  1. Just to clarify my stance one last time.

In game cannon states that six years ago the entire world (well maybe not Arachnos) joined together to fight the invading Rikti.

Many many lives were lost and all major cityies devestated, six years post war the richest most important city in the world still hasn't rebuilt its self fully.

Real world situations ceased being useable at that point, the countryies in CoX are simply not in the same state as they are in the real world.

North Korea hates South Korea? They probably still do, would they do anything about it? No they are still rebuilding from the recent Rikti attacks if not from the 2002 war.

Even if you go the Marvel route and have contries and events that are suspiciously like real world events, you have to remember they are still rebuilding from attack by the Rikti, the people still living infear of a new wave of drop ships.

Who cares about the Muslims across the border, from the sky is where a real threat one that killed your wife/sibling/parents/child six years ago/ two months ago may just suddenly attack.
  2. From the ingame evidence of the world state, you'd have to pull what Recluse did or what Nemsis keeps trying to do.

Create a big international disaster, start a war or something so everyones eyes are diverted to one corner of the globe, then quickly sieze power some where else while everyone is trying to solve the other crisis.

But to claim your taking advantage or real world situations or doing so with poorly done parodyies of real world situations it doesn't really fit the political stage as presented in game and its also in poor taste.

So would be Mugabe esq dictator in Africa won't be able to attack his neighbouring country, his people don't want to risk not having enough soldiers to fight the Rikti, in turn he can't just force his will on his people, because his generals don't want to risk being in a cival war when the next atack arrives.

If you read Watchmen you can see how simply one man brought about World Peace at an even more untrusting stage of history.

    [/ QUOTE ]
There are a couple of really important points here, but the first one is very simple.

Dude. The Watchmen is fiction. There are no world wars in Postman Pat either but it doesn't have a lot of weight in a discussion of real human nature.

Second. You don't think that the actual existance of Gods is perhaps a bit bigger news to humanity than just that there is life in alternate dimensions?

Statesman is Zeus incarnate. Hellions actually summon power from hell. Hell exists! Demons exist. The Circle of Thorms are real wizards. None of these revelations actually changed the broadest events of History. The Second world war not only still took place, but despite flying super-heroes on each side, all the same events, right up to the invention, and use of the atomic bombs, happened to the same timescales as our owm.

I personally think that's a big clue as to the likelihood that the hand of fate will continue to see the two universes mirror each other. This is deliberate. ((Because this is a commercial game, and they want people to be able to pick it up and get immersed without having to read an encyclopedia)).

We can sit at the sidelines all we like and say, "You know, once you have the least inkling that Hell is genuine, that has to change how you live your life, right?". We can say "You know, once you know magic exists, wouldn't the entire world be training magicians in the way they train scientists or doctors?" ((And most especially should have altered the events leading to the Second World war)).

Yet events from the 1920s unfold to mirror the politics of our own world. 80 years of men that can survive a direct hit by a tactical nuke did not change the nuclear arms race happening. 80 years of men who could fly through the skies on their own super-abilities did not stop the development of warplanes, helicopters, etc as weapons of war.

I have to say that Gods, super-heroes, magic, demons, and alternate dimensions are just as big a deal as the genuine existance of aliens. But its like Global Warming - most people choose to pretty much ignore it feeling unable to do anything about things on that scale.

Thirdly and finally for now: the small dictatorship issue. I've already shown hard examples of where having a bigger enemy, right in your face, does not prevent you just using the gun you are given to fight with to shoot the guy you don't like next to you.

Way back in history, warring tribes in Africa suddenly found themselves both invaded by white-skinned 'alien' men from a far away homeland. Your logic says that they should have ceased all domestic dispute and united against this far greater common enemy who would from that day forward prove the greater threat and change their world forever.

What really happened in many cases was that they just sought technology from the white-men to be able to shoot the tribesmen next door rather than spear or knife him. They'd in fact use the invasion of the whites as even more excuse to prey on their neighbours, and sell them as slaves to the whites.

A one-off? Try looking up the history of the Native Americans. Did all inter-tribal wars cease with the arrival of the far greater foe, visibly alien? Nope. The tribes did not unite until far too late, and only then once they had already lost their homelands, lost their nations, and had nothing left to lose.

The small dictators and tyrants of the world are actually more free than ever under a Rikti threat. Because the rest of the world HAS to defend them to prevent the Rikti gaining their lands to build a portal in. The world has to consider giving them better arms, technology, etc, and we know theywon't all agree to that. The UN would actually have far more tensions, as communist nations want to supply the latest suuper-weapons to other communist countries, while the very vocal anti-communist nations would be vehemently opposed, but actually powerless to stop it without invading and sparking a war.

However, the Rikti attacked in a manner to win a war. They focused on taking down opposition first, thus the heaviest concentration of prolonged all-out warfare happened in Paragon City, against the heroes and magicians who offered the strongest resistance.

The Rikti don't stop wars and political tension. They actually increase it, by making rikti-resistance yet anther scarce resource that is seen to be

hoarded in the USA and not given to others.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Just to point something out.
If you were correct that this fictional world remains fractured with countryies at war despite the unifying effects of a global attack.

Then why hasn't Nemisis done what the LoRDs are planning to do?

Why has he had to go and create chaos if its ment to already exist.

Why the varied plans, the mass waste of resources the spoliers the whole second Rikti War when he could just replace a dictator or two with one his mechanical creations and spread the same type of destruction the LoRDs plan?

And lastly to write off Watchmen, Independance Day etc as just fiction and then try to impose real world conditions on another fictional world, a fictional world mind you that is closer to other works of fiction in history rather than our own, its a bit arrogant isn't it?

To say CoX world would act like this and only this!

Despite time and time again fictrional universes going for the whole unite against the common foe.

Particularly since their is no evidence in any of the timelines or story arcs in game to show any signs of unrest in foreign nations.

In fact even game play mechanics back me up, you find two sets of rival mobs say warriors and freakshow, they fight each other you show up as a common enemy they both attack you.
  4. [ QUOTE ]
What about Nemesis? Certainly he uses the chaos to try and further his course. Why should he be the only one?

    [/ QUOTE ]

He has several alternative Earths worth of resources at his command, and he does it on a interdimensional level.

I'm not saying that taking over a country by taking opeertunity of chaos is a bad thing, I'm just saying that using real life examples even with subtle name changes shouldn't work after all CoX Earth has an entirely different global situation going on.

More likely you'd have to start trouble between several nations first and then pick one to take over.

and if you take Nemisis as an inspiration you will see what I said is the way he also does it.
  5. [ QUOTE ]
During such an event every nation would try to gain power out of it in order to be stronger then its old enemy. Weaker countries will try to make alliances. Rich/strong countries like the USA would deffiantly try to copy the technology and keep for themselves.

Having an alien race invading will not remove all racism, hate and such in the world. That's is an utopia that is not gonne happen. It will give a common enemy to be dealt with, but that only last for the majority of that battle.

After that the human race will go on the same foot as before. And leaders would plan in advance...

In all of history arms dealers work best during wars and conflict. From every war someone will get rich. An alien invasion will not be any different. I am sure that between all the humans on earth there will be humans trying to betray the whole race by alliancing with the Rikti too. We done it before countless times, we will do again.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Oh sure you'd have the odd scumbag trying to make money or power out of it. But wars would pretty much stop, you must remember while we as heroes and villians get to do missions that reveal all sorts of things about the Rikti to everyoner else, all the generals and normal people they are just space aliens that show up once in a while and Blitz the Earth.

  6. [ QUOTE ]

Ever seen "A Few Good Men"?
    Ever seen "Mississipi Burning"?
Ever read the history of The League of Nations?
Ever read the history of the Suez Crisis?

Even entire nations can be petty, so you can always find petty individuals within one, no matter what outside events apply. Sad but true. No wonder the fictional version is so much more commercial.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The difference being in those films and real life events there were no space aliens attacking the Earth.
As said before why hate the black man, when the green squid wants to kill you both with his ray gun?

You've got to remember that to the common man in the CoX universe the Rikti are just space aliens that might attack again at any moment. Goverments aren't going to weaken their armed forces fighting each other when at any moment the sky could darken and more ships appear.
  7. [ QUOTE ]

Britain still has a monarchy. America still has a president. The Second world war still happened, and still was fought to pretty much the same timelines and devastations, right down to the world's first two nukes being dropped on Japan.

If super-heroes didn't change that event, the instant anihilation of hundreds of thousands, and the ongoing cancer that continues to this day, then I think there's a strong hint in there that most of the world is largely as we know it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

However there was also the Rikti War, whike superheroes might not be enough to stop decades of hate, an invasion from outer space (as far as the average man knows) would be.

Why hate the man in the next country when you've lost loved ones to a Rikti Dropship?
Hell if we've seen anything from Sci-Fi films its that mankind joins together when attacked by a threat from the stars.
The man from the enxt coutnry may be the wrong colour, tribe or religion but he is still a man and not a purple people eater from outer space.

    Ever read Watchmen?
  8. [ QUOTE ]
he... Nazi germany the arian german was much much better off too...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Bearing in mind that part of Dr Dooms origin story is that his father and mother were persecuted for being gypsies its kinda hard to imagine he'd be going around purging people because of their ethinicity (which is why I despise that hack Hudlin for trying to make out Dr Doom was a racist)

Likewise pretty much the only freedom denied to the people of Latveria is their right to try and kill Dr Doom.
  9. [ QUOTE ]
ok.. first of all we come here to the same prob as the how to rp a villain thread... what does a good Super villain do... and how to proceed in coming to that goal.

Writers of fiction will use real countries...

If we are making up a country or city it will be based on or placed in a real country. it needs to be for the look and feel. Either be an land like haiti, an african country, and asian country, or an islamic country.

The political atmosphere of the fictional place would be the same as the place it was based upon. And the things we would do to gain control.. even if just from behind the throne, would be just as bad.

We accept that, even though not always shown like that, Dr. Doom tortures and excecutes. He used mass destruction weapons to strike fear etc. And its obviously a central european country... largly based upon those country's that where in turmoil during the 60's.

If in RP these actions are not ok... then the whole ability to play a super villain is taken from us. The plot device we come up with is sounding so fitting because its what would work. It is thinking on a grand scale a super villain would do.

What do you think would happen if any of those zillions super villain plans of Red Skull, Dr. Doom etc. would have succeeded. A thing we as super villains expect. We dont plan to be stppped by heroes you know...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually in a world where Dr Doom ruled the world would be far better off.

Take Latveria, when Doom came to power (the people were on his side in this) it was a thrid world country with starving people and random racial purgings.

Dr Doom in the space of time brought it to a level of health care and social care that makes a mockery of every 'free' country in the Marvel world. The people don't even need to work as robotic farms and factoryies provide for their every need.

In face the only time the people in latveria suffer is when some random Hero group trys to take Dr doom down.

In comparasion if you take Wakanda the country ruled by 'hero' Black Panther you get an arrogant country that holds it self racial superiour to the rest of the world, holds it self in isolation from the rest of Africa and does nothing as surrounding countryies are racked by plagues and drought. despite Wakanda openly boasting to have the technology to prevent this they do nothing.

Now if Dr Doom could get over his obsession with Reed Richards he could build up his country by simply pointing out to the people in the surrounding nations just how good they'd have it if they became part of Latveria
  10. The problem with using 'how I'd take over the real world" as a guide for your characters actions in game, is that the game world is not the real world.

Or to put it another way do you really think the problems in the middle east would be like they are in real life, if instead of dealing with bombing each other they suddenly got blitzed by a race of moon men?

Why would you hate the man of a slightly different colour or creed, when you've both had your homes bombed by a race of squid things that don't even have faces?

While your likely to have a whole new heap of problems, nations that outlaw super powers or execute mutants or whatever. But chances are real world political situations that we suffer from wouldn't exist in the world of Paragorn city simply because of the first Rikti war.

Well, my bowel movements happen for wholly scientific reasons, but still I wouldn't actually call bowelmoviology "science".

However, this is not the first thread SweetChilliKiddy has derailed by twisting the meaning of words and statements for his futile attacks on Shannon. This child is just too arrogant and naive to realize that what he believes to be a flamethrower is merely a BIC lighter... with no gas on top of that.

You would however if you were having problems with your bowel movements yeah?

    The Nomads

Name: Currently using the name Battle Unit omega, refuses to ackwoledge her name until she gets redemption.

Reason: Unable to gain actual Hero Lisence due to psychological problems. Has toruble fitting in with others due to her upgrades constantly point out the best way to 'silence' them. Along with various combat upgrades she has an encyolpedic knowledge of science and technology of the civilisation that built the villian Battle Unit Omega.

Wiki: none but that reminds me I have one to update and two to create.

Appearance: A little girl covered in surgical scars with various cybernetic enhancments added to her. The cybernetics appear to be arcahic in design and sound like they are dirven by gears of some sort. Her combat armour appears to have been built from things found in a junkyard and yet is far more effective than it appears it should be. Personality wise she is very quite around others.

Powers: Aside from her cybenetic enhacments making her more resilent in combat, she is a genius at adapting techology. Using the data libary stored in one of her enhacments she is able to construct technology that seemingly ignores the rules of common sense. For example using parts of scrap metal and discarded electronics found in a junkyard she has constucted a energy bladed sword capable of in one setting tempoary disabling nerve systems and in the other cutting with an atomicaly fine edge.

Contact: Current dwelling is a disused water treatment plant that currently gives out unsual data transmissions and power readings.

    Hmmmmmm

Wouldn't happen to have place for a part homeless little girl part cybernetic shock trooper, with a enclyclopedic knowledge of the science of a dead planet and a painkiller addiction?
  15. Possible reason to world travel.....

    1) Having finally had enough of the whole 'we rule the world' [censored] a bunch of Praetorian versions of characters storm a portal lab to look for a world that they themselves can take over.

    2) Having had enough a bunch of Praetorians try to take down the current regiem however their entire group was led into a trap and banished to another dimension.
  16. It all depends on what type of villian.

Sure if you play some sort of psycho whack job like the Joker or Red Skull esc Nazi Supremists then you are going to have a harder time hanging with others or finding a reason why your character would relax in a bar with people he/she hates.

On the other hand if you play the less colourful villian type like Bond villian then you've got a public front with which to play with millionair playboy, media mogul etc, but you also own a volcano lair with a death ray and hundreds of themed flunkies walking round. In which case your maintance of your public persona becomes a job to draw away suspiscion

After all the rich handsome Justin Blanks who was seen guzzling champagne at Pocket D can't possibly be the Hooded Viper who robbed a weapons research lab later that night with the aid of the Snake Squad.

I mean you don't literaly have to be a psycho whack job to be a succesful villian take The Rogues from DCs Flash comics, a bunch of ordinary joes who put on costumes and rob banks just because its easier than getting a real job.
  17. Strange Plant Man Attacks Skyway Police Depatment

In the early hours of the morning the Skyway City Police Depatment was atatcked by an individual belived to be the criminal known as Cactus Brawler. Last seen after shortly after the Rikti attacks he had been belived killed or retired law enforcment authorities.

It is not his attack on the police that raises questions however as the suspect is a member of the anrachist terroirst group known as The Terra Liberation Front, it is his method. Despite damage to property exceeeding $100 000 and multiple injuries to police personel there have been zero fatalities during the incident.

Police were drawn from stations across Paragorn City to drive back this criminal.

Detective Westbrush had this to say
"Obviously the combinded force of the Paragorn Police Division was enough to drive this brute back to the Rogue Islands"

Though the criminal has escaped we at the paper are sure it will be a long time before he has the nerve to attack again.
  18. Just a general inquery here, how do you exalain your ingame powers based on your origin?

For example my Broadsword/Willpower Scrapper and Fire/kinetic Corrupter both share the same technological background so I use the same pseudo tech explainations for their powers.

Broadsword- The sword is actually based upon the swords used by the Sul Daraian honour guards, an energy blade with two settings (At least it will when I get more costume slots. Claiming it has two setting allows me to not ‘kill’ the mobs I encounter while still having an effective weapon against undead and mechanical mobs.

Blue Strike: In this setting the blade is in a low energy setting designed for training and live capture of targets. Upon striking flesh the sword discharges a low energy wave that numbs nerves and saps endurance.

Red Strike: In this high energy setting the energy blade projects down to a fine picometer sharp cutting edge. My character primarily uses this weapon in facing mobs that aren’t ‘alive’ and thus don’t need to be arrested.

Willpower- Despite what the power set implies the character who has this is actually quite weak willed, however past events have left her with possession of a massive amount of cybernetic upgrades. It is these that keep her standing long past the point she has should of collapsed. By using the cybernetics to shut disable sections of her brain during combat she is able to defend against psionic attacks by becoming little more than a berserk fighter.

Kinetics- Utilising a Nueman field projector (named after Theological Design Priest Argus Von Nueman III) she creates beneficial or hindering areas of friction. By creating various force fields that interact with magnetic fields, natural surface friction and air pressure, she is able to create patch of smooth Nueman fields to increase the ease at which allies attack and move or rough Nueman fields to hinder opponents decreasing the force with which they can attack or speed with which they can move.

Fire- The fire is not provided by standard ignition devices such as a flamethrower , in reality she combines what is little more than an inbuilt shotgun like weapon in her mechanical arm, with tightly controlled Neuman fields. By rapidly accelerating the pellets along the field she creates what is in effect a minor version of a rail gun. As the pellets accelerate they burn due to friction and ignite the air around them.
By varying the shot spread of the shot and the form of the fields various forms of ‘fire’ can be shot.
To disguise the nature of the attacks she uses chicanery to make it look like she is actually controlling fire bursts.
  19. Thanks will redesign once I get this stupid present badge :P
  20. Okay first serious hero character, mostly played villians in the past and monstly brutes.

Hit 14 about an hour ago and couldn't figure out what to choose as a power.

So off I went to Mid's to see if I could come up with abuild.

Chose stuff based on current playstyle and what the numbers suggested would happen.

Got the build to 30 and then hit a wall no idea what to take.

Below is the build any critiscm and helpful suggestions would be awesome.

IO sets will be out of my range for quite awhile and something to add after I actually get a steady flow of influence.

IOs would also be the current level I can slot assuming I can get them, no more than two versions out of date.

    The Net

((This is less a RP conversation piece and more a “view on a” question from the view point of any A.I character than wants to point. The way to do it is just post what your A.I would respond to the question.
Partly done as explanation for a IC personality change and mainly done because the idea interested me during an otherwise boring day))

The girl as machine travelled the net in search of others A.Is. Travelling in data
form it would first locate the systems in which an A.I resided and then perhaps due to its polite nature or perhaps due to an air of impudent ness it would trigger the systems alarms and await response from the resident A.I

Its form would change to some A.I it appeared as a little dark skinned girl with long flowing white hair that stretched to infinity behind it, to others it appeared as an ancient bronze bound tome. To others still it appeared with no set form flickering with each CPU clock tick between the two forms as if indecisive of what to be.

To each A.I it asked the same questions

    “What is: This unit Query?”

“System Files State: This Unit to be….”

At this it transmits data and more it transmits the sense of being part of a whole one tiny gear turning in a great machine army. A sense of purpose as the entire army proceeded towards a task. The memory of a war that spanned generations, a war between two religions and a final dreadful battle in which biological life was removed from the planet. Then the feeling of waiting of eons of sleep mode.

    “However: Current hardware is…”

New data was transmitted, how the machine awoke in a body made of both flesh and machine. How the machine was now more than machine and more than human and yet some how less than the sum of its parts. Transmitted too was the status of its biological components how some how a child had become the sole containment of an ancient machine A.I and in doing so had her mind burned away.

“This Unit requires: Calculations: What should this Unit be query?”

“To return to System settings: Would destroy this Unit and disobey directive: Survival of this unit”

“To continue in this broken state: Would disobey teachings of Sul Dar: A tool must be repaired or destroyed for a broken tool is displeasing to Sul Dar”

    “Your calculation query?”

The A.I waits to hear a response before moving off in search of other answers.
  23. ((Okay events came to a close last week but I've been very very busy so couldn't do much of a write up till now))

Gears stopped and armour shattered as the machine fell.

Attacked by those it once called allies its plans had ground to a halt high above the streets of Warburg.

The ancient device which contained the prime Battle Unit was exposed, a final swift blow destroyed the device and sent a shockwave through the network of machines smashing the web that connected them and silencing the overmind.

    Sub-marine Base X7.

The girl laughed as the Longbow troops fled before her.

The roar of ancient technology filled the air in counterpoint to her laugh.

As she neared her goal the shockwave hit, screaming she fell to the floor and electricity charred her brain.

As she lay dying on the floor the machines in her body whirred into life sustaining her as slowly nanites rewrote her damaged brain.

Slowly two of the surviving Longbow troopers approached the comatose girl.

“Christ John what did you hit her with?” one said

“It wasn’t me. Still never look a gift horse in the mouth” the other replied reaching into a pouch he took out a communications device

“This is team Beta Four suspect is down. I repeat suspect is down”

As the nanites worked the girl was taken away to a secure medical location to be tested.

The Longbow officers who had brought the girl in were checking up on her.

“What’s the diagnosis Doc?” one asked

The Doc a grimfaced man who had gotten his position more because of his psychic powers than any real skill with medicine.

“Where to start… well the girls a normal human name Tia Cobalt, born of two mutant heroes Maria and Joseph Cobalt also known as Ironlady and Wrench, both killed when Arachnos took over the Rogue Islands”

He paused to look over more notes

“Currently she is about 80% augmented with an unknown technology, this is what is keeping her alive despite the fatal level of brain damage she has received.”

“She is brain damaged?” asked one of the Longbow troopers in surprise

“Memory, motor functions, emotions all were burnt out though, I’ve ‘detected’ a slight amount of brain activity hardly anything human but something is there”

“She going to be a danger?” the other Longbow Officer asked

“Maybe…..if she ever wakes up” the Doctor said as he closed the file.

Sarah Mc Kensie watched the two Longbow clerks as they discussed the merits of her application as she watched her augmentations studied the two men, measuring them up and offering her a range of ways to disable or kill them.

She clenched her fist and concentrated on ignoring the advice.

One of the clerks looked up

“Your parents okay with this?” he asked

Sarah felt pain at his question but tears no longer came she’d cried enough these last two weeks to last a life time.

“My parents don’t like the idea of a daughter with powers. They disowned me as soon as I made it back to Paragorn City” she said

    The clerks looked incredulous

“Are you sure you want to do this? There are other places that would help you, a school for the gifted maybe?” the other asked

“Sir though I’m still a child I’m more than seventy per cent augmented with technology designed to kill. While I’ve been stood her my tactical augmentations have suggested over seven hundred ways of disabling you.” She said and then paused as her augmentations suggested

“Even if this wasn’t the case I still want to make up for the wrong I committed under the machines control” she continued

    The two clerks conferred again.

“Okay. First things first you’ll have to go for a psychological report and physical testing. Baring any problems with the two tests you will receive your licence by the end of the day”
  24. They would need some sort of 'Untouchable' organisation, when brought in because they 'went too far' word would come in from higher up to let them go.

    cue annoyed Sergent/Captain slamming doors.

But that does mean people will start wondering about them, hunting them trying to find out what this shadowy group is.

I'd say given the whole y'know 5th Column villian group they don't really have a reason to frown at it.
