  1. I am one of the many who feels that teams looking for 'healers' are somewhat ignorant about game mechanics and, especially after level 12, a pure healer is something that is not as useful as most other type of defenders.

Now, we often hear a lot of anecdotal evidence on these boards about the healers being praised for their selfless act of having one attack, the medicine pool, leadership and Empathy heals to the detriment of their own character's soloability.

So, my proposal is that a few of us embark on the quest to be pure healers for a bit and track the actualy responses we get and how our play sessions go. Let's play to the best of our ability within the basic healing framework.

As far as allowable powers, I'm thinking we can all be Emp/Archery or Emp/Psi and we will take ALL of our heals and resurrect powers. We will get medicine. I'm thinking Clear Mind is fine but I'm still undecided on Fortitude, as I think we run the risk of losing our True Healer status. Leadership and Teleport are fair game.

What say ye? Are you up to the challenge of being a h34l0r?

As for what I want to do with the team, mostly just radio mish's, the odd TF (I have rad's debuffs for that) and no farming.

    Thanks all.
I vote no. With the amount of -to hit you'll be leveraging with RI stacked with the defense from Manuevers, the resist from Sonic will give you a lot better mitigation.

If you're running /Fire Epic pool, you may want to look at farming Demons. They don't crit and since their attacks are Fire based and fire resistances are less common, their base damage numbers will be lower (I believe.).

It sounds like a Critical. I know I get hit by the bosses and if I already have a little damage registered, it'll floor me. Now, this is on /Stone so my S/L Resist is only about 20ish
  4. The drop rates for Pool Cs off of bosses are higher than I expected. Might have to farm with bosses enabled.
  5. 1) Really, for me it just comes down to getting some of the Hero starting zones revamped and a bit more added to villains starting zones.

I'd say make the feel of Galaxy City and Atlas Park very different so you have a reason to start in either. Make the starting missions something that is more likely to drag a player in who is trying out the game. I'd also revamp King's Row and have it be the start of "Reactive Missions"

    Which brings me to...

    2) Reactive Missions. Yeah, I ripped it off from an article but I think it would be really cool if there were broadcasts put out and markers would form on the map for both instanced missions just for you and for zone-wide events, ala Fires. Make them give more rewards and have the enemies be scalable like the invasions but have them more localized. In Perez or Kings, you could have a Dimensional Rift created by the CoT that you have to quell. Just interesting things like that.

3)More IO sets. I want lots more sets. Customizing my toons that way really floats my boat.

    4) Ability to colour APPs/Pool powers.

Even though it is not a trench coat, the "Baron" coat that comes with the Magic pack has a look similar to a trench coat and may be what your friend was wearing.
  7. I think one of the huge problems in terms of people's perception of CoH who don't actively play it is they played it near the beginning and think that it's nearly the same game.

I have a few friends who did and think the game lacks any goals and end-game content because they played pre-i9. A lot of people still remember the game as it was post-ED and pre-Inventions and that doesn't do a whole lot for perception on the game.

The unfortunate part is there is not a lot you can do about it once people get that perception. I mean, a lot of people who went and got CO and didn't like it aren't likely to pick it up again a few years from now to find out that teaming is worthwhile or other aspects of the game have been improved.
  8. I can't believe no one has mentioned how TS' chance to Stun would also stack with Oppressive Gloom for the ability to stun bosses.

That plus how awesome it looks would mean it would be awesome.

It was a quick estimate. Panacea Proc + Gladiator's +3% Def. Togther that'd be anywhere from 2.5 to 4 billion. 5 Purple sets, 5 LotG +7.5%s, Numina/Miracle Uniques, and a few other somewhat expensive sets like Obliteration, BotZ and the non global LotG pieces, and finally some HOs.

    I've been thinking:

Cold/Kin Controller -- This is the big one with "help" on endurance with Transference

    Cold/Electric Dom

    Cold/Fire Dom

Any other suggestions that might work? Which of these would be the best and why?
I'd consider a Cold/Kin/Psi Controller. This would give you access to WoC to stack with Arctic Air. That plus the purple confuse set would equal good times.

Which shows, that different situations, shine for each power.
I disagree. My SS/SD Brute (Which has the lowest SC damage) is able to Foot Stomp + Shield Charge to clear all the minions of the mob and, depending on fury, all the Lieutenants. Then, in the time it takes to mop up the couple bosses and run to the next spawn, by the time my Foot Stomp hits, my Shield Charge is recharged and ready to fire again. It is somewhat less reliable when Hasten is down but still plenty close enough that I get to use it every spawn. Add the fact that it is providing both mitigation in the initial Knockdown and the fact that it is killing over 2/3rds of a spawn and yes, it is a Holy Grail power.

And this is just with Hasten + 5% Recharge from CI and +20% from an empowerment table. I'm terrified to see how often it will be up with my final build that includes perma-hasten.
  12. I've created both a Brute and a Tanker with the same combo of powersets. As the Brute is closing in on 50, I wanted to spend some time getting the Tank out of the 30s and on his way to 50 during this DXP Weekend. Now, considering the amount of toons that I want to IO out and considering the potential amount of inf IO'ing my Brute will cost (build is looking around somewhere in the 10 billion+ range.), I don't really want to spend a lot on the Tank but would love to get some excellent performance.

    Here's what I'm looking for:

-Soft Capped Melee/Ranged Defense. Preferably AoE but I honestly don't mind losing a bit there.
    -Fitness/Fighting/Leaping/Hasten
-Body Mastery for CP and PP
-Decent recharge. I don't mind LotGs in the build since I can consider them long term merit investments.

Now, with all this said, I'll be posting a build when I have more time for critique but was wondering if anyone had a build lying around that meets these requirements. Oh, and I wouldn't mind making sure I had pretty decent DDR.
  13. I just wanted to say that I really like how my SS/SD runs now that I can set missions for 8 and leverage the massive AoE that he brings to the table. It almost feels like self-PLing when I hit Foot Stomp and then Shield Charge right in the middle of a group. Now that I have Ball Lightning... it's gone up to 11.

Not only that but more dead mobs means more Catch a Breaths which means I 'doesn't afraid of anything'. Well, except Arachnos.

It'll be absolutely terrifying to see what he's capable of once I get him slotted up. Right now he's just running Basic IOs, a Steadfast, Gaussian's and two 2-piece BotZ sets.

    Yeah. SS/SD is awesome.

And, in fact, until you've got good recovery bonuses and Stamina slotted well, etc... Brutes are actually extremely lucky this way in that your Fury carries more damage boost than a power being ED-slotted for Damage. And keeping in constant motion is important for Fury.

To answer the original poster's question; I'd go Stone/DA. Fault + Oppressive Gloom is a bit of an "I Win" button for damage mitigation. If you don't care about that as much, Claws pairs really well with it. SS is always a good primary as well.
  15. One reason why having more Resistance in IOs is more dangerous than Defense that I'm not sure people have brought up is one thing. Debuffs.

With defense, sure, you can avoid most of the defensive debuffs, but the threat of cascading defense failure is still very real.

Whereas Resistance resists debuffs on its own, meaning that having an AT that isn't designed for having high resists might have a more detrimental effect on balance than defense currently does.

I don't think it'd make it more overpowered than stacking defense IO bonuses but I still think it'd be a factor.

Sorry if I wasted your time.

[I was hoping I could run most of the toggles at the same time. That would really kick ***.]
To put the toggle thing in perspective, on my /Dark Armour character I'm running 10 toggles at once. That's 6 in Dark Armour, Tough, Weave, Combat Jumping and Focused Accuracy. And I don't have the benefit of Quick Recovery. I do have Physical Perfection but that's nowhere near as good of an endurance recovery power.
  17. I think it would offer a competitive edge if NCSoft allowed access to all of their MMOs, present and future for a premium subscription fee. Something along the lines of 2x the standard monthly fee.

Things with tactics or Aim are also going to cause much more hardship for defense-oriented player builds than most other things. If you wanted to make something that was explicitly designed to reduce the effectiveness of softcapping, that's where I would go (my scrapper challenge mission has pets for precisely that reason).

One comment on defense debuff resistance. I've always believed it shouldn't have been fully slottable as it currently is, but even so one way to reduce DDR to make it more "fair" as mitigation goes is to simply reduce the DDR cap from 0.95 (95%) to 0.9 (90%). The absolute *worst* that a defense debuff can do so something with no defense is to just about double incoming damage (because after that the attacker hits the tohit ceiling and it doesn't matter any more) and that occurs after about -50% debuff (really -45% debuff, and if the attacker has any accuracy than its a bit less than that). If the absolute best DDR that SR could slot for was 90%, then the amount of defense debuffing that would double incoming damage would be -5% (from an effective 45% defense to 40% defense)** and that would be reached after -50% stacked defense debuffs. That's at least within the realm of possibility (speaking about PvE here) and the high strength of that level of debuffing is compensated for somewhat by the still possible effect of cascade debuffing and by the fact that tohit buffs are out there as a completely separate and unresistable effect.

** this is an oversimplification for discussion purposes: it would take a very involved discussion to account for overstacking defense (which would put you above 45% defense - for which there is no damage mitigation benefit but a significant debuff protection benefit) and the effects of debuff avoidance vs cascading at high defense levels. I'm not ignoring those issues so much as I'm setting them aside here for simplicity for the moment.
So, what my limited intelligence is taking from this is in designing a challenge that would be able to challenge all Scrappers more-or-less equally, I'd probably look at trying to balance for a small to-hit buff combined with a small source of defense debuff. Throw in a bit of to-hit and resistance debuff to taste.

Seems like a bit of a daunting challenge.

    End usage will be horrible.

If you want to go WM/DA play WM as you would with any other toon, and just perhaps stack clobber with OG. Skipping Jawbreaker for the first two attacks is a baaaaad idea.
Any idea what Whirling's chance to stun is?

Thanks for the recommendation. I went with Jawbreaker and whatever the harder hitting out of the two is, anyway.

Note that paired with DA it will be an endurance hog. End redux and recovery io set bonuses will help once built, but at lower level be sure to carry lots of blues.
Yeah, I've got a pocket Kin pacted with the toon and I've found that careful slotting and the Theft of Essence proc mitigate the worst of the endurance problems. Would it be worth it to forgo Jawbreaker to pick up two first two attacks?
  21. See, for me, how the toon got it's levels is rather irrelevant to my enjoyment of said toon. I will give a few examples;

Crimson Charlatan: This is my Fire/Kin/Stone Controller. He gained levels 1-50 in the Atlas Park Architect building. He was created once i14 hit live. I grinded those levels out and self-farmed with him all the way to 50. I then specced into a build that soft-capped my defenses to Smashing/Lethal and proceeded to use him to PL my friends' toons. And I love this toon. I love his concept; the Brutish Mage-Warrior from another world, forced to flee when the world he ruled with an iron fist rebelled. He's definitely going villain. I ran the Praetorian arcs with him after hitting 50. I've done many TFs with him. My accelerated 1-50 leveling did nothing to reduce my love for this toon.

Black Bellatrix: My Claws/Dark Scrapper. She was born as part of a duo and leveled through normal missions and got all the way to 42, pre-i14. Where she stalled, until I found out about the Theft of Essence: Chance for +End proc. Then I finished leveling her and now, with the enhanced mission difficulty options, new life had been breathed into her. She was leveled old-fashioned and again, this did not reduce my love for the toon.

IGNIS v0.84b: This was my Fire/Rad controller that was part of a Fire/Rad superteam. He gained the levels quite fast, being part of a Fire/Rad superteam, and once the team fizzled out, he was neglected until I finally needed the character slot. I had no attachment to the toon. There was no story, I hated the costume and I hated the name. AE syndrome. He got deleted, like I said.

Acro Bat: My MA/SR Scrapper. He was my main. I love his costume, I love his story and I had fun playing him. Until I got into the upper 30s. I played him through lots of different arcs and played the 'traditional way' with him. Now, every time I go up against a Tank Swiper or a Rikti Soldier, I cringe as my anemic damage wears down my endurance bar faster than their health bar. He's been pretty much shelved as a result. If he was on my current main account, he might be due for recycling.

So, as you can see, in my case, my toons origins and how they got their levels had nothing to do with my enjoyment of the characters. In fact, I find I get a lot less enjoyment out of playing now that I have a bunch of sub-20 toons that I love the concepts of but have to grind out those boring pre-20 levels. Especially since they're heroes and I have to play terrible content I've played a thousand times before or pretty good content that I've played about a million times.

Yeah, I just did this too, but for my level 16 Scrapper. You get lots of compliments when running as a lowbie with this sword. Too bad you can't unlock Talsorian early
