so since my bf Old Man (some of you may know him in game) has not had a computer since mayish bc his died(RIP) hehe but he has been using mine and I have had about 3+ viruses or malware on it in that time ugh... Heri can attest he has been here before or just after it happened hehe....now old man has become prficient at removing what ug my computer has... my computer is just over a year old and I never had this issue with until HE started using it regularly... he would only use for gaming before that bc it kicks @$$ compared to his old computer...

any way the reason for this rant is to tell you all why i havent been on anymore then I can bc he is either on the computer when I have time to play or is on the computer trying to fix it hehe ... after this rant is over and my updater is updated I will be playing for a bit hope to see you in game and maybe over the next month or so i can get the computer more from him since his days of switched and arent the same as mine ....

Love your wonderful trouble maker

yup, been there. Old Man's superpower seems to be wrecking Nerfy's computer's with viruses lol.

idea Nerfster, maybe create a login separate account for Old Man, so at least if it happens again you can see what account if affects, and if it's his, bingo. That and it should only affect that account.

Remind me to bring some virus and malware programs in January lol

I recommend AVG Free Anti-Virus, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot Search-and-Destroy to help keep your computer free of unwanted malware! I don't know what you're using but those three packages are all free to download and use -- maybe give them a try!

Hope to see you back in action soon, Nerf!

I'll strongly second this. While I generally use Avira anti virus (also free) I've heard good things about AVG as well and you NEED to run something. Both Avira & AVG have a pretty small footprint and are very good at keeping viruses away.

I'd stay FAR away from Norton and McAffey, in my experience both are bloated, highly intrusive things that miss more than they find.

Ad-Aware and Spybot are both very good programs, as is Malwarebytes. I run all three sporadically on my machine as some problems will be detected by one but not the others. Anti Virus runs ALL the time and Ad-Aware & Spybot run if anything seems off. Malwarebytes I usually run weekly.

The last time I had a virus was over 5 years ago thanks to this, although I've had Avira stop viruses several times a year so it's doing it's job.

Vivian and CMA have it right. the 3 active programs I tend to recommend are AVG, Avira, and Avast!, the last one even more for you Pirate types all 3 are pretty vicious in keeping your computer protected real time, and I know at least one of them keeps itself updated.

And for getting the nasty malwares and viruses off once they're there, Ad-Aware, Spybot and Malwarebytes are awesome at that.

Those programs are what I was gonna bring over and install/run over in January if needed heh

You may also want to go to the Windows Update site (if you are running Windows) and download all of the security patches, hotfixes and updates available for your computer. If you've never done it, this process will involve you downloading a lot, doing several restarts and going back to the site again and again until you have them all and Windows Update sees no further updates available for your computer.

The problem with web sites and browsers in general is that they provide a route for ActiveX and other exploit scripts to run that can bypass or disable many counter-intrusion programs. Also, bear in mind that AVG and other applications depend on "signatures" which are only derived after something new has been found -- thus there is always a window of opportunity in which something new comes out, before it is detected, for it to infect your machine. Until a signature is extracted from it and that signature spread out to all the various anti-virus / anti-spyware / etc packages via updates, everyone is at risk.

One way to keep your system safe even against these new and unknown threats is to increase the Security Level in your browser to "High" or "Paranoid". This will restrict them from accepting unsigned cookies, running scripts and doing other things are are generally access routes for things you don't want getting into your computer. While it can often make your browsing experience a little bumpier, this precaution can often prevent access even by new exploits before patches are released or signatures derived to protect users from them.
