You've picked a good MM to start out with, the AI currently favours melee pets and /dark is fun and active and powerful and survivable.
Playing a MM instead of a brute requires a couple of adjustments.
The biggest one is getting used to the idea that you personally aren't doing much damage. Fortunately something killed by a pet is just as dead
The second adjustment is that your secondary consists of support powers. Dark Miasma has several fantastic tools to help your pets and your team, get to know them and use them whenever they're recharged.
You know what it's like to run a melee toon on a good team. You're hitting like a freight train and the mobs can barely scratch you, because some guys back there are doing a decent job with buffs and debuffs. Well, now your job is to spam the -tohit and -resist and even heals, so that your pets last longer and hit harder.
I don't know if anyone has written a demon/dark guide but the necro/dark guides might be of some help, and of course the Defender and Corr forums have very helpful Dark Miasma guides.
Parting thoughts -
I don't micromanage my pets, it annoys the hell out of me. If one of them runs off and gets himself killed, there's another one just waiting to be summoned, why stress out? They'll generally follow you around until the violence starts, so get a feel for how close you can get to mobs before the pets start attacking.
This doesn't hurt my play much, IMHO. I only have 4 level 50 toons, but 2 of those are MMs and I've got another at 47 who might even hit 50 next weekend.
Bodyguard mode - if you don't know what that is, do a forum search. Your /dark MM could become as survivable as your toughest brute if you're doing it right.
GL, have fun! -
Quote:True, but you're getting XP and drops the whole timeI would have to do five tips and the morality mission to switch to Villain. Then I would have to switch back to Rogue which will take two days. Then I have to switch to Hero which will take two more days. Then back to Vigilante which will take two more days. That is like a week or so.

Quote:^^^ THIS! The seekers give you a few seconds of complete safety to get that PGT planted while the crowd is distracted.I usually use Seekers to take aggro, run in and plant poison trap, then go to town with everything else.
Soloing at +0x8 I don't bother with seekers, but at higher difficulties they add a lot of survivability. If the FFG is a little late catching up to you for a couple of seconds while you're running into the middle of the group, it can get very messy.
They're also nice for the tougher crowds on task forces.
And of course you don't walk out of the tutorial as a softcapped engine of death, seekers are very helpful while leveling. -
Yeah, I'm always happy to see the better support powersets on a team, whether MM, Defender, Corr or 'troller. Those powersets are so fantastic that even the watered down versions given to MMs become overpowered on teams with a couple of complementary builds that are played half-decently.

Quote:If a squishy player is running around with absolutely zero defence of their own, I sure as heck don't feel bad that I can't softcap them with my trapper's FFG. Those guys need to take responsibility for their own squishy hide, they can eat purples to make up the difference or spend the whole mish admiring the floor for all I care.I really like my level 50 Bots/FF. With Alpha slotting and Power Boost, I can soft cap a teammate from 0. I think I'm at 44% right now. As soon as the Strike Pack hits, I expect to be past 45%.
In practice you've often got several teammates running maneuvers, or maybe a Dark or Stormie or Crab with a toggle +DEF power to add to the FFG. -
Quote:With that much buffing, your scrappers were probably as survivable as the average solo tank.an ITF, on my Demon Summoning/Thermal. We had no tank nor brute nor empath . Two scrappers were excellent. We had a Robot/FF MM, a kinetic controller, another controller, a dominator, a bane spider.
A granite tank would have been superfluous on that team, he'd gain very little survivability from the buffs. Stacking bubbles and crab defences and therm resists onto a scrapper built for damage OTOH...
There's a lot of ways to build ridiculously good teams, and MMs can be a big part of the mix. -
I can only speak firsthand to bots/FF, bots/traps and necro/dark.
None of them are effective in traditional blueside Hami tactics. Any of them are OK in a redside hami i.e. MMs are only there to taunt with their sacrificial pets.
They're all fantastic in ship raids. The lich spams heals like crazy, your passive buffs help more people, and there are huge crowds for your pets to AOE.
They're all crap at speedruns, don't even bother. Kill-all or kill-most is where you'll shine.
Bots/traps is a stereotypical AV build. It also provides lots of defence for the entire team and absolutely mulches crowds. Mine has moLRSF, moBSF, moSTF, not sure about Khan.
Disclaimer - MMs aren't great at the new TFs.
Necro/dark isn't an allstar TF build like bots/traps but it adds a ton of survivability to the team. I love to see a Dark Miasma toon on my team no matter what AT.
Bubblers are nice to be teamed with but I find them boring as hell to play, ymmv.
Teaming with a good stormy is a rare pleasure. Teaming with a bad stormy... -
The +RES and +DEF unique procs grant the bonus to any pet within the MM's "aura", that's a fairly large radius, I don't recall exactly how big at the moment.
Yes but the protbots bubble your tier1 and tier3 pets twice, hence 22% or so. -

Quote:I've got a level 50 bots/ff and a level 50 bots/traps.How does traps play versus ff?
...With so much defense, I feel like I am never going to be taken down, but I am going to take all night in the process, lol.
I haven't played the bubbler since my trapper hit level 32. My trapper has the most MO badges of all my toons, and has no trouble getting invited to teams.
nice things about bubblers:
- lots of defence
- a variety of knockback powers
nice things about trappers:
- lots of defence
- AOE -resist, essentially makes each pet and teammate do extra damage
- AOE -regen, essentially makes bosses/EBs/AVs die faster
- seeker drones can safely take the alpha strike
- caltrops and trip mine aren't the best attack powers but FF has zero attacks.
The only advantage of FF over traps is that FFG is on a timer and the big FF bubble isn't.
If you like the safety play a trapper. If you like the KB powers play a stormie. The only reason to play a bubbler is if you like to chat in the middle of task forces and ship raids. -
Quote:Reichsman is extremely annoying for everyone. Just run away from him and meet the ambushes in the hallway, he won't chase. Eventually the ambushes will stop and you can tackle him by himself.Your or your teammates provoke does NOTHING to Apex halberds. That said, I havent even tried Apex or Tin Mage. I am talking about Reichsman, Romulus (twice in the ITF), and Lady Grey, specifically save Penny or the weakend Hammi mission.
My bots/traps and necro/dark has been OK in kill all ITFs.
Weakened Hami is annoying by design. You can feed your top-tier pet an EoE to make life easier. -

I have mixed experiences with the high level TFs.
My bots/traps has done most of the high level TFs, and in fact has more MO badges then any of my other toons.
On "kill all" or "kill most" TFs she excels. Big groups to debuff while the pets spam aoes, hooray!
On speedruns she's not much use until the boss fights, i.e. can't stealth worth beans with the pets up, even FFG draws aggro.
My first STF was a good example. The first mish is tailor-made for a trapper, a big crowd of enemies spawn in a predictable location, and we rolled over them.
The next mishes were OK, but when we got to Cap the others guys were stealthing from security chief to security chief and me and the pets couldn't keep up. One of the ambushes spawned right on top of me, and ISTR that was a MO run and the heroes were freaking out, but I got to show off a little and demonstrate how masterminds treat Arachnos ambushes . So I wasn't dying constantly, but the team's tactics didn't make use of my mastermind, I might as well have doorsat until the last fight and had someone 'port me in.
I haven't run Apex and Tin Man since the first week they came out, the minelayers and BM were annoying and I was mostly useless. I'll have to try it again, hopefully people have figured out some tricks. -
Quote:Alignment meritsEdit: I went to the Merit Vendor and the PerfShifter Recipes cost between 50-150 Merits
http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Alignment_Merit -
The Performance Shifter endurance proc is a fantastic IO for a new toon where endurance is always a problem.
Your build doesn't have any IOs at all, and you're probably about to tell me you can't afford anything fancy. However, since you're level 20+ you're getting tips. If you run those tip mishes + alignment mishes it only takes 1 villain merit to buy the PerfShifter proc, it's a bargain. Of course you're getting XP and drops while running the tip mishes too. -
Quote:Bots/traps is a late bloomer so if you hate pets you'll never grind it to lvl 32.I have a Bots/Traps MM, don't really play it because in every game I've ever played I have hated managing pets. Heck, on my Controllers & Doms I barely ever summon the t9 pets because even though I don't have to manage them they tend to run off and aggro completely different mobs.
Obviously ya gotta play what you enjoy we now resume our Defender conversation. -
Quote:At 50 you're totally correct, but in my teens/20s/30s I want every scrap of extra acc/rech/mez ASAP to keep myself alive.I have to disagree with this part - as much as these controls are the bread and butter of a plant dom, 6 slots in any power is WAY overkill when you can frankenslot cheap set IO's, unless you are going for IO set bonuses from the 6th slot or you are 5 slotting a set that has a gap in the enhancement values (like obliteration not giving much end redux).
I figure freespecs fall from the sky and the respec trials are plentiful, I personally frankenslot what makes sense today and don't even plan a final build until level 40-ish. The OP was having a hard time getting rolling with doms, let's not scrooge the slots
But for the endgame I expect you're totally correct. -
-
I've never tried it, but ISTR reading that feeding red insps to your pet before blowing him up affects detonation's damage?
I've been meaning to try this power out for a while, maybe I'll make use of that 3rd build... -
I'm far from a Dom expert, but something I read in a long forgotten thread transformed my mid-teens plants/thorns from a frustrating wuss into a fun toon.
You've got a bunch of melee attacks, but you don't have the lovely defence/resists/regen that melee toons use to keep themselves alive. If you wade into crowds you won't last long.
Instead of passive survival powers, you have ACTIVE survival powers. If every critter in the crowd is confused or held or asleep, you're as safe as a granite tank.
I run superspeed so it's easy to position myself for surprise attacks. First attack is always seeds of confusion, it's the core of the set. If anything wasn't confused, hit them with the ST hold. Now you're safe, switch to attack mode and hit them hard, you want the mobs down before confuse wears off.
6-slot seeds of confusion ASAP. Frankenslot for acc/rech/confuse, those recipes are dirt cheap.
6-slot the ST hold, it's your plan B. (There is no plan C). Frankenslot for acc/rech/hold with lovely cheap recipes.
I'm only in the mid 30's now, quite frankly most nights I only have enough mental energy to play a brute... Duh... But the basic playstyle hasn't changed much. Priority one is preventing incoming attacks, but once I'm safe I now have more attacks to pick from. -
Quote:There are too many awesome team combos to list.3 Colds, 2 Empaths, and rest whatever.....
no reason for an all-defender crew of this make wouldnt steamroll an ITF....
Here's a challenge, what mix of defenders would NOT steamroll an ITF?
All bubblers is the only outright terrible combo I can think of, no debuffs at all. -
Quote:I'll go off-topic from the defender's forum but totally on-topic for solo trappers - Have you considered a /traps mastermind?I know that Defenders have offensive attacks as a secondary for a reason, I don't expect blaster-level damage output from them. But I would like to be better able to solo mobs without spending a longish amount of time setting up trip mines or a couple mortars before every pull.
I realize Masterminds might not be your thing, but thugs and bots have a lot of synergy with traps, i.e. it's easy to defence softcap yourself and your pets. Running in bodyguard mode makes you even more durable.
Everyone thinks of bots/traps as an AV killer, but mine solos at +0x8 very casually, i.e. just run into crowds and lay waste. At +1x8 I have to pay attention, i.e. actually use seekers and maybe triage beacon. +2x8 is challanging, I'm healing a lot, losing pets and using insps. -

Quote:It's a good mule for 5 slots of Absolute Amazement, one of the cheaper purple sets. What is the value? Mids shows a -6.65% To Hit, which doesn't seem much...
Also, what are the best sets?
I use seekers mostly for eating alpha strikes, which is nice solo and on unbalanced (or plain bad) teams. On a moderately competent team you won't need them for anything but AVs.
