It does? Hmm, it's been awhile since I've played my 44 Plant/Storm but I didn't notice that. It takes ranged damage sets, not targeted AOE; I have mine frankenslotted with Devastation & Thunderstrike including the hold proc.
-
Lightning Storm is single target and somewhat slow attacking unfortunately, although Freezing Rain might be useful depending on how much KB protection the bane bosses have. I can't remember running an STF with a stormy so I'm not sure if the KD will affect them. If nothing else it's a debuff on LR which is always a good thing.
-
Quote:You can, but they do have nasty ranged attacks. I've only faced LR on the STF but that pet nuke can be nasty if you don't have a way to keep it corralled. Part of the issue is that LR can summon enough to overload the aggro cap leaving the remainder to take potshots at you. PA helps but they aren't going to hold all that aggro.Whats your travel power? Could you not hover out of the way of the ambushes?
One of the best solutions I've found with my buddies on the STF is unfortunately not available to an Ill/Rad, that's Bonfire tossed under LR. It'll toss the pets away and they'll spend so much time getting up, running back and getting tossed again that they don't do much damage. -
Quote:I'll strongly second this. While I generally use Avira anti virus (also free) I've heard good things about AVG as well and you NEED to run something. Both Avira & AVG have a pretty small footprint and are very good at keeping viruses away.I recommend AVG Free Anti-Virus, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot Search-and-Destroy to help keep your computer free of unwanted malware!
I don't know what you're using but those three packages are all free to download and use -- maybe give them a try!
Hope to see you back in action soon, Nerf!

I'd stay FAR away from Norton and McAffey, in my experience both are bloated, highly intrusive things that miss more than they find.
Ad-Aware and Spybot are both very good programs, as is Malwarebytes. I run all three sporadically on my machine as some problems will be detected by one but not the others. Anti Virus runs ALL the time and Ad-Aware & Spybot run if anything seems off. Malwarebytes I usually run weekly.
The last time I had a virus was over 5 years ago thanks to this, although I've had Avira stop viruses several times a year so it's doing it's job. -
My typical approach is to use SO's until level 27 or so then start working on set IO's. I'm usually a mix of IO/SO until around 35 by which time I've completed an IO build.
I plan all my builds around level 35 IO sets and usually end up with mostly 30-38 level IO's for exemplar purposes... after all I'm really not giving anything up slotting a power with 35's than with 50's and the lower recipes are almost invariably cheaper.
As an example, the last character I leveled bought DO's at 12 and 17, SO's at 22 and 27, then started on the planned set IO build. From 27 until 35 I bought the sets as I could obtain them at reasonable prices filling in the gaps with SO's. By the time I reached 35 I had no SO's left on the build and pretty well kept it that way to 50. I tried to have most of what I'd need in base storage for when I leveled up, if I didn't have something, was on a team and leveled up then I'd hit a store for SO's to have something to fill the empty slots.
Quote:I imagine that's what he's getting at, I usually do the same if I'm not slotting something to ED cap... if it's Stamina for example three level 35 common IO's will put you at the cap so there's no point changing to 50's. On the other hand if you have a power slotted say with 5 Scirocco's Dervish and one common recharge (I do this on several characters) then I'll bump that common recharge to 50 as I'm still getting improvements.when you say you replace "regular IO's at 50" does that mean you leave the sets at 35?
Also, can you mix and match levels within a set? Say, a lvl 35 Perfect Zinger chance for psi damage and a lvl 50 Perfect Zinger Taunt Duration, would those equal 2 parts of the set for the bonuses?
Thanks again
Yes you can mix set levels, however if you exemplar you will loose set bonuses. In the case you mentioned you'd have the two slot bonus for Zinger down to level 47, then once you exemplared lower than that you'd loose the bonus.
As an example, you have a set with 5 IO's slotted, level 30, 32, 33, 35 and 50. At 50 you have all 5 bonuses. At 46 you loose the 5th bonus but you keep the 2nd - 4th bonus. At 31 you loose the 4th bonus but keep the 2nd & 3rd. You loose the 3rd bonus at 29. At 28 you loose all bonuses. The IO's themselves will still work (as long as you have access to the power that is) but the bonus only exemps 3 levels below the level of the IO. -
Quote:Undoubtedly so. Given the same numbers on defense which Brutes & Scrappers have the advantage in durability goes to the higher hit points.I would categorize having more HP being a bit tougher, but that's just me.
I will say that my BS/SD scrapper who's soft capped to all positions is way more than tough enough for all but the stupidest of the stupid scrapper tricks. The small edge in durability that a Brute's greater HP has probably wouldn't make a difference anyway since if you're in far enough over your head that the scrapper's faceplanting you're probably far enough that the Brute wouldn't survive much if any longer itself.

I've been playing around a bit lately with a Spine/Electric and it seems to be pretty dang good so far... I just hit 33 with him and I'm still on SO's. I rolled him up after watching several buddies with Spine/Elec scrappers... it's an AOE monster but a bit squishy. Endurance isn't THAT big an issue with him either; he's playable with all (very) yellow SO's.
I've two high level Shield scrappers, one Broadsword/Shield at 50 (soft capped to all positions) and one Fire/Shield at 47 that's lacking in Ranged defense at the moment due to an incomplete build... I think I'm soft capped to melee and almost to AOE but still only in the high 30's for ranged. Of the two the BS/SD is better AOE and defensively but the Fire/SD seems to hit a bit harder in single target. Both are quite capable, although both are somewhat late bloomers due to the nature of defense sets.
I also have a Spine/Regen and Broadsword/Regen at 50; both are older characters and neither has had extensive IO work... the Spine/Regen is even a HO build. Still, both are competitive in today's game although not as dominant as they were prior to the Regen nerfs of yesteryear. Good damage output but very unforgiving of a slow finger on the heal buttons in the high levels. -
Correct me if I'm wrong, but on the last dXP weekend I remember that it specifically did NOT apply to AE. If that's the case then any AE exploit would be fairly meaningless in context of double XP.
I'm still somewhat amazed that they released AE allowing it to give XP in the first place; I'm not at all surprised that players find exploits as fast as the Dev's fix them, I expected that from day one. -
I seem to get a purple drop on average every other month or so figuring from when they were introduced. Very occasionally I get a couple in a short period then usually nothing for a long time.
In the last week I've gotten FIVE Calibrated Accuracy drops. I counted them... FIVE of the worthless (in every sense of the word) pieces of junk. The most valuable drop I've gotten this week was a Mako that sold for around 3 million. On the other hand I had a raft of fairly high dollar drops about a week ago that were in the 20-40 million range so as the saying goes average is average. -
Quote:Definitely this. On Guardian anyway there's usually considerable activity on the various global channels; that's where I go when I'm looking to fill a team.Head down to your server's forum and ask what are the best global channels. A good bit of team recruiting happens on the globals, NOT in broadcast.
Remember that most of the game is instanced and your requests in broadcast aren't visible to anyone in an instance or another zone. Messages on the global channels are visible in instances and across zones (even across factions).
Welcome back! -
Quote:No, it needs to be healing OTHERS. It's easy to get if you've a few players in the SG, I don't remember having a lot of trouble with either of my main SG bases and 4 active players.Aha!
Thanks for the clue-in.
So, I need to heal 5 mill, while is sg mode....
Crap, I mainly play melee. How is a bullet-headed thug supposed to get heal credit? Does dull pain count?
It sells green & blue inspirations as mentioned and it will pay vendor prices for recipes and salvage. That comes in quite handy since in almost all cases vendors pay more for common IO recipes than the market does... I don't even bother looking; I just sell off any commons I don't intend to craft. -
Quote:I've had good luck with Asus; I've three of their low end ($400-500) machines that have been very reliable. For a variety of reasons, their purchase got delayed. Reopening things now, the leading contender is the Asus G53JW-A1, which seems to meet all the requirements, from the right vendor all the strong preferences, and several of the nice extras including one that wasn't practical last post, a USB 3.0 port. The GTX 460M should provide respectable CoH performance, and at least on paper it looks like the airflow design would allow it to reach its full potential more than a lot of other designs.

A price point in the $1,400 - $1,500 range is pretty darn good for what it's got IMO. The main problem is that they're in short supply, but they can wait if necessary. Rumor has it there was a small early-November shipment that didn't cover pre-orders most places, there is/will be a small-to-medium mid-late November shipment, and a much larger early-December shipment. Intention is to have it in hand before Christmas holidays, which seems doable
* Anyone with an Asus G53JW-A1 care to comment? Any other comments from close relatives in the product line?
* Recommendation on retailers? At this point the leading contenders are Newegg, BTOTech, and Xoticpc; I've not dealt with the latter two before. BTOTech is interesting because it's got a full configuration menu with some options not available from other sources; Xoticpc is interesting because it's got the no-questions 15-day return policy; both seem to be knowledgeable about gamers.
Edit: BTOTech seems to also have a 15-day return, and Xoticpc seems to actually have some variants in stock again, and more options that I saw before. So a pretty close tossup here.
On retailers I wouldn't be at all concerned about Newegg but I know nothing about the other two. -
Quote:Well depending on how long ago you left you may find little or huge changes in leveling speed. Some time ago, I forget exactly when, they went through and revised the XP for mobs in order to "smooth" out the rough places in leveling... primarily in the late 30's. What we got was a substantial increase in leveling speed across all levels, particularly the 1-20 range.Nice to know much hasn't changed since I left
. Let me ask this as well. Has being able to up the baddies in your mission improved leveling of your toons later on in the game or made missions that much harder?
The new difficulty settings have also increased speed and increased the challenge depending on how you set it, you have much more control over just how hard your missions are. If you think you're uber powerful you could set your slider to +4 mobs and an 8 man team. That would have you facing +4 mobs spawned for a full team even when you're solo. If even that's not enough challenge you can try those settings facing Malta, and if that still isn't enough you can turn on AV's while solo and do Maria Jenkin's arc.
On the other end of the scale you could set your difficulty to facing -1 level mobs spawned for a solo character if something's too hard. If you want huge groups of easy mobs then you can set the slider to give you -1 mobs set to an 8 man team... that will give you massive numbers of blue mobs. -
Quote:They are fun aren't they? I've done a few myself, the most memorable was a Citadel TF back when the Warwolves were bugged and spawning at level 35... on a TF that caps at 30.LOL!
All-scrapper tf's are always glorious bloodbath's.
GLORIOUS I SAY.
All scrapper TF's tend to run a bit differently than normal... for some reason the phrase "herding cats" comes to mind.... -
Quote:Good point, I know when I'm putting together a PuG for the STF one of the things I look for are Controllers & Defenders. However, while I may look for those I'll give a try with whatever someone wants to bring along. If we end up with 6 scrappers and a pair of 'trollers I'll run with it; we may have a rough spot or two but it should be doable as long as everyone knows what they're doing. If you want to be as close to needed as possible, play a Controller, Defender or Corrupter.
While you're not "needed" per say, you will be welcome on nearly any team you ever join.
General teaming though I really don't much care, just bring whatever you like to play; odds are good that there will be enough good players to carry any dead weight. And if not then at worst you get a story to tell your friends. Most of us don't sweat the occasional team wipe. -
Quote:I haven't had any personal experience with them but from what I've read they're both quality manufacturers. I've mainly used Nvidia in my builds, not really from loyalty per se, just because at the times I looked for a card they were the right price/performance. Right now I'd be strongly tempted to go ATI for the same reasons. If the situation holds in a year I'll probably use ATI when I upgrade.Call Me Awesome, would you recommend XFX or Sapphire for brands on the ATI cards?
I've seen lots of posts about the 5770 card and at least 6 months ago it was a great buy in the price/performance category. As I recall from the Ultra Mode beta testing Positron was commenting that the card was performing "surprisingly well". -
Father pretty well covered the cards; as a suggestion I wouldn't even consider buying a video card from Best Buy, you'll get screwed on the pricetag.
Check out www.newegg.com and look for the cards Father Xmas suggested for you; they'll have about the best prices around and they're totally reputable. Typically when I order something I have it in my hands in 2 days.
On brand names I've had good luck with Evga and Asus; don't buy Diamond Multimedia, it's one of the few brands that trip the "Danger Will Robinson" flag due to poor quality.
Heh, I just realized that I'm dating myself a bit there. -
What do you consider higher levels? For me I consider higher levels the 40-50 range and I usually get just under one level per playsession on most characters in that range playing about 2-3 hours at a time.
The mid levels I consider 25-40 and they usually go a bit faster... at least one level per session in the 25-35 range tapering off to about a level per session from 35-40.
Low levels are 1-25 and they fly by; I usually get a brand new character to level 12-15 in a session and to 25 in three.
My average time in today's game to take a character from 1-50 is a little less than 100 hours.
Like Dark Tower said though Kelds now unlock at level 20, not 50 anymore, which I personally think was a questionable decision on the Dev's part. Kelds are NOT easy to play, there was a reason that they originally required a level 50 character to unlock. They are NOT epically powerful... nor are they weak. What they really are is complicated; they're really three very different characters in one and each form plays dramatically differently than the others.
Most people who got a character to 50 in the old days and rolled up a Keld ended up deleting the character in the teens simply because it played so differently than anything else. Yes they can be quite powerful in the late game, Warshades especially. They're an advanced AT designed for experienced players. I enjoy them but they're definitely harder to play well. -
Quote:It does nothing unless you have an enemy in range. Turn it on and watch your numbers when you have mobs fighting you. You get (tanker numbers) 6% defense for the first mob in melee range and 1% for each additional mob in melee range up to 10. Therefore you have (unenhanced) 6% defense with one mob in melee up to a max of 15% with 10 mobs in melee. Slotted to ED cap you'll get 9.4% defense for the first mob up to 23.4% defense for a full 10.I think invincibility may not be working. When I go into combat attributes and look at my defense values, invincibility is not showing up as one of them. There is also no difference in any of the defense values from when I have Invincibility off and when I have it on. I am not sure if this is a bug in showing the value, or if invincibility is not working, but I think it definitely need to be looked at.
So the bottom line is no enemies in melee = no defense from Invincibility. No bug there. -
InUse, it's really a question of what role you want to play. Of course with the way the game works there's no "role" that's required... except for damage.
As I mentioned in the other thread on the Tanker boards, yes my BS/SD scrapper CAN main tank the ITF. That build also cost nearly 1.5 billion inf and it can't do it as well as my Shield/Fire tanker can on a build costing way less than 100 million.
In order to manage the aggro for the team on an ITF with the scrapper I had to work my butt off and my damage output suffered because of that. The SD/Fire tanker was MUCH easier to manage aggro with and I may well have been doing close to the same damage simply because I didn't have to work so hard at managing aggro.
What I'm getting at here is that while I CAN tank with my scrapper it's MUCH easier to do with a tanker. The scrapper's extra damage was largely irrelevant in tanking simply because I was too busy with aggro to devote enough attention to damage.
I can also tank with my Ill/Rad controller for that matter quite well and both my Kelds (peacebringer and warshade) can handle the job adequately in Dwarf form. I can even manage aggro (not really tank but accomplishing the same purpose) with my Dark/Dark defender. And for that matter my Archery/EM blaster can kill an entire spawn from 80' away in 3 attacks. That's part of the beauty of this game, there's more than one way to accomplish anything.
Want to know what the most unbalancing, fastest killing team in the game is? 8 Fire/Rad controllers... teams of them have crushed the Statesman's Task Force in around 25 minutes. A group of them can literally move through a mission killing everything almost as fast as they can run down a corridor.
I've run nearly everything in the game with virtually any combination of AT's you'd care to name. The STF is one of the hardest challenges on the hero side game and I've done it with lots of different groups both with tanks and without. Obviously the tactics change based on the group but it can be done with any combination of competent players. I've had easy runs with teams you'd think would struggle and I've had failures with teams that from the AT's present you'd expect to breeze through.
Competent players behind the keyboards are vastly more important than any AT or build. Nothing in the game NEEDS any particular AT. -
Quote:On an Ice I might be tempted by the Medicine pool; with decent slotting Aid Self can get down to a 10 second recharge and it heals 40% of your base HP. I used to have it on CMA before issue 13 and the buffs to Invuln, I usually frankenslotted 3 Heal/recharge IO's and an interrupt IO. You'll probably find it useful for the times when something nasty gets through your defense and Hibernate or Hoarfrost aren't up.This was pretty much what I was thinking anyway, and was just brainstoming the idea of having it as an aggro panic power (Even though such situations are unlikely.)
I think my final opinion then is either taking Leadership Pool for Vengence (dropping Smashing Blow all together and using Brawl as a 3 slot Mule for that E/N defense if I can't get it other places.)
Or going Medcine Pool for the aidself, dropping Permafrost and slotting Winters Gift.
EDIT: Prety much whatever I take its always going to end up as a situation power.
I'm thinking I'll probably add it in on CMA for i19; I have 2 "uncommitted" power choices in my new build. -
-
My opinion? Presence is among the more useless pools in general and even more so for a tank; you already have far superior tools for aggro management. I wouldn't even consider it on an Ice tanker; you already have the best aggro tools in the game at your disposal in your primary and secondary.
-
Quote:You're correct of course, and I agree that average to average on tank/scrapper damage it's probably going to end up not too terribly far from a 50% advantage to the scrapper. The OP was talking about the maximum attainable however, and that really skews things when you start talking about the bleeding edge. The Scrapper forum is a hot bed of edge-case builds. Going from memory, most if not all of the really high Scrapper DPS numbers posted in that Pylon thread come from DM/* and/or */SD builds with fully saturated AAO and/or Soul Drain. Even if the players in question routinely play to maximize those abilities, we are by definition talking about exceptional style of play.
Then we have selection bias: Tanker players (going by the forum) are less inclined to maximize DPS to begin with -- and in those cases where Tanker players do maximize offense, they're less likely to care as much about single-target DPS. From what I've seen, Tanker players are generally less inclined to maximize their builds at all (whether it's for defense, offense, or just generally) than the average Scrapper-forum poster.
And then, of course, there's the most obvious factor: Those numbers are posted in the Scrapper forum. How many Tankers even showed up there to report their numbers?
I did see a post by one of the scrapper regulars on DPS from a tanker:
So I guess 150+ dps is possible on a tank, at least under optimal conditions and undoubtedly an absolutely optimized build.
On the recharge front looking at two sets I'm familiar with, Broadsword and Stone Melee... both considered slow sets. Here's the times for the top three ST attacks in each set:
BS - Hack 8s, Disembowel 10s, Headsplitter 14s
SM - Stone Mallet 8s, Heavy Mallet 12s, Seismic Smash 20s
Hmm, looking a bit closer I see that Headsplitter has a base damage of 187 while Seismic Smash has a base of 158 so it looks like you may be correct.
We are however drifting into the realm of theorycrafting instead of practical applications. I think the original premise, that scrappers have roughly a 50% damage advantage, is as the saying goes "close enough for Government work" -
Quote:My thanks, that's what I was looking for! Here is a list of all the times listed in the thread
and this is a list of just the scrappers
Looks like my memory of top scrapper DPS approaching 300 wasn't far off the mark. Now I wonder if any tankers have broken 150; I'll give it a try with my Shield/Fire/pyre sometime.
There's been a discussion on the Tanker boards of top level scrapper vs top level tanker damage... my estimation was that at the bleeding edge scrappers probably had about double the damage and on the durability end tankers probably had double the survivability. That's comparing best combination to best combination of course.
