Try either dark or traps as your primary and pair either with dark blast. A traps/dark is hilarious good fun to play and has ridiculous survivability for a support class. You mentioned you don't like sitting around setting things up, so just be more aggressive with how you set your traps. Summon the FFG, hop in, set PGT, hop out, trap 'em with tenebrous tentacles, lay down your 'trops and acid mortar, and start blasting away. It's good times. I run mine on 0/7 currently and I have no problems.

Quote:I've participated and won a few honourable mentions in these contests, but I watched this one from the background as I personally couldn't come up with a good absence of colour themed character (although someone mentioned a creepy black and white clown that they thought they should have made and I kicked myself for not thinking of something so very simple). I've always admired the professionalism of the Legion in how they handle the large contests and their willingness to dole out hundreds of millions twice a week, and I was extremely impressed when a few of them actually got right into the contest themselves and shifted into gray scale costumes. I liked how, despite being a black, white, and shades of gray contest, the Legion characters themselves each had a different take on which shades should go where, resulting in their usual matching uniforms all looking very, very unique. It was kinda coolI didn't understand the outrageous amount of rage last night. The entire situation was compromised by the supreme oddity of a zombie invasion followed by a Mapserve. Things got pretty nuts, people got REALLY rude, and I think it all added to the usual amount of "That's not fair I wanted to win"-ness going on. If people don't like it, they don't have to enter. If people feel they should have done better, they should just enter again. The contests are so frequent that everyone has a chance to shine at some point.
Personally speaking, there's nothing wrong with a simple costume if it's effective.
You can't make everyone happy.
The zombie invasion sucked, and a couple of characters actually predicted it before the contest even started. It's nothing really new, as it's happened before with Rikti invasions, but it still sucked. The mapserve really sucked
I do have to disagree with you, Camille, as it was so blatantly obvious why people became upset. The Legion let someone continue for a good 20 to 30 minutes with his rant against another character for what was a common occurrence (he was nudged off the ledge, then he threatened to report people, loudly and repeatedly, for throwing snowballs), and only once did a member of the host group ask, "What's going on here?" As Matt's pointed out, that person was then rewarded handsomely with the top prize after he had told people to shut up and that they had no hope of winning.
Frankly, the excuse that "it fit the requirements of the contest" doesn't really cut it here. The requirement of being in black, white, and shades of gray was adhered to by almost everyone in attendance (although I'm pretty sure I saw one person in bright red and another with green armor...the instructions were so clear!) met those requirements. I was surprised at how many actually made a gray scale costume that worked conceptually. Personally, I wasn't impressed with the choice but I respect the right of the contest holders to make it. It did look, however, like the overall perception held by many in multiple channels that the Legion's judgment was questionable. The admission that channels weren't being watched and the player's conduct didn't factor in at all doesn't make matters much better.
I'm sorry to say that I found the entire night's events very unfortunate. -
How are you slotting your PGT? Up until now, I've been under the assumption that slotting for recharge was the way to go.
-
But...but...what will I do with all these "Defenders and Corruptors united forever, LOLing at Controllers" pins I bought us?!
-
Sonic. You're rare, beautiful, bring fun new resistance buffs to the team, and Liquefy is a glorious, glorious power.
-
It is my heartfelt wish that we will one day get it, if only for thematic purposes. Alas...

Overstatement.
Quote:Empty Clips is lackluster but it's the only early AoE option. Whether to take it or not depends on whether your playstyle can live with single target attacks til the 20's. Things should really take off once you can glue a group in place for oil and then jump in for Hail of Bullets using ammo swapped for fire damage to ignite the slick.
Quote:I skipped Entangling arrow and Ice arrows performance has been underwhelming. As a defender the hold simply does not last very long and the powersets don't really give you much to stack with.
The second half of the second sentence is just blatantly wrong. Swap ammo + supressive fire + ice arrow = win. Look ma, I hold bosses with no hands!
Quote:Cryo beam from the munitions pool might fix that in higher levels but it's very skippable early on. -
Months too late, unfortunately. *points to the back of the line*
Quote:In one of my masochist alt moods, I rolled up a TA/DP. Nothing like mixing the weakest Defender set with a lackluster blast set. (Admittedly, being the weakest defender set is like being the shortest center in the NBA). However, my old (two years old) familiarity with TA is completely out of touch, since animation times and power effects seem to have changed. As for DP, I don't know anything.
Animation times won't actually bother you too much. I initially expected it to be so annoying that I'd want to tear out my eyes, but really, all it makes me want to do is cut myself every now and again. Hardly the same.
Quote:Which are the primary early (pre-20) choices for each set? I'm assuming that Glue Arrow and the -Res Arrows remain solid choices, as well as the novelty ammo power for DP. Aside from that, I have no idea what performs well at 50, or how many DP attacks I'll need for a decent chain.
Quote:While I'm asking questions I should know the answers to, how (in)effective are TA's debuffs against AVs? Are all of them (-acc, -dam, -res, -rec) heavily resisted by default?

Quote:Finally, is the combo better off as a corruptor? I'm familiar with the basic differences (Corrs have Scourge, Defenders have a pointless inherent, Defenders get better effects from the debuffs but lower base/cap damage, inverted power progression, etc), but I'm curious about anyone's experiences if they've tried either or both.
Pistols.
I hate pistols. My hatred for this ability burns in my loins. I find it so incredibly useless in this pairing that it's not even funny. As a corruptor, I have the option of skipping it in place of dual wield which can only be described as a glorious gift from on high. You simply do not need an extra single target attack with this character, because you won't ever be using it. For that reason alone, corruptor over defender. You've already pointed out the other reasons why the corruptor is superior to the defender, so we don't have to go over those too much.
Take full advantage of the AoEs and cones in this build, because it's how you're going to contribute most. Up until about level 35, you're going to be teaming. A lot. Almost exclusively. Because you're going to be terrible. Oh...so bad. It's not funny how much you'll want to cry. Your debuffs will seem oh so wonderful but in reality, they're not. They're ok. I used to ardently defend trick arrow as a good set, but it's really just mediocre compared to what a lot of other sets can do. It's the druid of support sets...y'know, before druids were any good. Mine eyes have opened to this, and I do have such pretty eyes.
After 35, you're going to strike out on your own with your shiny new oil slick arrow, which, when used in combination with any of your incendiary round dual pistol attacks (I recommend bullet rain, hail of bullets, or empty clips -- you're eventually going to be using all three of them, anyways), ignites your slick. This is preceded by flash arrow, glue, poison gas, and followed by acid arrow and disruption arrow. Immediately change to your chem rounds and go through your multi-target attack chain -- things should actually be dead by now. If there's stragglers or (*gasp!*) bosses, you switch to your single target attacks and finish them up. Ice arrow and suppressive fire (when you've got your ammo switched) act as an awesome boss holding combination, so you shouldn't have too much to worry about, and piercing round, despite its heavy end cost, can fill any void in your single target attack chain. I prefer not to use it because I can always throw out ice arrow or entangling arrow instead, but hey, sometimes I just like to see the animation.
I may be exaggerating when I say "strike out on your own." What I really mean to say is, "keep teaming, but you won't eat too much linoleum when you solo anymore." Really, they're just keystrokes apart. Personally, I liked it because it was completely novel, and others thought it was, too. Conceptually, the combination makes for a great weapon master/assassin-type character.
Quote:Why take the time to post to say you can't help? -
Quote:It's does happen, to be honest. I was kicked and reinvited to a team, initially because I was recruited under the impression that I was an empathy defender (which I wasn't). When the star was passed back to the original leader, he revealed that "they already had one of those and that they'd be better of with someone else" and kicked me. A private tell to said person with me informing him that I was, in fact, a trick arrow/archery defender (back when there were 6 of us over level 30), got me my spot back and an apology. I thought the entire scenario was bizarre, but it does happen. I can only imagined that it tends to happen more to players that play buffing support sets (FF, specifically).. In 5+ years of playing on Freedom, I have yet to be kicked from a team due to my powersets. I have yet to see somebody openly kicked due to their powersets. I guess how I play the game leads me to avoiding those kinds of people. If somebody is specifically looking for something in broadcast, you likely might want to avoid them.

Quote:It's definitely not the same as rad emission, as Chowder mentioned, but it's nothing to balk at if you use it well. I'm fairly indifferent to defender secondaries, really. I think they're all fun.i offered to join a LGTF sunday night or maybe it was past midnight so monday (morning?) i was rejected because /rad isnt really a debuff
and so i guess all us FF/Rad defenders cant really debuff things with irridiate can we?
whats your point of view on this /Rad defenders? -
Dark/traps is hellish good fun, although mine is a traps/dark defender. Still...tons of fun.
-
*shrug* It happens. You'll have fun with dark, though. You get to be much more aggressive once you get into the epic pool.
-
I wouldn't worry to much about it, then. You'll be either redside or blueside soon (I prefer blueside because of the larger population), and you'll find more folks to team with.

Quote:There's no fire or ice option for corruptors -- sorry. Corruptors only get access to the same pools that defenders get, not the ones available to blasters (Bleargh. A dp/ta corruptor with access to LRM? Yes please!). Your choices are dark, power, psychic, and electricity mastery.I haven't taken my corruptor blue-side yet, but don't corruptors get the defender epic's blue-side? and I wasn't aware fire or ice was an option for defenders or do corruptors get blaster epics too?
Whatever options are available, I wouldn't pick Mace (or Ice if is availabe) as Dark/Dark will completely floor the enemies tohit anyway, so you don't really need the extra defence from the shield.
Assuming Fire isn't an option (if it is then take Fire), I would probably go with Dark or Electric.
Personally, I'd go with dark mastery. Thematic fit, fun powers, titillating gameplay. -
And you plan to be playing the game for....how long?
-
You can always run tips and switch over, then switch back. Doesn't take that long.

Quote:I personally consider them to be one of the "must have" powers, simply because they're useful in both solo and group situations. You're correct about time bomb -- it's horridly useless -- but seeker drones should only ever be described as hellishly useful. When solo, you've suddenly got a tool that can not only eat the alpha, but act as a stun while simultaneously debuffing the enemies' to hit and damage. When you're in a group, it's supplemental and can help a tank that is, perhaps, struggling a bit.I'm running a DP/Traps and trying to work up a build in Mids, but I'm not familiar with Traps. I've read in countless places that Time Bomb was pretty much a waste, but I was wondering on the usefulness of Seeker Drones. Are these a "Must have" or a "If you have room" power?
-
Traps will effectively neuter anything you're going up against, you just have to make sure that you're not leaving your traps vulnerable to what you're fighting. This isn't a problem with traps like tripmine and poison gas trap because you want your enemies to impale their health and end bars on those two trapsy delicacies, but your acid mortar should be out for as long as possible. If it's mangled after two hits, you're not getting the most out of it. With a fire/traps character, you shouldn't have problems with either AVs or larger spawns because you've got a good combination of single target and AoE powers. Taking the presence pool for AV shenanigans would probably be a good idea, though, as you'll be able to effectively keep 'em away from the traps that you need to have out.
-
Which server are you playing on? Always helps to find a steady group to play with -- definitely more enjoyable that way.
-
I'd recommend a traps/dark defender for soloing large groups, actually. Lead with seekers, drop your poison gas trap while they're distracted, laugh hysterically as they vomit (they do! They actually do!) and let loose your tenebrous tentacles -- they should all be relatively close together after trying to down those pesky drones, so you'll snare most of 'em. Drop your mortar next, throw your caltrops on 'em, and then start hitting them with alternating night fall and more tentacles, adding gloom and dark blast for bosses and lieutenants. It's a wee bit slower than normal until you IO yourself out, but it's actually quite enjoyable being able to solo 0/8 spawns at level 24. Duo with a spines/fire scrapper for added speed.

You can improve your build in a number of ways:
1. Dump x-ray beam, pick up neutron bomb. Being able to damage and debuff an entire group with a tiny nuclear blast is far superior than attempting to stare through someone's clothing.
2. Find a slotting guide. Like Adeon said, you've either heavily overslotted or underslotted most of your powers, and not in ways that benefit anyone. It almost looks like you're trying to get a little bit of everything in with your slotting, which means you don't really realize the potential of any power. I'm going to assume that you're fairly new because of both your registration date and your overslotting, which means you probably haven't learned about what's known as "ED" -- enhancement diversification -- which informs how we slot our powers. Go here to read about it:
http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Enhanc...iversification
The tl;dr version of the above link: throwing more than three of the same enhancement in a given power is worthless because of diminishing returns. You're going to want/need to learn how to IO yourself out, and it's not typically too hard to do.
For most offensive powers, you can follow the following slotting formula:
1 acc
3 dmg
1 end redux
For most, this is sufficient. With some powers, as you've correctly deduced by throwing in defense debuffs, there's extras that you can throw in. Keep in mind that you can only have six slots in each power, though, so you're not going to be able to fit everything in. For some powers (irradiate), the above formula isn't really optimal. You'll have to tweak it.
3. Your heals -- they need to be slotted better. 1 end redux, 1 recharge, 3 heals. BAM! Done. Don't throw them on auto unless you're in a zone event like a Rikti invasion.
4. You have an odd hankering to get some range in each of your abilities, which strikes me as, well...odd. For the most part, it's a wasted slot that could be better utilized.
5. Fortitude. Treat it with love and care and throw two or three recharge in there to make sure it's up. Make sure it's up, make sure you're throwing it on players as soon as it is, and you're good.
Other than that, I agree with what Adeon has said. Take a look at what he posts, and go from there. -
What about sonic blast? It is repeatedly touted as being a single target monster and an AV killer when paired with radiation emission or traps. The -resistance secondary effect of sonic also benefits teammates, as well, making it potentially even more attractive to him.
