Uber Noob... Okay... Somewhat Uber Noob...

Yeah... so I've been playing City of Heroes on and off for about 6 months and I still consider myself an uber noob. I have been playing mostly CoV simply because it has always been an interest of mine to totally be the bad guy. And also, the Epic Archetype are honestly cool.

Anyway, I made it about as far as level 20 and then scratched my head. I know I'm missing a lot of stuff since I'm basically just running the missions that are given me by the contacts. No TFs, no PvP (which I won't do anyway) etc. I'm not a huge fan of working in teams because honestly, since I feel like I don't know what I'm doing, I'm going to let the other players down and even though its an MMO and we're all basically strangers, well... it still stinks for me.

I'm a guy who enjoys stories, creating characters and mixing things up. I'm not a min/maxer who wants to sit down and figure out how to debuff the elite boss the fastest so I can kill it in one shot. I want to follow the storylines, get a better handle on everything and go from there.

So... I guess this is a plea for help here. Where do I go from here? Should I stay on the lighter volume servers until I feel more comfortable? My highest character is on Freedom on the Red side at the moment.

Any help (or further clarification from me as far as where I am) would be appreciated!

Jump in the deep end and join some teams. You'll learn how best to work with a team by being in them.

I felt like that too... for a long time. You just have to do as Psychoti said and jump in. Teaming really does add so much to the game. In fact, before I started joining (and eventually starting) my own teams, I really did feel like quitting. Despite the fact that I saw ENORMOUS potential in creating fun characters.

I am a lot like you in that I enjoy making the character and his story as much if not more than actually playing the game. Another thing that might keep ya going is to try and get involved in a light RP team. Check your server's forum for things that are going on or join a global channel or two.

Truth is, 90% of those team leaders don't know what the heck they're doing either. I'm not even talking about "Hey, why U don't heel, ur a defebser! and khelds suck, they're doing KB and spawn cyst" team leader from hell. Just an average PuG leader.

They're players just like you or me, not some uber-gurus who know ParagonWiki by heart. And CoX itself is very forgiving of sub-optimal gameplay, outside of the stuff like MoRSF and so on. (Yes, better is better is better, I'm not condoning ignorance and bad habits, and so on. But really, no teaming of any kind because you can't yet make an AV solo build or whatever is silly too.)

I find CoV somewhat more boring than the CoH side. I think it's because there are fewer zones and you stay in a single zone for a lot longer than CoH. CoH also have multiple zones that cover the same level ranges.

While the reduction in travel time between missions is appreciated, the scenery is rather static. The upside is CoV is a much more dangerous place where there are many a purple critter in large enough mobs in Port Oakes that can be a serious hazard for a Villain have a way to travel off of street level. This can either make traveling to a mission exciting or a huge pain in the butt. In CoV the non "hazard" have rather manageable mob sizes for a lone Hero trying to make it to a mission entrance, at least not instantly fatal.

And soloing in CoH, you have contacts coming out of your ears (assuming you are using the contact system) so you don't need to use the police scanner unless you are looking to get a bank mission for the reward. CoV does have better mission stories, at least better than the original CoH missions stories. Zones added later or revamped later than CoV stories improved as the devs got better at writing them.

This. I, too, was too intimidated at first to team much. But once you get into it, you'll find most people actually remember their newb days and are more than happy to help teach you (plus, that makes us "vets" feel smart ) or at least cut you a bunch of slack. I used to announce right away that I was fairly new and not used to teaming, and most of the responses were "Ha! Don't worry, we'll show you what to do if we need to. " After a few times, I realized I was a lot more adequate player than I thought.

Dec out.

The best way to learn how to use your powers, and how they affect your team is to join a team.

You will meet alot of people who think they know alot about the game, but really don't, but you will also meet some people who will hopefully be able to guide you down the right path for using your powers to the best of their uses.

Also, check out the AT forums, for threads on your particular power chocies to get a feel on how others think they should be used, but rememebr that whatever combination you took, it can get to 50, and it can be good.

You may also want to embrace your altitis, rolling a few characters in different ATs, if your not sure if what you first picked suits your playstyle exactly. and of course, to get some background info on the mechanics of the game check out paragonwiki, which should let you figure out how your powers fit in.

Like everyone said, get one some teams. Do paper missions or something.

You won't understand how well you know the game until you get some really crap leader. Leaders do lead. Or, at least, they set the mission quickly and make sure to let the team know when they are recruiting. I'll say things like "four is good, this team is solid" which works whether it is or not. Morale is key. There are no bad team combos.

If you can solo, you can rock a team. If anyone has any issues with you, say knocking back everything on earth, they'll let you know.

Once you're on some teams, you probably need to lead some. The fact that you're concerned makes me realize you'll be a good leader. But never, ever use the term healer. Makes people like me flinch. I'd rather have more control anyday. They don't have insp to lock down 10 enemies.

This is your best bet, many of us vets are mentors and are willing to spend one on one time with you. I think if you find someone to buddy with you'll find you are in teams and enjoying the game on a whole new level before you know it.

If for no other reason, join the N P C channel and you'll always have people available to answer questions, offer advice and/or lend a hand where needed.

In the chat box in the game type: /CHAN_JOIN "N P C"

CoH is pretty accommodating to players who enjoy soloing, but, if case you haven't already discovered, you find two things that will become very clear in your 20's:
1) Not every mission or story arc can be solo'd.
2) Some archetypes are better suited to soloing than others.

I think what you're seeing in responses here is entirely indicative of what you're gonna find in-game, as well.

i.e. Helpful vet players eager to act all "heroic" with newbs.

Use the global channels mentioned above, or look for me or any of the other posters here in-game (I'm @Cougarific on Freedom). And we'll show you a good time (hopefully) that you'll be able to re-create on your own in no time.

Just keep reminding yourself that this is a MULTI-PLAYER online game, and this PARTICULAR community happens to be the smartest, funniest, most helpful community out there. Use it.
