Thanks everyone.. Ive decided not to think about a strict budget anymore and just get what I want.. might take a little longer to piece together but I would much rather get something that will last a few years that I can upgrade as well.

decided to go with the Phantom NZXT full tower.. Ive read a lot of good reviews on it and it looks very cool..

Everything else I will pretty much go with what has been suggested but will look at a 100G SSD.. will I need to get a different motherboard for that or will it even matter ??

Generally speaking.. I dont need it Mobs that are stunned, held, sleep etc etc pose no threat to me. I have one dom wh has S/L defense because he spends a lot of time in melee as an Ice/Thorn. The other doms have o issues at all. The best defense for them is a good offense.

Im going with the I5 Sandy Bridge... thats a no brainer to me and I dont even know half of what you guys know.

Oh one last question. How big of an SSD do I need if I am putting most likely WIndows 7, CoH and SwTor on it ?

The only thing I cant decide on now is the case. I was very sure about that but you know how it is you look around a bit and you see a few things that catch your eye.

The Antec 900 that Hyperstrike recommended seems to be a winner everywhere.

Id like to say thank you to everyone who gave me advice, this is just what I was looking for. Special thanks to Hyperstrike because that spec is pretty much what I was looking for. Im going to grab the hardrive first as many people have told me prices are going up because of the shortages. I can start buying pieces next paycheck.

Ill need some help when its time to get the OS installed ( never done that ). I think I can pretty much figure out how to put most of the pieces together myself since I have already replaced Ram, Hard Drives, and Video Cards and I am a pretty intuitive guy. What sucks is that I tossed out an old worktable a few weeks ago that would have been perfect to work on but I can work on my Computer desk.

I have plenty of small screwdrivers. Any other little tools I might need ??

I am web browsing, playing dvd and videos, family photos, listening to music and the most intense thing I do is play CoH. I would like to play the new Star Wars MMO. I dont play MW3 or FPS on a PC, I have an Xbox260 for that.

I would need everything. Case, motherboard, Ram, CPU, Optical Drives, Sound Card. ANd unfortunately a Hard Drive.

I have a cheap 17" monitor I can use now. I was either planning to buy a new 22-24" monitor. Eventually I have a 32" HDTV that I was hoping I could wall mount and use as a monitor when I get a bigger TV for the bedroom.

9) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

I am planning to build it over the next 2-3 months. I will need to get things little by little.

ill be honest I am not sure. Im not even sure if I need Raid or FireWire. Im not interested in Crossfire or SLI. I would like to have at least 1 USB 3.0.

I want to have at least 6-8 GBs of Ram and I am leaning to 8. I dont want to max out ultra mode but I do want to stop playing on the Lowest settings like I am now. Mid Ultra Mode would be fine for me. I need QUIET my system is really loud. Ive thought about a SSD for the operating system and some other stuff, but I dont know if I really need that.


12) Are there any vendors/brands you'd specifically prefer to use?

I do know that I have looked and Antec Cases and Power Supplies and I think I like those. I want to stick with Intel for CPU. I think an I5 is best for me. I am looking at nVidia for Graphics card as CoH seems to have a lot of issues with ATI. Ive used Crucial Memory but not married to it.

Intel I5 CpU Sandy Bridge.. not sure which one to get
Not sure on Mother Board.. Asus or Intel I guess.
at least 6 but preferably 8 gigs of Ram
500MB hard drive. I dont need 1TB.. Id rather have a smaller faster HD
Need good fans.. 120mm and quiet
Nvidia 550 Ti seems to be the card I can afford that will work well.
Antec Case.. like those best so far.
No Liquid cooling.. dont trust it.. just the thought of liquid around electronics scares the crap outta me.
I would like 2 optical drives.. one regular and one burner.. I dont know if I want Blu ray

( i dont have a lot of Blu Ray Dvd's now and I dont have a HD monitor either ) I might do a Blu ray player and a regular burner.. I dont know.. maybe I dont need two.. undecided..

Need a good but not necessarily great Sound card.. and would like at least one open slot for a wireless card later.. might want a bluetooth keyboard and mouse at some point..

rather than ordering something. I tend to use my PC mostly for surfing the web.. watching DVD ( not always blu-ray ), and my MMORPG games , obviously playing City of Heroes and want to play the new Star Wars MMO.

The most important thing for me besides good performance is that it is quiet. My current PC is very loud ( to the point I sigh when it shuts off ). I dont really care if its AMD or Intel. I am not married to either. I would like a decent video card. if It could run ultra mode great..From what I read on here I should look for Nvidia over ATI.

I know some of the usual places like Tiger Direct and New Egg but any other places I should look for parts.

Im figuring to spend around 1000-1200 and I can build it slowly as I dont have all the money right now.. Ive never put a PC together from scratch but i have replaced Ram. hard Drives, Video cards etc etc.. and I think i am pretty bright.

I have no idea what kind of case to get.

I have no idea how much power supply I should get

I am thinking an Intel 5 or an AMD chip ( my understanding is that some AMD's are cheaper and run quite well for what I am doing ). I dont think I need an i-7.

I need advice on how to keep it quiet and cool.

Any advice from the pros would be appreciated.

Ive never done a plant. I just cant get with the Tree Control thing..

However I have an Earth/Fire and it is a seriously awesome toon especially with Fire Mastery Pool.. Stun em with Stalagmits, Keep em in place with Stone Cages, Smoke em with Rain of Fire !!!!

I play regularly except Scrappers and Stalkers ( although I have a few scrappers )

How I play the character really has to do with the personality of that character. Not all the blasters play the same even if some of the powersets are similar.

When I play tanks I see my role as being several things

1) Taking the Alpha Strike. No mattter what Tank I am playing my role is to get the foes we are facing to bring the heat to me because I am best suited to take it and survive it

2) Keeping the heat on me. After that inital attack as my teammates engage it is imperative that I work to try and keep the foes attention on me as best as possible. That is with a combination of taunts and gauntlet and attacks

3) Positioning the team for battle and response. Sometimes it is necessary to move the foes into an area, around a corner, or bottleneck them so they are easier to defeat and less foes peel off to attack others.

4) Push the pace of the team and achieve the objective at hand. Gauge the teams ability. How did we handle that last mob? Can we push a little faster or do we need a slower more deliberate pace

5) Protect the squishies. When playing a tank I am always surveying the battlefield.. What is the most dangerous, WHO is in the most danger, where is that threat coming from? I always leave the team window open so I can make sure to pull a foe off a squishie if need be

6) Fight or Flight? is this getting a little to sticky in here.. do some guys need to run and back off?

7) Defeat foes. I have more than Taunt and Gauntlet. I have attacks and abilities that help me to assist the team in taking does foes.

8) Last Man Standing.. I am the wall. if you want my team.. you are going to have to get through me... If my team escapes and leaves me to fight alone. so be it.. that is the path I have chosen.. and I will do it every single time.. because my team needs me.. and I need them..

9) Control the battle field. This will vary from tank to tank. Some do it better than others and some do it differently. All will use taunt and gauntlet to position foes. However some will use their unique abilities to control the battlefield

Icebreaker my shield/ice tank will make liberal use of his ice slick to cause foes to slip and fall around him

Sandstone my Dark/Stone tank ( dark is colored to look like sand) will use fault and opressive gloom to stun the heck out of foes repeatedly.

and there are many other options as well..


but thats how I see being a tank and what my role is.

Maybe im the weird one but why is it every solution seems to revolve around tanks doing more damage?

In general I think the Tanker AT is fine. I would start by looking at the tanker sets themselves. The first thing I would do is get rid of all fatal crashes on tanks. They should work more like the WP crash. I would have a moderate end crash to reflect the power wearing off and exhaustion but not to the point where it going to shut off every toggle.

They would also be changed so that they are unaffected by recharge as well.

I would look at those powers like Soul Transfer and Rise of the Phoenix which you can only use after your dead. I think its totally stupid for a tank to have a T9 that ONLY works when the tank is dead. I would keep the rez but also make a power that works when you are alive something like Howlight Twilight. Sure you can use it as a rez power but its also a pretty good debuff as well.

I would think about making Soul Transfer a little like Soul Drain to buff the tank.. and RotP would give a nice offensive boost .. the thought being these tanks dont take the damage.. they dish it out to defeat their foes faster.

I would also consider giving tanks higher base HP to push them further away from Brutes. I would also increase the number of foes that Taunt Auto hits for tanks ONLY..

Im thinking of dropping Neutron Bomb myself on my build and adding those slots into consume so I can pull end and keep fighting. That would also give me a place to slot soe more enhancements that would help with my defense.

I am also currently @ level 42 on my SJ/SR brute. He is doing pretty good and about to get a lot better.

I focused mostly on recharge. He will be at the softcap for melee slightly behind on ranges and AoE but you can tweak that if you wish.

Solved the end issues with Energry Mastery.

I had most of the IO's already from a SS/SR brute I stripped to make this guy ( had to many SS toons ) so I didnt spend that much. I took advantage of the LotG. Obliteration and Numina sales on the market recently to fill in some IO's I needed.
