Quote:The world record for longest arrow shot is 500meters. That's just firing it for distance. And that's using a better bow than the Romans had access to.No... but one of their common strategies was to have shields up with pole arms on one side stick out and then when the other side charged they ran right into the polearms...
The whole march forward till your face to face thing was the western version of Samurai honor. Basically, instead of being "barbaric" they constructed all these rules of war and it got to a point that is more about the show and rules than it was about winning.
Back in Roman times they marched in lines and such but it was only to a point and when the phalanx strategy was likely to fail they adapted.
Roman archers could shoot between 100 and 300 yards... Greeks were said to have an effective range of between 64 and 600 meters... so I think the Romans could get a bit further than 300 yards honestly.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...7175754AAJQ2v4
M16 has an effective firing range of 500-800 meters.
So Romans have half to 1/8 the effective range.
Roman Ballistas had much higher range but was most effective at 500 yards
The fact is that snipers and guns have limited ammo and even if you hit all the targets with your spread fire you're not going to being able to pick off 50,000 men before they reach their effective range which will surely kill you or severely damage your gear/vehicles... and even if you do you're not going to do it 50+ times even if you are perfect shots.
Romans would likely take out a Humvee fairly easily used in that way...
Ballistas, trebuchets, catapults, greek fire, etc, etc, etc... they could easily be used to counter much of current war fare's weapons and again the marines are fighting with gear that is designed for bullets, not rocks, arrows, traps, whatever. And their fighting styles are very much for taking on those opponents too... when you take that into account the Romans have the advantage of supply, experience, defense, and numbers, while the Marines more or less have only modern tech on their side.
Could the Marines win in an extended fight? Possibly. It's a matter of how well they adapt, how quickly they could establish a base, could they get food, could they resupply, would they pick up on the Roman warfare... and can they do it before their numbers are such that they could do it and before marines start giving up or finding an easier way out.
Also it is a matter of what their goals are... if it's just to kill all roman soldiers then they aren't going to win. If it's to destroy the country... that'd be a quick afternoon... if it were to take over the country and maintain control THAT would be where it gets interesting.
Javelin throw was 98.48 meters. That's using a Javelin designed to be thrown far. Roman armies used a Javelin designed for penetration, at the sacrificing of distance, but to be fair they didn't need as much range. Considering the Romans used a throwing dart with an effective range of 30m, and that was farther than their Javelins, I think you're over estimating the range the Romans would have versus a modern military.
M16 effective range is 550 meters, but can go farther though be less accurate.
Do you really think the Roman's shields and armor is going to withstand all those rounds?
Then there's the Sniper Rifles, with longer range, and the sniper taking them out one by one before the Roman's even get in range of the M16s.
And then you're forgetting all those other long range weapons the Marines have at their disposal. Like the 8 FGM-148 Javelin. Use of one of those will put some scare into the Romans, if not scare some serious damage.
Now let's think the Romans get into range of the Marines. Before they're in hand to hand range, the Marines are throwing grenades!
And to think the Humvee couldn't take some ancient weapondry? o.O Those Humvees would be playing hit and run on those Romans in no time.
You're also forgetting the Howitzers they come equipped with! Range of 30KM! Roman's wouldn't even see the Marines from that distance.
Then there's the nice ability of the Marines having the ability to fight at night from range.
The Marines would walk over that Roman army. Humvees, Tanks, Helicopters, long range weaponry. The fight would be over before the Romans even knew they were in one. -
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-renaissance-man.htm
I think this explains it well enough.
I'd have to agree on a part of it, part of being a Renaissance Man/Women is both mental and physical. It's more than just knowledgable in multiple fields of study. It's also about the physical. -
I've stepped out of my norms (spandex superheroes) for a few characters.
Saw a catboy vampire character once, and I thought, I want one of those, but want to add the Fairy Wings and OMG I loved the look of the character, and so my Catgirl Fairy Princess Vampire was born!
Only reason I don't play her anymore is I RPed her as extremely violent and that didn't sit well with some people as being very heroic >_> RPing putting an Outcast through a woodchipper does not make for some happy RPers.
Though OOCly I got quite a few who liked the fact that she stabbed people with straws and drank their blood.
Obviously, outside my norm of Spandex Superhero. Though now that I think about it, I bet she and Deadpool could be BFFs! Hard to say if she didn't conform to the spandex superhero rule, as she wore buckled leather tights...not spandex, but pretty close.
I also have a tendancy to use the same costume pieces, body sliders, and made a new character that stepped away from all that. No body slider was the same as my main, and only three costume items where the same, Top: Tight Sleek (different design however), Bikini Bottoms and Spiked Collar (though in my defense I tend to use the Spiked Collar on all characters as a way to better seperate the neck/body that always seems off when no neck piece is there.
Loved how that character came out in looks. I think my only complaint is the domino mask (please devs make it so the eyebrows don't show through).
My Crab also stepped out of the norm of my usual spandex hero/villain, but she I think was meant to be more akin to some of the Batman style villains of civvie clothes, psycho personality.
That's the second of my six exceptions to the spandex route (if we count buckled leather as not spandexy).
My other is two that used tucked in pants, and the other was a sailor moon-esque outfit, while the fifth is my namesake who originally used baggy pants, but that was more because of how I introed her into the world of City of Heroes, more than anything else (RPer on Virtue here), in useing the same outfit as one of my first two that used tucked in pants.
So, I'm not afraid of going out of my norm, I just prefere not to, as I picked up CoH specifically for my love of Marvel/DC/Image Comics. -
The Marines would have guerilla tactics for one. Didn't the Roman armies kinda line up and moce foward untill the two sides where face to face?
Next, range. Marines have it. Romans won't even come close to that with their Javelins and their arrows aren't going to match it either.
Never mind the Marine Sniper that comes with the group to pick off Romans one by one before they know what's happening.
Never we have the Humvees. 100mph! 100 points for every Roman! That's right! Why even waste the ammo? You can plow right through them! Nevermind the Bulldozers that also have.
Then lets add in modern weaponry! Grenades/rocket launchers! AOE \o/
the Marines would have it. Nevermind the helicopters, that even if it didn't frieghten the Roman's would just make short work of them. Run out of ammo? Bet they could give a few Roman's some haircuts before they knew what was happening.
It's just not a fair fight. It just sounds like the Romans stand a chance, but really they don't. And there's plenty of ways for them to conserve gas/energy to make sure they win it, and it's silly to think they wouldn't if needed. -
Quote:Only thing is, they weren't underwear on the outside. It was ONE PIECE with different colors. It wasn't "Oh let me put on these blue tights, and then slip on this read pair of underwear." it was "Let me put on the tights with two colors"If you only look at graphical elements, maybe. The underwear on the outside has been such an outdated relic of original superhero costume design, it's past time for an update. Anyone remember those Charles Atlas ads they used to run in comics? That's what they did with Superman's design, keeping the trunks and coloring in his legs and chest to cover up too much skin.
Otoh, Captain Marvel always wore pants, if tight, and kept his underwear where they belonged. maybe the history of graphic costume design woulda been different if DC hadn't sued the pants off Fawcett Comics back then. -
I love the show! Have since episode one!
got my my mother into the show and now she's really sad to see it being the last season. -
Quote:I really think Spider-Woman should of been the way to go! I would of read that! I LOVE how they pulled Spider-Woman off in the Ultimate universe.Generally speaking, I'll always hold a little grudge to anyone who rode to fame on someone else's back (G.W. Bush, Frank Sinatra Jr, Charlie Sheen, Tori Spelling), and I dislike it when someone replaces an actor/actress on a sequel (Jodie Foster by Julianne Moore - Clarice Starling). But this is regardless of race/gender/sexual orientation. Marvel could have made Parker Peters the new Spider-man, caucasian high-school student dating Gwen Stacy in Queens, and I still would have hated the decision.
The truth is they didn't retcon Peter Parker into a black/hispanic homossexual with electrical powers (which would have been lame). They simply allowed Peter Parker to die and replaced him with a new Spider-Man, a rebooted comic which will target a different audience. Other comic books have done this in the past, and in fact Erik Larsen just pulled it off in his ongoing Savage Dragon series. Dragon died and was replaced by his son Malcolm (who, incidently, is also black, though Larsen's good taste doesn't let him profit on racial awareness like Marvel is trying to).
The problem we readers now face is who exactly the target audience might be for this new USM comic. The old fanbase? Minorities as a whole? Specific minorities that reflect Miles Morales' character, meaning the hypothetical black/latino/gay/mutant/teenager community who lives in Queens? This all depends on writing and taste, but the old target audience rightfully fears being excluded if USM turns into Marvel's "political correctedness" propaganda machine with a spider-logo on it.
Me, I say Marvel is long due to seriously invest in a new minority-based superhero that appeals to a mainstream audience, but to do that they need creativity, they need to stay away from stereotypes, and mostly they need to be prepared to take a financial hit for 30+ issues and a couple of bad movies for the comic to establish itself.
Or they can just do what they're doing, which is to slap a spider-logo on a stereotype and hope it sells...
P.S. I can't believe Marvel would rather pull Miles Morales out of a hat than give Ultimate Spider-Woman the lead... It's Hillary vs Obama all over again ^_^
Though about the Savage Dragon, I recall that always being part of the plan (not the race part), to have Dragon replaced by his son. Which gives Erik Larsen a bit of an edge over Marvel, since it was never really Marvel's intention (at least in it's main universe), to age/kill off and replace as the story progressed.
Now this MAY be what they had planned for Ultimate Universe, but if so, it's been terribly done imo. And if it was the plan, instead of using established characters, they probably should of just started a whole new universe.
But like you said, Marvel's afraid to put forth the investment (I'd say the same thing about DC) that's required to get a new solo character off the ground. -
Gives me the idea that he wants a military experience without joining the military (after all there's a lot of rules that go along with that).
Though he can probably ignore the War Crimes Tribunal as he's still a US Citizen, I would think.
-
I consider it dependent on the powersets.
I've made some softcapped Range (and softcapped or close to Melee/AOE) toons, and if I can do that, why wouldn't I take a Resistance Shield?
My Dark Miasma did awesome with Range Softcapped, awesome AOE/Melee Defense, and the -tohit...combined with Hover!

YAY! A new Die Hard! I can't wait!

Routh still looks better as Superman!

Quote:I enjoyed the all Scrapper Apex and Tin MageIt was possible with all of the previous "All Scrapper" events we've done before.

Which is basically what happened in said events. 8 Scrappers go in 8 different directions - all is destroyed. It was a thrill doing things like the All Scrapper STF long before Incarnate powers.

Quote:Which goes counter to what they set off to do at the beginning of the series, when she said basically "We're explorers. We'll make our way home while setting out to do what we were planning to do all along."Voyager was only epic phail due to them having the worst captain ever. She always constantly put the lives of her in danger just to take a pit stop to explore when they should have kept going towards home. So many lives were needlessly lost due to her stupidity. Even 7 of 9 commented on this.
That was voyager's mission from the start. To explore the Delta Quadrant. Only before they had a quick way home with the wormhole. -
Indiana Jones can as long as theirs a metal refridgerator nearby!
Now you're thinking "Well then any hero could survive one" at which point I would say "Not true. Only Indy and Batman would likely think of it!"
Kitty Pryde got stuck in the center of the earth, I see no reason she couldn't survive a nuclear blast if she went intangible.
And of course all the Regenerators. I have no doubt Wolverine/Deadpool/Sabertooth/X-23 would survive it. -
Quote:I don't know. My first thought was "They couldn't pick a better color to show it off in?"My take after seeing that female 'barbarian' nonsense:
Gotta be a snarky joke.
It dismisses decades of comic book and fantasy barbarian art in blatant deliberateness. It simply HAS to be a joke or when we all woke up this morning we found ourselves in an alien, bizarro dimension only we haven't figure it out, yet.

1) Scrappers - this is the comic book super hero AT imo. In fact, when I think of what AT closely resembles most superheroes it's this AT (though obviously CoH doesn't fall in line very well with the comic book universes).
2) Corruptors - The blasts are primary, and this is the closest to playing a ranged character while still feeling like at a Scrapper level (this means using IOs of course)
3) Soldier - Petless Crab build? OMG! If it wasn't for the fact that the backpack is part of the fun, I'd rank this higher (ie...concept limiting).
4) Widows - It's like playing an SR Scrapper with more range attacks and stealth!
5) Stalkers - I love the concept of them! They'd be tied for 1st if their damage didn't feel so inferior to Scrappers.
6) Dominators - It's like how a Controller should of been from the start, only I don't usually have a concept that I like for them.
7) Brutes - It's like playing a Scrapper, only I can't alt tab out or go afk whenever I want without feeling like I screwed over my damage!
8) Almost everything else!
14) Masterminds - They just bore me to no end! I love the concepts I've had for some of them, but actually playing them...meh. -
This is what I love.
"I need a DM/INV build"
Post Bass's build
We need that for like every combo! -
I keep hoping for one day!
I don't mind the idea of having to level each different build up on it's own. In fact I think that's how it should be. But it would be handy in so many ways!
Names! Oh look! I can use this one character to get different ATs combo's.
Concept! MA/Regen, Sword/Regen, DP/Time, Staff/Regen...Weapon/Combat Master concept! Just need to switch builds to use the different weapons!
Put a timer between builds. I'd also likely say if in a TF/Trial you can't switch builds.
You'd still have to level and slot up each build individually, but this wouldn't be any different than how FFXI allowed people to have one character who could learn all the classes. -
I really don't see why this build wouldn't work.
Your damage output would be pitiful, but you'd still have WP's survivability, and the ability to run at 0/0 when solo if needed.
No reason this character shouldn't work out for you. -
No. Gloom is that good. However for Scrappers, grab the ST Fire Blast attack for your ELM to help in ST damage and access to more AOE goodness.

Scrappers and Corrs.
Dual Pistols and almost every powerset for Scrappers except Broadsword.
I wanted Dual Pistols since I picked up CoH, so that's just a given. Hopefully Time Manipulation lets me get the concept I want with it ^_^
