Quote:Depends on how you build it. From a general standpoint, MMs are Tanks. Most MMs are good at taking alphas, if not necessarily good at collecting and keeping aggro afterwards. BG mode - keeping your pets in Defensive mode - is a large part of this.
If you've got a tough Brute along with you, MMs can fairly easily switch to blasting or, with certain secondaries, controlling. Be warned: MM secondaries have the worst buff/debuff numbers in the game, which means basically anyone will do that aspect better than you do.
Honestly, the "role" a MM has on a team is to be its own team. As best I can tell, MMs were designed to be the solo AT - even more so than Scrappers. Which can be fairly useful - that means a good MM adds an entire team to a team (my Bots/Traps can solo +2x8 with some difficulty, and +0x8 fairly easily, and her build is only perhaps 100 million infamy).
It's all fun and games till you fight mobs comprised entirely of Executioners. -
Whaaaat?
Ignore that. The Lich doesn't even debuff defense. -

Quote:I'm sorry I may be the wrong dude posting in the wrong thread (not Oceanic) but I couldn't resist pointing out the errors in this post.I agree I am being alienated more and more from this game i loved sooo much the powers are too short coming where are the new powers not recycled powers, maintenance on all servers at once for them to be different areas n time zones is just lame, not to mention i was already upset from nerfs. Its almost clear they make our game garbage as Champions online comes out as if they're trying to help them take off. EB's kills MM's n Pets with 1 hit not a giant monster or hero/arch villain our game is unbalanced the markets are ugly n sometimes never has what u need they don't bother to add io's to the market at a base rate. Where are the new io's. I won't call the devs. lazy just seems odd everything is short coming and slow to take action. Making a new zone is easy for that to be called something special, yeah and we all hang out in Cimeora cause its new. <---Ranting with good reason disgruntled vet wants real reason for maintenances n issue releases. Not here guys AE whoops sorry nerfed it no AE. Pay to play no longer pay to have fun im sad soo much for convincing all my close friends to leave WoW I cant prove CoH/CoV blows them out the water
1. How the heck are you playing your MMs to where EBs slam you and the pets instantly?
2. The AE nerf may have been overboard but at least I won't see new players churning out high level characters in two days with NO idea on how to play them. -
I knew you couldn't resist a reply, heh. But yeah, Gang War can easily be shortened down to a respectable time with proper recharge bonuses and hasten. Really, your little meat shields of doom are up often enough to get you out of a sticky situation unless you're the player who runs into unfortunate accidents every 3-5mins (guilty as charged). -
Does anyone honestly care (or need to care) anymore? I mean we got by just fine for, oh, how many issues was it prior to the AE? Oh yeah, 14 issues. The awful players the powerleveling churned out was just unsightly.
I say we move on
(Bonus rep if you can guess the Left 4 Dead Bill quote I've got in my head about this subject). -
Quote:You forget that in PvP those two bonuses help increase the Mastermind's life span indefinitely. Although I am in full agreement that tankerminding is the only other promising situation where they pay off.Meh, I don't find them too terribly useful. As the AT with the least hitpoints, a % increase doesn't add as much as it would to anyone else. The same is true for regen, since regen's effectiveness is directly proportional to HP.
That said... The effective resist granted by BG mode could be viewed as "increased HP." Taken in that light, +regen and +HP is actually 4 times more effective than it seems (since you only take 1/4 of incoming damage). I think this would only be useful for a tankerminding strategy/build. -
Quote:From my experience, set bonuses are generally not worth going for on a MM. Mostly because you're not the one doing anything damaging. Frankenslot to full effectiveness and get bonuses if things work out. That's my policy.
I will state, however, that I used set bonuses to get enough recovery to replace stamina, allowing me three extra powers I wouldn't normally have. That much was easy to do since all the +recovery bonuses are only two enhancers into the set. I have also used set bonuses to bring me up to the ranged/AoE softcap from what FFG gives. I get hammered by melee still with only 35% defense there, but it's nothing that 75% damage resist can't cure.
+HP or +Regen is never a bad thing to build towards on specific MMs. -
Damage-wise post 32 Dark has an advantage until you get your patron immobilize with traps. Tar Patch works so well with the Assault Bot's fire patches it's just amazing.
Traps will offer more proc-heavy powers such as caltrops, acid mortar, poison trap, and trip mine. Traps will win with damage, but in no way does Traps outpreform Dark in survivability unless it comes down to certain situations in which the constant protection of the Force Field Generator overpowers Dark's ability to ToHit debuff. What I mean to say, is that Dark can be overwhelmed in many circumstances involving recharges and ranged enemies. If there are too many that avoid clustering, or if it becomes too spread out to evenly debuff everything then you've got a problem with Dark.
Both are extremely fun and work wonderfully with Bots. All that you need to do is pick one you find more interesting or promising. -
I meant that in the sense that the pet bonuses do not grant the player advantages that would affect himself, only the pets around him/her.
-
Any and all set bonuses affect the recipient only. In other words: bonuses do not work on pets, only the player.
There are, in fact, pet resistance and defense uniques that work on them alone. -
-
Quote:Well yes, that's the idea. But you can fit the other two into thugs and bruiser without having to totally gimp Gang War.
If you plan to use Gang War at all.
My pain dom side was speaking there. Had no reason to put accuracy in Gang War in my build, especially with all the stuff going towards helping them to hit enemies anyways. -
Quote:10% defense and 20% resistance with both uniques. This is more or less what I was trying to say. Recharge is more important than accuracy, which is more important than damage. Damage helps the taunt in that a high damage target moves up the aggro list faster, but really? You need to connect first. And you want this up as often as possible, so recharge should be the primary focus.
I still maintain that you should try to fit the uniques that won't go in your other pets. That's an extra 5% defense and 10% resist all. Maybe not much, but on top of everything else, it's amazing. -
Quote:But the thread is about discussing how to improve a set that underpreforms compared to the others at our disposal. Much like Trick Arrow it's annoying, but Mercs are still very playable and fun.In the end, Mercs still rock. I can still solo EBs and a few (VERY few) AVs with it. As long as it has it's advantages I am happy with it. Regardless of all the Cons it may have.
On another note: Someone mentioned earlier in the thread about replacing Serum with an "Air Strike" power, to which I replied that it would most likely not happen. I wouldn't actually mind an air strike type power for Mercs.
Serum replacement possibilities: Supply Drop (Fully heals mercs, instantly recharges their powers, restores all endurance, and gives them a 10% damage bonus for 30 seconds), Entrenchment (Sandbags appear around the mercs making them immobile but highly more resistance to damage with a small defense bonus- 5% defense and 20% resistance), or even Reinforcements (Creates a small division of troops much like Gang War, except they'd be like Gunner-class enemies dressed as soldiers, adding in the fact that there would be about three pseudo medics in the mob with a weak medical kit heal).
That's all I've got right now. -
-
Quote:And yet they're in the hospital and you're not.I'm sorry but i don't consider killing someone with something like a thugs/pain a win. It's more a loss, like...."hey, i couldn't kill you fairly with any of my other toons, so i brought the cheapest one i had."
It's the same as using a heavy to kill someone or teleporting them into an AV and saying you won. -
...Uhh...for once I didn't even get on for double exp
-
A well built FF defender can basically soft cap the entire team. It's all up to you, because the Sonic would bring more to the table in certain situations.

I would advise getting hasten for Poison and Dark Miasma.
Poison: More of a PvP oriented set than most, this secondary will have you bringing some of the strongest enemies in the game to their knees pretty quickly. If you know how to handle it intelligently it can be a very fun and engaging set. You'll never be bored with Poison, but I guarantee you will get frustrated at times.
Dark Miasma: Oh, baby! This set does it all with mass amounts of -ToHit, -Damage, -Resistance, Fear, a hold, an "OH SHI-" power, and a good amount of healing. Dark Miasma is the cruise control of the 3 and also the one requiring the least amount of set knowledge to play. Although easier to get the hang it is definitely not the weakest by any means.
1 extra advantage of Dark Miasma: Arsonist Burn Patches+Tar Patch -
Note: The Oni will not always initiate Breath of Fire when he is at range from a mob.
Smoke Flash can be mitigation, extra damage, or even a surprise tool. With the critical rates it gives you can happily place it on a Jounin for varried results (usually good ones). If you slot Smoke Flash for endurance reduction and recharge you can have it perma on a pet of your choice (with hasten up it can easily stack if slotted for 2 or 3 recharge reduction enhancements). -
It's the easy 1-2-3 hasten+SS combo package.

Quote:Or to put it simply; if you want to attack and stay in Bodyguard, only order SOME of your pets to attack and leave the rest in Defensive/Follow. And yes, you can drag icons from your pet window to your power tray to make new command buttons, as well as edit the ones there.
Defensive/Stay and Defensive/Go To are also viable options. -
Bodyguard works in Defensive/Follow, Defensive/Stay, and Defensive/GoTo
Pretty much it.
