The League of Righteous Destroyers OOC

I think we need a place to discuss this group and associated plots. For example should we create a fictional nation for the League to attempt to takeover?
Whether this is the best place for such discussion I'm not sure. People seem to be enjoying the IC stuff so to have an OOC discussion in the same forum might be like a magician giving away the secret of his tricks. Metamorphosis!

Well. as its in secret and the world is not supposed to notice we can use the real world and history... with only certain heroes / villains from Paragon City noticing it...

Anyway... Lots of RP will be in-game too... I will set Liz on Log... so it will be easy to transcribe in-game roleplay with her towards the forum if needed.

- The Italian Job: The Godfather Returns #1151
Beginner - Encounter a renewed age for the Mook and the Family when Emile Marcone escapes from the Zig!

heeee... maybe we members should also start reading the open RP threads here carefully and see if we can influence some from the background... as it should be.

I do think we need an OOC area, but I'm afraid putting it here, in the official forum, might be a little like the Wizard of Oz explaining "Ignore that man behind the curtain!"

I do see some great benefit to having an OOC discussion where the mechanics can be seen by those who want to see how it goes together 'behind the scenes', but, it will give away a few of the twists and turns, plots and machinations that will lessen the joy of discovering them more dramatically as the IC plot unfolds.

There are certain gimics, gizmos and strategies that Lord Borealis is working on, or already has, that I really don't want to give away too soon. Sooner or later our plots are going to cause confrontation with heroes, and I don't want them to be seeing a weakness that Borealis is going to exploit and thinking "Oh yeah, but my character would have thought of that, and will have this defence".

Most RPers are pretty good about keeping OOC from IC adjustments, but even so, RPers also 'borrow' ideas and take inspiration from OOC ideas. And if this is to become a community-wide plot or two, then certain things should probably be kept entirely secret just to make it safer for any newer RPers to join in without risking confusing IC with OOC knowledge.

Sorry for interrupting as I'm not part of the LORD but I have a suggestion. Unless it's too confusing, why not have two threads? You could set one up elsewhere where you can scheme and keep things secret while this could then be used for that which we are all allowed to know. For example, planning plots, involving more players, setting up confrontations or just allowing us a view of the "behind the scenes" bit.

This is, of course, only a suggestion.

We need to get together all in game to set up a chat channel between us. This too be able to communicate betweeen the members and such between the Villain groups and their coalitions.

That way we will be able to act as generals of a small army

It would also be cool having screenshots of us all to maybe use in-between the roleplay threads.

For those ingame tonight.. The Court of the blood countess always have a roleplame meeting every (freaky) friday at 19:00 GMT.

Borealis should see the lab setup there... in 1800-1900 tech style. hehehe

Yes, we definately should.

With the world as it stands today, I will NOT be a part of any group-plot that plans to invade or destabalize a REAL country.

I wanted to find a suitable moment, but now it's been mentioned, I feel that plotting to invade North Korea with Nuclear Weapons or using Chemical Bombs in the Middle East is stomach churning and angers me to no end. I will not use those locations for our games, which are in a state of similar turmoil, unless it is for a seriously good reason, and I can't see any that would be valid enough.

So, seeing as this is only a Role-Playing session, a game where we play evil people with the intent to do terrible nasty things, I cannot tolerate that their targets would be real places and by extension, real people. There's a reason the games are set in the Rogue Isle's and Paragon City and that you can't kill innocent civilians, because it's not okay.

On another note doing such a thing would also break the unwritten rules of immersion. In that real-world political issues would have to be factored into the virtual-world timeline of the City of X games, blurring the timeline for people who want to keep the two worlds seperate and destroying any form of escapism.

It takes Chaos to move the world to Action.

I may not be part of this, but i fully support hates on this matter. One reason is its very bad taste, another reason is that it could be seen as godmoding, where anyone with an IC connection to that country will be forced to react.

(But then i'm also against anyone using historical figures or shoehorning their way into the lives of cannon characters for similar reasons, but i still see it all the time.)

I third the notion. As mentioned in the thread on playing villains, there is always 'the bleed' and I tend to suffer this as well after too long. The thought of causing suffering in places which are already in turmoil makes me squirm uncomfortably inside.

I think the use of a fictional location is by far the wisest idea, and one that comic books often employ for many of the same sort of reasons pointed out in earlier posts. If you need some sort of inspiration look to Marvel Comics and some of the fictional countries they have created, ie Latveria, Wakanda, Genosia, Symkaria, Madripoor, etc.

When you are ready it is a case of deciding on a concept for infrastructure and culture, as well as a suitable geographic location You can then tailor the country to the needs of your plot and pretty much have a free hand in what you do to it.

Such as the United States of America wherin lies Paragon City, in the specific, real-life state of Rhode Island?

Sorry, can't see how that's going to work.

If you intend to destroy, or simply disrupt, Paragon City, you have to accept game cannon that Paragon is now the foremost city in the USA, and far more important than NY City or Washington. Anything that you do to Paragon you are doing to the foremost city in the world, and the USA. (Humble folks those US game writers).

[ QUOTE ]
Source: Official Timeline: Rise of the Super-villains

Although these new super villains made their presence felt across the country, Paragon City became the centre of their activities. As the richest, largest city in the nation and home to so many super powered veterans, Paragon proved the perfect breeding ground for evil.

[/ QUOTE ]

Despite my character being the one to mention a list of counties, that is done entirely for effect - the effect on the reader. I needed to use real-world countries and political issues so that the reader would instantly understand the real point of the style of path to global domination he's considering.

I'm all for creating fictional actual locations for the target, but even those will be set in genuine locations of the planet (but the game universe planet, which we know is not our own dimension), or otherwise clearly identifiable to grasp the reader.

Austavia is one such potential country, being very diverse in demographic, and having a long history of political instability as it has been incorporated and lost from one empire after another, from the Prussian Empire to the Soviet Union.

Karnalia is a fictional archipelligo used in another game-world I ran years ago, and is a far-eastern nation of small volcanic islands. It currently calls itself a democracy, but, oddly enough, voting always apprently elects the hereditary leader of the same family. Its closeness to China has lead to recent trade increase, but otherwise the main industry is subsistance fishing (there have been many rows over fishing rights with Japan) and tourism (two of the islands are quite the tropical paradise.

But both of these are fictional places that deliberately draw attention to real-world political issues. I believe that all good fiction contains parables and such, and that such is vital.

But they still aren't real places. none of the described landscape or people in those places are real, Just like Gotham, Metropolis, Edge or Smallville.

you put and imaginary place near a real place so it is easier for people to conjure up in their imaginations, not because you want any of the events that you portray to happen for real, but so that it is not completely disconnected from possible experience.

so yes, have a meaning and idea at the heart of the story, but they are still not real places, conveying at some level that they are not things that actually happened.

Posted

Um... Gotham, Metropolis, Smallville, etc are all in a real country. Not near to, or next to, the USA, but in it, part of it, and thus attacks to those fictional places are still attacks to a real country.

Taking entire fictional countries such as the ones mentioned so far, overthrowing, destroying, or otherwise monkeying with those fictional countries is still going to have an effect on the real-world neighbouring countries.

Thus this will all still collide head-on with Hatesman's stated position that he will not take part in any plot or event that fictionally destabilises a real world country.

I still can't see that position as tenable given game cannon.

So you expect them to predict the geo political effects of an invasion on a fictional country and the neighboring nations? on the world?

behave. we have no idea what effects the last rikti war has had on the world why the hell should they have to generate all of that stuff just to justify a minor game action that will never be cannon anyway? it is neither required by game or by anyone but you it seems.

Posted

Duh! The entire point of the plotting is exactly to use action against one nation or another to start a chain that leads to global domination. That means every country in the world, if you don't happen to have a dictionary nearby.

http://www.savecoh.com/

Posted

As much as that's the idea, we both know that cannot and will not happen. they might keep hold of that fictional nation, but that's about it.

What ever you think of the players i don't believe that you think any of them are delusional enough to think the Dev's would change the game world to suit them.

Plans are one thing, actuality is quite another.

Plans to.

Go and get that dictionary.

i really don't think it's me that needs the dictionary. i understand you saying that they can't plan to invade paragon with out breaking that rule.

My point is that right now they aren't planning to, and they are deliberately sidetracking their characters in to a fiction rather than Paragon to avoid it. or at least so it seems to me.

ok.. first of all we come here to the same prob as the how to rp a villain thread... what does a good Super villain do... and how to proceed in coming to that goal.

Writers of fiction will use real countries...

If we are making up a country or city it will be based on or placed in a real country. it needs to be for the look and feel. Either be an land like haiti, an african country, and asian country, or an islamic country.

The political atmosphere of the fictional place would be the same as the place it was based upon. And the things we would do to gain control.. even if just from behind the throne, would be just as bad.

We accept that, even though not always shown like that, Dr. Doom tortures and excecutes. He used mass destruction weapons to strike fear etc. And its obviously a central european country... largly based upon those country's that where in turmoil during the 60's.

If in RP these actions are not ok... then the whole ability to play a super villain is taken from us. The plot device we come up with is sounding so fitting because its what would work. It is thinking on a grand scale a super villain would do.

What do you think would happen if any of those zillions super villain plans of Red Skull, Dr. Doom etc. would have succeeded. A thing we as super villains expect. We dont plan to be stppped by heroes you know...

The problem with using 'how I'd take over the real world" as a guide for your characters actions in game, is that the game world is not the real world.

Or to put it another way do you really think the problems in the middle east would be like they are in real life, if instead of dealing with bombing each other they suddenly got blitzed by a race of moon men?

Why would you hate the man of a slightly different colour or creed, when you've both had your homes bombed by a race of squid things that don't even have faces?

While your likely to have a whole new heap of problems, nations that outlaw super powers or execute mutants or whatever. But chances are real world political situations that we suffer from wouldn't exist in the world of Paragorn city simply because of the first Rikti war.

Actually in a world where Dr Doom ruled the world would be far better off.

Take Latveria, when Doom came to power (the people were on his side in this) it was a thrid world country with starving people and random racial purgings.

Dr Doom in the space of time brought it to a level of health care and social care that makes a mockery of every 'free' country in the Marvel world. The people don't even need to work as robotic farms and factoryies provide for their every need.

In face the only time the people in latveria suffer is when some random Hero group trys to take Dr doom down.

In comparasion if you take Wakanda the country ruled by 'hero' Black Panther you get an arrogant country that holds it self racial superiour to the rest of the world, holds it self in isolation from the rest of Africa and does nothing as surrounding countryies are racked by plagues and drought. despite Wakanda openly boasting to have the technology to prevent this they do nothing.

Now if Dr Doom could get over his obsession with Reed Richards he could build up his country by simply pointing out to the people in the surrounding nations just how good they'd have it if they became part of Latveria

Bearing in mind that part of Dr Dooms origin story is that his father and mother were persecuted for being gypsies its kinda hard to imagine he'd be going around purging people because of their ethinicity (which is why I despise that hack Hudlin for trying to make out Dr Doom was a racist)

Likewise pretty much the only freedom denied to the people of Latveria is their right to try and kill Dr Doom.
