Thank you for your positive, uplifting comments. It's people like you who have made CoH the fun place to be that it has been all these years! I wish I'd gotten to know you in the game, but just like you do, I believe that we're going to find a home, and I'll have another chance.
Regarding the troll issue, I think that's clearing up, isn't it? Seems like there were about half a dozen posters (almost all names I'd been unfamiliar with, and I'd read the forums daily) who felt like they suddenly had "open mike night," and thus starteth the troll posts. They got heated replies from others, and thus feedeth the trolls began.
But hey, stuff can catch us all on a bad day, and we end up feeding a troll. It can happen to any of us.
There are oddly a lot of "new" people in the game, too, and some are obviously trolling. We just laughed him/her down on the Help Channel this morning, and a good, not-at-all-mean, time was had by all.
Things change. We adapt. But even so, we remain "us".
And "us" being "us", there's fun stuff afoot this Saturday, Oct. 20, so log in to the server of your choice if you have game access, so join in! It's a charity event, and an invite the media day, AND double XP, too!
Thank you again, Lady Grimrose. You are a true hero indeed! -
I have so much respect for Hit Streak going the extra mile and doing the Coffee Talks. It's got to be tough not having "news" to report (or a staff to report it, for that matter), but there he is, showing up, and showing us he's with us. Just with us.
Right now, that seems just huge.
Thank you for all you do, HS. Thanks for caring enough to show up and hang in there with us. Thank you! -
OMG, I LOVED that!
I don't even like that song much, and I loved it! You did a really wonderful job, am so impressed! -
Quote:Chill, please don't let this get to you.Gutted almost in tears again - I knew it was unlikley to be saved - it is obviuos that some people dont want it to be saved
Their re-announcement is spin-control. A week ago, in the media we were the plucky underdogs, fighting the greedy mega-corporation. Now we're getting feedback from that latest announcement that we're crying, game-addicted children who can't accept reality.
What changed?
NCSoft PR department changed who was making the latest news, that's what.
They have never sold the rights to any game they own, and they own a bunch. Thus, from the track record, they never wanted to sell this one, either. We always knew that. What we CAN do, is make this a PR nightmare for them. We have been successful at that, and we know this, because they were forced to make this latest announcement.
Nothing at all has actually changed, only which side the media is reporting on. Nothing more! -
Quote:" We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property."
BULL ******* ****.
This is what I posted in the Titan forums...
Here are my thoughts on negotiations to sell CoH were exhausted:
Potential Buyer: Can we buy CoH from you?
NCSoft: No
Other Potential Buyer: Hey, I'd like to buy CoH!
NCSoft: No
Still Other Potential Buyer: We would like to bu...
NCSoft: No
NCSoft: Man, this stupid phone keeps ringing. I'm exhausted! -
First off, can we keep this civil, please? Making personal attacks is gaining us nothing. Agree, disagree, whatever, but if you lower yourself to bicker back and forth, you're not only NOT making your point, you're feeding into what NCSoft seems to be trying to do - discourage us, and make us think this is pointless and futile.
Second, think about WHY NCSoft would have made a second announcement about the game closing. Why would they bother, since it's what they've already said?
The point is that WE are making MMO news by our refusal to passively accept the closing of the game, and want alternatives. WE have made enough noise that THEY TOOK NOTICE. And now, it's about damage control.
So, instead of the media reporting about OUR efforts, now they're reporting THEIR message. They made the newest noise.
Now what SHOULD be in the headlines? THEIR message, or OUR message?
To those who are negative and hateful, I'll say what we say on Virtue: take it to --- (the behemoth), 'cause we don't do that here.
To those who are giving up, okay, I get that. Do what you gotta do to keep yourself in a good space, and God bless.
To those who are still fighting the good fight... PLEASE! Ignore the trolls! If you don't feed 'em, they won't stick around! -
Quote:I am a little surprised that NCSoft issued any statement at all. They had seemed pretty content to let the silence speak for them.
I don't expect they'll say anything further on the matter after this, though.
When I read their statement, my first thought (after I could think after the blind fury of being so obviously patronized) was that all the negative publicity they're getting is starting to have a real effect on them.
They didn't HAVE to make this statement. They made their views known loud and clear on Aug. 31st.
If they're still repeating this exact same message, but with warm and fuzzy words, then something's getting to them.
If the above is true (and by their own actions, it's the only thing that makes any sense), then this is NOT the time to sit down and cry about how we've lost. Now is the time to kick up the heat and MAKE MORE NOISE! -
It's typical PR talk for "shut up" because they don't like the noise.
I say fight. Make MORE noise!
And let me add, if you want to give up, then GO. Stop posting negative stuff, just GO, already! -
I think it's ridiculous to think this is a new development. It's a polite way of saying "will you people just shut up?"
When NCSoft said they were shutting down the game, they didn't say it was for sale. They said they were shutting it down.
We said "we don't think so."
Now they're saying "no, really, we are shutting it down."
Uh huh.
I think our response ought to be "No, really, we don't think so." -

Good news!
But I am curious. Why are these events, which typically last a couple of weeks, only going for a weekend apiece? -
Great job! Just fantastic!
-
That was just beautifully done. I can't believe you're new to this, it was just gorgeous! Thank you!

Quote:Let's assume for a moment that through one event or another, CoH is snatched from the abyss at the last moment AND development on the game is able to continue.
Issue 24's title is/was Resurgence!
Let that sink in a bit. The title would galvanize our efforts, and be perhaps the biggest resurgence possible for an MMO. Now with that in mind, wouldn't you want to tell your friends about it? Wouldn't that be an excellent selling point? Ripples. Lots of them.
A success here would speak volumes about our community. And it would all be true, we are that awesome.
Don't give up quite yet.
Tonight, Arbiter Hawk showed up in the middle of the night on Virtue, and took a couple leagues-worth of players to the old D, and let us fight 16 (!) Statesmans. (It was Virtue, because he said it was the only server he had access to, from an old costume contest) His avatar was a big, gold car and someone dubbed him Carbiter Hawk. He said (before and afterward) "just remember we love you guys!"
The night before, also in the wee-small hours, Freitag showed up, saying "I just stopped in to tell you guys we love you!" (and also that he was doing laundry.)
So, these guys have their livelihoods in jeopardy, watch their friends become unemployed, and they're showing up on their own time to cheer US up?
Tell me, how do we give up on this? -
I liked the shark week story! I was laughing so hard about "but I ate Woofers!" my husband had to come over and see what was going on.
I'll forgive spelling and grammar errors for wit and cleverness, every time. -
Quote:I think the quality of writing is SO much better than it was, that I'm boggled anyone would think otherwise. The old, old arcs are all "oh, dear! Bad guys! Go zone 3 times and fight them somewhere far away!" "Go see David Wincott" "Oh, you're done! Wait! More bad guys, go zone differently, fight them!" "Go see the longbow liaison." "Good job! Oh, wait. Still more bad guys. Better hurry and zone 5 times and fight them!" "Good job. Have some enhancements! Meet your new contact!"Lore may not be the sole reason people flock to CoH. But that doesn't mean it's not a reason at all. Good storylines are a hugely important part of video games that people keep saying doesn't matter because it's not actual gameplay. That's false. Especially in an RPG. Story does matter. And like I mentioned above, they have actually lost money because of the quality of their writing.
Now there are, like... plots and stuff.
I think perhaps we are talking at cross-purposes. You may be of the Sam Tow School of Good Writing, which says (if I am paraphrasing properly) if the story doesn't mesh coherently with past stories, then it's bad writing? I don't know, I'm guessing here.
(Tangent below...)
I look at this (and most arguments in the forums) as that there are 2 major ways of thinking about the game, which clash on a regular basis. One way of thinking of the game is what I (very erroneously, and chock full o' flaws) think of as "Math/Science/Tech Majors" and the other is "Liberal Arts Majors". The Math/Science/Techie guys want immutable facts, upon which to base everything else that follows. Two plus two needs to equal four, and when you start changing this, our rockets don't work, plus our computers blow up, and well, this is very, very bad for space-time continuum reasons I don't get because I am a Liberal Arts Major. So, this way of thinking wants Lore to be written in stone, and reserved as Canon. Period (This guy is ALSO thinking "if it's chock full o' flaws, why are you posting it - SHUT UP!).
Liberal Arts people view "lore" as a verbal tradition passed down from generation to generation, and has some fact, but also a lot of nebulous other not-so-factual stuff, which is why it's "lore" and not "history." "Canon" is reserved for the Bible, which is also a place the tech-minded can argue about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, and leave the rest of us in peace. Liberal Arts sorts tend to view "lore" in game terms as a good place to start, and if the new stuff isn't quite fitting with the older stuff, just go back and fix the older stuff if there is time, *shrug* who cares? And if anyone brings up Canon, they sputter about "CANON?! But..but... it's a made up GAME!" and eventually, after much arguing, go beat their heads against a wall because who on earth thinks it matters, and what happened to the whole pin argument that was supposed to keep these people occupied? (But some of these people might see what I'm trying to get at, even if it's inept, and despite being poorly worded, might have something interesting to at least think about.... Maybe. We're liberal arts people, after all, and aren't into absolutes.)
Obviously, my particular categorization doesn't even work in this one single thread, since Sam is a writer, which is as liberal arts as it's possible to be (But doggone it, I will maintain until the end that he is a TECHNICALLY MINDED writer!). It seems apparent that, at this point, the writers/devs are at more of a "Liberal Arts" state of mind (um, despite the fact that they're mostly, um, Techies) when writing the game.
It might be (I don't know) more efficient to ask the devs to please pay attention to story continuity, because it's an important part of the game for many players. That's a completely reasonable request. And if enough people are saying this same thing, then it's likely that it would be taken more seriously as something that is important to a significant portion of the player base.
Getting hot under the collar and complaining about "bad writing" (when it's clearly much improved), "but...but... THE CANON, man, the CANON!" is probably less effective, and might actually muddy the message. Not because the message is wrong, but because they may not be hearing what it is you're actually trying to say.
Anyway, the purists are gonna clash with the generalists, just like the min/maxers will clash with the conceptualists, unless, or until, we realize there are some different, very basic schools of thought going on behind the opinions being stated. At least, this is my operating theory, until a better one presents itself.
(End tangent)
(EDIT: This was written before Xzero45 clarified his statements, so apologies for not understanding what he designated "bad writing." In any case, the tangential comments were not to him in particular, in case that was not clear.) -
Another one for Mortie! Well... unless the whole team is at the minimum level and then it's really painful at the end. But otherwise, it's great! All kinds of really funny throw-away lines, that's the best part. I think I got killed from laughing too hard when Mercedes Sheldon got mad during a fight because I made her break a nail. The thing is full of stuff like that, especially the robots in the end mission.
Second favorite is ITF, again like everyone. It's a challenge, but not a grind. The pacing of it is wonderful! It only drags a bit on Lag Hill, which I find terribly apt.
Posi 1 and 2 would be tied with Penny Yin for 3rd. I don't mind exemping down for these a bit, and I don't like exemping much.
The old Katie Hannon would have probably been at the top of my list, until they redid the second mission and made it long, dreary and depressing. Still sad about this, but oh well. Good new stuff, eh? -
I don't think I like this "nerf the devs" idea.
How will we blame them for everything that happens that we don't like and can't have? Yelling "This is a tickle in the face to all your paying customers!" just doesn't have the same panache.
How can we inspire the same fear in noobs if devs only have a ban noodle?
We'll have to watch the coffee talk with Zwill wearing a tiny little beanie!
Plus....
Quote:...you've just informed us that they're no longer the South, and that we have apparently just invaded Russia. And I don't think Elba even HAS a hockey team! We've seen all these new Mods and Red Names coming out of the sky lately- I mean seriously, does ANYONE know who the Fire Truck guy is?
Ahem...
The point being, now that we know that when one Dev leaves, another Dev enters, and they have no shortage of new Dev's and otherwise red names....
We know that when old ones leave (Avatea, Beastyle, RIP) new ones just keep coming!
As far as we know, they'll never stop! -
I think you do yourself a disservice, Organica! I especially enjoyed getting a visual of Talos Hill being overrun with hippies, imagining how the next Rikti invasion was going to look with daisies being stuck in the barrel of their weapons and the Heavies plastered with bumperstickers reading "make love not war."

Just as a minor point, Slovakia is not in Eastern Europe, it's in Central Europe. Austria is it's western border, as a point of reference.

Quote:That Pocket D hair looks hilarious on the Skulls.
I'M A NIHILISTIC DRUG DEALER WORKING THE ROW PEDDLING THE FAMILY'S JUNK, BUT I MAKE SURE TO TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE SURE MY HAIR LOOKS SMEXY AROUND ALL THESE NEW LADYSKULL MEMBERS
Yeah, I like the Club hair on these guys, too. With the mask, it fits their heads properly, unlike how it looks on a PC (like it's a wig affixed on a large afro, or something). In fact, with her mask, the female Skull with the shoulder length hair kind of looks like the top of her hair is too flat, as if she hadn't washed her hair in far too long (I don't mean that as a nit-pick, but as a means of comparison).
Then again, I loved the Doofus hair. Just playing females, I didn't know it was a hairstyle available to PC's - I saw it on the Skull guy and laughed and thought, "OMG, he has HITLER HAIR!" Brought to mind all sorts of 30's movies with Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff, which may be fitting if we're going for a gang associated with old horror movie genres. Granted, no Slavic youth has probably worn hair like that since the outbreak of WWII, I still enjoyed seeing that hair a lot.
I like the new looks, but I would agree with the other posters that having all the gang members speaking with an accent too much. I'd suggest going Sopranos-style - have the old guys speaking with an accent, and have the younger gang members tossing in the occasional foreign words, and maybe even having the writers make up some slang specific to the gang. Ba da boom, it could work! -
I wish there were a "fade/no-fade" option for CD. I really dislike the transparency for a number of reasons that have already been mentioned, and also because it's unnerving when I can't (visually) find my own self in a crowd. Why is it that the costumes I'm most pleased with are on my illusionist, /devices, and night widow?
Even more than this, though, what my OCD side has wanted for awhile now is for all the stealth and invisible powers to be consistent.
Superior Invisibility in illusion set is a visually transparent power, but this makes sense to me, since if I'm using SI, I can bump into foes and STILL not be seen. Though I still dislike the transparency, it makes sense.
Cloaking Device, however, has the about the same graphics, yet unless I'm using super speed, I'm pretty easily seen, just like using Stealth from the pool powers. But the visual effects of Stealth make the user only semi-transparent. This does not make sense to me. I "should" be semi-transparent, when I'm only semi-invisible.
In my own perfect world, we would have the "fade/no-fade" option available for all the stealth powers. Additionally, the varying levels of stealth (which we could opt out of) would be inherently consistent: 1) totally transparent would visually indicate a level of stealth which allows you to bump into the enemy and still remain undetected, and 2) semi-transparency for any powers which grant a lesser degree of stealth ability.
(edit: am recovering from a nasty bug - please forgive if I've used some wrong terms for stealth or invisible here, am mentally a little fuzzy around the edges) -
I have a tank with hover, and really love it. Gives you a great perspective on the room - what aggro you have, and more importantly, what you don't have. Also, you're above all the fx of everyone's powers, which helps visibility enormously.
On scrappers, it's a lot easier to position yourself, especially if you have a lot of cones. It's not good for everything, but on some melee sets, it can be really good. Also, there are a few powersets that can't use hover (and still use key powers) - SS is one of them. -
I think it's a great idea, Quinch. Sure, a few teams might possibly fizzle out because of low numbers or something, but if everyone who wants a DFB used the Q, it wouldn't happen. At least not on the high population servers.
The queue worked really well for the summer event. I ran a lot of those, and very, very few of those lost the 4th, or were otherwise unplayable. And any other disadvantages of the queue for the summer event are not applicable to DFB.
Would dearly love to see a lot less DFB spam in the LFG channel. I don't know why team leaders feel that they need to spam every 20 seconds or whenever they get another teammate, which ever comes first. It gets really difficult to see anything else that's going on, since only DFB and DIB feel the compulsion to spam like that. I always feel badly for those occasional 23 stalkers and etc. posting that they're LFG - their messages are just drowned out completely.
