  1. ERMAHGERD, did we just politely and succinctly come to an agreement on the forums?

    *applause* Yay rationality!
  2. Right, we may have a crisis of miscommunication. When it comes to either building for defense through IOs or not, it's a choice. Whether you base it on the powersets, the archetype, or I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO SOFTCAP EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME ALWAYS, it's the player's choice, and it's a choice I'm glad I'm able to make.

Put it this way: I feel there is less need, if any, to base a controller's build around ranged defense (or any defense, for that matter.) If someone feels there is a need, and if building that way negatively impacts the controller's ability to do its job, then that builder should accept that limitation. If it doesn't limit something, then congratulations, you've won the game.
  3. Gobby's right, the math does seem to be off.

    8 months of, let's see:

    Brand new zones.
    5 Brand new archetypes.
    Brand new powersets.
Dozens of brand new mission arcs.
    Brand new strike forces.
Dozens and dozens of brand new badges.
    Brand new power mechanics.
    Brand new enemy types.
    Dozens of brand new maps.

City of Villains was (and still is) the single biggest addition to this game since launch. Doesn't that warrant a larger-than-usual break between Issues and adding content?

As for the OP: Anything new (to me) is always good. Tough to justify? Perhaps. Difficult to add to the conceptual stew for character building? Maybe. However, the entire point of "new stuff" whether it's missions, powersets, iTrials or the entire Incarnate system shows without doubt that Paragon (and NCSoft) is still investing time, money and manpower into this game that I love, and that is ALWAYS a good thing.

As for the remaining Incarnate slots...I honestly don't know what I would *like* to see. I would like to see maybe a little more click power that isn't gamebreaking, more of an expansion of the APP/PPP system or the ability to select a 5th power pool.
  4. Never said you were "doing it wrong."

You seem to say that *not* building a controller for ranged defense is "doing it wrong," because that build can't take on a +4/x8 Arachnos mission with "any kind of decent speed."

Guess what? That difficulty setting, that enemy group choice, are completely optional! You don't get any kind of pat on the back for playing like a blaster or corruptor at +4/x8. Sure, the "XP is better," but is it really? Back to my SS/Inv brute, I go at only +1/x8 because it's *faster.*

It's not that building to a controller's strengths (i.e., control) is "can't reach the same performance level I can." It's not an arbitrary limit, it's a choice. I choose to build a controller who controls and doesn't worry so much about the occasional attack that gets through. Playstyle's a choice. SOFTCAPALLERMEHGERD is *not* "winning the game." It's a choice, completely optional, that makes game challenges easier at a significant time/influence/potential real money cost to the player.

(For reference, my 2 level 50 controllers are Fire/Storm/Fire and Dark/Dark/Soul)
  5. Also, if you have the multiple costume slots, you can change the power animations for each different costume. This adds an even bigger variety of animations, especially for Super Strength, which has a good mix of animations to begin with.
  6. Not everyone *has* to run or does run +4/x8. Hell, my fully kitted-out SS/Inv brute (with 42% DEF to s/l without anyone in Invincibility) only runs +1/x8, because it's challenging enough to be fun without taking FOREVER to kill a mob with only one AoE.

Difficulty sliders are there for a reason. If you want quick farming, turn it down. If you want a challenge, crank it to what you can handle. I love controllers because you *don't* have to build exclusively for defense to survive a challenging encounter. Are you being mezzed? Mez them first! Send your pet(s) in to take the alpha! These strategies are not new.

As for the "+4/x8" Arachnos mission...*shrug* I just wouldn't do it, because I'm not a masochist.
  7. Issue 4-7 didn't have any content updates?

    o.0

City of Villains? Not a content update?

    Tanks vs Brutes

Tank: Hard to kill, hard to kill other things.
Brute: Slightly less hard to kill, WAY BETTER at killing other things.

Also, you might be surprised to know the sky is blue, water is wet and bears do, indeed, crap in the woods.
  9. Can you play a Mastermind as a free player?
  10. I think the IO-VIP thing might be at play here, or, indeed a nerf:

    Patch Notes Today, 06:12 AM:

    City of Heroes:

    Tanks:
    - Reduced effectiveness of jose2390's "Understanding Enemy Attack Types" by 22%, to make up for the increased effectiveness of Willpower abilities against 96% of enemy groups who aren't Carnies.
    - Reduced effectiveness of jose2390's "There Are Other Powers Than Granite Armor" by 17.25%, to keep the power in balance with the other Tanker primary powersets in terms of understanding.

    *Is Mids Bugged?

    Ahhah!

Thanks guys...now I have the "real" numbers and am still normal soft-capped. Huzzah!
  12. Aurora_Girl

    *Is Mids Bugged?

So...apparently it was Hide giving that huge AoE defense bonus. Good to know. So, basically, I should build to softcap without Hide. Got it. Thanks, me!
  13. Aurora_Girl

    *Is Mids Bugged?

So, I'm working on a StJ/Nin Batgirl-type build, and I'm slotting "normally," I think, and when I check "View Totals" I see this:

    Defense

    Melee:55.7
    Ranged: 45.7
    AoE:102.1

    o.0

    That can't be right, right?

  14. It's like Halo: you have to kill the shield (Absorb) before you can start hitting the "actual" hitpoints.

    Dark Control

My vote's for Dark/Dark; damage is great (with procs), survivability is very high, and you get MOAR PETS!
  16. My Dark/Dark's main damage output (pre-pets) comes from the procs I slotted into the AoE immobilize and Fearsome Stare...with multiple targets, the chance for damage will be higher.

Though, the way procs are being changed in the future might impact this, but as for the Will of the Controller ATO set: it can be slotted in any controller power that does any kind of mez (so basically, anything in your primary), and I have the WotC psionic proc in my single-target hold, along with the two other Hold damage procs. It's become a single-target blast of sorts, because I have the recharge high enough where I don't need to slot for hold duration and at least one of the three psionic damage procs hits often enough to do reliable damage.

    Hello Pinnacle

    BLUEDOOD! HOLY CRAP!

What's up! Can't wait to see you in PBadges tonight...was busy half-sleeping through a Manti TF last night to see if you said hey in the channel.
  18. So, what you're sayin' is...no sub-50s who're there just to PL?
  19. I play villains. I have villains. Not nearly as many as I do heroes, but I play villains. I think you've misunderstood me.
  20. *chuckle* Okay, well, let me try and explain:

I'm not crying in a corner, or having a crisis of conscience because I upset people. It's kind of like bumping into someone in a crowd; whether you intended to or not, you apologize because it's the right thing to do.

I, very obviously, couldn't have said this any better myself. It's what I've been trying to say for the past day.

Zwil and his team take note of how many posts are made, and what the general opinion of things are, so I do feel it's important to pop in and express my opinion of things one way or the other.

If you're happy with hockey masks and chainsaws, go nuts! I'm glad you've gotten what you've asked for and wish you all the best in your future Mad Max-ian endeavors.

I, personally, am not. *shrug* Like you've all (so splendiferously) said OVER AND OVER again, can't please everybody all the time.
Did you miss the apology bit? No, I'm not bothered that I upset people, but I realize I upset people, and I apologize for that. As I've said in other threads (and boy, that went over well) I don't really get the "I only play villains" mindset. I may have sounded dismissive, and I didn't phrase things appropriately, but that doesn't take away anything from those people. It's like NASCAR, or professional wrestling, or opera. I don't understand why people like these things, I don't like them personally, but that doesn't mean the people who do like them are inherently wrong or bad, or that I believe that in any way. I apologize for making it sound that way.

Again, reiterating for strength; play how you want. Play what you want. Have fun. Complain about whatever it is you feel you need to complain about. I don't like the Post-Apoc set, or any of its pieces, because it doesn't fall within my personal range of what this game is about. Ignoring comic book superheroes, I feel, is contrary to the basis of this entire game. I just personally need to be better informed and more appropriately express my opinions of things during the times where those opinions can be used to perhaps change things. After something is decided is too late, and I realize that.

Thank you all for pointing out the holes in my logic, my hyperbole, my hypocrisy and my lack of empathy for others' feelings. I will certainly keep that in mind in the future.
  23. My Dark/Dark/Soul basically ignores DEF, even at level 50...between Shadow Fall, Dark Embrace, and you know, being a Controller, I don't really worry about it too much.
