Quote:It's this reason that all fire departments in the US use halon systems to fight fires instead of water. :P*shrugs* Ice powers and dedicated fire extinguishers WOULD probably be better for putting out fires than simple water. Not so much a big spike of ice, but fires are extinguished by lowering the temperature, displacing oxygen or both. Water is simply not as good as extreme cold for the first, and not as good as something like halon at the second.

It will attempt to avoid them. Since computers can react to a situation such as this 1000's of times faster than a human can, it will likely succeed in many cases where a human would not. Additionally, it will near-instantly consider all the other traffic around it and probably 100's of other factors a human in the same situation would likely miss.

Quote:Sure are. And you may have noticed that aside from the Assault set, they have a Control set. That's kind of different from a buff/debuff set.Aren't there a lot of dominators that already focus on the melee part of their Assault powers though?
But, for a Melee/Buff AT to actually work, the buff/debuff set would have to compensate for the lack of any sort of armor/defense set since this AT would be in melee range all the time. Some of the buff/debuff sets we have now would really struggle doing that sort of thing - Kinetics, TA, Cold, Thermal. All of these have really good buffs or debuffs but not of the sort that would likely prevent you from face planting while in melee. Maybe you just don't include these sets in the Melee/Buff AT? But I bet people would be unhappy about that. -
At least it's possible someone not already playing the game might see this info on Facebook and actually decide to give the game a try. If they only post info like this on the forum, then that guarantees that only existing players will see it (though, it should have been cross-posted to both sources.) I'm all for any advertising that actually might draw in more players, though, especially since there obviously isn't a budget to do any other forms of advertising.

Quote:Well, it would likely be similar to bungee jumping or an amusement park ride. You may be able to sue the company if there is some sort of equipment failure that results in injury, but most likely you'd settle out of court for some small amount. And you know you are potentially risking injury just by using the product. Not to mention, the service contract is likely to have wording that would resolve any dispute of the contract or liability claim in arbitration, anyway. But it would have to be something that happens so rarely that it wouldn't be a major issue.Hmm, that's a good idea. Never thought of it. I could see that as more likely to work. Hope they have plenty good lawyers though. The notion that the company holds no liability is hard to come by it the U.S. legal system.
The point being that it's not likely to come to market unless it's reliable enough that a company could reasonably rely on the technology being safe enough that any incidents with it would be rare. Rare enough that any potential lawsuit wouldn't bankrupt the company.
Of course, if that company is Google...well, there's certainly a decent level of acceptable risk that still wouldn't bankrupt the company. -
Actually, due to liability issues, it's much more likely that in the future when there are fleets of automated vehicles, you're not likely to actually 'own' one. Instead, you'll pay some sort of subscription fee or something similar to a lease. But, if you don't own the vehicle, then you won't have to maintain insurance on the vehicle for liability claims. And as part of the service contract, you'll not hold the company liable in the event of a malfunction, I'm quite certain.
Still, just comparing the frequency of accidents in the airline industry to the frequency of accidents for human drivers (even after accounting for the discrepancy between the number of commercial airliners and automobiles) its far, far safer to have a computer driving your vehicle than you.
And, I, for one, welcome our new automated vehicle overlords. :P -
It's designed to avoid obstacles (like people or other cars in the road) so it should stop or avoid a deer in the road or an accident, as well.
Admittedly, it's taken some time to get to that point, and you can find some funny videos of it doing some really weird things at times in test scenarios. I recall watching one video of it accelerating around a sudden obstacle instead of slowing down. However, it did avoid the obstacle.
And honestly, once we get to a point where the technology is integrated into all vehicles, we'll have exactly what the airline industry has right now - much safer travel. Vehicles that drive themselves will be far safer than vehicles driven by humans. -
Hmm, I don't have it installed in Program Files and it doesn't patch if it's on his account. Maybe I have more restrictions in place on his account than I realized.
Anyway, if it patches without admin rights, then you won't have any issues, I suppose, other than the aforementioned horrible load times. -
Having installed the game on my child's non-admin account, I can verify that without admin rights, the game will not be patched, if needed. Now, if you are patching on another machine periodically, the fact that it skips this on the school machine probably doesn't matter. But if you are not otherwise patching, then the client may become unstable or unplayable at all after a patch.

Quote:I totally agree. IMO, shaky-cam is just a cop out - a director that doesn't know how to film a fight/action sequence. I've never seen any film where it ever added anything of value.I'm just glad they didn't use any shaky-cam in the action sequences. I don't mind slow/fast/slow action sequences that much (though they do feel like padding in some cases), but shaky-cam fights irritate the hell out of me. If I'm going to pay twelve bucks for a movie, I want to be able to see what's happening in the damn movie.

Wow, 20 posts into a thread about dark armor and Dechs hasn't posted. Is he on vacation?

Judging by the number of base salvage bids on items that have 0 for sale and no history, I'd say a good deal of inf could be stashed away in those. Not much of a threat of those accidentally being filled at this point, either.

I'm not sure the phasing tech could do this. Everything I've seen regarding phasing has been binary. Either you see the Hellions and their fires rampaging or you see the cops. Nothing in that suggests to me that the tech is capable of having mobs scale in any way to individual players. In fact, I'd imagine something like this would likely never happen, as it would require every mob spawn in open zones to actually spawn from -1/x0 to +4/x8 for every level of character in the game or, in other words, spawn over 2000 mobs for every spawn point, each keyed to a different phase and difficulty.
Much more likely, would be to use the level-less tech that is used for zone events for every mob spawn. It still wouldn't reflect difficulty, but at least then no mobs would ever con grey. -
Quote:Hmm, it's been a bug for a while, then, cause I seem to recall having the DVD Edition (which is Cape of the Four Winds) listed in the creator, but locked, for me for a while. And I just checked, it is locked for me, as I would expect, since I have not applied an original Collector's Edition code to may account (yet).Cape of the Four Winds.
And considering things said at the Pummit this past weekend, I think seeing this show up may be a glitch unless they are showing all costume pieces available even if they require an unlock of some kind. -
I could have sworn that was the default behavior since Freedom launched. All of the costume pieces that are potentially available are in the costume creator just locked if you either can't use it due to VIP/Collector's Edition items you don't have access to or because they are pieces you haven't purchased yet.
I could be mistaken though, I can't check using the CoV cape, as I have that already. Was there a costume piece associated with the original Collector's Edition that shouldn't be available to someone that hasn't applied that code? I think everything that was part of Going Rogue is available to VIPs (at various reward levels) at this point, right? -
Quote:If you're alluding to GW2, as it sounds like you may be, then perhaps it does, I'm not sure. Either I'm too stuck in my ways regarding MMO play and so the play style didn't appeal to me or it really doesn't and that's why I felt the play style was so jarring. It was very.... different. Not necessarily in a bad way, but I can't say it was good either. There is a new MMO out there that says it aspires to something that sounds like this... but I wasn't in beta so I cannot say how it actually plays.
But since it only requires the one payment (at least until some expansions come out) for as long as you want to play, it's not a horrible investment for entertainment/$. It's definitely not going to pull me away from this game, though. -
I agree that it probably isn't account wide (and really should be) but how exactly would you check? If you log in on a character that shouldn't have the badge, it is - presumably - awarded then. And on each character I've logged in so far, I've not seen the badge earned message pop up for this badge and I don't see it in my log, either. But it is in my list of recently earned badges.
Maybe it really is account wide? -
Hero system. It's probably the one you were thinking of when you said over complicated, but it will absolutely allow you to mimic every power in the game, and then some.

Hand Clap was the reason for my very first respec on my Inv/SS tank way back when the only way to get a respec was from the trials. I didn't realize it didn't do damage, and once I also realized it knocked enemies away from me, I definitely didn't want it. Invuln and knockback really don't mix very well. Though, conceptually, it made perfect sense for my SS tank to have it.
I wish we had Statesman's version of it (or maybe a bit of a toned-down version of his Hand Clap,) though I would still rather it only do knockdown instead of knockback. -
Honestly, I doubt you'd even need to email the rewards back. They would just transfer those from the copy to the original once the trial is done or even as the trial progresses. If you are playing a copy of your original character, there's no reason not to simply add rewards as they are earned on both versions so that when the copy is deleted the original already has all the rewards the copy earned.
-
I would imagine it's quite a bit simpler to temporarily transfer your character to an instance server (such as for an iTrial or DFB) while on that particular team or league, than it would be to temporarily transfer your character to another server entirely. After all, this is already being done for the instance, it's simply only starting the transfer, at this point, from a single server. Of course, who knows, maybe the devs intend for exactly what you have envisioned in your version of 'cross-server' teaming?
-
You can add items to your shopping cart that you already own, but it's supposed to prevent you from actually purchasing them if you try to buy them.
At least, that's how things work on beta when I've attempted to buy something that I didn't realize I've already unlocked on beta.
It's not really an ideal system. It shouldn't let you add items you already own to your cart at all. -
I just wish I could catch one. I seem to only play between the 4 hour reset periods, apparently.
-
And thus, you've determined, as many of us have, the reason why this game has always been a niche game and not more mainstream.
Other than some videos I've seen posted on the website in the past, I don't recall any advertisements for this game. I'm sure there have been, but for some reason, there's never been much of an ad budget, it seems. -
If this is true:
Quote:And the foundation for "cross-server" stuff has been laid:All the servers are now virtualised (which was how they were able to add Exalted and combine the european servers into the list) so you could be queued with anyone from any 'server'.
Quote:4) Foundation for future development effort: if you wanted (for example) to offer "cross server teaming" or "cross server PvP" there are several preparations that would be needed to lay the groundwork. MMO's have servers/shards/instances for various reasons-- often for optimizing performance and/or avoiding technical limits. When you start looking at reaching across those servers/shards/instances in different ways, you run the risk of undoing some of that optimization. Not saying that's happening here, (but I hope it is).
