I hate to say this...but, I think it's really over for our beloved game.

And chances are that there are also similar things for Nvidia and ATI to attend as well.
Speaking of which, is it Nvidia's fault for our PhysX bugs?

I don't know the US numbers, but I know my previous employer needed 1 million euros to run a 22 person company in 2005. That makes it probably a little over 1.5 million dollar or about $70k per person, maybe $85k in 2012?

What the employees would see of that on their pay check is about half of that, somewhere in the $35-45k ballpark.

Those are Dutch numbers for a company in a rural area. I would not be surprised if the numbers in Silicon Valley are significantly higher.

I think that employing 80 people would run somewhere in the 8-12 million dollar range, if only half of those people were working on City of Heroes, then the game was making a profit, but Paragon Studios was only barely breaking even.

Given the roughly 2.5 million dollar revenue per quarter from the official NCsoft SEC filings, the number of $800k/month profit can just not be true, it is clear the revenue per month was around that number. This is the only number that is publicly out there as far as I know and the only thing verified by accountants. Any discussion about the profitability of CoH has to start from this number. Only if the entire PS staff was working for free could you get the number of $800k/month profit. The much more likely explanation is that someone mixed up revenue and income.

Here's a question for the number crunchers in this thread: It's been stated repeatedly that Paragon Studios had 80 people working for them. What's not clear to me is; were these 80 people all working on City of Heroes, or did that number include the folks that were working on the other projects?

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

Not really relevant for the discussion, but I used to work in a large software company, and back then the rule of thumb was that each employee (including salary, pension, heat, electricity, building rental, etc.) cost around 170 usd an hour. That was the 'break even' number for the projects we worked on.

But that's not in California, so you can't really compare it to the Paragon situation.

(Also, we had to buy our own AD&D books )

Yeah, figured that would be the case, which ever the answer may have been.

My best RL friend plays this game, and has been farming like that for ... ever. These days he uses, I kid you not, 12 accounts to do it with. (Well, he did, he stopped after the announcement.) So yeah, I know how that works, and have all along. Guess what? That ability of players like him to farm them has always been baked into the market prices. Do you know when the prices on the high-end ones crashed, and finally dipped under the 1-2B mark? When converters came out, and allowed the massive stockpiles of low-value PvPOs those farmers all had created to be converted into the valuable ones.
Then why the F**K did you make stuff up. Hero Merits weren't the only way to get PvP IOs and the bulk of what you got farming were trash.

  1. Where do PVP IOs appear in that sentence?
  2. If you add PVP IOs to that sentence it references two ways to get them:
    1. Hero/Villain Merits
    2. Drops

FWIW (and I am assuming that isn't much), I have three forum users on ignore. One was put there very recently (post-announcement trolling), another has been there a few months to maybe a year.

Another_Fan was the first user I ignored, and has been the list for a few years following any number of posts tilting at blasters, the market, etc.

Jackasses may look different to different people.

Suggestions:
Super Packs Done Right
Influence Sink: IO Level Mod/Recrafting
Random Merit Rolls: Scale cost by Toon Level

Yeah, tell it to someone a little more gullible and didn't see you post deceptive pictures of what pricing was like.

Are you trying to convince yourself ? Because you sure aren't convincing me.

Why would you put anyone on ignore unless they were spamming ?

Ironically, what you are doing here is exactly the kind of response behavior that gets people into fights with Another_Fan. You moved the goal posts completely here. You accused me of "making **** up", and when I pointed you at what I said and showed that was a load of hooey, you deflect and make a different claim all together.

Look, anyone who knows me knows I'll gladly argue this ancient history with you till the sun goes out. I mean it, I'm happy to keep going, because I think you're living in a wrong tree in the valley of wrong, and someone is wrong on the internet. If you really want to keep responding to it here, I'll keep responding back. But I know that it's completely off the original topic of this thread, continuing to derail the living hell out of it, and believe it or not, I'd rather do it somewhere else.

I'm not completely sure why you've decided to make me a target of your flailing, but I can guess. I think you don't like the way I responded to you earlier, calling into question the whole "failure" thing, and a couple of times now digging you for your claims of "blowing our mind".

Do I need to point out that leading in with that how your insights will "blow our minds" is exceptionally condescending? That suggesting that you know stuff that everyone else is apparently too stupid or emotional to have figured out isn't going to endear you to anyone, especially when you end up posting nothing new? And you have the temerity to get on a soap box about how you've avoided the forums because of nasty posters? You need to invest in a mirror, dude.

HAHAHAHA this post is so full of win. I hope those other two tools don't stop derailing this thread; I'm quite enjoying watching them make bigger fools of themselves every time they post.

Being a jackass comes into play based on what you argue, how you go about it, and sometimes when. I don't run around the forums picking fights: I only respond when I think someone is saying something that's both (factually) wrong and (IMO) important to correct.

Sometimes I think it's important to correct things because it will help the person making the incorrect statement. I usually make special efforts to be polite when offering corrections in this case, though on the rare occasion I am attacked in response despite that politeness, I may not always be polite any further.

Sometimes, I think it's important to respond when I think the thing that's wrong is part of a larger misconception that is harmful for people to have. That old thread is an example of this - I feel that a large number of players had terrible misconceptions about the market, and that those misconceptions were bad for the game. They often became rallying cries for something like virtual class warfare, which is a terrible thing if they are actually wrong. Unfortunately, debates about them often became very heated because they convolved facts with opinions - people had very strong, almost religious convictions about the rights and wrongs of the in-game market, and that almost always clouded rational debate. I won't claim I was immune to this, but I was at least aware of it and tried to bear it in mind.

You seem to feel that being confrontational at all is the hallmark of a jackass. That's your prerogative, but it's not a view I will ever share.
