People already have given you lots of excellent advice, but here's another point:
Quote:Lvl 30 set IOs aren't just for LVL 30s. Many builders want their set bonuses to exemp down as low as possible and lvl 30-32 is exactly the point where an average slotted set is as good or better as SOs.I have about 20 mil on my 30 tanker, and he is looking at IO's that are 100+ mil, so my question is how do I get these IO's.
So you aren't competing with other LVL 30s for those IOs. You're competing with LVL 50s. Who can earn millions a mish without even doing anything special.
So you have 2 paths, - either get a 50 for yourself, or turn off XP and farm at LVL 30, so that those 50s would pay you for your drops and stuff you rolled for merits, until you'll have enough INF to buy whatever shiny you're after.
The latter approach requires a bit less upfront investment, but it's not as fun, at least for me. I love getting XP. -
Quote:thirded. Just for experiment sake I just have done a +4/x8 no bosses radio with my semi-IOed lvl 49 SD/Elec... Half the spawns with SC other half with SC removed from the trays.I am glad that I did not spend alot of time enjoying its current "state" because it would kinda suck, but that ONE power does not "define" the set. Now, if they touch AAO, THEN I will be pretty unhappy.
Ok, no SC means no "speed of farm" (mainly because you got more strays with full health) but you still can do pretty much everything you did with SC. And it was still fun to play. -
Hmm... Let's start with the simpliest reason... Have you spent a few days offline in a hosp/uni (after you've logged in and got the badge) to charge it?
-
Truth is, 90% of those team leaders don't know what the heck they're doing either. I'm not even talking about "Hey, why U don't heel, ur a defebser! and khelds suck, they're doing KB and spawn cyst" team leader from hell. Just an average PuG leader.
They're players just like you or me, not some uber-gurus who know ParagonWiki by heart. And CoX itself is very forgiving of sub-optimal gameplay, outside of the stuff like MoRSF and so on. (Yes, better is better is better, I'm not condoning ignorance and bad habits, and so on. But really, no teaming of any kind because you can't yet make an AV solo build or whatever is silly too.) -
Excellent idea. I don't even care what kind of powers they would be, it's For SCIENCE!!!!! Mwahahahaha!
And Dr. Aeon's Patron arc... with new tech from the clone arcs... -
Quote:Well, you may not notice them at low levels, but they certainly aren't useless ESPECIALLY for a blaster. Two self-buffs most blasters have (Aim and Build Up) when used together add 150% to your damage, for instance.I was hoping someone could explane what Buffs and DeBuffs do exactly..i know it's a dumb question but i can't seem to get my head around it. I'm a blaster and not sure if they are even usefull to me. Any help would be great. Thanks.
Now, if a power on its own does, say, 20 damage at your level... Three-slotting it for damage with single origin enhancements would boost this to about 38. When you are under aim and build up effect, that power's damage is adding another 30 to the total, - that's 68 damage. A resistance debuff on an enemy is equivalent to damage buff on you.
To-hit, accuracy and defense are more complex to explain, you may want to read this: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=185167 Shorter version is that 45% defense makes you pretty much invulnerable to 90% of things in PvE. (a forcefield defender can boost allies' defenses to 40% or more.) a to-hit debuff on an enemy is equivalent to a defense buff on you.
Resistance is straightforward, you take less damage from an attack.
Slow, - there are two types of slow movement slow (more of an annoyance/convenience, depending on which end of a slow-inducing power you are.) and recharge slow, - well, enemies shooting less often at you translates to less damage rather straightforwardly.
Recharge buff (e.g. from Hasten) is the opposite of slow. each 100% of recharge buff halve the recharge time of powers. so that power that normally recharges in 10 seconds would recharge in 5 if 3-slotted with SOs, and in 2.5 if you've slotted it and are under effects, of say, Accelerate Metabolism (30%) and Hasten (70%) -
Welcome. And if you want to try TFs/SFs/raids on Union, join chat channel "sals badgehunters". Despite its name it's not just for dedicated badgers, and is pretty much Union's "Teams looking for players" channel.

I didn't say "impossible", just "harder".

Well, at high levels SO-only rad would have problems soloing (Judging by my Rad/Rad main. Carnie mistresses etc. still can kill you easily, near-perma AM, stacked stun and all.)
As for Traps... I have a Traps defender in the low 30s and like him, but on a large team it suffers from "everything's dead just after you deployed your AM and PGT" problem. You can fix it with enough +rech, I guess, but that's expensive slotting.
As for FF in general, - yes, that's one-trick pony set if there ever was one, but that's the point, - it does that one trick perfectly with minimal investment.
BS or Katana scrapper... Now that's something worth thinking about in this context... Thanks for great idea! -
Quote:Well, as experience shows, enough nagging from players CAN make devs reconsider even things explicitly stated as ironclad policies and/or technical impossibilities, even if it may take a few years. (Inf transfers and power customization being the poster children.)Yes... I really really and truly thought it was a conspiracy for eye wear *rolleyes*
And yes, as happy as I would be to have it fixed, I do think the complete absence of redname comment, the lack of being in known bug lists despite being well and truly brought up in beta means it ain't gonna be fixed for a long time if ever.
For something like font size on a single screen, which is neither that deeply game-altering nor as technically difficult as above examples, chances are devs will listen eventually. -
Quote:Human-only PB? well, that's no fake, that IS Light powerset...Hi all, I'm making a Kylie Minogue-inspired character with light manipulation powers, but picking the right power sets is kind of difficult. FF/energy is what I have right now, and I like it enough, but I'm open to suggestions.
If you want a defender, then I'd personally try a /Rad recolored bright blue or yellow... -
Quote:I think what is meant by this "Mission Quality of Life" stuff is that the last glowie/hostage/mob/boss on the map are (usually) highlighted once you get reasonable close to them. Very handy when it works.I'm looking at the i17 notes and I saw something that caught my eye which said "Mission Quality of Life Improvements." How different are the missions now than before?
And also I never really cared for how much DPS I can pump out or anything, just anything that seems fun I guess. When I played with warshades/peacebringers they seemed like a really unique class. Going rogue also seems to be coming up as well -
Thought about it for a while now... You don't have bajillion inf, and/or patience for bids on rare stuff to fill (say, you're very new or very casual player), but you still want your character to be AWESOME. What AT/powers would fit the bill?
The best I could come up with is FF/Ice with Leadership, - played and built even half-competently it is all-caps awesome addition to any team, and can solo decently thanks to two blaster-damage attacks and two ST holds. No need for perma-anything, and the only thing that would be nice to have and requires sets is self-softcap.
Are there any other combinations? -
Well, I envy ANYONE who considers 4*3 pixel numbers readable and aesthetically pleasing....
-
Quote:Well, always wondered how to make screenshots on those screens. PrtScr isn't working...Send your screenshots to Castle because he says they're readable on the dev's monitors.
As for devs saying it works for them... Well, I hope they can be convinced the problem is real. -
Is there any way to return to pre I-17 nice, big, READABLE font for enhancement levels in the slotting screen?
The one used currently drove me nuts the first 5 minutes after I returned to the game after 3 months. -
Quote:Can't speak for "the people", naturally but... Personal "yes" to both questions. My levelling in high teens is always Montague->Faultline->Mercedes Sheldon(first two arcs, anyway. 3rd is fine, but Atta's cave is way too big for casual soloing.)->Doc Delilah->Agent G. It's the best content in the entire game, and my only problem with it is that there aren't couple more arcs for 15-19.Also, as for dev-written content that doesn't use new art, the devs did a bit of that with the Mercedes Sheldon contact. Was that successful? I'm not saying it was or it wasn't, but I suspect any movement by the devs to create new content without new art will fare about the same as the Sheldon arcs. Imagine the Sheldon missions attached to doors in DA, featuring Banished Pantheon instead of Warriors, Carnies, or whatever. Does that work for you?
(Here's a related content question: would people play the Montague arc if it didn't give the Midnighter badge?)
By the way, WWTF (and yes, there definitely should be one.) could be fun as a sub-30 TF, because everything we have now in that level range is designed like that Monty Python "spam" sketch. Council, Council, Council, baked beans and Council. (or Freaks, or CW.) Comic book WW fought pretty much every prominent villain group there is, so it would be easy to design a story for her TF that isn't quite as monotonous. (then again, that sort of variety didn't save Posi TF... ) -
Others have quality assurance, we have Quality ARACHNOS! Long live QA!
Welcome, and good hunting! And even on your worst day remember, you are the most important people there, whether or not others realize that. Developers without QA only produce epic fail. -
Well, I guess, when you need dozens of IOs at once and don't want Field Crafter or extra recipe storage, paying a little extra to the guy who did most of the job for you is fair enough.
As for salvage... Well, isn't it still about twice as cheap compared to typical prices pre-AE, pre-new difficulty settings? Even on the worst days?
So, the only thing that is inflating at FTL speeds is price of various shinies. And however you look at it, flipping has almost nothing to do with it. Unless the simple act of listing them is somehow ebil flipping. You need months to really flip purples or LotGs or whatever with any sort of profit margin that justifies market slots and inf frozen in bids. (And yes, I tried that.) No doubt, there is some flipping going on, but I would be greatly surprised if it's the main driver of the prices.
So, it's TFers, ticket farmers, just lucky random guys and gals who got a shiny they have no use for. They go to the market, they see the crafted price, they craft, they list it at last 5+a little. No villains in the plot, except maybe ebil farmers, but that's another story and another forum. (not that I like the situation one bit, TBH, even when I'm on the selling side. These eight-figures are ridiculous.)
Ok, I'm not a market guru, I don't even read this forum that often, but I do use IOs and sets, I get salvage and recipe drops, like everybody else does, and have to do something with them. So I'm entitled to my foolish opinion too , am I not? -
Quote:Thanks these suggestions are very helpful. A few comments:Okay going down your build. You're defense capped. You have very little to fear unless you're running into large +50 mobs or stuff with strong defense debuffs. Get in there, taunt, smack stuff up, and generally make a nuisance of yourself!
1: Deflection is overslotted for defense. Anything more than 3 straight up defense IOs is essentially wasted. If you got rid of one defense IO you could free up a slot for elsewhere in the build.
2: Combat Jumping is overslotted. I can see you wanting to three slot the Zephyrs to take advantage of KB protection when Active Defense isn't up.
3: Health is overslotted. WAY overslotted. At least two of those slots could be quite useful elsewhere.
4: Look at maybe dropping your Epic/Ancillary and Leadership pools. Look at the Fighting pool instead. It'll keep you above defense cap, and will also add a decent amount of resistance. And that's only if you slot it with End Reduction. If you actually slot for defense, you'll give yourself a nice comfortable padding against successful defense debuffs. If you're worried about End consumption,l grab Conserve power and three-slot recharges.
5: In general, you're just way, WAY overbuilt for recharge. Essentially scrapperthink. Concentrate a bit more on accuracy and EndRedux.
6: Build for more accuracy. This way you don't have to run with an end-heavy toggle like Focused Accuracy.
1) Well, it's not overslotted if these were lower level LotGs, as I eventually plan...
2) No, it's not because of -KB it's to get AoE defense. If there were any other well-exempable source of it I'd be quite happy with just one (they're rare and expensive, for one thing.) Just have switched from Rikti ti Cimerorans as my "training" mob, and the fact that AoE defence is not capped yet is quite noticeable... (I'm fine against +0/x5s, but +1/x8s wipe the floor with me unless I eat a purple before each fight) Thinking of three-slotting high-level Aegis somewhere as a temporary measure, although it won't be exactly cheap either.
3) Well, I suspected as much... Foprtunately 5th and 6th slot aren't yet there, so it may be changed to just shinies+Numina heal easily.
4) Well, I didn't want Fighting mostly because I couldn't find a way to keep it while exemped @30 without some very obviously gimp choices. For lvls 35+ your build is obviously much better... Something to think about.
5) Good idea and easily done, would do just that.
6) As I said FA is there mostly for set bonuses and +perception, still the less I have to use it the better.
Again, thanks for very useful build advice. -
Quote:I understand that quite well, and that's why I never ever pl a new powerset, let alone AT. The problem is that while I didn't PL the tank (if you don't count lvls 10-15, I was sick and tired of the Hollows... ) I didn't team much either. One Synapse TF during DXP (and only because there was a tank already.) maybe a couple PuG teams early on.One question, no condemnation. Did you PL this tank or did you run up the levels in a more controlled manner? Usually those who have a hard time with aggro controls are those who level very quickly. Picking up powers willy-nilly isn't conducive to learning how to use the power effectively when it's still relatively low powered. As such, with a full selection of powers, it can sometimes be very confusing to figure out what a good pattern of use is. In effect, too many choices.
I also probably made a few build mistakes... Here's more or less the build I plan to use when I hit 50 (still lvl 45) Hami-Os, naturally, aren't yet there, and common DefBuff IOs would be replaced with LoTGs (for +regen), and I still haven't got two BoTzs -KB (I want them to be fairly low level...)
The idea was more or less to avoid expensive set-slotting attacks if at all possible (so that they could be re-slotted without respec if I misjudged what they ought to be slotted for), and avoid Fighting pool. Focused Accuracy is there solely as a set mule/prerequisite for PP (I wanted BU and two nukes to recharge simultanrously) and for fighting Night Widows, bubbled Rikti, and other situations where you may want to trade End for accuracy/perception. Most sets are around lvl 25-35, except when it made little sense.
The problem, as I see is that I took too much powers from the primary to early, so at first I had excuse of having too little attacks and no Taunt to be effective, then it was because I haven't got all the set bonuses I wanted, then I plainly decided that I'm not a good tank...
EDIT: Slot levels aren't at all like he levels I actually placed them, I've lost my original buildfile somewhere, and had to recreate it on the fly.

Quote:Basically what I'm doing now, only with Borea's missions instead of radios. (Those +def sets have to be purchased with _something_, and Rikti drop Positronic Matrices and Rikti Alloys fairly reliably at these difficulties, not to mention more inf in general...) "Taunting then breaking LoS" method works, but as you have said, not every team likes this style of tanking, and not every map allows it. And everything else... Had it been a real team, half the aggro would be somewhere I don't want it, or so it seems to me.
Here's something you may want to try out, set your difficulty to 6 man team, even level mobs and get a radio mission of easy mobs. Enter the mission solo and practice gathering groups up and clumping them tight. That's the best way I can think of to get your techniques down, and you'll be able to practice them by yourself. -
Wow, thanks for all those replies, lots of useful (to me, anyway) advice!
Quote:First one that wasn't deleted after dinging 15 or so, anyway. Now, as to what you do to hold aggro - I gather this is a first tanker?
Quote:You should take Taunt, if you haven't yet, and open with it. Then aim for the spawns standing away from where you Taunted, and Shield Charge them. You should have also taken Against All Odds; this buffs your damage and gives you an aura that keeps nearby mobs taunted. Thanks to Against all Odds, your Shield Charge will do more damage after you get some mobs within its range first.
Quote:Wheel your camera as far back as it will go. Try to watch whether there are loose mobs from a spawn, or whether a controller's pets have aggroed another spawn. Fire off a Taunt at those if it is up and you can; otherwise just try to intercept as well as you can.
/bind BUTTON4 "follow"
/bind F "follow$$camreset$$camdist 20"
instead of the other way around I use on the most characters... (button 5 is Tab with a priority for cysts, voids and sappers, and Tab itself is for whatever I'm hunting (glowies, badge mobs, etc.) That probably could be left alone. ) -
Quote:Sorry for being unclear. I never ever for a moment thought that tankers AS A CLASS are failure. The whole post was exactly about that single point: I discovered that I personally suck at tanking, by my own standards of mostly-squishie player. (My first 50 was a scrapper, but most-played alt is rad/rad defender, and also Traps/Dark.)Sorry, you've made your mind up that it sucks. Nothing to see here. Move along. Go start a scrapper.
Then YOU have failed. Not the tanker class.
Quote:LOL! Performance anxiety? Are you ****ing me?
Thanks for the advice and encouragement part, though. It helped.
And whether or not I would get better at tanking, trying it was interesting. (and still is, although not in a sense I thought)
