Quote:No problems so far with my old workstation laptop with a Core2Duo and 7950M. Over 3 years now and it still runs like a top... it's a beast to lug around though (10lbs of laptop & 5lbs of power supply)This game shouldn't be killing a quad-core, but it will eat any mobile GPU at high settings. Tear into its soul. :<
Obviously it doesn't give the results of my QuadCore desktop running a 275GTX on dual 24" monitors but it's nice on the road... once it's sitting on the desk anyway -
Quote:I may play that Fire/Fire up eventually; I drag him out when some of my friends decide to run on Protector. Part of the reason for something else right now is I've done Fire Melee twice including the Shield/Fire I'm finishing up now.um...id like to know why fire is out..its not lvl 50 which means youve abandoned it not finished it
gimmie a actual valid reason you wont get it to 50 before i tell you what to do next.im betting i know why after all ive known you for years now but i wanna actually hear why youve given up on it.
I have semi-abandoned alts from 20-43 scattered around the servers. I'm sure I'll come back to that Fire/Fire tanker at some point... he's a survivor of issue 3 and the Burn nerf of issue 4.
I rolled up the Ice/Elec tanker on Guardian; Dynamic Floe just stepped off the bus into Atlas Park. I'll roll up the Dark/Elec once I do a bit of housecleaning... a couple of other alts will have to go to make room. I think the Bots/Dark MM who's level 6 and unplayed over 1,000 days is a likely candidate. -
Well, first off I'd suggest the following:
Get a can of compressed air
Turn off the machine
Open the side panel
Using something to prevent the fan from spinning (finger, pencil or whatnot blow out the dust bunnies from the CPU heat sink.
Repeat the above on the GPU heat sink making sure not to let the fan spin.
Check and make sure no wires are touching any fans.
*Note - make sure you hold the can upright or you'll get some VERY cold liquid spraying out*
That's good preventive maintenance in any case; I'd guess that COH is pushing the machine a bit and it's having to ramp up the RPM's on the fans. If the problem continues you'll need to figure out which fan is the loud one and replace it. Fortunately fans are pretty cheap. -
Quote:Interesting build, I can see a few things I'll do differently but I thank you for the ideas. I'll be shifting slots to get the ST attacks a bit more accuracy and I think I'll get Dark Regen earlier... Hasten can wait I think. When I'd first made Stoirm Thoirni, my Dark/Elec tank, I'd put together the build I'll add here. Most early builds are a guildline for me, not a build etched in stone. He's currently sitting at lvl 28 right now and I've done a few things differently then the build. I took taunt where I show CoD and I put SS off till after 20 and grabbed Thunder Strike earlier. Ninja run sufficed for a travel power in the early levels. I'll definately be getting CoD at 30 and we'll see how it goes from there. If nothing else this may give you some ideas.
The only two IO's that I've bothered with so far have been the Theft of Essence proc, and the Razzle Dazzle proc. Because the Razzle Dazzle is in a toggle I'm really only getting about a 4% proc on average. In the end it's not something that's as nice as I was hoping, but for now I'll leave it there until I decide to do something else.
Anyway, I hope this gives you some ideas even if it's "I wouldn't do that"...
I'll play with it a bit; I'm sure I'll make more changes as I get experience with the build... at 45 I'm still not totally happy with my Shield/Fire/Pyre tanker's build. It's always too many things we want and not enough slots to get them all. -
Many laptops run COH just fine... it does take a fairly beefy one to run Ultra Mode but standard graphics is a different story.
Case in point, I have a basic Asus I bought 2 years ago for roughly $500 with an Nvidia 8400M graphics card; it runs non-UM COH at around 40fps on it's 1440x900 15" screen. I also have a workstation class laptop I bought 3 years ago with an Nvidia 7950M graphics card and it runs non-UM COH at 50-60fps on it's 1600x1050 monitor and limited Ultra Mode at around 30-40fps.
I also have an Alienware MX11 with an Nvidia 330 that runs a 1300x768 screen at around 50fps but isn't UM capable.
My understanding from reading the forums is that while the Intel graphics can be problematic most people are able to get decent performance out of them on non-ultra mode graphics settings without having to turn off everything for performance.
Like everything else you tend to get what you pay for and a more powerful laptop will give you a better experience. However a decent machine will run the game, just not with all the eye candy turned on. -
Quote:Believe me this is definitely something I'm thinking about!I always recommend slotting Dark Regen well for accuracy; not only does it help for single targets, but also in the case of accuracy debuffs. Not having an attack hit usually won't lead to face plant, having Dark Regen miss at a critical certainly can. I learned this after some bitter early experiences with Nerva Spectral Demons when I couldn't get DR to hit to (literally!) save my life.
I intend on slotting to at least 60% accuracy in Dark Regen and I'll find somewhere for the Kismet Tohit IO.
Sailboat, that's an interesting idea on slotting, I'll look into it when I get home... for some reason I never installed Mid's on my work machine <whistles>
Unfortunately it's also the Boss' machine and he's one mean SOB... I should know since I see him ever morning in the mirror. -
Thanks guys, I'm rolling up one of each, Dark/Elec and Ice/Elec. I'm planning on leveling each into the 20's and then evaluating from there. Obviously inf isn't a big issue although I'm not looking for anything REALLY silly like the Glad Armor.
I'll certainly be looking over your thoughts on DA; it's a set I haven't played anything similar to. I'm on a bit more familiar territory with Ice as I've played several defense based characters and I do have some idea how to soft cap one -
Quote:Thanks for that info, that's what I was looking for. Hmm, I think you're right about /Elec... that solves the "secondary quandary"Like Rangle said, Jacob's Ladder is a pretty nice cone that is pretty easy to hit 3-4 foes with.
I really like Chain Induction since they buffed it a few issues back - it seems like it jumps a lot more often that it used to when I leveled up my Elec/Elec brute back in I8. My sense is that it plays a lot better than what it looks like on paper and it's fun to see it jump around from target to target.
I would be willing to bet that if you chose Elec Melee you will not be disappointed. I think Dark/Elec would be na interesting combination as I loved Dark Armor overall and consider it to be very sturdy once you get IOs in it.
Cheers
Dark/Elec or Ice/Elec is the question now; both intrigue me. Ice because I want to see if I can get it as tough as my Shield and it holds aggro so well. Dark simply because it's so different from anything I've played before.
I've a buddy who leveled a Dark/Dark tanker... admittedly he's not a tank player and I know his build wasn't optimal. He spent a ton of time face down, but he was several levels below the team and this was prior to SSK. Heck, he was depending on base empowerment stations for his KB protection.
I may just go ahead and roll one of each; I expect the Dark to be stronger early while the Ice will take awhile to get good. I assume with a Dark tank the keys are recharge, accuracy for Dark Regen and then as much def as you can put in? Well, and +end & +recovery. -
Some of my favorites.
The Flux arc in the Hollows is fun, but you'll find many vets have burned out on the Hollows in general as it was THE place to level from 5-15 back in the day and we ran those arcs dozens of times. The final mission is still one of the best low level missions in the blueside game.
As you've discovered the new Faultline arcs are pretty good and certainly worth running.
The Strigga Island series of arcs is worth doing; there's some nice temp powers and fun missions but the overall story may be a bit weak. It does open up one of the more fun TF's around, the Hess TF (25-30)
Croatoa from 25-35 is a fun zone with some pretty challenging enemies and the storyline is decent. Not on par with Freakolympics but it's fun.
Of course you don't want to miss the aforementioned Freakolympics arc, it's a lot of fun.
In the 30's there's the Doctor's Ally arc in Brickstown and several other fun Crey arcs. Also the Terra arc with Devouring Earth in Founder's Falls (I forget who gives these arcs, sorry) is well worth doing.
In the 40-45 range don't miss Tina MacIntyre in Portal Corporation (Peregrine Island) for the Praetorian War arc.
45-50 it's time for Maria Jenkins and the Hero's Hero arc, a continuation of Tina's 40-45 arc. Unai (forget his last name, he's next to Castle in the courtyard of Portal Corp) and his To save a thousand worlds arc is good as well.
Crimson has a nice arc that many hate to play since it's all Malta Group, one of the nastiest villain groups out there. Be prepared for massive end drains (Sappers, they can drain you dry in one shot), stuns (maybe that should be STUNS since they last frickin' forever) and mobs highly resistant to several damage types.
The Madam of Mystery (Carnies) arc is well worth doing and nicely written.. I believe it's 40-45.
There's others that are fun to do but those are the ones that stick out in my mind. Don't forget about Task Forces either; the revamped Positron is good to run, although a bit tough at 10-15, Synapse at 15-20 still is a grind fest. Sister Psyche is one of my favorites at 20-25 and Citadel from 25-30 can be fun. Manticore from 30-35 is a nice, relatively short, TF and Numina is... interesting at 35-40.
Although the rewards are severely nerfed the Eden Trial is something that everyone should do at least once; it's an awesome map and a lot of fun.
The Imperious Task Force (ITF) in Cimerora (requires the Midnight Club badge to get access... the access arc starts in the Steel University at 20+) is probably the most run TF in the game from 35-50.
My favorite TF is the Statesman TF (STF) for 45-50 characters... it's one of THE most challenging TF's in the entire game. -
Quote:One quibble here is the Recharge in the attacks... it isn't a bad idea but I'd say it's something to put into the 6th slot after accuracy, damage and endred.Because you are new I just don't see the benefit of providing a whole IO'd out build. It might help you a lot more to start with some of the real fundamentals and build from there. The suggestion above that had loads of 'everything' you should consider as a high end build. Don't even consider that until you are 50 and know how the game works.
Here's the basics.
The cornerstone powers to SS are Rage and Footstomp. Absolutely essentially. Rage should be 3 slotted with Recharge which makes it last as long as it takes to recharge. It gives you a lot of damage and good accuracy. Footstomp needs to be slotted with 1 accuracy, at least 1 or 2 endurance/recharge, and the rest damage. It needs 6 slots. You can get away with 3 slots on Rage if you are just beginning.
Your basic attacks should be slotted once for Accuracy, once for Endurance and once for Recharge. The rest should be damage, but no more than 3. Never put more than three SOs (single origin enhancements) into any ability as the 4th is basically wasted.
Quote:You'll need enough attacks that you can continually fight and not stop to wait for them recharging. That's something you'll have to get a feel for yourself. You need to balance recharge and endurance, and don't be hesitant to throw out a bit of damage so that you can actually keep fighting without running out of blue (endurance).
For Invulnerability you eventually want just about everything.
Unstoppable DOES have it's uses if you aren't soft capped defensively, (and I really don't suggest that the OP worry about softcapping until he has more experience under his belt) although I'm not sure it's a critical power. Yes, I used it on occasion back before IO's came into the game. Just be aware of the crash.
Quote:What's absolutely crucial is that you get your toggle resist armours and 3 slot them with Resist Damage and 1 slot them with Endurance. Get your Status shield and 1 slot that with Endurance. Now get Invincibility and 3 slot Defense and 1 slot Endurance. The rest you need to consider for yourself but there's a lot of great advice out there. Once again, eventually in your build you basically want all your defenses with the possible exception of your Tier 9 defence "Unstoppable".
Stamina pretty much MUST be in your build by 20. Sacrifice whatever else you think 'sort of has to be there' for later in order to get Stamina in there. Make sure it's three slotted with Endurance Modification ASAP.
That's about all I can think of just for right now. -
Hmm, good suggestions all, I think I'm narrowing it down to:
Ice/Elec
Ice/Dark
Dark/Elec
Dark/Dark
I think I've a pretty good idea of what to expect from Dark Melee but I'm uncertain about Electric Melee, specifically Jacob's Ladder and Chain Induction. On paper both look decent; how do they perform in game? In my back of the envelope build it looks like there's room for only 6 powers from the secondary.
I guess my decision on Dark Melee or Elec Melee comes down to Single Target or AOE. At some point I'll undoubtedly try both Ice and Dark armor; it's a question of which to roll now... decisions. -
I've been looking at Electric Melee and it certainly is different than I've played before. What's the verdict on Chain Induction? How about Jacob's Ladder? Those are the two powers I'm unsure about; it seems that Lightning Clap is a Hand Clap clone and equally worthless... everything else is fairly obvious. I'm looking at figuring out what to leave out of a tight build (heck, most all my builds are fairly tight).
I'm fairly unimpressed with Kinetic Melee... at least on a scrapper it was very unimpressive in it's performance.
In playing around with Mid's it seems fairly trivial to get ~47% S/L/E/N defense on an Ice without using EA although the resists are pretty low for when the RNG takes a dislike to you. Still, there is Dull Pain er, Hoarfrost and Hibernate to fall back on. -
Since my latest tanker, a Shield/Fire, is approaching 50 I'm looking toward a new tanker to roll up. I'm thinking of rolling something I haven't played before.
I've played Inv/Stone, Stone/EM, Stone/Fire and Shield/Fire to 50 (well, almost on the Shielder) and Fire/Fire to the upper 30's. I have played a tank-spec'd Fire/WP brute to 50 that I was... unimpressed with. Anyway, leaving out those primaries and secondaries I'm debating yet another tank, I'm just trying to decide on what.
For the primary Inv, Stone, Shield and Fire are out since I've already done those and WP is out due to poor aggro and my experience with that 50 Fire/WP brute.
For the secondary Stone, Fire and EM are out as I've done them and Dual Blades doesn't fit my idea of a tanker... too much focus on getting combination attacks off instead of managing aggro.
I'm kind of intrigued by both Dark Armor and Ice, I can also see a lot of IO potential in Electric but it's base level with SO's seemed lacking in limited testing during issue 17 closed beta.
So guys, of those three primaries which would you choose for a true aggro holding tanker and what secondary would you pair up? -
Never had one drop for me either although I'm not really in need of one... I almost always have a freespec on a character I'm considering modifying since I generally don't make changes all that often.
-
I've had purples drop in bunches and then long dry periods. I recall one mission where I got 2 (Hecatomb and an Unbreakable Constraint) and then periods of a month or more with nothing.
The market seems to have about the typical supply it's had all along so obviously they're still dropping, they're just not dropping to ME right now.
All bellyaching aside it seems fairly normal to me judging by the market supply and I've hit long dry spells on any number of occasions. Of course when I finally get one it'll be a Fortunata Hypnosis or something equally low value... the RNG definitely has a disliking to me. -
Quote:holy crap that's a lot of info. one minor problem with the two previous builds though... my character has a natural origin, not magicQuote:Okay, origin means exactly SQUAT in the game. So don't worry about what the build planner puts in for origin. Your toon will perform more or less identically regardless of origin. And at that point, you should really avoid using your origin-specific attacks.
- Which of the anemic starter attacks you get at level 1. Once you pass level 10 those starter attacks are pretty worthless (actually they're pretty worthless from level 1, they're the same as Brawl).
- What store you go to in order to buy Dual Origin or Single Origin enhancements. It's just flavor, as a Magic origin character slotting a magic damage SO gets the precise same bonus as a Natural origin does slotting a natural damage SO. (of the same level, DO/SO enhancements provide a slightly different bonus depending on your relative level. You can use a DO/SO enhancement that's from -3 to +3 of your current level.)
- The damage bonus you get with the Veteran Reward Nemesis Staff and Blackwand... you don't have to worry about these for awhile as they're 33 month veteran rewards.
-
Quote:This would have a lot to do with it; based on teaming with various Ice tankers they seem a bit squishier than average also. I'm sure that this can at least mostly be alleviated by good IO bonuses. I've a friend with a 40-something Ice tanker and he seems squishier than my 40 something Shield tanker. Maybe his build is off but he's very experienced and knows IO bonuses quite well.I've had an Ice/Axe tank for a while and he's one of the more fun tanks i have.. He's very Theme build (he's a viking and i made him before the SD/ Influx of them) and i love not having to worry about endurance thanks to having a full set of Performance Shifter in Energy Absorbsion... 3 baddies and i'm full again...
I can imagine a lot of people not playing Ice because
A) they don't like the look of the ice armor
or
B) Defense based tanks take a while to get going and you need to understand how Defense works to get the most out of them..
besides let everyone ignore the set... i like having a non-FOTM character
In my opinion the primary reason to roll Ice though is it's aggro management... nothing can grab aggro faster or hold it better than an Ice tank. -
Quote:Whoa that's a terrible case of altitis there Bill. You give me hope as my 40 some characters suddenly don't seem like a lot anymore170-some, probably closer to 180, over two accounts.
I just play what seems interesting to me, play what is tied in with friends' characters RP wise, play something I haven't played in a while, run through the servers to pay base rent and see someone I haven't played and play them, get a new idea and play them, etc.
(Also... defender != healer. Don't want to play like that, don't. :P Roll a Stormy. Roll a TA. Roll a controller and use the defender primary as a secondary. )
Edit: Correction. Just looked. 217 active characters. Most (total of both accts) on Victory (44) and Pinnacle (35,) fewest on Freedom (6) .
Personally I have several favorites that I play fairly regularly and others that I bring out when my buddies are doing something in that area. I tend to pull up a 50 to play more often than one of my lowbies... something that slows down the leveling of said lowbies.
There are a few characters I've more or less abandoned as I either lost interest or game changes made them no longer fun to play including a couple that reached 50. Heh, I just noticed that I've 5 characters between 41-45 that I keep meaning to push the rest of the way to 50, two of which have been there for over a year. One level 40 is sitting at over 700 days unplayed; during our January free transfers I moved him to clear the slot. -
Quote:I'd second this suggestion; Fire/Dark corrupter works really well solo. When you put several together on a team it really gets silly.Have you tried a Fire/Dark Corruptor? It's probably the most enjoyable alt that I've played. I didn't invest heavily in IOs, but I can only imagine it would be quite impressive with a nice build.
My SG started a 4 man superteam of Fire/Dark corrupters awhile back... by the time they reached the teens they were starting to show promise and once they got into the mid-20's they became really good.
Open up with 4 Fearsome Stares and EVERYTHING in a room is cowered and suffering from -60% tohit. Two of us drop Tar Patch and everyone drops Rain of Fire and Fireball. Hit any surviving bosses (everything else up to +2 LT's will be dead) with a few Blazes and on to the next group. Again FS the group, the other two drop Tar Patch and repeat the Rain/Fireball combo.
I haven't done very many teams that size that were that powerful in the 20's. -
If you want to really lay waste to things you could do a lot worse than a Shield/Fire tanker and Fire/Dark corrupter. That would offer a huge amount of AOE damage, excellent aggro ability and excellent durability. Having played both of those sets they're both quite capable alone and better together.
An alternative to the Fire/Dark corrupter might be a Fire/EM or Fire blaster for a bit more damage. Once the corrupter matures though it could well be superior thanks to the debuff in Tar Patch.
I would not suggest a Stone tanker for a duo team; the durability is way overkill and as a duo the tanker's damage output is more important. Offhand I don't know of any tanker combo that will deal more damage than Shield/Fire... I know that mine at 45 is now at mediocre scrapper level in kill speed and extremely durable. -
I've played a level-bumped 50 Elec/SS tanker during the issue 17 closed beta... it was ok but nothing wonderful. On the other hand it WAS an "instant 50" and only slotted with SO's so it was a long way from what it could be with IO slotting. At it's base level it had more issues with Carnies set to +2/8 than an old, SO only copy of CMA (Inv/Stone) at the same difficulty.
It's entirely possible that I hadn't figured out an optimal build or approach yet of course; it was the first time I'd ever tried either of those sets and I know CMA, even on SO's, extremely well. I can certainly see a lot of potential to be unlocked there with IO sets in the mix.
I'm in the same boat myself with my Shield/Fire approaching 50 and looking for a new tanker. Shield/SS could be a really good pairing for you; Shield's amazingly tough with just a modicum of IO slotting. In fact if you're willing to maximize your power selection you can get to roughly 42% def to all positions on SO's. So far I haven't found anything really threatening to my Shield/Fire since I softcapped him at 41.
Hmm, I've never truly played SS (the level bumped Elec/SS doesn't count), what to pair with it... this is kind of unusual but I keep coming up with Dark Armor. I've never played either set but it kind of intrigues me. -
Quote:I was comparing mentally the auras on the sets... you're correct that the other tools are the same no matter what primary you choose so I did overstate it comparing set to set. Comparing aura to aura it's an order of magnitude weaker but I'll admit that a WP who aggressively uses all his other tools is better than that. I was painting with too broad a brush there and I'll apologize for that.Okay... you're a little far gone with this one. I know you can Tank well and know Invuln like the back of your hand, but Willpower is a very strong set. And it does not have issues holding aggro. I know you don't need the tips in my guide to Tanking, but if you do those (get in the mob first, attack frequently, use Taunt as needed), WP has no issues. I mostly teamed with my WP/DB from 1-50, and he had no issues, no matter the team makeup. I was more aggressive with my tanking, as I knew the weaknesses, but I didn't have any issues.
I'm zealous about protecting my teams, too, and you can do that fine with WP. It's cool if you don't want to play the set for whatever personal reason, but don't oversell its aggro capabilities.
On the other hand I have teamed with a lot of WP tankers and I've only teamed with one who I'd trust to hold aggro. Yeah, bad tankers are everywhere but the design of WP makes it worse because unless the player is really working his butt off to hold aggro he's going to be worse than an equally mediocre Invuln, Shield, Ice, Stone etc who has a good aura to handle a lot of the heavy lifting.
Your more typical skranker character will loose a lot more aggro on WP than on any other primary... assuming a halfway decent build (never a safe assumption). WP seems like Empathy in a way; lots of people take it and ignore aggro like many Emps ignore everything but heals.
I'm sure I could do an adequate job with WP paired with a good secondary and I'm sure that many of the tanker forumites can also... we aren't typical tanker players though. My problem is that I know I can do a better job with a different primary so the set isn't attractive to me.
I'm about to ding 50 with my Shield/Fire tanker though and will be looking around for something else shortly... possibly that mothballed mid-30's Fire/Fire tanker or maybe roll a DA/something. I've been to 50 with Stone, Invuln and now (almost, dinged 45 a couple days ago) Shield. -
Quote:Whatever you want to believe. I would submit that your argument would be more effective if it was at least somewhat legible and backed by something more than:How would you not take health and stam. regen scrappers need regen hints health for more regen. and spines is a hella bad with end. so why not take stam?
trust me Mr. I have 15 lvl 50s me and someone have over 40+ each so we kind of know what we are talking about so you can just stfu no one cares about how high your post count is if your post are rubbishQuote:me and someone have over 40+ each so we kind of know what we are talking about so you can just stfu no one cares about how high your post count is if your post are rubbish
My apologies to the OP for this derailment of the thread. -
Quote:It isn't hard, all it takes is 75% defense to floor his tohit while the blue tower's up... starting from scratch that's less than 3 large purple inspirations.Did i really just read That your blaster can tank LR?...if so i want video of that.
It doesn't take resist to tank LR... I've been on STF's with most tanker primaries and no tanks at all. I've seen Ice tanks do it without real issue with a good defense build; Shield tanks can do it with decent defenses. I've seen several scrappers handle the job and been on a few where we had a force field controller and everyone had Assault/Tactics/Maneuvers from leadership where we ignored LR and took out the towers while he danced around and couldn't hit us. (We tossed RI on him to prevent pet spawns).
I can easily believe a blaster could do the job with 75% defenses. -
Quote:If you find you have end issues in the later game then yes, get fitness. On the other hand with basic IO set slotting you'll probably have considerable endred in your powers anyway and won't need it.For someone who has More than enough Game experience with all types of toons always get Fitness. id rather not get too blunt with you.
Nice, remember that Regen gets Quick Recovery at level 4, and it's stronger than Stamina (.33 instead of .25). There are even characters without Quick Recovery that don't need Stamina... my Archery/EM blaster comes to mind. 5 minutes of full speed attack before I need Conserve Power, my blue is full again when CP expires and I'm good for another 5 by which time CP is recharged. I've yet to have my end bottom out and not have CP available.
Yes, most characters benefit from Stamina. Some however don't benefit enough to justify the cost in power selection... like Regen or Willpower. Evaluate the character as you level up; if end is a problem then get Stamina. If you don't have end problems then consider if other powers are more useful to you. This is particularly true with Regen; you already have more recovery without Stamina than most characters have with it.
