS/Shield scrapper the aggro I get is almost always mine even with a moderately competent tanker on the team. For that character this isn't generally a problem since he's defensively at midrange tanker levels... I've used him to main tank the ITF before. Yeah, a well built Invuln, Stone or Shield tanker is tougher but for most content that's academic... and I've actually run into a granite tanker who was squishier than that scrapper.A Tanker can hold aggro off Brutes and Scrappers that don't taunt if they (Tanker) do. I've held aggro on all four STF patrons with a Shield Scrapper before as WP. The problem is:
- If a Brute Taunts, Game Over for the Tanker. Best one in the world can't generate enough threat. (This is what I have a major problem with.)
- Even with non-Taunting Brutes/Scrappers, the Tanker needs to have a solid understanding of threat mechanics and a build to back it up. They may know what they need to do, but if they can't taunt frequently enough, pump out a high enough taunt duration, or dish out enough damage, they're sunk. It's not uncommon to see Tanker builds that skimp out on offense (4 Kinetic Combat and calling it done, I'm looking at you) in favor of keeping their mitigation high.
I hate to think of what the slotting must have been as he had the prerequisite powers.
As a tanker with a shield or invuln scrapper on the team I generally let them handle what they can and keep one eye on them to see if they get in over their heads. I'll admit it's difficult to get aggro from them but it can be done. That's part of the reason I always push the pace; so that I'm (as much as possible) the first one into battle. The other part is to keep the ranged AT's from getting bored and pulling another group down on us unexpectedly.
I do have to shake my head on occasion with uh, suboptimal tanker builds. There's almost always enough slots to manage good offense as well as good defense once a build matures. In the early levels true you have a problem, but by the mid-late 30's you should have enough slots for both a solid offense and defense.
In short I look at having a scrapper with a strong aura as an occasional challenge instead of a handicap. If they're tough enough to handle the aggro it makes my job easier; if they aren't then I've a challenge on my hands. - If a Brute Taunts, Game Over for the Tanker. Best one in the world can't generate enough threat. (This is what I have a major problem with.)

Last night we didn't have huge issues, still slower than normal load times but nothing like we had a couple days ago.
We've been on Guardian redside for the last several days running up a new team. Two nights ago we had about 6 times when we had to kill the client because we were hung on the loading screen out of maybe a dozen missions. We got so if we hung for 60 seconds we restarted the client rather than wait forever. Last night we only ran 5-6 missions and didn't have to restart COH but we did have a couple of times where we hung for 30-45 seconds.
That's very unusual for us; usually our slowest zoning member still takes less than 30 seconds total while the two of us with fast drives take less than 15.
I will say that I didn't notice unusual amounts of lag once we got in, although we were running paper missions and mayhems both nights rather than more typical lag prone missions. -
I'm not at all surprised, that's why I don't really recommend that set. While the Smashing Haymaker only provides half the bonus it's FAR less expensive and much more available. The recipes for Smashing Haymaker used to be in the $50,000 range and don't use outrageous salvage. I'm sure they're more now but they won't be anything like the Kin Combat set.
-
Here's another data point for you guys, I was running Paper missions with my SG last night redside and there were several occasions where we ALL would hang on the loading screen for extended periods. We found that if we hung for longer than 60 seconds we had to kill COH and restart... a couple of times we hung for over 5 minutes before deciding to open taskmanager and kill COH.
We were all on Vent together like always and we're spread across the country physically. In every instance where we would hang if we loaded at all we ALL got the second loading screen at the same time.
There were four of us last night, two in Indiana, one in Florida and one in New Mexico. We had one XP machine, 2 Win7 machines and one Vista. This is a brand new problem that we haven't encountered before and it started with the new patch yesterday. I've noticed some occasional slow loads prior to last night but nothing like that. -
Indeed, Stone Armor is the exception to the rule on purple's usefulness. Still, there's other ways to get considerable recharge a good bit cheaper. It all comes down to what you want for the character and how deep your pockets are.

Quote:Yeah, I've heard what causes the sound, it's something to do with the heads though... a plastic bit I think that tends to wear. Seagate drives are infamous for this, I've had about a dozen over the last couple of years that had the "click of doom".This is not a head crash. A head crash makes a distinctive screeching sound, and your hard drive immediately and permanently stops working.
Lately I've been sticking with Western Digital and haven't had any of those fail in 5 years and roughly 40 drives. -
Umm, ok. Not really my first choice but I've seen stranger things.
-
From watching the videos (I haven't gotten my beta invite yet damnit) that's my impression... most of the animations seem to be in the Total Focus range for duration. Maybe those are all dated and the final animations will be on par length wise with existing sets but from what I see in the videos I'm not impressed.

Quote:Not that we've been informed of per se, but there are frequent releases of new costume pieces and textures; and the recent addition of being able to customize your power GFX.I've been playing CoH for 6 years and I love the game. But, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that the character generator feels dated.
For me, the most exciting part about the immersive experience is the customization of the character generator -- to be able to create my own heroes and then set them free in the game. Small details matter to me when creating characters. The choice of a face, the patterns, the costume materials, etc.
Although there have been additions to the creator over time, I feel like a the generator needs a face lift. More options for customization in all categories.
In the time since CoH was launched, other games have been entered the market and have similar character builders. Clearly they've learned from CoH, and in some cases, surpassed it.
Any plans for a major upgrade to the builder? -
Quote:This means that the 30-34 is one of the worst choices simply because there's so MANY possible IO's in that range, most of which are utter junk, to come up your odds are really bad about getting a good roll. The above posts are correct that it is Gold you wish to roll under. But the level of the IO you recieve will always be your level or the highest level the IO set runs to. Whichever is lower.
So if you are level 50 and do this you will get a level 50 Numina's. If you did the same and got the Miracle unquie it would be level 40.
When you are rolling in the different level ranges what that opens up is WHICH different sets are possible to be looked at for your roll. So if you are doing level 30-34, that is almost all of the different sets because almost any set crosses that range (I think there are only a few that do not reach 30 and all of the high en sets start at 20/25/30). -
Quote:Some mature controller builds are the most powerful characters in the game; Ill/Rad for example is one of the very few combinations that can solo Giant Monsters... with a fairly high end build of course, but most are quite capable even on SO enhancements once they mature, just not at quite that insane a level. Most controllers are somewhat slow starting and struggle in the early levels but quite a few get really strong in the mid-30's and beyond.Controllers look interesting. I'll try this out as well and see which one I like more. Thank you both.
Mind is an oddball controller set, it actually starts out pretty strong but it peaks early; below 30 it's frequently stronger than most other controllers but once other sets reach 32 and get their pets they generally pull ahead. Mind is still quite capable though; I have a Mind/Kin at 50 and it's a good character. It just isn't on the same level as my other controllers, a 50 Fire/Rad, 50 Ill/Rad and 44 Plant/Storm. -
Quote:That IO is part of a Hold set and goes into hold powers... unless you're electric you probably don't have any holds on your blaster therefore the IO isn't useful to you. Unfortunately it isn't worth much on the market either.Hello, I'm not new to Paragon city but I'm very new to the invention system.
I was wondering why it is that I cannot slot a level 20 Essence of Curare: Accuracy/Recharge on my level 17 blaster's primary or secondary powers.
I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but I can't find anything in-game or on the forums or even in the paragonwiki.
Thanks for your help.
Different IO sets go into different types of powers. As I said Hold sets go into Hold powers, while melee damage sets go into single target melee attacks like punches and kicks, range damage sets go into single target ranged attacks like most of your blaster's single target blasts, targeted AOE sets go into things like Fireball and other AOE ranged attacks.
There are LOTS of different categories of IO sets and a specific power will usually only accept one or two of those categories. When you start getting into IO set builds things can get really complicated in a big hurry.
Read up on Paragon Wiki about IO sets, download Mid's Hero Designer from www.cohplanner.com for the essential tool in planning your builds. I'd suggest going to the Blaster forum for more specific advise about your powersets and build.

Quote:This really cannot be stressed enough, if it's the hard drive that's clicking it WILL die soon. If you've already backed up all the data (the programs themselves don't matter as they can be reloaded from the original disks but the DATA is critical) such as your email, documents, pictures and so forth then a hard drive failure is simply a nuisance. If you haven't backed up your data then when the drive dies all your stuff is GONE.It would also help to know how old the computer is. Some Warping maybe due to simple age. For example a computer that thought everything else could be upgraded has the same Hard drive for the last ... say 6 years. That 6 Year old hard drive would be wearing out.
If Warp for what ever the reason is the problem. BACK UP NOW ASAP RIGHT AWAY EVERYTHING! If the Hard drive is going it's just a matter of time before it is lost.
Even if it isn't the drive that's clicking I would strongly recommend regularly backing up your data... I've had drives suddenly die with no warning. Any important data on my machines is resident on at least two hard drives... really critical stuff exists on more than one computer. It's a fact of life that hard drives die, and it's not that uncommon for them to die suddenly.
Quote:Another Possibility is your Computers FAN could be starting to wobble. Or the Power Supply fan.
when the click happens is it up front where the Drives are? Is it in the back of the computer where the cooling fans are? Or somewhere in the center perhaps the CPU cooling fan.
Bad bearings on a fan can also cause this, as can a bent fan shroud. If the shroud's bent it's usually an easy fix to bend it slightly so it no longer touches the fan. If the fan bearings are making noise it's time for a new fan. Generally new fans cost around $5 so it's no big deal. -
Quote:I'd personally still be tempted to go with the HO's simply because the slots may be more useful elsewhere. Not having seen his build I can't really comment on that but I tend to find slots a bit tight on my tank builds... that's where HO's shine; they allow you to save slots in power A for power B while maintaining full effectiveness. You're not doing it for the rech/to hit buff stats (though of course that's part of it) You're doing it for the bonuses. Either for the defense with Gaussians, and the other bonuses it offers, or the +recharge and other bonuses from 5 adjusted targetting. In addition to better to hit and solidifying/stacking longer the buff.
On the topic of recharge more is always nice but is going after more worth extra slots? It all depends on your build, more often than not IMO you'll find the slots more useful somewhere else but it all depends on your build and individual playstyle. -
Quote:All of this is sounding way too familiar... I had Insight for almost 10 years until Comcast bought out my area a couple of years ago. Since that time I've had things slowly get unstable, just like they were allowing the network components to decay and not replacing old components. Now it's not uncommon for the internet to drop out 1-2 times a day for up to 20 minutes at a stretch. When it was Insight I had 4 outages I can remember in 10 YEARS, not 2 outages each DAY. Naturally the TV service is fine.I'm not talking about the people I talk to, but about Comcast itself. They're the ones that'll give you used, known defective equipment. They're the ones who have pathetic network availability. They're the ones that outsourced their call centers, knowing exactly what sort of experience it'd give to their customers.
And I will never be a customer of theirs again.
I passed on switching to Verizon DSL because their speeds were about half of the cable modem service but as unreliable as Comcast is getting I'm having second thoughts. I'll take a 10 Mbs connection that's reliable over a 25 Mbs connection that flakes out. -
Sure, go to your powers tab, then click the "combat attributes" link on it. That will give you the numbers behind your character, and you can have a window up full time on your HUD monitoring up to 10 of those stats.
-
That's why I tend to write my guides in generalities... I leave the specifics up to the player; after all they'll be playing it not me.
-
Quote:Quite so, I just was simplifying since the OP's just starting out and I didn't want to start loading him down with the math behind it.This is because every single percent of defense you get does more than percent before it. The last 5% of your defenses do just as much for you as the first 40%.
If you're into the math on this, I suggest you read my guide on the softcap (linked in signature). -
Quote:Like Dechs said Purples aren't really useful for tankers... recharge is always welcomed but ideally you're looking for other bonuses. The good news is that those other bonuses are generally much less expensive.I just started playing again after a LONG hiatus and I'm redoing all my enhs from scratch and I can't seem to find any good purples for Inv/SS tanking. Is it just me or are there none?
For some thoughts on your Inv tanker check out my two guides linked in my sig; the soft cap guide gives you the most cost effective method I know of for soft capping your defenses. When I wrote it that build could be done for under 15 million; with prices as they are now it's probably more like 70 million now. -
Quote:In the later game your Shield/Fire will be incredibly effective if built right but like ALL defense based sets it will struggle early. You've rolled up what's arguably the highest damage tanker set and it's good once your defenses mature around the mid-30's.Hey, newbie question. If I want to play a Tanker, are there power combos I should definitely avoid or particularly seek out, or is it pretty much "whatever looks fun"?
In particular, am I going to horribly regret doing shield defense/fire? I picked it for purely aesthetic reasons -- it let me get a particular color scheme effect I wanted, I have no idea how good or bad the powers are.
I'm currently leveling a Shield/Fire tank myself; it was rough until the mid-20's when my defenses got above 30%. By the time you approach the soft cap (45%) all defense sets suddenly get really, REALLY good. -

Ill/FF would be a functional teammate and could be a nice support toon. That said Illusion isn't a great farmer since it's single target based rather than AOE.
For the Illusion part check out Local Man's Ill/Rad guide, it will nicely cover the Illusion portion. Illusion's a very strong primary; it just isn't well suited for farming, for that you want lots of AOE damage. Unless you just don't like playing the character there's no reason to dump it though; I'm sure you'll be a valued teammate.
Of course there's nothing wrong with running up another character if you like; many of us suffer from altitis and have more characters than we have any need for. Personally I've 15 at level 50, 4 more in the 40's and a whole bunch in the 30's and below. -
Quote:If you enable the option Disable desktop composition or Disable visual themes (in the properties for cityofheroes.exe), does that make any impact on the issue? It might be related to the DWM.Quote:Aha! Yes! Thanks a ton, Kitsune; this did the trick. I don't know if it's one or the other, but ticking both boxes has fixed the issue for me.
<edit>
Indeed that did solve the problem, I ticked both options and the problem is gone.
