Any Mac refugees?

Anyone else play on mac? Any other mac users looking for another MMO but finding your options limited and pretty lackluster?

Here's a piece of news that might interest you then:

Guild Wars 2 is now available for Mac

I know some people have strong feelings about NCsoft but I don't blame ArenaNet for this mess and I know its really hard to find something worth playing on the mac. Just thought I would share.

Please save your NCsoft hate for another thread, thanks.

I kid, I kid. I certainly don't blame Anet for this, but I will say that I was...disappointed with Guild Wars 2. Definitely not as special or as anti-grind as was promised. Still, GW2 is a fun game, and I suppose that's what matters.

Is Transgaming hate acceptable? GW2 for Mac is using their wonderful wrapper.

Considering what CoH did to my Macs when running through Cider the only thing I can think of something like GW2 doing would be akin to a nuclear meltdown.

Best advice I can think of is ... ditch the Mac and get a real PC.

At this moment in time - yes it is.

Unfortunately, Guild Wars 2 is now "available" for a Mac that's at least twice as powerful as the one I actually own, and I don't have money to go out and buy a replacement (as much as I've drooled over the top-of-the-line models in the Apple store)

So, no. I still won't be playing GW2. If they drop the system requirements to be closer to CoH's requirements, then maybe I'll consider it.

Eh, "Any Mac refugees?" is a misleading subject line if all this thread intends to do is promote another NC Soft title that isn't a native app (such as those for WoW and Eve). Mac users willing to run Windows on Boot Camp have plenty of options otherwise.

I do play on a mac and find the MMO choices wanting....that being said I wont give NCSoft another cent. Yes I am angry at the company but its for a very different reason. This game was cancelled with no warning what so ever. Can you guarantee that if I get invested in GW2 that down the road NcSoft wont do the same thing?

I'm not an NCsoft fan right at this moment, but they did give us 3 months notice that game was closing?

Every MMO will shut down at some point. It's unavoidable.

Sure, if one takes the longterm view, e.g. the heat-death of the universe.

Otherwise, Meridian 59 (1996), Ultima Online (1997), and EverQuest* (1999) are just the most notable among long-running MMORPGs. It's a shame that NCSoft decided City of Heroes couldn't stay in their company.

* Which has a Mac client, albeit only for a frozen-in-time version of the game.

I was going to try GW2's mac client until I saw Transgaming.

Posted in their forums warning them of the problems the current Cider wrapper has and was shot down by 50 people calling me some pretty nasty names.

Two hours later, over sixty threads detailing the exact issues I listed popped up. I hope they choke on my "I told you so."

I went over there to check it out. Wow. They learned nothing from their "attempt" with CoH.

Draining power from the battery while plugged in included. Power (Watts) Leak thread.

For some reason, I have a strong suspicious that whatever deal NCSoft had with Transgaming was transferred over to ArenaNet & GW2 when they axed CoH. I have absolutely zero evidence, but it's just a gut feeling

I'd be curious to see a comparison of the cider-wrapped version of GW2 pitted against a Wine/CX version (also on OSX) version of GW2. Any performance difference? Battery? Stability? Hell, I just checked out CodeWeaver's site (developers of CrossOver, and major Wine contributors), and they have an entire sub-section of their forum setup dedicated to GW2, and the top sticky says that they (CX) are working on improving the stability.

ArenaNet might be better off making a deal with CodeWeavers and have them handle the "porting". They can't do a worse job than Transgaming, from the sound of things.

No, they really didn't and they never, ever will. Transgaming was dead and utterly silent for the first two years of the CoH Mac client and only spoke up when Paragon put pressure on them to fix the Mac Paragon Store issue so Mac users could play on launch of the store. Then, they went utterly silent again.

When I asked Zwill to consult them about the constant memory leaks, assertion failures and debug failures and the constant crashing when using the in-game store for more than three minutes. He replied that they had no intention of fixing those issues "in the forseeable future."

Transgaming is a terrible company, and I wish NC would cut them loose and let them wither away in the hellhole that is GameTree, where they belong. They lack the dedication to work with big name games like GW2. If that wasn't true they'd be more active in fixing their buggy, crashy P-O-S Cider wrapper with the newer Wine builds that have been released several times in the last year, rather than using an outdated build from 2009 that has had "minor tweaks" made to use web API calls.

It's one of the things I really liked about CoH: I could play it on my Macbook while travelling.

And it would run fine on 1680x1050 on maxxed out Ultra.

Oh and the store - it was buggy on Windows as well.

I currently only play games that work on the Mac, even if I do have a Windows PC at home for gaming as well.

What model did you have that could manage that? Primarily, what GPU?

You don't understand. It's not that they're closing the game.

It would have just been sad if NC Soft had given the devs time to finish I24, and then one more issue to bring the game to a graceful close. They didn't.

Instead, they fired the dev team (who had no idea what was coming) and said "Everybody out of the pool" to the players, leaving the most-anticipated update in the game's history hanging in limbo the players homeless, and the devs jobless. (After a week of the devs excitedly showing off updates and working on powersets that would have kept the game going for years to come)

That's not how you close a game with an 8-year history. That's not how you treat one of the best development teams in the business. That's not how you treat a group of players that consider the game home and the community to be an extended family.

That doesn't make people sad, that makes them angry.

My understanding is it is in its beta stage with players who have bought the game able to play on live servers. After testing a mac edition will be released with I assume most of the wrinkles ironed out.

Again this is only a informational post. I'm not telling you to buy the game, my opinion of it or NCsoft. Just letting mac players know who don't feel like paying 90 dollars or more for a windows license on top of the cost of another game.

Considering the poor support from Transgaming for CoH, from that alone I couldn't recommend GW2 for the Mac unless it was as an absolute last resort.

Buying a copy of Windows for Bootcamp might be cheaper than the thermal stress of a sloppy Cider wrapper. (I actually had the power drain happen on my old MBP while AFK in Atlas, noticed my magsafe light was orange and my battery was at 75%. So I'm not saying Transgaming is a kiss of death but it is a kiss of we-don't-care-much-for-this-game.)

Never going to happen. Guild Wars 2 by itself is getting its own wrinkles ironed out by ANet. The mac port will rely solely on Transgaming for its wrinkles, and considering how bloody ****ing awful the support for the CoH mac port was (see: none whatsoever) I wouldn't get any hopes up for the GW2 mac client beta surviving past Christmas.

I think that's a bit more paranoid. I think it's more likely that someone hit a checklist item "Mac support for GW2 because WoW runs on Macs" and some management guy said "Hey, theres these guys who did the port for that other game, call them".

In many ways, Transgaming is the perfect solution. Little work needed from the developer, it's all on them. If it worked, it would be even more perfect!

Admittedly it's not a suspicious I take too seriously.

From the sound of it, Transgaming doesn't do a particularly large amount of 'support', they seem better suited to games where development is already completely done, so they just need to get it to work once and it's done forever. Transgaming also isn't the only game in town, CodeWeaver's also does porting (and they're not hated with a burning passion). Transgaming a while ago abandoned all their Cedega customers, while CodeWeavers continues supporting CrossOver, in addition to continuing to offer their porting services.
