I believe those clauses are not enforceable or even legal in California.

I doubt there's a no compete clause. Zwill said on his last video that NCSoft threw the employees a job fair, so I'm thinking even if there was one, they're not enforcing it.
This might be a bit naive, but I would assume that such clauses apply if you leave the company, but not if the company leaves you?

Can they hold you to a non-compete clause, if they lay you off?
If you quit, I can see it. If they lay you off though, I don't think they can hold you to that, as it leaves you without job options.

Secondly, with MMO design being a relatively narrow field, that makes it even more unlikely.
