  1. What I didn't like about GR:

Praetoria 1-20. Just about everything they possibly could've done wrong about this place, they did. Laggy, glitch-prone maps was just the start. Then there's the enemy factions you face - all way overtuned. Mez protection before control ATs even get their best mezzing powers? Damage types you have no defense against till you've nearly leveled out of the zones? Raw numbers that eclipse anything in 1-20 Paragon or Rogue Isles? Honestly, I think someone at NCSoft was TRYING to drive people away. I will never start a character goldside again.

    What I did like:

Pretty much everything else. Faction swaps were long overdue, and while the raid content still needs some work, it's not too bad for a first effort -other than Keyes, which is a shining example of what never to do when designing content. As with pre-GR stuff, the newer content is pretty much all puggable without much worry as to group composition, which other MMOs could learn a thing or two from.
  2. About the only time cutscene bombing is funny is when the whole crew does it.
  3. I have Asperger's Syndrome, an autism-spectrum disorder that carries some of the same symptoms as ADHD - particularly the nervous energy bit. I get excercise when I'm at the computer whether I mean to or not.

Can't really leave the server up "in hopes" that it's stable...
Let's see, by that point they're either so unsavvy they have no idea what a computer is or they know for a fact their system is unstable. Triggering large zone events sounds like a brilliant plan in those circumstances. NOT.
  5. Wait wait wait ... did someone just accuse Dechs Kaison of having no game experience?

Did I fall into an alternate universe or something?
  6. Yeah, I'm sure Rikti popping up all over and slaughtering lowbies is a great way to celebrate. /sarcasm

The servers are borked enough as-is without spamming zone events. Don't pile more blocks on a Jenga tower that's already on the verge of collapse.

    1. They're running the checks they should've run at the end of the regular maintenance.

    The Determinator

Did I read the above statement correctly, that global bonuses from IOs/sets help temp powers?

If so, I may be convinced to roll up a Determinator of my own. (I'm paranoid about missing.)

Icy_J, I play on Virtue pretty much exclusively, and my global handle is my forum name if you want to add me.

Or should he assume it's a glitch and I'll probably have great attendance the rest of the year?
That excuse works for isolated issues. It does not work for a month of nonstop foulups and outages.

It's also a fact that one of CoX's selling points up till recently was its relative reliability. As a result of the past month or so, that selling point is no longer valid. The 800-lb gorilla, with a server load two orders of magnitude greater, has had better overall uptime for the month of August.

That's not bugs, that's a complete non-effort by NCSoft staff.
  11. Personally, I avoid escort missions whenever possible, and will continue to do so until the devs allow me to attach a LITERAL leash to whomever I'm escorting. As in "stay within 15 feet of me or get strangled".
  12. It only took a couple months of being broke most of the time to realize I really really REALLY wanted to be able to sling some IO power around, and to do that, I needed a whole lotta inf. So, like many players, I rolled myself up a fire farmer. Yeah yeah, boo hiss and all that. The end justifies the means.

Initially I thought that this would just be a grind-it-out AE moneymaker for my real toons. Then I realized how freaking hilarious it is to dive into a huge pile of enemies and mow them down. It got even more fun when I started IOing the guy and became able to contribute outside of fire farms. (My Elec/Fire brute is now my first 50 and first Incarnate, in addition to being my farmer.)

Anyhoo, when I was on yet another trip through AE, I found myself fighting for my life against enemies I'd previously had no problems with. I finished the run without dying, barely. I was thoroughly befuddled till I looked at the tray I keep all my toggles on - and discovered only two were running out of the half-dozen I usually have active while farming. DERP.

Thus I learned: always check your toggles at mission start.

Precedence actually favors game developers on this one. The 800-lb gorilla sports several shield attacks, including a thrown-shield move that is a mainstay of its spec. (And yeah, it has earned its share of Captain America jokes.)

Beyond that, saying that the technique of using a shield as a discus-type weapon (or any other fighting move) can be copyrighted is ludicrous. You might as well try and copyright styles of fencing or unarmed martial arts.

So what secondary did you go with?

    The Determinator

This'll be an interesting character to watch in action once he hits 10 and starts tossing temp attacks every which way.

Heck, if he's on Virtue I might actually get to see him.
  17. Two changes would have to happen for me to touch Keyes.

    1. The pulse has to go. Period. That's not "challenge", it's fake difficulty - making the game arbitrarily hard by adding the biggest DoT effect in any MMO on the market. This leads to a lot of RNG deaths when coupled with all the other damage effects flying around throughout the trial, which go directly against any concept of "fun".

    2. The timefreeze and Keyes' other gimmicks need to lock each other out. Again, RNG deaths and no fun to be had. The number of mechanics in the fight is fine, IMO, but randomly screwing people out of badges and whatnot by combining them in unsurvivable chains is anything but.
  18. If I can't read it on the first pass, it usually means the person on the other end couldn't be bothered to use proper English to type it and the message wasn't all that important. So I'm not likely to give it a second pass. Occasionally if there's others around I may ask for a translation from someone who speaks better Intarwebz0rz than me, but don't count on it.

    Heil Grammarhitler!

The devs need to redo their math. Free players have exactly one communication option as things stand, and that's the Help channel. Unless it's moderated to the point of making what little else the free players get look generous, that channel is going to end up being about anything BUT Help.

Yeah, freeloaders should have their options limited (speaking as someone who's been said freeloader in the past). But as I said above, that doesn't excuse cutting them off from mechanics the game is designed and balanced around. Basic chat options and trade are part of minimum functionality for enjoyment of the game.

If my first experience with CoX had denied me interactive options that have been baseline in online gaming since before the first MMO hit the shelves, I wouldn't have stuck around long enough to pay my first month.

This might be an easy adjustment to make, then again it may prove to be such an ingrained idea for the vets that we don't shake it that quickly. Fact is though, come Freedom, blind invites will be the only way to roll for the majority of players. Free players won't be able to communicate with us and vice versa. It ceases to be 'rude' when it's the only option.
This is a problem with the devs botching freebie chat options, not player behavior patterns that evolved that way for a damn good reason. Not allowing free players to use the communication avenues the game was designed around is a good way for Freedom to defeat itself.

So, what else can we think of that will need to change? Am I wrong in thinking long held mindsets will take time to alter? Do they even need to?
See above. The only thing that needs fixing is free players' ability to communicate.
  23. /signed for pure mechanical common sense.
  24. For me, it depends on my mood at the time, and the nature of the story I'm writing. Sometimes I go with the guy who's interested in gaining power above all else, and doesn't much care who he tramples to get there. Sometimes I go for the manipulative type who turns the heroes against each other. Sometimes I run with the zealot who's gone too far. And quite fankly, sometimes I do play the one who does stuff because he's a sadistic monster who likes seeing the world burn.

And no, I don't lose any sleep over any of that. It's just a story. (And GG is delusional.)
