Taking Defending more serious like

Hey.

I recently got involved in a taskforce and face planted entirely too much. I haven't paid much attention to things like enhancements and IOs and SOs and such as. But I want to do better to support the teams I'm on. I can't do that if I'm constantly making trips to the hosp.

What advice can ya'll give me to make Technically Eva here more epic?

Here's my mids - hopefully I'm posting this correctly.

I should say that I do like keeping things like stealth/inviso and speed since I find myself on a lot of speedy taskforce missions. But I can live without those if it makes me better at defending.

You have a very unique build there. Just glancing over it I would say you're heavily underslotted for well just about anything you might actually want. Except for Health and Stamina where you are heavily overslotted.

You actual power selection isn't to bad. You're a little heavier on the travel pools than I like. Taking both Speed and Leaping means you're having to skip other, more useful powers (such as a couple more attacks and maybe leadership toggles. I also wouldn't bother taking both Invisibility and Stealth (since Super Speed + Stealth is sufficient for most situations.

Let me see what I can do.

EDIT: OK, here's a quick build I made up. Powerwise the only change is that I dropped invisibility for Neutron Bomb and reordered a few power, other than that the main change is to the slotting. Your attacks should be a lot more powerful and I've put more recharge into your Empathy buffs so you can have them up more often. I'm also assuming you aren't going to try and run all 5 toggles at one, while it is possible you'll probably run dry pretty quick. I recommend only running Combat Jumping, Charged Armor and Acrobatics in combat and turning Super Jump, Super Speed and Stealth on and off as necessary. There's probably room for improvement, this is something I slapped together in a few minutes .

Also be careful using Irradiate, as an Empath you don't have a lot of personal protection so going in close for a PBAoE attack can be risky.

Lots to change, but you came to the right place for tips.

Some basics (for an SO build. IOs take things to the next level).

1. Lose all the range slotting.
2. Six slot fortitude 3 rech, 3 def., Six slot reg aura, 3 rech, 3 heal
3. Rez needs only the base slot with one recharge.
4. Stamina and health are way overslotted. cut to 3 slot stam and 1 slot health.
5. Basic heal slotting should be 3 heal, two rech, 1 end.
6. 1 slot Combat jumping, Acro, clear mind, stealth, invis. Swift and Super Jump
7. Recovery Aura needs only 3 recharges.
8. six slot Adrenalin boost 3 rech, 2 heal, 1 End mod IO.
9. All attacks should be six-slotted (basic slotting is acc, end, rech, damx3).

Others can give a more detailed critique, but implementing the above and playing with a buff-centric focus (cast Fortitude immediately on recharge and keep it on as many teammates as possible, and keep reg aura up as often as possible) will improve you and your teams performance considerably.

Good luck!

In case you missed it, I edited a sample build into my first post.

Auroxis' build is a good example of a high end IO build.

Just glancing at Chazz's post, that looks real sounds as baseline slotting of empath powers.

I would also move the auras up in your build, if is a respec build too. An option is also, stealth and SS, and just put a kb protection Io in stealth or Fort. CJ gives you immob protection, yes acro is hold protection. I can live without hold protection, but i like immob protection. I think i am gonna look at using Assault (for added damage boost when solo, and defender inherent) and then maybe Tactics (decreased mezzing for you and your team, so i don't have to clear mind so much on team) with mine once i respec him for 19.

Besides keeping Fort up and running, use Adrenalin boost too, i chose the blasters and squishies more then the tanks and scrappers. Melee toons have heals and stuff, don't neglect them, but AB on blasters or trollers cuts down on healing them all the time.

Another thing about AB, i hear, but never checked. If you AB another empath on your team, then the two of you can basically "perma Recovery Aura/regen aura" for the team by alternating using them. The key is AB boost recharge of your powers, so you have to keep the other empath ABed. And the other empath has to keep you ABed. Then you can just fight, and not really heal.

Best tactic for perma recovery/regen auras, is tight grouping, and not screaming "gather for...", the rule is tight compact group, then you can both just fire off the auras hitting everyone at once, and keep fighting.

You can improve your build in a number of ways:

1. Dump x-ray beam, pick up neutron bomb. Being able to damage and debuff an entire group with a tiny nuclear blast is far superior than attempting to stare through someone's clothing.

2. Find a slotting guide. Like Adeon said, you've either heavily overslotted or underslotted most of your powers, and not in ways that benefit anyone. It almost looks like you're trying to get a little bit of everything in with your slotting, which means you don't really realize the potential of any power. I'm going to assume that you're fairly new because of both your registration date and your overslotting, which means you probably haven't learned about what's known as "ED" -- enhancement diversification -- which informs how we slot our powers. Go here to read about it:

http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Enhanc...iversification

The tl;dr version of the above link: throwing more than three of the same enhancement in a given power is worthless because of diminishing returns. You're going to want/need to learn how to IO yourself out, and it's not typically too hard to do.

For most offensive powers, you can follow the following slotting formula:

1 acc
3 dmg
1 end redux

For most, this is sufficient. With some powers, as you've correctly deduced by throwing in defense debuffs, there's extras that you can throw in. Keep in mind that you can only have six slots in each power, though, so you're not going to be able to fit everything in. For some powers (irradiate), the above formula isn't really optimal. You'll have to tweak it.

3. Your heals -- they need to be slotted better. 1 end redux, 1 recharge, 3 heals. BAM! Done. Don't throw them on auto unless you're in a zone event like a Rikti invasion.

4. You have an odd hankering to get some range in each of your abilities, which strikes me as, well...odd. For the most part, it's a wasted slot that could be better utilized.

5. Fortitude. Treat it with love and care and throw two or three recharge in there to make sure it's up. Make sure it's up, make sure you're throwing it on players as soon as it is, and you're good.

Other than that, I agree with what Adeon has said. Take a look at what he posts, and go from there.

Talen_Lee: Taking absorb pain is like branding 'H' on your forehead. Which stands for 'Failure'

Scarf_Girl: ever since I six slotted my Rp with cyber/emo Hami-O enhancements they haven't been able to touch me

I'll try out that AB thing the next time i'm on a team w another emp. that last part tho - that's the hardest trying to get members to stay together. I say all the time that I can't heal everyone when you keep running around. But i really love being support - how else did I get to lvl 49 with such a sad build! lolz

Be sure to let the other Emp in on the plan, even then some folks don't realize that AB offers 100% recharge. It's nice when you get someone to cooperate though.

As for worrying about teammates spreading out, I don't. Take Leadership, get Vengeance, then wait for the sucker to die. Everybody gets a nice buff and you help them pick their face up off the floor... and maybe, just maybe, they learn where their limits lie.

This is why I would throw fortitude on the ones that run around. You don't need to heal everyone when they can't get hurt anyway.

If you want to get people to stay together, try saying this at the beginning of a team: "If you want the recovery auras, I drop them on <character who is leading the charge> when they're recharged whether you're there or not." People like their RAs, so they'll stick near your tank or whoever it is that's sticking his face in the way of bullets. If they don't, then odds are you don't need to be taking care of them anyway. A spare fortitude probably wouldn't go amiss, though.
