Updater Error...

Hey, earlier today I tried patching today's update when out of the blue, I got a prompt telling me there has been an error. It's weird because the updater was able to patch one thing, then another started to go through and it stopped half way. After a few minutes the prompt comes up and tells me this:

Anyone know what's the problem? I hope I don't have to uninstall the game, my cd drive is acting a fool and is selective as to what it wants to run.

Posted

It's going on day three of not playing. This is frustrating.

Is there a way I can download the game without using the CD? An NCsoft safe link that would allow me to download the game?

Well that is the most recent updater.

If you think the updater program is corrupted, you can download the NA installer from here. The client can only be updated via the updater.

You may want to post a CoHHelper and HiJackThis report so we here have an idea what hardware you have and what other software you have running in the background. Just follow the instructions in Hyperstrike's sticky thread about help.

I've had the same issue. However, I'm at work and don't have access to my current HiJack and CoHhelper stats. At the risk of sounding stupid, can I just be lazy and try running the CoH_NA_setup.exe file and run with them bulls without having to uninstall the whole thing first in an attempt to repair the updater?

No one wants to take a swing at this? So am I SoL and need to uninstall and reinstall the game?

Posted

Your video card drivers are very out-of-date. You might try updating them. I don't know if this will alleviate your updater problems.

Posted

I know my video card is out of date. XD

But it runs CoX just fine.

Not quite getting the connection between your problem and video drivers, either, although Tex may know better than me...<shrug>

The updater is failing at the start of "Verifying Image"? That looks to my not-quite-expert eye as if you have one or more corrupted game files or a corrupted updater. You mentioned that your CD rom drive is acting up ... is it possible you might have some corrupted memory or perhaps your hard drive might be also experiencing some issues? Does your system have any diagnostic programs that allow you to test your ram or hard drive?

If everything checks out, then imnsho, somehow your game files have gotten corrupted and you will probably need to download and reinstall.

I'm starting to think it's because I ran my defrag the day before this all started. >.<
I've heard people having horror stories after running defrag. Like one person even lost their ability to use their speakers because the defrag up and lost them.

And to answer your question, my CD Rom drive has been acting up for years and I'm thinking it might be the lens itself. I've gone to HP and updated everything they provided through download, but since my computer is quite a bit out of date, I think the last one they had was in 2005.

Ok. And I was still playing the game like a champ before all this crap started to happen. :P

So, should I just bite it and uninstall the game and try to reinstall?

Posted

You were playing the game like a champ before on only 504 megs of memory? That does not sound even remotely possible. If that's the amount of memory you had before then my hat is off to you. Both for getting the game to run and for the patience it would take to deal with the long load times and minimal graphics.

If you did have more memory than that then there is your problem. You've got a bad stick of ram.

Had the same problem on a shared computer. (It was also an older computer runing XP, that may be the source of the problem).

Here's something else to try.

1) Copy your the cohupdater.exe and pigg folder and save in another folder
2) uninstall coh using the uninstall.exe.
3) copy the cohupdater.exe and pigg folder back into your city of heroes file
4) run cohupdater from inside the city of heroes file.

For some reason, you seem to need to install COH from inside the file on some XP systems.

Also, you might trying looking in the cohupdater.exe.exp.log file. (It's just a text file so you can open with notepad.) It should have an error message detailing what is causing the updater to crash.

Yes I was. I would lag every now again but nothing that would ruin the game. And load times were 30 seconds max. Sure I couldn't get involved in group events but that's ok because I like to solo.

This seems to have worked. It's installing again, so hopefully I'll be able to play again. Thank you kindly.

Hi there people. New to the forums, but not new to the game. I just recently started playing again, and I'm playing on a Windows 7 32 bit pro OS. Upon the game crashing, I troubleshot the game for compatibility issues, and it keeps telliong me that the COH updater is incompatible, and that I should be running the game in XP Service pack 2. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Here is a copy of My COH Helper log:

Here's something else to try.

1) Copy your the cohupdater.exe and pigg folder and save in another folder
2) uninstall coh using the uninstall.exe.
3) copy the cohupdater.exe and pigg folder back into your city of heroes file
4) run cohupdater from inside the city of heroes file.

For some reason, you seem to need to install COH from inside the file on some XP systems.

Also, you might trying looking in the cohupdater.exe.exp.log file. (It's just a text file so you can open with notepad.) It should have an error message detailing what is causing the updater to crash.

This method is the fix that worked for me, I HIGHLY recommend this process to anyone having these issues.

Uriel,

Are you running the game in XP mode? Win7 Pro effectively runs a copy of XP if you are - I would expect that to be at SP3 though. (Lower versions of Win7 only emulate XP).
I assume that your version of Win7 is a retail or OEM version, the beta versions are possibly earlier if they are still activated.
In any event the game runs fine in Native Win7 so no need to run in XP Mode.

Mind of Gaia lvl 50 Defiant's first Mind/Storm 'troller.
Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant

Does the complete edition of going rouge use a new differant updater without the loop problem?

Bit off topic, and I apologize for that, but the final pre-release candidate Win7 betas should all be in the self-destruct bin by now. (This was slotted to happen in June, with March being the beginning of the rolling restarts every hour.)

So, it should be safe to assume anyone running Win7 is running OEM or retail. (Or, if otherwise, I prefer keeping my plausible deniability intact.)

Back to the most recent topic... in my experience, I don't have to run in compat mode (running Win7 64bit home), though I do have to run as admin. (Don't know if this would affect you or not.) I remember, when I first installed, having issues with it claiming I had to run in compat mode... but I'm pretty sure all I did was activate "run as admin" (which is an option in the program's properties, if you're not familiar) and it works fine for me. (YMMV, but might be worth a try to see if it's an easy fix.)
