rad/fire power choices

Howdy folks! I just made a rad/fire blaster because I noticed that there is a lot of AoE potential with this power set combo. I'm liking it so far; having 3 PbAoE's at lvl 10 is dangerous and fun!

I went perusing around the forums, and it looks like building for S/L defense is the most efficient way to go for this build, so that's what I'm aiming for.

I do have some questions about certain powers and their usefulness though:

-Electron Haze
-Neutron Bomb
-Blazing Aura
-Proton Volley

In my current build, I have all of these except Electron Haze. I figured that if I'm in melee, using a cone with knockback in it would be counter-intuitive to the purposes of my build as well as to the intentions of my teammates. However, Electron Haze is a powerful AoE attack, and proper maneuvering can get around it's drawbacks.

I included Neutron Bomb because it can be used effectively at close and far range as an AoE. Never used the power before, but I think it's a good choice.

I'm considering Blazing Aura because the thought of having two damage auras excites me! I know that Blazing Aura's radius is much smaller than Hot Feet's. Is it worth the end drain to take Blazing Aura?

I put Proton Volley in because I think having a snipe on a blaster can be useful, and Proton Volley makes a really cool Star Trek Enterprise blaster cannon sound!

The biggest concerns I have with my build are endurance consumption and accuracy. Some powers are under-slotted for accuracy, but I think the global accuracy bonuses and Kismet should compensate for that.

So, here's my build, let me know what you think:

Yes, I posted this in the "build" thread, but I thought this might be more appropriate for the blaster thread, and that this might get more appropriate attention here.

Below is my build and its one of my favorite blasters of all time and may eventually overshadow my main.

I respec'd out of Electron Haze because I found it's low chance of KB annoying and I rarely used it after opening because it is a short range, narrow cone, with too long an animation time. It meant that after my alpha if I used it again i usually only hit a couple targets with it.

I also respecc'd out of Neutron Bomb and went pure PBAoE. Neutron Bomb had the radius but none of the sets it accepts helps with defense so it got kicked to the curb too.

Blazing Aura is too tiny a radius, does too little damage, and has too large an end cost. Even with the slow I have in Hot Feet the avoid in Hot Feet meant that the mobs would turn, take a step, and be outside the damage radius of Blazing Aura before it ticked. I found that I spent a lot of endurance and got almost no damage out of it.

Proton Volley looks cool, sounds cool, and I never used it after I soft capped to S/L because I just jump in and PBAoE everything to death.

Here's a slight tweak on the above build. Is it a coincidence they're so similar? Far from it, I had a PLd 50 rad/fire lying around that I decided to build one day so I ripped off MK's build from another thread. I made some slight modifications, in no small part because I wanted to make the build before crossing over to vill side so I use Cold Mastery for the Ice Armor.

Nowadays I play this guy a LOT, just a barrel of monkeys type fun. It turns out this is my best farming toon, at least for Council (I'm not much of a farmer at all though). For farming purposes, I can see the value of an aoe immob as I frequently have to chase down a mob or 2. Also great on teams for regular mob crunching and the ST attacks are good enough for AV fights.

Just for show and tell, here's what I have:

Electron Haze and Combustion are the worst of the AoEs, if you were going to skip any, I'd say those two.

That would still leave you with irradiate, neutron bomb, fire sword circle, burn, and a damage aura of either hotfeet (recommended) or blazing aura (not recommended). That's probably enough AoE, but combustion isn't too bad it's just crippled by an awful long animation time.

If you run herostats you'll discover that Combustion puts out quite a bit of your damage total. That's mostly due to the radius.

I find that mobs that are running are frequently finished off by the ticks of damage from combustion.

Soft capping your S/L defense makes the animation time less problematic. I find that Aim + Build up > Irradiate > Burn > Fire Sword Circle > Combustion is the best attack chain.

The mobs close while you Irradiate, are trying to hit you while you are casting Burn, are turning tail and starting to run when you are Fire Sword Circling and are near the edge of Hot Feet running (in slow motion) when you use Combustion. Usually one single target attack is all that is needed to finish off anything that is still upright.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that Combustion takes a set of Multistrikes or Oblits and gives you that all important S/L defense. Neutron Bomb does not.

Yeah cus Neutron Bomb is taking your Targeted AoE purple, the only power you'll have that can take it unless you also take the knockback inducing Haze. Unless you hate purples...

I rarely use purples on a defense based blaster.

The issue is that, almost every team has some sort of defense buffing going on, which really negates the need to do things like NOT USE PURPLES and gimp your recharge just to hit the soft cap yourself, when the team will help you get there anyways. If this is strictly a solo only Blaster then yeah, you may want to make sacrifices, but I prefer a build that takes the maximum possible advantages from all angles, in a gameworld where everyone has maneuvers and vengeance.

That would be what 2nd and 3rd builds are for.

It also depends on if you are PUGing or if you are teamed with a familiar group of SG or Coalition players that know what they are doing.

One other thing to mention since it appears that you haven't played a toon like this on a team. Even though your threat level may be lower than a tank's, you will be right there in melee range with them. Your damage output is FAR greater AND you have the added penalty (in terms of aggro generation) of having a primary that applies a debuff to the mobs. You can easily pull the attention from the tank, and keep it for your self, even on a buff heavy team.

I find the amount of recharge on this build to be quite adequate since I have so many attacks. My AoE chain isn't quite seamless but it doesn't need to be since I usually take the time to throw in a Web Envelope or target a mezzer with Cosmic Burst when I'm fighting over +2s and under +2's one iteration of the AoE chain means that all I have to do after is clean up with single target attacks.

Im thinking of dropping Neutron Bomb myself on my build and adding those slots into consume so I can pull end and keep fighting. That would also give me a place to slot soe more enhancements that would help with my defense.

Wow! Thank you so much for the feedback and information! Milady, I took your advice, and took some things from your build that I liked and applied it to my revised build.

With Irradiate, Fire Sword Circle, and Combustion in my AoE chain, I really don't need Electron Haze or Neutron Bomb. As mentioned above, anything that survives can be picked off with single target attacks. I know Combustion is not the best attack, but it does allow me to slot a set of Obliteration. I'm currently at lvl 28 and I can't wait to get Burn >

Side note: I found that I do not need any sets of Multistrike in my build, but I frankenslotted some in Hot Feet to maximize damage, end reduction, and accuracy. I looked into the hami's on the market, and they are EXPENSIVE, so no. Plus, my way of slotting Hot Feet does more damage, but Milady's hami way does everything else better.

Another change I was inspired to make was to include the Medicine pool. I've never used the Medicine pool before. Wow it's useful! On teams, I can jump in, AoE it up, then run behind a corner and aid self, and jump back in again!

I'm still hanging on to Proton Volley, because I'm having fun with it, and I like it's sound!

Question about Hot Feet: is one IO slow enhancement good to have, or is it a waste of a slot? I think the rest of my slotting on Hot Feet looks pretty good.

So, here's my new build. Let me know what you think!

I was browsing and stumbled upon the fire/fire build post below, and after reading Milady's post there, I was thinking: maybe I should replace Atomic Blast with Web Envelope and move Atomic's Obliterations to Consume. I put 4 slots of Enfeebling Operation into WE. I think this looks better function-wise; I just need to figure out how to justify Web Envelope thematically... maybe it's hot wax...

Once again, thank you so much for all of the above feedback. I guess with Web Envelope I don't need to worry about enhancing the slow in Hot Feet. So I guess that extra slot in Hot Feet can go to Build Up for the Gaussian Build Up proc because I can't think of anything better to do with the extra slot.

Here's my build:

Unslotted Hot Feet has a -move speed of 70%, 1 slow enhancement makes that around 93%. IIrc the -move speed cap vs even cons is 95%. A second slow enhancement will put you at 115%ish which means that it will work at full value against even con lieutenants and bosses, and is effective up to +2 vs minions.

That can make the difference between 1 and 2 extra tics of damage from Hot Feet as well as keeping things in the damage radius of your click powers long enough to get maximum possible values vs all attacking mobs.

I tend to solo fairly easily with this toon at +2/x8 bosses on. If I want a bit more of a challenge I bump it up to +3/x8 or even +4/x8 but I find my maximum earnings to be at the +2/x8 setting.

Web Envelope won't hit the entire spawn on these settings so I still rely on the slow enhancements in Hot Feet.
