So how would I make CoH playable on ubuntu 10.10?

Isn't cedega moving to a free model now? Yeah, here is the link. Just read about it this week. I haven't tried COH on it, but with this change I may give it a go this week and see how it runs.
I know most will say cedega, but another monthly charge isn't the fix I had in mind. Is there anyone who can tell me what I need to get wine running the game?
The launcher is fine other than the white background, and I get to the loading bar before the login screen, but then the process goes to sleep permanently. What ancient ritual do I need to perform to awaken the sleeping CityOfHeroes.ex. Also, it isn't very encouraging to find it's been months since anyone has said much about linux and CoH. |
I * believe* ubuntu has a software installer. Use it to run WINE. Works fine on Mint (which is just Ubuntu with a few different packages, IIRC.)
What specifically I did... couldn't say. I'm not actually in there *much,* but when I am, COH updates and runs without a hitch. Seem to recall it being a lot easier this time around. I believe je_saist is the usual "ask me about Linux" guy.

If you don't want Cedega, WINE works just fine. You need to run CoH from the command line as "wine cityofheroes.exe -project coh -renderthread 0" because multithreaded rendering doesn't currently work under Linux.

That said, the quality of performance you get depends on your video card. If you've got an ATI card, just about everything will work fine (if a bit slow). If you've got an Nvidia card, you probably won't be able to use Ultra Mode (this may have changed, though, as I haven't tested in a while). If you've got Intel integrated graphics, good luck -- you'll need it.
If you need more help on this I suggest posting in the Gameplay / Technical Issues & Bug section of the Boards. (Listed under "Development")
Technologically savvy players check that section for those needing help with computer issues, including things like running CoH on Linux.
