  2. If you need more help on this I suggest posting in the Gameplay / Technical Issues & Bug section of the Boards. (Listed under "Development")

Technologically savvy players check that section for those needing help with computer issues, including things like running CoH on Linux.

  4. It checks when the power is first triggered, and then rechecks once every 10 seconds for longer lasting powers. (Assuming that the effect that the proc is associated with is reapplied to the target.)
  5. I just got the mission where you have to fight the Madame of Mystery in the Madelaine Casey arc.

    What a PITA.

First, the map was causing unbelievable lag. This was one of the new warehouse maps, the one with the large room with shelves in the middle of the room. Whenever I faced the direction of that room my system would stutter. This was even when I was 500 yards away from that room with a large number of walls between me and that room. There is something about that room that is causing a problem with my computer.

Then there was the fight against the Madame of Mystery. I kept getting killed, and killed quickly. After a couple of deaths I decided to keep track of the combat rolls and things were definately weird.

I was fighting her with a Dark/Dark defender that has 30% ranged defense due to IO bonuses and defense powers. This is coupled with Dark's to hit debuffs. The Hit Rolls for the Madame of Mysteries were incredibly strange. At one point she would have an 8% chance to hit me (expected) then 10 seconds later with me running the same toggles, unmezzed, and my Dark Servent standing right next to her, she would suddenly have a 95% chance to hit.

Facing an Elite Boss with a 95% chance to hit you tends to make for short fights.

Then there was the behavior of the Psychic Cleaver that you are given to use against her.

I would activate it, and never saw any damage numbers appear. It was like she was completely ignoring the Cleaver. This certainly would explain why I was never able to budge her health during those few fights were I was able to last more than a few seconds. That and an attack power that normally does 60 points damage only doing 22. 60% damage resistance?

Then there was getting hit by Telekenetic Thrust and Will Domination. According to the listing on Paragon Wiki, she doesn't even have those powers.

An Elite Boss with a 95% chance to hit you, with high resistance to your attacks, on a map that turns play into a slideshow. Coupled with the EB being given more attacks.

The developers apparently decided to update this mission and have succeeded in screwing it up completely.
  6. Personally, Psychic/Mental has been the only Blaster combination that I have been able to play beyond the mid-teens. My Blaster is currently mid-30's level wise so I can't comment on the last powers in the secondary from personal experience.

Given your description of your personal play preference, I'd say Psy/Mental would be a viable choice. "Blapper" would be the last word I would use to describe how the combination plays.

In the secondary, one melee attack (Mind Probe) is skippable and the other (Telekenetic Thrust) actually helps keep opponents at range. Subdual, an Immobilize, also helps keep opponents at range.

Psychic Scream is a cone attack with decent range and can be used while hovering over a spawn of opponents.

I personally found Drain Psyche to be skippable when soloing. It does have potential to offset the -recovery portion of the tier 9 primary attacks. (Dual Pistol tier-9 lacks the negative recovery). Slotted for endurance recovery, you need to hit eight or more opponents to offset the -recovery of a tier-9 attack. It can hit ten.

It also debuffs your opponent, which is nice in those EB/AV fights.

I haven't gotten to Psychic Shockwave, but it looks like fun especially if slotted for stun. With enough stun and recharge slotting, you could potentially keep all minions in a group stunned.

Looking at the powers in the other two primary sets mentioned, I'd say that Mental Manipulation would work just as well with any of the three mentioned. The main difference would be Dual Pistol's lack of a tier-9 with a negative recovery component. This would make Drain Psyche a little more skippable.

I don't know if I would use the term "reliably" to describe the ability of support toons to mez opponenents. Especially when soloing at higher levels or if running on a difficulty level above the default level. Then there are those opponents with mez protection. This includes some select enemy groups, as well as normal Bosses/Elite Bosses.

Kind of hard to protect yourself from incoming mez attacks if your opponent has mez protection.

Want to know how bad it is in regards to lack of mez protection/opponents with mez protection? Try reading the Dominator board and look up "PToD" or the Kheldian boards. The biggest Dominator gripe tends to be the opponents with mez protection (especially Elite Bosses). And the lack of Human form mez protection irks many Kheldian players. They suffer from "SIDs" (Stuck In Dwarf Syndrome) as a result of the overwhwelming amount of mez attacks level 35+.

    Quote:
But what you're asking for is to not only be able to reliably mez your opponents, but to be protected from any mez that might slip through. That is still like saying that because melee ATs can attack in melee range, their opponents should not be able to attack them back in melee range.

And as for the second part of this quote, your analogy is flawed. The complaint stems from being mezzed when you can't mez an opponent.

It would be like a melee toon fighting an opponent with ranged attacks that they could never close to melee range on, or fighting one that could bypass their defense/resistance powers. Try reading the Test Server board. The new Winter mission has all the Scrappers/Tanks ******** about the Winter Lady and her melee range -resist -defense debuff that stacks.
  8. If you want to solo Lady Winter with a melee toon, you really need to pay attention to the mission dialogue.

You're told you can get help from the Tuatha. You can use them against her. Just lure her to the beach with the Tautha and trigger the patrols just before she gets there. They'll start fighting her if they run into her.

    Makes it so much easier.

That shows you how long it's been since I played around with the AE system. I got fed up with it do to all the stupid farm missions and gave up on it before that little feature change.

BTW, those people who keep saying that the actions of those exploiting the bugs don't harm other people need to keep my reaction in mind. My giving up of the AE because of the farm mission spamming (usually an exploit of a bug) hurts those people using the AE as intended.

You get rewarded when someone runs and rates your mission. Driving the players out that don't want to run these farm missions means that players that develop non-farm missions won't have their stories ran as often and cuts into the reward they get for their efforts.

That means that players that use the AE system to create missions are being negatively effected by the actions of those that are exploiting AE bugs. Keep that in mind the next time someone tells you that the actions of those players exploting AE bugs doesn't negatively impact anybody else.

Not a good idea for me to go into any more detail on the boards. Don't want to give anybody ideas.

I'll just say that the farm I encountered involved a mission set to level 1-25 that included creatures that are only availble in the AE interface from level 30-54.

Got the stuff? Ok, resume reading.
Yes, I've done some PL'ing in AE. I've had a few characters who've just been sitting around not getting much playtime, who've gotten stuck at various levels. So I've logged in with them and joined a few farm teams of various sorts, to gain a few levels, enough that they didn't feel gimped, or to get them over a hump. Getting SO's is a big help- before that, characters tend to feel pretty weak. That and a decent selection of powers to play with, so I'm not as dependant on my vet attacks.

I've got a level 37 MA/Regen scrapper I'm having fun running right now- he gained some of his levels in AE, but has also gained a decent amount from normal gameplay, I'm working on getting him the TF commander accolade. FWIW, I've played MA/Regen before on Protector server. But Protector is dead at the times I'm online, and I thought it easier to reroll the character- whole new name, character concept, costume, the works.

That said, I do have some caveats about PL'ing- I believe that if you're new to the game, you should abstain from powerlevelling. Learn how to get around, how to use your AT and powers, the game story, and so on.
That alone would cut out a lot of the 50s asking where the tailor is, or how to get to King's Row.

Also, I've only PL'ed AT's that I know my way around- scrappers being my favorite. However, were I to make a character whose AT I am not so familiar with like a defender, I would be much more hesitant to PL- I would want to take my time and get good with the AT, getting practice you just don't in an AE mission.

I really don't see the point of PL'ing all the way from 1-50, doing the same mission over and over. It seems boring and pointless, and even with Incarnates, this isn't the kind of game where life begins at the level cap.

There's PL and then there's cheating (aka exploiting a bug for rewards far beyond what you could normally attain). We're talking about an AE mission that could get you 7 levels in one run.

I encountered one while getting tickets for uncommon salvage. (I was not paying 500,000). My Warshade got two bubbles of experience in less than 10 minutes against opponents he could one-shot.

(BTW, it was one run and out. Followed by a report. I know an exploit whan I see it.)

That would be certain destructible items like Snake Eggs and the Vampire Cabinets. These things were reported in Open Beta before the system went live.

The system went live with some of these still available and took several weeks before being fixed. That should give you an idea of how long it takes to fix these sort of bugs. The current exploit being available for several weeks is fairly typical. It just takes that long to address the situation.

I don't assign blame in these situations- the devs are dealing with an almost comically complex system and can't be realistically expected to catch every little thing, and players being players are going to seek out efficient rewards paths.

But if you must blame, it's silly to ignore the people who created and released the content.

Hate to be the one telling you this (on second thought, no I don't), but the latest round of exploitive AE farm missions does indeed involve a "hack". At least the one I reported does.

Won't go into any more detail as that could constitute posting exploits on the boards.

    Updater Error...

Had the same problem on a shared computer. (It was also an older computer runing XP, that may be the source of the problem).

    Here's something else to try.

    1) Copy your the cohupdater.exe and pigg folder and save in another folder
    2) uninstall coh using the uninstall.exe.
    3) copy the cohupdater.exe and pigg folder back into your city of heroes file
    4) run cohupdater from inside the city of heroes file.

For some reason, you seem to need to install COH from inside the file on some XP systems.

Also, you might trying looking in the cohupdater.exe.exp.log file. (It's just a text file so you can open with notepad.) It should have an error message detailing what is causing the updater to crash.
  15. I have gotten a few strange error messages while trying to access the Test Server.

The first was on the shared desktop computer. This one has had the same problem other players have encountered where the updater crashes when attempting to verify the image. I managed to get fix the problem in regards to the Live Servers by uninstalling COH, then putting the files I had backed-up back into the City of Heroes file and running the updater from that file.

I attempted to do the same with the test server and got the message "unble to open c:\program files\CohTest/cohupdater.exe."

I just tried logging into the test server with my laptop (Vista) and got "unable to open d:\programs\CohTest/tempfile".

Notice anything wrong with those messages?

Try the fact that they combine back-slashes with forward-slashes. One is used when denoting files in windows, the other is used in Unix/Linux. You can't combine the two and expect it to work.
  16. My Guess (and this is only a guess) is that there will be versions of the four villain patrons in the new area. Villains that no longer have access to the four villain patrons will be able to get the patron pool missions from them instead. (They would be considered "hero" contacts).
  17. Something was changed by the developers in a patch that occured after the story was published, and the change invalidated the story in some way.

For example, the author used a map that has since been pulled because it needs to be fixed.
  18. Wait until the leader accepts the mission. Then hit the "Mission" tab in your navigation compass. Look for the "More" button in the window that pops up when you hit the "Mission" tab.

Clicking this button will enable you to read the contact dialogue.
  19. I was fooling around a little tonight and encountered the same thing.

Map says it allows 32 bosses, ambushed patrols.

1 Boss with 31 patrols works. 1 Boss with no patrols and an ambush works.

    1 Boss with 20 patrols and 1 ambush doesn't.

Something apparently has occured to make patrols and ambushes mutually exclusive.

  23. There is a difference between an honest rating that differs from the majority opinion and griefing. Personally, I have 2-Starred a Dev's Chioce Mission.

The problem is in determining whether it's griefing or an honest vote. The only real way to determine if someone is deliberately griefing HOF missions is to check their voting history on those arcs, and there have been far too few HOF arcs at this point for any real pattern to develop.
  24. Try This Forum

It has a great many ways to advertise your mission, including a thread where people agree to play each other's missions.

One problem with this analogy, the farming missions are designed to be played over and over again, non-stop. Sort of like a toddler watching Barney Videos.
